I had tix, but gave them away as my son is sick and we had come home...
For myself, Couch Tour sucks compared to the actual show...
I imagine I would have been unhappy with the Setlist either way, but it would have been nice to see Golden Age (need to see) and TCOB...
Alas, I'm still looking for a Tela...
Terry
think i will stay up to listen to this tweezer.
best of the weekend.
Good times. Second set was a banger!

best of the weekend.
Haven't heard a note, but setlist wise.... this seems to have the most potential.
Bachman Turner Overdrive! Just got up to find out they played one of my all time favorite rawk songs. How was it?
Second set was packed with quality improv. Such a pleasure from top to bottom. TCOB was hilarious and awesome. Transition into it was impeccable.
Probably won't even download the first two nights, but excited to hear this second set.
Well, it looks like I have a total of 3 jams from this weekend to listen to.
(Carini, Tweezer, and Golden Age)

Is it worth my time to spin this Tweezer > Golden Age combo, or should I just continue to listen to the new White Denim album? The two are the same length, time wise.
don't remember much but the Tweezer jam was huge
Piper had a pretty classic rock groove feel to it from the outset, wasn't surprised when it segued into something classic rock. Even the 2001 had something funky and original going on.
I was dead tired on the couch waiting for set II to start, they rocked it so hard that I was wide awake and feelin' it for most of the second set.
A set worthy of Hampton, overall there are some highlights from the run but most of them come from this set.
This is the only night worth listening to. Trey put the whale to rest for the most part which made for interesting playing. Setlist was a lil predictable, but the quality was there.
If you're scoring this one at home: Phish-1, Tour-3......
best second set I have seen in a while
The crowd last night was the best one I've personally witnessed in years, possibly since they've come back.
Tweezer> Golden Age> Piper> Taking Care of Business is the confirmed real deal.
Moar plz, k thnx bai.
glad they pulled out a winner for every1 that made it thru the run. :beerbang:
I planned on listening to this show at work this morning, but left my headphones! I'll have to wait until this evening. Looks solid.
I just don't understand why that can't play like that every night when they're clearly capable
this tweezer is indeed money.
i was skeptical at first, mostly on treys ability to come up with anything new as he whaled away.
then all of a sudden...
some nasty psychedelic fall phish improv.
well done.

This
Hell, I would take every other night at this point.
1st set def has some whale'd out moments (Roses, 46 Days, parts of Divided Sky), but overall pretty good. A lot tighter in terms of playing than night one and two. I'm interested to see how this second set sounds, as it's got quite the level of praise on the internets today.

Freal, I hate to say it but a set like this just highlights how unsatisfying the first two nights were for me.
Even here Trey's playing during Sand is basically unlistenable.
I don't get how he can bring the goods for the entire set and then play donkey piss like that.
That was a Tweezer. DAMN.
The Tweezer had a "soundcheck jam" feel to me - if that makes sense. Totally dug it. I thought GA sucked up until the jam. They were sleepwalking through it - I almost skipped it thinking there was no way a decent jam was going to materialize.

sunday ticket tree!
more pics to come!
Golden Age is awesome as well.
Honestly though, they lose me after this.
I would have much rather seen
Paul & Silas > Tweezer -> Golden Age -> Piper > Slave
Encore: ADITL > Taking Care of Business
Keep it simple, keep it improv focused. The first half of the set is some of the better 3.0 playing out there.
If i would of known tickets grew on trees, i would of for sure made the trek down!
Looking forward to giving this a listen tonight, was way too tired last night to follow.
After talking to SF yesterday, not much positive was said about the first two nights, really glad this third night was finally worth the listen.
Really excited for this... Tweezer> Golden Age> Piper> Taking Care of Business :music:

I liked Piper and thought the segue into TCOB was slick and the cover was classic Phish being Phish.
2001 had a little extra sauce and was tasty too.
I'm not saying they're bad versions. I just think it goes back to the classic conundrum of 3.0, cramming way too many songs into a set, and not leaving the necessary space to step back and play to the moment.
The TCOB couldn't have happened on its own. The > from Piper was seamless.

this show was 19 songs. I think 17 is a good number, but 19 or 20 is fine and many great shows have more songs than that or around the same number.
I haven't listened to this show yet and probably won't until after Hartford, but on paper, I think the nmber of songs seemed right.
Yeah TCOB was such a perfect call there and the segue so good, it was right where it needed to be. I had a big stupid grin on my face; so fun. At first it sounded like we were gonna get a Real Me. Love that song but for this moment I'm glad it was the BTO tune.

