Damn, missed out on yet another LST. And I had to leave early last night. Disease 2 nights in a row? WTF? They better have taken it waaay out there. 2 less-than-ten-minute Diseases back-to-back is a fail IMO.

This was my opinion as well, although tonights was definitely better.

That's exactly where I'm at right now. I like what Mike and Fish are doing.
I had fun
Great time tonight show was a lot better than last night. The hood and yem were firee and the disease jam went out there. Pollock prints are sick tooo! :wtu:
One of two things is happening right now...all this travel this year (I have basically been on the road since Hershey) is wearing me out or I am starting to lose interest in a band that clearly wants me to sit at home.
First set was pretty good. Really enjoyed the Tweezer, great placement on tweeprise and the Meatstick lyrics in it gave the set some cohesion. Then...for the first time EVER, I felt like the band slapped me in the face. Im sorry but 2 DwD's on back to back nights, with only an hour drive in between felt like an insult. It killed the 2nd set for me, I was pretty pissed to the point when the started YEM, I just left. Talked to G. Augustos brother about this as he was literally leaving right behind me and also felt pretty pissed off.
I really am quite disappointed! :shakehead: :shakehead: :shakehead: :shakehead: :frustrated:
I am of course not "on tour" but don't really understand your point thatfargone. It's not like they played 7 or 8 repeats. One repeat isn't too bad imo especially when they are played completely differently in different parts of the show. They played Jennifer Dances in back to back shows in '99 if that makes you feel better! The Providence DWD was a scorcher to get the show started. Last night's DWD was a completely different beast. It went out there someplace. It may be time for you to get off of tour there man.
For me it this whole tour minus Utica...I did the majority of summer and only missed Broomfield this fall...out of all that I honestly feel there is almost no progress this tour. We are seeing many, MANY songs on a 2 show rotation this tour. Free, Halleys etc are STILL not being explored, I feel Mikes Grooves are becoming a joke and they still simply refuse to jam.
Not that last night was bad, it was one of the better fall shows IMO, but they clearly want us to stop touring...and if they continue in this 3.0 mold for the next 5 nights...well I wont see many of you next summer.
I think it's real easy to get burned out on shows. depends on a number of factors.
I was in complete disbelief when they started disease. COMPLETE disbelief. but you need to realize that they were going to play it whether you are happy about it or not so you just enjoy it. the jam was nice. if you listen to the two versions, they are nothing alike. one was a short tighter version to start a show and last night was was a start to a jamming set that got pretty evil with kuroda just mesmorizing the crowd. isn't that why we all love this band?
show was good. first set had its ups and downs. 2nd set was good. lights were great last night.
I'll think I'll go back tonight.
With the boys playing like they are now, the music come's third on the list of reasons to tour. Reason #1 CK5, reason #2 The Experience (aka The people and 'Party Favors') and then Reason #3 The Music.
I wasn't there, and I'm not on tour, but the thing with :phish: and any other band that relies on improv -
it's not what they play, but how they play it.
every DWD is (or should be) different. It's about the jam.
I didn't hear anyone complain when they played Antelope 2 shows in a row this summer. (6/20 and 6/22)
of course, it's all personal taste, etc
oh wait, I have a complaint from last night.
to get your floor wristband, you had to turn in your ticket which you don't get back. sucks for some people that will need to email phish to get a live downloads code. and it sucks because you don't have a ticket.
oh and after they checked my bag at security, the woman wanted to check it again for me to get a wristband. I mean, I must have had a pretty good scheme to sneak something into it by moving the 10 feet forward.
venue was good though. security seemed nonexistent and let people have a good time.
Yeah, I hear you...but after traveling 3000 miles in a week....I am pretty let down regardless by the number of repeats in 7 shows. Not just the disease...but all the songs they are playing every other night...Halloween better fucking kick ass as the only reason I can come up with for such few songs being played and the number of repeats is that they have a very challenging album they are rehearsing.
Also keep in mind all these "back to back" shows you all are mentioning are totally different...off days, large travel between....not less than an hour in consecutive nights. BOOOOOO!!!!!

