It's weird that they relearned difficult songs like Guelah and It's Ice for Hampton and then left them on the shelf.

what about some of the best Round Room songs which could all be awesome if they played them solidly.
maybe we'll see them in August...

Totally, the good Round Room songs deserve attention.

I was stoked that they played Waves twice, but they should have given Seven Below more than just one shot and of course Pebbles and Marbles is long overdue.  A WOTC at this point would be cool to hear too.

I'm glad to see Friday hasn't made it back though and Mexican Cousin and All of These Dreams have been limited to one timers.

Pretty good show. For the shows I've seen them I'd rank this in the middle, behind yesterday, but ahead of Sunday Hampton. Frankenstein was pretty sweet.

Hey guys luckily got out of the lost fast tonight after last nights three hour fiasco, Just got back to the hotel and had to say a few words.  2nd set is the best set I have seen in a very long time.  I was at the creek on friday and that 2nd set doesn't hold a candle to this one.  The whole set flowed so well.  The CP, DWD, bug were great.  All I have to say is PIPER is where its at epic version may be in contention for the jam of the tour maybe not the best but real close.  Awesome time the last three days I forgot how much fun it is to be on the road  with is band.  I plan on writing up a review of all three after I get home tomm.  The first set is up and down but I won't even remember it after that 2nd set. Take care

sitting at the airport waiting for 6am flight. what a wonderful weekend is been!

set two tonight was mad spacey and terrifying.  not very dancey, more stand and watch, which was great for me.  well crosseyed > dwd was dancey.  brother opener with all the kids was great! great piper, some good segues.  I think they were going to segue out of velvet sea but maybe things got messy so they ended it.

av is a kick ass venue.  if you don't want to deal with horrible traffic just park in the green lot, we were out in less then 5 minutes both nights.  the staff was great, very professional.  the cops were all very nice to me and my friends.

if anyone got an extra Sunday pollock I want to pay you a sum of monies for it.  yeeeeargh me matey, gather your belongings and proceed to the cinnabon

mandi/jedifunk -

cellphone crapped out at about 545pm - totally forgot to charge it - looked for you on page's side and at the cigar bar, to no avail!   my bad - we stayed back at the lot too long and it just wasn't meant to be.

i'm not sure i've heard as complete a show as tonight's in i don't know how long.......95% of the material was NAILED.......and not just nailed as much as just played with intensity........the 2nd set's C&P>DWD was mind-blowing - plain and simple.     the piper was disgusting as well.........the gin from last night was superb and fuck - the whole weekend has fully restored my faith........trey nailed the intro to YEM last night (save for the last few notes towards the end) and played soaringly in waves and geez..........i just finished 6 hours back to stl from alpine and am seeing like three screens right now........

i knew the alpine shows would be great once we saw the energy at the fox, but i'm not sure i've left this happy from a phish show since 1997.

there........i said it - they're back..........they're good.    they're fucking great.

go see them.........they play rock and stuff...........and the jams tonight were scary but dancey as hell too in spots........regardless - i heard some '94 chromaticism, so '95-ish majesty (both nights) and all in all - couldn't be more pleased in 2009.

sleep well.......or, have a good day.

:)

REDEMPTION!!!!!

Also, it takes some ballls to close out a 2nd set of the last show of the tour with Slave after Trey butchered it at the Fox.  I'm impressed!!!

Can't wait to hear it.
This show looks like a nice way to end tour. If what I've been hearing from Deer Creek and 1st night Alpine are any indication, they were on a roll coming into last night's show and it may well have been THE show of tour.

I usually don't pay too close attention to the Horse, but doesn't it seem like Trey just rushed though it to get to Silent in the Morning?  He skipped over some parts and just breezed through it, I thought.

wow, what a great weekend!  sorry that I didn't get to meet up with you guys yesterday,  the day took me a completely different direction and I had no choice but to follow.  but man, what a great show.  I got the TMWSIY bustout that I was desperately hoping for but didn't think was likely enough to even mention to anyone!  I was a bit dissapointed when what I thought was going to be Camel Walk turned out to be Bug, though.

I was on my way out the door during the encore (my buddy had to work in Carbondale at ten this morning), but I looked back and thought that Rick Nielson was on stage!  I mean c'mon, trey can't let Page have his moment with the keytar, he has to bust out a five necked guitar and only play one neck?  jeesh.

that Wolfman's was fricking awesome, too!

Wow ok im done.  This is up there fo sho for this leg at least imo.