It's improv mang! That's the way it works -- sometimes it clicks, sometimes it doesn't. It's not always something you have control over
And when your band doesn't practice.... it doesn't click so often...
Psyched to hear this Tweezer!
I like the Tweezer.
Really enjoyed the last 4 minutes the most.
You figured they would stop, but they pushed on and it was cool.
Golden Age was laughable.
Trey doesn't attempt to hit the high notes and forgets half the lyrics.
He also stops playing the main riff during most if the song.
The jam was pretty basic and then they made some noise.
The End.
Sounded like they had practiced TCOB and that's why they were able to segue into it so smoothly and play it well.
The unique take on Slave deserves note -- they spent a while just varying the dynamics before jumping into Trey's usual fast-strum finish. Dynamism is something they generally haven't paid much attention to this era, but when they do, as in the Tahoe Tweezer for example, hey whaddya know, it pays off.

The Slave was really cool. I've never seen Trey do volume swells quite like that. It was dope.

it's just whales fucking for half of that tweezer.
the back half is nice, though.
all told, a nice set. but also, all told, this isn't any better than the rest of '13. which even for 3.0 has been pretty subpar, epic tahoe tweezers notwithstanding.
Tweezer didn't really do it for me.... like cactusfan just said.... it's mostly whale with a few highlights.
The last 4-5 minutes are nice and I DO give them credit for keeping it going, but Trey still seemed lost for a theme.
2001 was pretty nice for 3.0. = they did something with it. Piper was a mess but the segue into Taking Car of Business was $. Sand was also a mess, WTF is Trey doing?!?!
Still -- Wish I could have been there. Hampton is a special place.

Ha, there is some truth there. At a certain point, it becomes reading the tea leaves in the paug thread themselves which takes years to master (a degree of positive comment in this or that particular member versus panning by several others, etc, so on and so forth). Obviously, we are all our own experts in Phish, and on a certain level I could care fuck all what anyone on the paug thinks about this or that show - I'll be the judge as will you - but the paug can be the color of shades through which you listen to shows.
That is all I was getting at.

Yeah, I was really digging it during the simulcast but on playback it's whale city for the first several minutes. It's got it's good points and I love a lot of parts of this set (and the night before) but the first part of the Tweez is all whaled-up. Golden Age is rough through the versus but is redeemed by the jam, so who cares. Good show though and looking forward to hearing their progress over the next two weeks. Hope they get their voices back, thems some hoarse motherfuckers.......

So true.....I totally forgot they were playing last weekend, am chilling on a business trip in Columbus, Ohio tonight, close a huge deal, get back to my room, remember they played Hampton and pull up Livephish to check timings, see some interesting looking Ghost and Tweezer times, open up the 'paug and BOOM - hate filled attacks on my favorite band of the past 20 years. Don't you fuckers have anything better to do then rip on the phish??
Seriously though - this band does just enough to keep us coming back hoping for what - improvement over the past 2 or 3 years? I don't know. I honestly hoped I would open up the PSD threads and finally see joyous consensus just ONCE....and it never happens. I keep waiting for Sophist to say, "holy shit. they've been practicing." <- never happens.

