I'm very curious if it would still be one of the 99 albums....

You would think they seriously considered a few of those albums last year.

Yanni put out a rather progressive album a few years back, at Telluride, mid set n1s2, page whispered it to me in the crowd. Many could not hear as they did not have the Ophishal Phish Whisperererer decoder earpiece on. In fact I think I was the only one who was properly prepared for the message

If they attempted Genesis vocals on live TV, they will have no qualms subjecting their fans to some serious squelchin'.

I'm definitely feeling it'll be a Zepp album, as for Physical Graffiti I'm not sure. I'm thinking Houses Of The Holy.

I just got a mental image of meeting Trey and pulling a big "SPARKS" sign out a backpack, and then him laughing and agreeing to play it at the next show.

Do not understand
Row Jimmy's use of haiku
but I'll follow suit.

It was a good time

could swing this, perhaps.

Hoping for some rawk,
Zeppelin would be very good,
not Bryan Adams.

my money has been on a zeppelin album ever since they did the rover in camden1, letter to jimmy page in camden2, then GTBT at mpp1

they are thinkin about it
Or they have just been the kings  of huge old-skool bust outs and odd covers all tour. GTBT has been on the list a while.

I believe GTBT is like their third most covered song of all time.
Yeah I was pretty sure it was up there, just didn't have the stats right at hand. Hicks fts as usual.

yeah i know that one is covered a lot, it was just all of that in a 3 day period struck me as interesting

pretty sure we notice and obsess about things that don't even cross the band's radar and vice versa

Yeah I kinda hope it isn't Physical Graffiti.

Don't get me wrong I love Zeppelin as much as the next guy and Exile was killer last year, but it was kind of a safe choice.

It would be cool if they chose something a little more out of the box this time, in the vein of Loaded.

Physical Graffiti seems like kind of an unlikely choice to me, mainly for the reason that the album wasn't one cohesive piece of work, but rather was a mix of new tunes and outtakes.  I don't think the album as a whole has the cohesion, or influence for that matter, to be on the list.

I think you could label every Zep album, with the possible exception of In Through the Out Door, as influential.

Howzabout My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

Trey has praised this outfit before, am I right?

I think. Zappa would be a great choice. Bowie is very Meh in my opinion. And Loveless would just be amazing. I feel as though with loveless it would really suck big time or be absolutely be out of this world good. Pavement would be cool. But what Pavement album would they do? Brighten on the Corners? Slanted and Enchanted would be intresting to see them do.

yeah, in fact, id think the opposite.  seems like halloween shows fit in w/ the overall identity of 3.0.  these guys love playing covers lately.

Re: Loveless, apparently we've trod this ground before.

This article (http://www.jimdero.com/News2001/GreatDec2MBV.htm) supposedly was published in the Chicago Sun-Times in late 2001.

QuoteTrey Anastasio pushed hard for Phish to cover it during one of that band's special Halloween shows. "'Loveless' is the best album recorded in the '90s," Anastasio said. "History will tell, and 20 years from now that album will be considered a complete classic, while a lot of the albums that are real popular today will have been forgotten."

Hendrix, Zepp or Bowie (Ziggy) would be the tits.

Just had a thought... and don't throw Internet stones at me... but Springsteen's Nebraska has the most fitting lyrical line I can think of... "Meet me tonight in Atlantic City." I hope to everything that this is not the case... but that line is now stuck in my head.

That record rules, but it's too slow. If we are getting Boss'd, I would definitely pick "Born to Run", but IF they take that route, I think we could get a cover of "Atlantic City" as well. I'm not thinking it will be the Boss though..

after the massive elimination contest last year, I don't think they're gonna give any hints this year.  Odds are, it will be another classic album vs a "Remain in Light" that points in a new Phish direction.  I'm not going, so I don't have much of a stake in it.  Since they're not doing 10/30 @ Deer Creek w/ ICP, obligatory Great Milenko costume.

that would work well (much better than a costume)... they've been playing pretty mellow tunes for pre-show, setbreak and walkout.

I'm going way out on a limb here and calling Joe's Garage. I would lose my shit.  :rockout:

iirc, they didn't do Joe's Garage in '95 for multiple reasons:
1. Zappa at one point had said some of those songs could not be played live (may also be legal reasons for royalties, his wife is kind of a bitch).
2. They started to learn the songs but gave up because they were too difficult and they weren't going to be able to reproduce them well enough live.

