Title: New Forums
Post by: guyforget on August 23, 2005, 02:52:48 AM
So I broke down finally.  My beloved phpbb2 creation was just too out of date.  Only it was too modified to upgrade to newly released versions without many tedious hours of editing files by hand.  It was a bitch, to say the least.  And the longer I let it go the more succeptable to vandals we became.  So tonight I switched us over to some new forums software.  This software allows all of the functions that I had allowed via hacking up our installation of phpbb2 out of the box, thus making it easier to keep updated and just as functional.

It will take some getting used to, I know.  There will be bugs; I'm sure, though I dont think Ive found anything yet.

Maybe the last 2 or 3 posts on the old board didnt make the database switch.  If youre new thread was deleted I apologize.  I know that the vacuum solo thread was lost.  Again; All Apologies.

I think that it even matches up with the banner that jedifunk created for us when we got on our feet.  Comments?

There are a few added profile fields for users.  Use your profile button to check it out and customize whats available.

Please inform me of bugs.  If you are unable to post to the board for whatever reason you can use the email address in my sig.

i think the new design is sick!
it will take a little time to get used to,
but will be well worth it.
thanks for the hard work!

hey guy,

the new forum design is great!  and added functionality never hurts (well, almost never)...

one question - i see on the index page the rss feed from etree is gone. just wondering if that will be returning in the future or not? (again, not a biggie, just curious).

thanks again to all mods/admins for the great work :)

Well, I hope I don't lose the post (count) for the reply I made to the vacuum solo thread.  That's what I'm about.  Post-count.  If I don't have that, then what do I have?

I love the new setup. :-D :-D

I am going to
try out these
new features

the new design is

What the hell is teletype?

1st, 2nd, 3rd

what other fonts are there?

Can someone show me how the table works really quick?
How about the code?

This is a great forum product (Simple Machines) and Props on getting as much to come over a well as you did.
Man, was a Sprised when I saw it this a.m.

as for tickets. It's a cool feature but easily abused.

I had decided against the ticket/karma setup just because its easily abused and we dont really have any problems with spammers, flamers, and trolls.  [Yet...]

This is something that I want too, but I may have to make the changes to the news module myself, as I dont think that it has RSS reader capability out of the box.  While I have used this software as a community member I have never had admin or mod capabilities, so Im learning alot about this software just like many of y'all are.  Whether or not its possible; I dunno, but I will definitely be looking into it.

Wondering....

is there any way to tell which posts are the newest in a particular thread??  in the old forum, the top bar of a new post would be darker.  anything like that now?

if i have questions about the new setup, should i post in the tech support forum...
i'm a little confused about a lot of the new features and seemingly lost old features:

such as the Private messaging system...is it just a in/ out box now?--w/ no save box?
i dunno, gonna take some getting used to, but i'm sure its for the best. :-)

PS: ROWJIM**--if your'e reading this, did you get my message i sent today?...i didnt see it in the outbox after i sent it..

slim - in your profile, under personal message options, you can set it to save msgs in the outbox by default... (if that's what you were talking about?)

actually the scrolling aspect of the avatars bugs the F outta me...i just want to have a set size and look at an entire pic...small , big whatever restrictions,, just find the scrolling thing annoying--as i already said once.

I am guessing there's a way to "auto-scale" a user image to fit to a certain width and just let the height go...  I think my bro's forums have it (a different type of forums, but they all gotta be somewhat similar)

Jephrey

it'd be easier if an "auto-scale" exists..

if all else fails, you can resize it yourself, check this out...

Image Resizer

This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click.

i've used this tool for a while and it works like a charm!!!

I just did mine in photo editor (crop, then resize.  looks like the max width without scrolling is 150 pixels)  I wonder if that could be noted on that page for reference.  I just thought that something bulit-in would be sweeter.

the power resizer installs itself, but it includes itself in your right-click options menu, so whenever you feel like resizing an image you right click it and set your output dimensions, and its done, i guess i just prefer using it because it eliminates the need to open a program everytime.