I think this is a huge improvement. a 23 minute Tweezer and a 19 minute Ghost mean fucking business. Especially the Saturday Ghost; Trey royally fucked up the first peak attempt when the 3 guys around him gelled, and then they broke it back down, and built it back up for some redemption.
This Tweezer is fucking WEIRD. I listened to it last night as I lay in bed, and couldn't help but think of how CRUSHING Mike and Fish were. That groove somewhere in the middle is just so.... PSYCHEDELIC. Its SO weird!!! Its SO awesome though! Fucking gnarly-ass indoors Phish.
I'm half-worried about Trey, though. It became painfully obvious during the start of the Carini jam: Page, Mike, and Fish are fucking DESTROYING the grooves, and Trey.... man, he just has no idea what to do. I feel so bad for the guy. This Tweezer has a lot of that, until Trey tweaks out with his whammy pedal and makes that whirrrrrrvvvving screechy thing, which is AWESOME, but i feel like he gets there after realizing that he just can't cut it by "soloing" over the other guys anymore.
The same thing happened in Ghost. The real peak didn't happen until Trey turned on his delay and did that cycling loop thing like the Dicks 12 Sand and the end of the Dicks 12 Chalkdust have.
Also, this Tweezer is example A of the whale WORKING. Listen to all that space!!! Trey is playing slow licks, and yeah, the 2nd theme he tries working isn't as good as the first, but.... this is how to use it IF he must use it. Man listen to Page and Mike!!!!
These grooves are huge!! So interlocking! Mike and Page are playing off each other probably the best I've heard so far in 3.0.
There are a few hoarse whale licks, for sure, but.... by 9:17 things turn murky and wet. Fishman is on the ride cymbal, and all is right in the world. Lets get weird, fuckers.
Modify: EVIL march at 10:46. Hell fucking YEAH. Here we go!

10/20/13 set 2 might be the most solid fucking set of 3.0. This shit is the goods straight through. Even Sand, which is whale'd out to all hell, works. And OMG THIS SLAVE!!!!!! Dynamics!!!! wow!!!! New rhythms!!!
I just re-listened for a 2nd straight time, and this set is 3.0-perfect straight to back. The segue into 2001 could have been a little more juicy for my tastes, but its still at least a little noisy. I felt it would have been more epic had there been more tension/noise/loops built up before the drop into the beat.
Sand.... showcases where the whale can work, IMO. Listen to what the band is doing, and how they are playing. Page becomes the "page turner" for the music, the one who plays the cadences and progressions that keep the music moving forward and building tension and excitement. In this capacity, Trey is then freed up to add wails of sonic disgust and brush strokes of razor blades against a chalk board; the whale is ugly, and he knows it. This is where it works perfectly. Mike and Fish dominate the low end, and Page hooks up against them both to play the progression and move the story forward, and Trey adds the ugly tension. It works quite well in this mode, I think. Shrieky, twisted, discordant groove.
This Slave is fucking great, though. Wow. Way to go guys.
Also noted from a 2nd listen: Golden Age and Phish's newfound groove. Something is different with these guys this tour.... their grooves are fucking electric and perfectly-apportioned. By that I mean, they are lock-stepping with each other in the correct Fall-'97-of-ways, where say.... Fish will be doing a beat that covers 8 beats. Mike plays a thought that goes for 5, which Page compliments with the perfect 3 beat ending. Trey will then be interlocked with Fish to add rhythm. I don't know quite how to explain it in words, but when you hear the 4 of them connecting, the groove kind of "expands" and becomes greater than the sum of its parts. They are finishing each others' musical thoughts, and the group becomes the "riff", if you will.
This is something that I have not heard at all during 3.0. Most of the great jams have been a musical "stacking", where the ideas are layered directly on top of each other. By that I mean each person plays ideas that are equally long, or evenly divisible: Fish does a 16 beat "thought", that Page and Trey each layer successive 8 beat phrases over top, while Mike plays a steady 4 beat pattern underneith the whole time, if that makes sense.
There is a push-and-pull now. The Tweezer jam has the clearest example of what I'm talking about during the 14-16 minute segment.
Also needing to be noted: Fishman has been playing his ass off! Listen to his kick drum. He's throwing in crazy pick-up beats and lots of flourishes with his feet. Its fucking great. Page is the other massive MVP, because his musical ideas have been so clear and concrete, its pretty amazing. I haven't heard him ever play this clearly before, and by clearly I mean the translation of his musical ideas. His thoughts are complete, perfectly placed, complimentary, progressive (in that it moves the music forward) and just plain cool.
Listen to his outro solo during Piper. The shit is balls-in.
Not to fade away from Trey, I have to say that Trey HAS made strides of improvement. He's playing more shreddy stuff (at least for 3.0's definition of shred). That, and he's framing his ideas in a more rhythmically clear way. This is allowing the band to lock into those expansive grooves I was talking about early. Like in the Tweezer, and ESPECIALLY in the Golden Age. He's doing it with his solos and his rhythm work. Piper has the best example of him doing this with a solo that I can think of right now. Early on in the jam, he locks into this theme/lick that he repeats, and the band is able to build off of it so well. The main point, is that he is playing FAR less directionless noodly stuff.
We have good Phish here guys! They're doing things!