with them not really having any monster jams and the number of songs in their catalogue, repeats should be expected. they've basically repeated the full augusta show this weekend except reba and I have no problem with it. it happened last fall too.
I remember at portland last year, they played a song or two on back to back nights and played one of those songs 3 of 4 shows.
I hear you on getting burned out but I think what is happening should be expected.
I'm avoiding tracking out last night's set because I don't want it to influence tonight's show in a negative way.

its funny when phish playing one of their songs for a crowds enjoyment makes some of their fans feel insulted.
especially when the band obviously wants to play it for their own enjoyment too.

that's funny because that point completely hit me during dwd about 30 seconds in. I just watched them and they "wanted" to play it and were loving played it so I decided I might as well have a good time too. worked out well. the antelope point made earlier in the thread is the same thing.

lol. I was trying to figure out how close those places were.
i mean at first we were like wtf too... but once the jam starts its should blast you off into that special place where you really dont give a fuck, feel the vibe, & 5mins later forget what song it even is in the first place.
i try to have a really open mind and let them do the painting.

I got 10 more this year and will have fun at all of them. BUT, I surely am not going to leave a "I had fun" statement as a review and pretend the show was AMAZING...you all have more to say about me not liking this show than reasons you had for liking it. I feel thats pretty telling.
We all had fun, I was chilling with an old Dead head at his first show and talked to him about Phish and we traded stories...that was more fun than the show for me. I wouldn't change anything about this fall. But, I do this to see the band get better, night after night. I have talked extensively about this with some of you that I see every night...I just have for the first time since Dec 4 2009, lowered my expectations to have a good time. That is troubling to me as a fan of this band.
it's why I like having another band to fall back on and like seeing smaller venue shows. for me, I need a mix of music.
in 10 more shows, you should get 5 more DWDs and 7 antelopes.

Phish is the only "Jam Band" I see. I love other music and see as much of it as I can also. But, I really expect more out of these guys now, I feel that is what we all should have. The energy is off night to night with the crowd and the shows that are off to me are the ones with less energy and I did have high expectations after Utica and I guess I just needed a double dose of 3.0 reality to get back down to a level where I just take what I get and have fun. That is not what any of us should be doing...it confirms every single thing people have been critical about this band. Its a very weird feeling being the most critical person in a review thread. Thats what November and Dec is for. :-D Many of you don't fully know me and a lot of what I am saying is not at all a deterrent for me...even when I am down on a show...at the time, in the moment...I am having a ball. (ie. those of you who were with me @ Deer creek for TTE) But when the dust settles, and the moment has passed...to just justify poor playing, bad sets and not living up to a standard they themselves have set...I feel we do the band and ourselves a disservice.

To all you Critics that continually overanalyze all the minutia of a joy that we are, imo priviledge to see night in and night out, stop all the whining and criticizing and just enjoy it! When you start doing that, holla at me.
Sorry, but I had a fucking blast night!
Thank you! It is a priviledge.
No offense to thatfargone, but I'd probably be pretty burnt had I gone on tour since Hershey. Might be time to hang'em up for a while.
I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't expect the 90s again. I'll take it for what it is, enjoy the shows. Most of my random listening will remain 1.0.
In a way, it's history repeating itself, but don't want to start that debate up again.

I don't get the DWD repeat hate.
Didn't bother me... disease is one of the best songs ever....

yea - when :phish: were at their hottest, most precise, they were playing lots of shows with a much more limited playlist than what they are playing now. Blame Trey if you want, but it's easier to play a perfect Reba, Stash, Fluff, and YEM if you're playing them every 2nd or 3rd show than every 10 show.

I think this is very important to note as if he busted these out once in a blue moon and botched it, we'd be vrying about that so I guess you need to pick you battles.

good point, but personally, when it comes to the Phish I prefer no battles at all. :smoke:

eh, those are his songs which he/they have played a zillion times.
the issue should not be getting through them, it should be making them interesting.
they don't seem to want to make these songs interesting anymore, just get through em and on to the next...

I thought I could help out with some confusion as to why phish played DWD two days in a row. There was an e. coli scare with the tap water in Amherst and people were instructed to not drink the tap water.

so somehow McGrupp and I ended up back at a Frat house in Hartford, CT after this show..... it was weird. All the frat dudes looked at us like we were a different species.
Our short interaction with them went something like...
Frat Boy #1: "So what was your favorite song of the night?"
Me and McGrupp: "uuuhhhhhh......"
Frat Boy#2: "You can't ask these guys that... they think every song is the best."

