Title: New York gets it right!
Post by: PIE-GUY on June 24, 2011, 11:35:33 PM
The same-sex marriage bill was approved on a 33-to-29 vote, as 4 Republican state senators joined 29 Democrats in voting for the bill.

It's about time more states started to act.  Really happy this went through.

It's the Log Cabins. (gay republicans)

Great progress (although to those of us with any intelligence it's simple common sense). One of the final frontiers of human rights.

It IS common sense, isn't it? Kind of sad, as an indication of where our society is, that there's people that don't feel that way, I guess. Then again, women in Saudi Arabia just last week started driving cars in protest of a longstanding ban that required them to be accompanied by a male driver/guardian. So, guess we're not doing too bad on the progress here.

Last week, Rachel Maddow interviewed the former, and current, mayor of New Paltz, NY. This is the guy who used his power as mayor to officiate wedding ceremonies, as a sort of civil disobedience, before NY allowed gay marriage.

She asked him if he would do it again if the vote failed -- he answered it wouldn't be necessary. Long story short, I guess the votes had been there for a couple days. The trick was to round up enough "extra" Republicans that there wouldn't just be one guy taking all the heat as the Republican that "screwed" the party. In other words, the delay was all about getting enough political cover for the handful of GOP legislators who wanted to vote for the bill.

Not exactly a "profiles in courage" moment. But I guess all's well that ends well. And in the end, they did do the right thing, even if they were quintessential politicians about it, right to the end.

Pretty funny, actually. The comments section has been taken over by hug-wielding gay rights advocates. Typical response to Fox fans' bigotry:

"You sound really sad on the inside. Are you OK? Hang in there. You may think that this is the end of the world, but it probably isn't. Hugs being sent your way just in case it is the end of the world."
