Apple TV is too big to bring with, really, so I've never tried. I have an hdmi cable and adapter for the iPad that I've used in hotels for a long time, but I left it in NYC and am waiting on superfreak to send it back. Actually, he probably already dropped it in the mail and the beavers at the border are chewing on it for a while.

well, apple tv doesnt work on these networks either.  just go easy on my little chromecast friend.  you make it sound like its intentionally trying to fuck with you.

Can you tried creating a hotspot with your phone instead of using hotel internet?

I couldn't get that working either.... At least not using the iPad. Plus I don't have unlimited data, so watching movies on netflix via hotspot would pretty much use up all my monthly data. A waste when there's free wifi in the hotel, yeah?