Dude even this first set is fucking good!!!! Back On The Train is even good! How the hell does that happen!?
The lesson here is, if they MUST play Back On The Train, at least do it at Hampton. Whatever the case is, that venue makes this song good. I haven't heard a version as engaging and well-played musically since 3/7/09.
Roses jam?! Yes!
Page flailing on the piano during 46 Days?! Yes!!! Moarz!!! Get it Trey! Oh man!!! 6:37!!!! Yes!!!!
Man, this might actually be the best show, start-to-finish, of 3.0. I've got the rest of the 1st set to finish up, but man... this is looking good.
I mean, if they're able to make Back On The Train enjoyable and not boring............ that's saying something massive right there.
3.0-perfect?

I was poking fun at his rationalization for why he liked it. It's ridiculous. It would be far more commendable to simply come out and say, I enjoyed that. I wouldn't have said a word if that was the case (as it is with others who have stated that).

I was poking fun at his rationalization for why he liked it. It's ridiculous. It would be far more commendable to simply come out and say, I enjoyed that. I wouldn't have said a word if that was the case (as it is with others who have stated that).
I guess I was just tired from reading three gumbo posts with three snarky shots from you in a row.

The tweezer has some cool moments but just some terrible whaling. So i went ahead and called PETA on Trey. Stop the Whaling.
checked out set II today, got through Tweezer > Golden Age. Tweezer had some nice moments, I really wish I had more time to give it a proper listen and review. Golden Age was good also esp. Fishman's drumming, nice job Fish!

Only listened to pieces of the first set and now on the Tweezer, which imo, is the real deal.
Dark, ominous, totally kept my attention. The whale effect only made a brief appearance at first and does not deter me from enjoying it immensely.
I don't want to listen to too much of this tour before seeing the cpl shows this weekend.
I want RJ to do a 10/18/13-style review of this show.
Please.

really digging this Golden Age, sweet jam! I like it so much I went back through all the versions played so far this year, only Bangor and 14July come close to its prowess. Hollywood has a nice jam however its too short. Dick's was not there at all imo.
Mpp version was ok.

I've always liked the way they play it, the jam is hit or miss. They nail it this night. Its not type II or anything but they jam it well. Page has a nice growl, Mike is hooking up nicely with Fish, Trey adds some nice lines instead of his usual cheese. pretty cool stuff.