Edit: less one idiotic comment!!!
Title: Re: New Forums
Post by: rowjimmy on August 24, 2005, 12:19:09 PM
I could be wrong but, doesn't it really depend on the viewer's screen/window resolution/size? crnl4bn's current avatar scrolls if i go full screen in my primary monitor but, if i expand the window across both of my monitors, it shows the entire avatar.
Title: Re: New Forums
Post by: guyforget on August 24, 2005, 12:21:43 PM
The largest allowed avatar at this moment is 400 x 400 pixels.  I figure it all depends on your screen resolution as to how large an avatar one can view without the scroll bars.  Personally, as long as the scroll bars are there and its not stretching my screen to crazy proportions I dont care how large an avatar is.

And I like being able to show off art that I collect.   :-D :-o

Edit: I should have expected rowjimmy to be a step ahead of me; again.   :-D
Title: Re: New Forums
Post by: crnl4bn on August 24, 2005, 12:51:53 PM
i was saying that 245pxls is the maximum width (with my monitor's screen resolution set 1600x1200) before the scrolling effect happens!!!

150pixels is a little over 61% of 245pixels... I was thinking that a 39% reduction of my screen resolution would be a lot smaller, maybe 1024x768... I don't know, I just thought that sounded a little lowrez...

I don't know, I guess I just decided to take the liberty of assuming that jephrey had a higher screen rez set...

Never-the-less, thanks for the correction.

My res is set at 1280x1024.  I might try out 1600x1200 just because I dont think that I ever have...  though Ill have to track down some new backgrounds.

(http://week4paug.net/users/guyforget/img/screenshots/082405.png) (http://week4paug.net/users/guyforget/img/screenshots/082405.png)

The most annoying thing about having a large avatar is seeing it at the top of the page all of the time.  I havent found a way to disable that and I dont think its possible without removing that part of the code.  Which is doable, but doing that would negate the reason for switching - which was that Id hacked up the old forums with modifications and such to the point that they were impossible to keep updated security-wise.

A few things on the positive side, though...  Watch the bottom of the page where it says "Page created in...".  It very rarely goes to .1 seconds or above.  Much quicker than the old forums, which is at least partially due to the mods to the code, and which could have been improved with upgrades most likely.  Also theres this entertaining guy with the afro:

Hey, thats neat!  But Id still like to be able to keep all of that information, just lose the image.  Thatd be ideal to me.  I can add a little text blurb on the right side of the "week4paug.net | Spurious Generalities | etc, etc line that restates the " 10819 Posts in 1505 Topics by 761 Members
Latest Member: guthrie101 " In the "Key Stats" box, but I figure most people keep that clicked so that they can see the User Info and such...  So its kinda redundant.

Guy-
Redundancy, while sometimes repetitive and superflous, is often useful and handy. And though, once in a while it's occasionally tedious; periodically, it's nice to have in place.

All righty then.  Check it - http://week4paug.net/index.php

See 'em?  Theyre cool there?  Not annoying and redundant?  Id say that they work well there when a user wants to hide all of the other info up top.  BUT  - when you use those arrows to hide the info you have to redo it every time you reload a page.  It should save that setting for users...  wonder if thats something that I can enable somewhere - I dont recall seeing anything of the sort, and Ive been through it many many times in the past days.  Hrm...  :?

Yeah, no chicks...  no surprise in that, though.

I find this board to be alot easier to follow.  The three necessary links:

Show unread posts since last visit. (http://week4paug.net/index.php?action=unread)
Show new replies to your posts. (http://week4paug.net/index.php?action=unreadreplies)
All unread posts. (http://week4paug.net/index.php?action=unread;all)

It already appears to me that posts throughout the day are up.  I know I dont usually get to lurk during the day so I miss alot of the conversation, but it does feel to me that posting is up since the switch.  And hey, even slim is coming around.   :-D :-o
