That was a great show. Seriously great.
Second set was fucking sick
That simple jam - that is why we go

The song selection in the second set would make me puke, but it wasn't a bad show.

Winterqueen isn't short. The music after the lyrics is worth it, imo.

I (kinda) agree, but that drop back into the chorus after the build up is just brutal. Kicks me in the nuts every time.
Liked this one a lot more than the first night. Didn't hate the new tunes and Maze was hot and BOTT was fun. Second set was pretty baller too. Looking forward to a relisten.
said this last night and going to say it again... I wish the Dead Fare Thee Well'd in 09 cause Trey sounds fuckin' great! (other then the 7/21 Horn)
Stash -
composed parts by Trey have a very shrill tone. Sounds like his fingers haven't been practicing this style of arpeggio "jumping" that the composition requires. The jam is still the same as all 3.0. Lots of D notes by Trey instead of building tension and fucking ripping into a peak. Page sounds a little more awake this show. Mike sounds good in this stash. Fish sounds a little better here than he did in the opening tune last night
~9:45 some good tension playing by Trey. Builds it nicely. Pretty solid 3.0 version. Nothing special though
How Many People are You? -
I'd take a piss, and get a beer during this if it drops at a show
Winterqueen -
This one is lyrically cheesy to me, the music has always been interesting though. The composition between the lyrics is cool to me. It's pretty phish. The "jam" at the end but before the chorus refrain is good. It hits a sort of melodic peak. I think you can hear that extra practice in Trey. Listening to this makes me think he found the power of music from all the FTW practice. He just sounds invigorated, and like his mind is starting to sync up with his fingers.
It's cool to hear this process taking over in a good way, and to hear these loftier ideas drifting back into his playing versus what's become some trite fall back riffs that appear in almost every song, or did for pretty much all of 2009-2014. His timing is leaps and bounds better than it was, to hear him play some more complicated passages without having to take an excess number of pauses is awesome.
Heavy Rotation -
Guess I'd be getting shit faced this set, another beer run during this one. Vocals are ROUGH. Music is classic rawk-y. Lyrics suck though
Back on the train -
there we go.
This is really like awkward sex with an ex. One minute I'm bringing her to an unreal climax, and the next minute I just drooled in her eye and it brought the humping to a dead stop.
I think the new songs just actually need some practice time and to work out a lot of the arrangements. It sounds like they learned them all on their own.
This BOTT is solid btw. Momentum builds again. Set redemption perhaps?
Scabbard -
Wasn't this a TAB song? Sounds familiar. Reminds me of a slowed down version of Frank Zappa compositions
Maze -
Good version. Trey warms up nicely. Elements of hose present. But not 100% there yet. Shows promise
Mercury -
best new song so far imo. I like the melody and it isn't overly cheesy dad rock. It's the most "phishy" sounding of the new tunes too. Vocally, this one needs some harmony work like all the other new tunes too. Some out of key singing at points.
Possum -
early break to piss and get a beer
Eh. This is really up and down set to me. When they are on, it's really attention grabbing, and it's enthralling for me. But the new material, I think deflates the momentum, and I'm left feeling really bored for a lot of this set. If they had gone 7/21/97 with all of this new material, I'd really be drawn in to this stuff.
Through 3 sets I can hear the improvements that have left me in years past feeling completely distant from this music, but now I can hear the change in them. I'm really excited to hear this second set. I hope the improvisation delivers.

This is really up and down set to me.
I just sent the same thing in a text to Igbo & Barnesy.
I like the new tunes just fine. Heavy Rotation comes off horribly. I was cool with it on the album though. Mercury is cool. Scabbard is interesting, I guess, after one listen.
Tuned in for the simple and i thpught it was fucking great.