But, this doesn't mean they can't now, but in '95 they were so on top of their game that if they couldn't do it then they probably can't do it now.  Although it would be sweet.

i still think that they will do a zep album

def. not Michael Jackson nor Bruce Springsteen.

And what MR. Minor said about Zappa is true, they chose not to do it in 95 because of legal reasons and the technicality of the music could not be copied to the level of the band, so they went with the 2nd choice from the radio contest they held to determine what album.

is it safe to say that it wont be Exile on Main Street

True, they can play whatever they want live, but upon release they have to pay royalties.  And apparently Zappa's wife has beef with Phish about Peaches and thinks they should pay royalties for playing it.  That would make a Zappa album even more of a pain as it would cause problems between them and the Zappa camp with regards to royalties.  So maybe it's just not worth the trouble is all I am saying.

However, they were also supposed to 'never play Peaches again' due to Zappa's wife. And you see how that didn't last.

I am not a lawyer, but I believe that technically the venue pays the royalties to the songwriter.

And the estate of Frank Zappa, to my knowledge, has no problem with Phish - the request is that everyone stop playing Frank's material.

Title: Re: Halloween 2010

i believe thats correct - for a concert performance, the venue pays the royalties

i think the disconnect here is that some people are talking about venue royalties for live performance vs. royalties for releasing the tracks on livephish releases, which the band would then be responsible for.

still, gail zappa cant forbid anyone from playing franks songs, recording them, and releasing them. even the ones he said would or could never be played live, as long as she gets a check from phish, all she can do is bitch and moan but shes got no legal recourse against anyone who plays by the rules.

i think her bigger issue is w/ bar and club bands that arent part of the unions and associations and dont play by the rules like the bigger venues that are part of the establishment.

- spends $800 for my g/f and i go get in 30-31st - - drinks too much rum to ease the pain and blacks out - - wakes up to an email saying your tickets are on the way that i don't remember buying-

now i can be excited  :-D

funny because I read $800 as a pretty good deal for 4 tickets (at least as of today) if it included fees and shipping.

i'd say you'd be pretty hard pressed to get in under $800 right now for that order.

yeah you are right it'd be like 160+160+250+250+fees on the low end so probably more like 1000 all set and done

I once did some drunken late night surfing and by the time I sobered up, I was laying on a beach in Puerto Rico.

i'm not so sure i would say i'd be pissed or dissapointed.

the album costume is obviously a great tradition.
but phish both creating AND breaking traditions is cool in my book.

besides think about what they could do if it was the jukebox theme.
could be cool..

this wont b their last halloween show.
& if it works maybe they jukebox every couple years & then you get lucky in 3 years when you catch the 1st album costume back.

By Phish NYE and Halloween standards, they were both below par.

But if you weren't at Festival 8, you missed things that will probably never happen again - first west coast festival, first Halloween festival, "The Coil", acoustic set, Sierra Nevada "Foam", donuts...

For me, Miami NYE... been there/done that.

My thoughts on NYE is that I am gonna be there but missing last halloween was okay being all the way on the west coast and me not having funds for tickets. but not it looks I'm gonna spend just as much on AC but hey  :phish: first 3.0 halloween on the east coast, casinos, me and my girls anniversary, tour closer, and it being halloween...looks like i'm in.

when youve seen 100+ shows over 15 years (at the time), and you get to go to a festival chock full of "firsts," i dunno, felt pretty special at the time.

i'm not gonna argue that it wasn't unbelievably special for you guys, i'm sure it was.
but because when this got swayed into 10/31 vs 12/31, maybe i just meant wasn't as special (to me as nye is).

Again, Festival 8 was a unique experience... Miami was just another New Years run.

It has nothing to do with whether I was there or not... would you rather have done Deer Creek '96 or The Clifford Ball?

I'm totally agreeing with Mattstick on this, Fest. 8 wasn't just a Halloween run, it was a festival and a very beautiful one at that!! I loved Fest. 8 and think that year I would have chosen it over New Years... But with that being said, New years run are great and always will be, so if you start adding and subtracting other factors of why you made the decision to do New Years over 8 than I don't really think you made a bad decision... But Fest. 8 ranks just as high as a New Years run, thats for sure as far as I am concerned...