Tweezer didn't really do it for me.... like cactusfan just said.... it's mostly whale with a few highlights.
The last 4-5 minutes are nice and I DO give them credit for keeping it going, but Trey still seemed lost for a theme.
I wasn't feeling it either. It just went nowhere.
Sundays have been the night you don't wanna miss this year and this show proved that out. The crowd was wound up and ready by show time when "Julius" opened strong and amped the energy up even higher. "Funky Bitch" revealed Mike to be in better voice and ready to go. Page gave us a great organ solo, Mike crooned a bit, and Trey rocked out on his solo. Better than average version.
"Back On The Train" eased into being and we settled into the groove. For the second consecutive night I was perched on Mike's side and you could feel the sub woofers rumbling at your feet.
After a fun "BOTT" they rolled into a nice version of "Roses Are Free". This features an interesting couple of minutes of jamming at the end but it didn't go too far before they wrapped it up and launched into "Sample In A Jar". Next, "Ginseng Sullivan" (a song by Norman Blake!) delighted me. After the bluegrass came "46 Days" which did as rock songs do before "Divided Sky" changed the room.
On Saturday night, at the encore break, the fans tried to bring back the old fashioned lighters-in-the-air tribute which sensibly died out along with the use of Zippos because of so many scorched thumbs. The practice has re-surged a bit in the form of cell phones raised to the sky but this is tacky and, fortunately hasn't caught on with the Phish crowd. On Sunday, at the pause in "Divided Sky", the lighters came out. I've recently felt that the audience was missing the message with this part of the song. Aren't we supposed to quiet down and feel the void screaming into our ears before freaking out from the tension? Maybe that's just me. Whatever the band is looking for from the fans, this night's crowd was not going to quiet down. Instead they turned the moment back onto the band and put up so many lighters that Kuroda turned out the stage lights, while the band stood/sat still watching and listening in a pause that lasted 2.5 minutes. I shoul dalso mention that the song itself was played pretty damned well.
The set wrapped with the always welcome "Bold As Love" with Page shining on vocals and Trey basically kicking ass throughout.
When the band returned for set two, Trey addressed the half dozen people on the floor in front of Mike that were all dressed as Waldo. Once he determined that they weren't dressed as prisoners, he turned and dedicated the set opener to the folks who'd had a "Paul and Silas" banner on the balcony edge all weekend. I was through the roof as this made four bluegrass songs in three nights and this was my first "Paul asd Silas".
The vocals had scarcely faded away before Trey started playing the "Tweezer" riff. This one is pretty big. It rocks, grooves and spreads out into space over the course of 20+ minutes. They did miss an obvious opportunity to slip into "What's The Use" but it wasn't necessary and, instead, they jumped into "Golden Age". I've never really liked this song. I did dance for it because, after the spacey "Tweezer", I was ready to move. This too contained a significant jam, stretching to more than fifteen minutes and serving as an upbeat answer to "Tweezer" for a while before it too descended into heavy weirdness. This, in fact, may be the jam of the weekend.
Once again eschewing a transition, Trey simply starting strumming "Piper" as the previous odd strains dissipated. The shakey start made up for itself with a compact yet fun version of the song that jumped off into rock jamming quiet quickly. One minute, we were hearing "Piper", the next there are hints of "The Real Me". Soon after that we were hearing a more generalized sort of rock and roll jamming that resolved into the first ever performance of, "Taking Care of Business" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive. The band (Trey) laughed their way through the song so it's unclear if this was rehearsed but I'd wager that it was not. This is the kind of song that you kind of know without ever trying thanks to FM radio. The jam never really got back off the ground once it had landed on the BTO number. Trey played with his feedback and they finally jumped into "2001".
Trey played a bit with Kuroda, working on some call and response between his chord hits and Chris flashing the lights. That probably looked better from the front but I enjoyed watching Trey make it happen. Otherwise the fairly standard, dance number faded into "Sand". This decent version of "Sand" is a bit longer than "2001" and contains the usual Trey distortion-laden soloing and possibly a "Flashlight" tease. They finish the song and get right into the set-closing "Slave To The Traffic Light".
This version of "Slave" is gorgeous. The band displays masterful dynamics, group interplay and lovely solos. in a song that would have perfectly closed out the weekend. However, there was till an encore to be played. They began the encore with "A Day In The Life" sending my thoughts racing back to the first time Phish played Hampton and what a thrill it was to be in that room for my other favorite band. Page sang it beautifully (as he had done with everything that weekend) and after the perfect peak, they rocked the shit out of the house with "Tweezer Reprise". Mike dropped two ton bombs all over the place and Trey got all marchy marchy around the stage and we all jumped and cheered and left the Coliseum with smiles.
STFU!!!!!!!!

TCOB was awesome! The recordings don't capture the lid blowing off the place going from that ending groove of Piper>TCOB. I remember having a hard time hearing the vocals right at the beginning. This was a great set of music! Sunday Phunday!