Troof!
Also, I like Winterqueen. There. I said it.
simple jam was ser
beautiful page/trey interplay in the beginning of the jam. ~ 5:45-6:50
trey takes the back seat and hit some rhythm chords
jam starts to open up
gets real dark with trey and page hitting some nice grunge low notes
jam materializes and trey starts hitting some nice low melodies
jam just fizzles out wiht some start and stop type jam
wish it just kept going
but the -> First Tube kicks you back into reality and gets you moving! great song choice here
A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing -
this gets to a nice place really quickly. Dirty jam, almost hits that "oxy" 2.0 style with the muddled, portal warping style sound they had for some 2.0 jams
~8 minutes -> 9 minutes is a sonic wall of thickness. Love the looping here by Trey.
segues nicely into
Waves -
composition and vocals are good. Jam is nice. Very Trey lead. Such fluidity in his playing. This is a fantastic version imo. space out style segue into
Wingsuit -
Good placement here. I liked how it "melted" into this.
pretty solid version
Farmhouse -
standard version
Simple -
pretty tight version
~7:30 pretty cool groove develops. I like where this is headed. ~11:45 this gets to a dark place. I like this minor groove they develop. Nice jam, def gets to a unique place. I hope this sort of sound remains a theme for this tour. So far we have seen a good amount of variety in their jamming through two shows. It looks like the melodic I > IV jams are done with for now.
First Tube -
kicking version.
Gin -
solid.
This was really a tale of two sets for me. They sounded pretty good for this second set. Segues were on point, and there was a diverse level of jamming happening as well. I really liked this second set, and I actually see some play back value with it. This gets me even more excited for next weekend.

Streamed most off the show last night and was let down in general. Contrary to what a lot of you are saying, Trey did not sound that good to me. There were a few moments I saw the same fluidity he had in Chicago (especially noticeable in bluesey tunes like BOTT and Possum) but overall he sounded sub-par 3.0ish, imo.
I do think it's pretty awesome they've been playing a bunch of new tunes. Hopefully they keep 'em coming and are able to test them out the first few shows and then weed out the ones that don't work (:::cough::: heavy rotation :::cough::: )
I missed How Many People Are You? -- what was that like?
The song portion of Heavy Rotation was embarrassing. Just really awkward musically and vocally. Jam was fine.
Psyched to see them playing Scabbard (is it just me, or do a few parts of that song kinda sound like parts of TTE?) Either way, I enjoyed it.

^ pretty accurate description for those composed lines.
Mercury -- Gonna have to give that another listen, my first impression was that I liked the individual sections but the flow was weird.. maybe I just felt that way cuz I'd never heard it before. I did enjoy the jam in 7...
Looking forward to the rest of the tour and hoping I didn't set my expectations for Trey too high.... because he didn't live up to them for this show. I want some of those fluid, extended runs that I heard him play with ease in Chicago. Didn't really hear much like that last night.
I'm 100% on board for this second set.
Didn't change my life but I will revisit it.
Have not heard the heavy rotation yet, but i have always been a big fan of it on that Page album. So i like that they played it, i just hope it is good.
This show was a step up from the night before, but that's not saying too much.... both nights were very 'meh' to these ears.
Diggin' the new tunes for the most part, though, except for Heavy Rotation (yikes)
Really hoping they step it up a few notches....

I too, enjoyed the album version.
check out Trey's lead at 7:34/7:35 in Maze, he goes for the '94 esque ascending bend peak style that was common back in the day. not quite as riveting however its cool to hear him at least trying to summons his old technique.

Here, here
I've been waiting for this one since they started butchering page tunes a few years back
This second set is freaking great 3.0 Phish. I love it start to finish. I mean, looking at the setlist from the armchair without listening I'd give a huge meh... but actually listening to it I am engaged at every turn. It's nearly perfect.
Would I have been happier to hear a Tweezer, Bowie, YEM, or some other classic big tune? I don't know. I would have been happy to hear them, but I don't think this set is missing them. It's really good and stands on its own.
And they did throw out an old-school bone with the Gin encore.

