i've yet to check out the 11/22/95 Free that's sitting
on my harddrive......but I realized that my grasp of
the best Frees was totally lacking...........i'm a huge
fan of the '95 style Frees w/ that trippy, whole-tone jam
in the middle, and I love the 7/15/98 version, as well as
the 6/26/04 version, but i know i'm missing THE versions -
any help would be appreciated..............
and that's it for topics for me today.......
nope you got THE version: 7/15/98 hands down the best version IMO
7/31/98 aint bad either, but nowhere near the portland version
also 6/30/99 is pretty good too.
11/22/95
that was the first rippingly experimental Free and I still love it.
Being on the floor on Page side didn't hurt.
I realize it's a monster version, so i've been putting it off
(11/22/95) until i get some time free from my kids and my
g/f..........is it experimental w/ a lot of groove, or is it experimental
w/ lots of weird stop/start stuff?
funk - yeah, the 7/15/98 rages - love it!!
wasn't there some great version from '97? none really come to mind,
but i thought i'd read about a '97 free that was raging.........but i've heard
all the '97s and again, none come to mind..............
Rock Groove. Remember this is 95, pre cow-funk. but it doesn't stray as wildly as a tweezer might.
It's excellent.
Put the kids to bed, send the g/f out with the girls, fire up the vape, sit back and put on the headphones.
sounds good man - looking forward to it.
i second the 7-15-98 version as well. I only wish they had brought it back around to the vocal ending. I actually perfer the alpine free (6-26-04) over any other version, but there are so many good ones.
i'd go as far as to say that 6/26 set 2, is nearly perfect, and truly
one of my top-5 favorite sets they've ever played.......sure it was
being there and sure it was my last show, but at the same time, the
set was amazing.........i just wish they'd have passed on Hood and Friday -
there was really no need for either of those songs to be played......they
could've wrapped up the set w/ possum and then encored w/ something like
frankenstein, but now i'm just being picky - amazing set w/ the amazing
boogieon>ghost->free, piper, possum.........what a way to say goodbye:)

not a fan of hood?
i always liked the 96 free.with trey on drums.those were all crazy.and the msg version was always one of my favorites.aug.
I was at Landover for the Thanksgiving Free. Way over the top, definatly a hose-down.
The one from Rosemont Horizon on Halloween 95 was pretty cool, too. The were just starting to experiment with the song at that point, but it was my first indoor Free and the lights were fantastic. I remember being pschyed at the time, because I thought that if this was the direction the band was going in, we were all in for a treat. And they didn't dissapoint, the next several years were very experimental. No song of theirs was safe from being tweaked in the right direction to scramble all our collective brains! :)
oh no man - i LOVE hood, but trey botched it HARDCORE during the riffy part
prior to the last "thank you mr. miner" - it just sucked bad......he was like a full
step off of the composed part and then he tried to bend up to make it sound correct
and it just sounded like a horse getting tortured......which, i guess, is art in itself:)
the rest of the set (sorry, friday not withstanding - in between a raging free and a
sick piper - WTF????) was flawless, IMHO - the messy Hood dragged it down a hair, but not
much........
that beast from 11-22-95 was my first show... very memorable.
40 minutes or so then straight into llama.
i think i was in such a daze after the boogie>ghost>free and the piper that i missed the botched hood intro... The one from alpine 03 was much, much better.
11/22/95
12/30/95
6/26/95 SPAC DWD>Free
11/30/97 Stash>Free>jam
8/16/96 Clifford ball
16May1995 is unmatched.
the 1st one? hmmm......not sure i can 2nd that, but it is
a great version.........