It has nothing to do with whether I was there or not... would you rather have done Deer Creek '96 or The Clifford Ball?

I had more fun at Deer Creek '96 than the Clifford Ball. However, Deer Creek is sort of like a festi if you camp in the corn fields.....and back then there were still a lot of them.

I haven't been to Deer Creek in a while, are you saying Deer Creek is more like Commercial Creek now a days??

I was there in '03, but from I've heard, it is quite different.

I haven't been back since '00.

There is all sorts of shit around DC these days. It still has some cornfields, but not as many.

RUSH anyone? Thoughts?

There was a long interview with John K (Fake Jerry) where he talked a lot about how he got into music, etc. and he talked about his early addiction to Rush. Let's just say i can relate. My huge Rush geekness really led to my full-on addiction to Phish.

That said, I think his reasoning for moving on from Rush is exactly why Phish will never play a Rush cover for real. He basically said that while they are all virtuoso musicians, he stopped listening to them once he discovered "groove oriented" music. Rush is a great band and i love prog in general, but they do not groove in any way. Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd - all prog rockers, but all have some level of groove. Rush does not.

Yeah, when you do the math that way it's a great deal.

All other shows = 2 sets for $60 = $30 a set

NYE = 3 sets for $70 = $23.34 a set

I've gotta believe that the overtime on NYE in NYC is pretty expensive. NYE has always been a higher ticket price.

That said, I have been a touch nervous about the lack of announcement regarding Halloween. If it ends up being a 2 set "normal show" I will be disappointed.

I'm not as into the costume as a lot of folks are. Don't get me wrong, I think it's really cool (and will def enjoy every second of it). I just don't care about it as much as a lot of people do. It's gonna be a party either way...

some people apparently really do think that theyre going to switch it up somehow this year, and the jukebox set is the obvious first choice but that just seems so lame compared to picking another great conceptual album to cover front to back.

i dont really want them to do anything but the cover set, but i suppose that some of the chatter has opened my eyes to the possibility that they could do something new this year.

we'll find out w/in minutes of doors opening on 10/31, thats for sure.  thanks, twitter.

i've been thinking about this too.
i mean 3.0 is obviously still trying to mix things up:
venues, 1/1/11, other stuff i cant think of right now, etc...

if each band member picked 3 or 4 SIIIIICK covers that we all love, they love, & they've never played,
it would be an exciting & fresh idea.
could it fail? i guess. but so could certain albums in the eye of the beholder.

maybe they're over covering albums (for now)
and want to explore new options. or simply cant decide which album to do??
if there was an underlying theme, i think it could be one of the boldest & dopest things they've done.
if it works, that is.

I hate the jukebox idea... If it's not an album cover, than it better be a Halloween themed narrated Gamehenge... or some other off the top idea that can legitimately be debated about topping a musical costume like Mattstick said... I'm really thinking it will be an Album, but this is the best poker face off I've witnessed coming from the band about whats up...

What if the 'Jukebox Theme' and the 'Album Costume' could be the same thing? A soundtrack could count as both. As I drunkenly posted before last years Halloween show, I'd love to hear them do the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack, or how about  the Pulp Fiction soundtrack?  There were at least 3 soundtracks on the wall last year, they could be considering it.

Sure the second two are single artist soundtracks, but they're still soundtracks. And iterestingly all 3 are in the top 10 soundtracks of all time as rated by AMC.

It's not that I don't like those soundtracks, just don't think I want to hear Phish play any of those... I just feel that none of those fall into Phish's forte`... Don't want to hear Phish try and pull off Curtis Mayfield's or Isaac Hayes's vocal lines for an entire set... To many songs on that Prince album fall into the geigh category, and as much as I thing Saturday Night Live might be a dance party, I really just don't want to hear the Bee Gees either...

The more I think about this, the more I'm starting to think that I am going to be disappointed... already feeling like a party pooper...

True!
Never liked Loaded or Exile before they played them and now they are my faves.
I will say that Physical Graffiti is one of my least favorite Zep records, tho.

it would be weird to attempt a narrated story for a halloween  / phish holiday crowd that was there to rage...

i dont buy it yet, but i do think that they are doing a good job of keeping us in suspended anticipation w. the gamehendge nods, the ambiguous language on the website, and the lack of any rumors about albums or guest players.