We were right in front of mike for the 1st set. I really enjoyed seeing all the new tunes from that perspective. Can't wait to relisten as they all kinda jumble together in my head by now. 2nd set fit the mellow bend vibe, but it was way to mellow for me. By the time the show picked up with simple, 1st tube, and gin...the shit was over.
Didn't catch the hype at all with the second set.
55 min and the songs didn't seem rehearsed
"Easy" song structure tunes with one decent jam.
Simple was pretty good, but was expecting more with all the reviews I've read.
Stoked for Phil tonight!!

Wow, Terrible. Sounds like a band working through a cover song the first time, and it is not tight yet. Butchered. The intro was painful to get through.

Sup duderz, just getting my brain put back together after this run, a couple brief thoughts. . .
The new songs threw my off on night one as I didn't know they had so much material prepared, a dude next to me said they have eight new songs so if he's right there's at least one more out there. (Although Heavy Rotation and Scabbard aren't technically new. . . )
Anyway, night one had a cool funk theme going with Tube, Wolfman's, Ghost, No Men in No Man's Land and Boogie On and the Mike's was really tight and above average. I hadn't seen Fuego before so that was a personal highlight. But, with no real jamming the show left me wanting more. Don't get me wrong, I had a great time and Les Schwab is a friggin' sweet place to see a show, but I'd be lying if I said that the first night blew me away or really had the x-factor of an outstanding show.
The second night however brought out more interesting new tunes than the first with the Phish debut of Scabbard and Mercury and the energy in the venue during Maze was off the charts. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it was the best Page solo in Maze in years, at least that I've heard and Trey brought the fire too. That Maze alone gave me the oomph I had been craving. Even Possum was fun with a bonus Page organ solo. I never realized Scabbard borrowed so heavily from McGrupp, definitely excited to hear them take another crack at it.
Then there was set II, yeah not that impressive of a setlist, but everything was just so well played and mellow psychedelic tunes like Waves fit the West Coast vibe perfectly. Then there was the Simple where shit got DIRTY. Was the best ever anything? No, but it was fucking awesome and satisfying in a major way and the following First Tube blew the lid off the amphitheater again.
One of the friend's I was with mentioned that Gin was her favorite song and we even discussed how they rarely played it in the second set anymore where they traditionally really take it out, a la the excellent Gorge 09 version. When they started it up for the encore, she flipped out and it was so awesome to share in her joy, at the time I thought it may have even been the first Gin encore ever. It was the perfect capper for a show that was exceptional in unexpected ways.
While I was underwhelmed with the first show, the second show was the soul cleansing affair that I needed.
Had a great couple of days, even if I only got to see the Portland paugers briefly. Played some disc golf with a buddy I hadn't seen in years, crushed Black Bear Diner for breakfast and hit up some excellent brews at Crux.
On a side note I took my first hit from a proper dab rig back at the motel and I gotta wonder how people really enjoy that stuff. Personally, I felt like I was gonna pass out and had to go lie down and watch some eyelid movies until drifting off to sleep. Certainly not an awful experience, but it did effectively end my night. I guess I'm just too old for whipper snapper weed. :tte:
sick writeup hicks
Thanks Hicks, nice review. I think the dabs are a tolerance thing, I had a similar experience at Dicks a few years ago.

i just skimmed through a video and saw a small bong and a guy heating and cooling a nail or screw or something a bunch of times with a blowtorch and i just figured i'd rather stay ignorant.
Yeah a blowtorch was indeed involved.
I shoulda just stuck with my flowers so I could have kept partying old man style.
Dabs seems like a lot of work just to put oneself to sleep.
This Maze jam has some solid work from Page. Something about it sounds different than others to me. Enjoying it thoroughly.
Dabs are some ser business.
I take a dab saturday morning and im good til around afternoon. esp of some indica, sativa dabs just make me feel uncomforable.
I like to dab at night and lamp out on the couch for a while, but if I only had wax during the day I would def be using a vape pen to take some smaller hits throughout the day

The crowd, including myself of course, was going absolutely bonkers during Page's solo! Definitely a huge highlight of the run, shit was off the chain!