I could tell she wasn't gonna have it though.
i Really like this Meatstick... Trey rips into both solos with a great sense of passion and vigor. I love not being jaded on Phish anymore, and actually enjoying contemporary music played by this band. The end jam was kinda non-existent, but Trey pulled it down in a kinda cool way.
Jumping right to the Tweezer... right after the first chorus they seem really playful. Its awesome that this sort of Phish band exists again.
It really must suck for all of you that can't enjoy this stuff. Its a shame, really. I can't imagine being that much of a curmudggeon, even though I think about death everyday. Why are you wasting your time hating? Do you really think it makes you look that cool? That your h3tt7, because you were "there" in the "old days"? Get off your fucking high horse.
This band is great again. They aren't going to play with the precision of 93 anymore, so stop expecting it. They aren't grossly fucking anything up, and thats fine, because the amount of playful joy and vigor that they are bringing to the setlists and jamming is just fantastic. I'll take these deep, spontaneous, out-of-nowhere 5-7 minute Type II jams over a 20 minute PH Ghost that does absolutely fucking NOTHING.
LOVE Trey at the start of this jam with the harmonics. Ahhh Page on the RHODES!!!! YES!!!!!! Fish on the cowbell, Gordon keeping it active. Dude this groove is butterrrrrr. If you can't get into this, you need to stop coming to this website.
oooo this is getting weird!!!!!!! ~6:50, and Trey comes back in with some reallllly nice lines just after 7 mins.... OH MANNN!!!!!!!!!! 7:13!!!!!!!!!1!! FUCK @!!!!!!!! DUDE ITS A PHISH SPACE@@@@!!!!!
This feels open like the 11/17/97 Tweezer feels open, at the start of the jam. Incredible. Mmmm the whale is kind of tasteful here.... I LOVE page's piano comping softly around 8:16.
This jam is great. I don't care how it ends. oh man, this fucking kills. Serious jazzchill Phish at 8:36 until after 9 minutes.....
I really need to get some of what Gumbo eats! This show was decent at best.
TWEEZZArrR BALLS PEAKING!!!!!!!!!! W AHHHHH!!!!!!
this shit is fucking awesome. That was sick. old school ending!!!!
I remember thinking the tweezer was REALLY groovy at the beginning...
But my memory kind of trails off for the last 5-7 minutes.
Going back now to listen...

Tweezer was good. Ending has been done like that again since Alpine though.
The groove at the beginning of the jam section in Tweezer is really nice.
I love trey's harmonics, and fish is doing some really interesting stuff with the snare and hi-hats. Almost feels like a stutter-step GBOTT beat.
and I'll say it again: Halfway To The Moon is fucking COOL.
I approve of this Tweezer. Def has some heat. I wouldn't call it a standout version, but it certainly doesn't hurt my ears.
Really sick great start to the last three I did!! I think Manchester took the cake other than AC....
Loved this show.
Ya know.... I really miss hearing :phish: really dig into and out of jams these days. On this night they really delivered....most noteably the DWD jam. I know, I know,..you say they always jam the Disease but not quite. They really are locked in for this tune. It really brings a smile to my face to hear them really dig down into this jam and fucking claw their way out of the deep with little to no hesitation. :music:
Phish: Down With Disease [HD] 2010-10-23 - Amherst, MA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlGrAhMCX_I#ws)
There many other points of this night which make me smile.... whether it be the "Curtain" teases from Mike/Fish at the end of Disease, the segue from Caspian -> Halfway to the Moon, or Trey's use of the loop from the end of Boogie On and BLEEDING it into the Maze intro... Good stuff. :beerbang:
Just listened to this show in the library today!
the yem is fiya! I love the jam in this one. I agree I feel like they used disease in prov to hype the crowd up then came out Umass1 second set saying alright now its time to venture into the nitty gritty for this disease.
This show was a lot of fun, def liked it better than the second night. First set delivers too. Manchester and Utica def blow prov > Umass outta the water.