Brother-bustout,bathtub,band fam,and it wasn't bad either
Wolfmans-I always love a wolfmans and then coming after a bro song i thought was a cool tough.
Funky Bitch-Awesome, its about time.
Divided Sky- solid as always
Joy-Not bad i think it might be starting to grow on me. a good 1st set dance break.
GBOTT-Nice and a little funky just how i like em.
Taste-Personal fav of mine i always like heraing it,played really well.
Poor Heart-the best of the phish ho-downs imo always good
The Horse-Good tune, didn't screw it up  :-)
Silent in The Morning-Ditto like above, didn't screw it up=good
TMWSIY-WOW how refreshing is this to hear
Avenu-WOW again nice and tight the way i like it.
TMWSIY-WOW again
TTE-someone said it in an earlier post and i agree keep this in set one. Still just can't get past those lyrics though.
C&P-NICE, this was a little slower than i was expecting but i love this song played that way.  Real talking heads style jam out of it as well
DWD-I loved it i thought it was really tight when it got to the meat of it.
Bug-Good song, good version.
Piper-wow, i just heard this at pburgh but this kicked that version in the dust.  Some of my fav improv of the summer towards the end of it.
Wading-look at bug
Boogie-Got nice and funky with mikes dirty bubble plops :-D
Slave-Bring on the redemtion slave  :beers: nice stuff here real nice

I'm kinda glad this tour is over because I don't have the stamina to keep doing this every 4 out of five days.

This show is the cream of '09. elsewhere in the tour is comparable and possibly better improv but this show has all of the positive elements of Phish 3.0.

Brother - Sweet bustout. Well played but cautiously brief. Cool. bonus for attendees what with the tub & kids onstage...

Wolfman's Bro - It's family style Phish!. This one is fairly standard for this tour. Nothing bad, nothing crazy.

Funky Bitch - Phish takes requests! Very cool to see them bring this back. Mike misses one vocal cue; BFD. They keep this short like Brother. Glad to hear it at all.

Divided Sky - Better than the Pitt Sky. Nicely done.

Joy - I love this song. as I said after Camden, don't play it every night and I'll continue to love it.

GBOTT - Short & sweet

Taste - They're really packing in the tunage with these un-extended numbers. Honestly, I may have been out of the room when this came on.

Poor Heart - tight & quick. kinda like my first time

Horse > silent - ahhh... I really like these. Trey has been really hitting his outro solo on Silent.

TMWSIY > Avenu > TMWSIY - !!?!?! This came out of nowhere and is really well done (only listened twice...)

TTE - Gotchya!

C&P - sick sick good jamming but not much of a segue

> DWD - further sickness

Bug - ahh a breather

Piper - ahh a ripper! This is the best of the year. That may not be saying much considering some of the clunkers we've heard but this one is a full, proper version.

Velvet Sea - we actually need another breather after than Piper. Besides, we still have

Boogie On - is a proper old-school funk groove. love it.

Slave - Redemption version? sure. It's def. better than St. Louis. Not mind blowing but average performance of an awesome song. hard to knock that.

Grind is cutesy.

Frankenstein is nasty. in a hilarious way. also nice redemption for knoxville

Anyone know what the guy was holding up that prompted the Funky Bitch?  I'm assuming it was something more than just a request sign.
just a sign, one side said Sneaking Sally the other Phunky Bitch.

Now for my review.  Alpine Night 1 was Fantastic several highlights for me include,  The opening 5 songs.  They came out throwing Punches!! PYITE followed by Runaway Jim were good to get things rolling for STASH!!!  Ya Mar and Bathtub were great to hear too,  The only downer to the first 5 was a part in Runaway where they had the crowd charged with energy about to lift-off and Trey decided to try to keep the tension building rather than let out some of those soaring notes, it kinda buckled and went flat. Farmhouse was a piss song for me so I missed sparkle entirely but Antelope, standard as it was was great to hear.
Second set started out ok, but didn't really get going for me until MAZE!!  Ghost>Lizards was sweet and then they go off the hook with YEM>NICU>Prince Caspian>Waste>Fire. WoWoWoWoWoW.

Alpine night 2 I thought might be the better of the 2 nights due too a lot of people were gonna skip it because they had to work.  Brother opener sealed it.  Glad my pavilion seat was for Sunday.  Many special little thanks on this day. The kids in the tub for Brother, The 4 Bust-outs (Brother, Funky Bitch, TMWSIY , and Crosseyed and Painless).  Yeah the Crosseye and Painless>DWD was very nice. They were jamming old school for a while there. Love the Encore but kinda had to be there for the special instruments.

The more I hear Phish 3.0 the better.  They very much remind me of the guys I saw in the later 90's.
Fun, Energetic shows.  The jams will only get better from here.

Camden runner up?

dude with the phunky bitch sign was a buddy of mine.

as for the shows... 2nd set, 2nd night was the HEET!  for real.  this was the real phish.  still though... my analogy for the weekend.. and for phish 3.0 so far.

seems to me that they now know how to turn the "faucet" on again... gin & ghost ruled night one... but it seems like once the faucet is on, they start to panic as the jams just start FLOWING out of the faucet, and it starts to flood the place...

in their panic, they rush to turn off the faucet, instead of just turning it down.  again ghost is a great example... shit was DEEP, and then all of a sudden, it was over.

also, it seemed like the first night was kinda all over the place. 2nd set started out like a first set... and never really got "there"

however, they put it all together for the 2nd set 2nd night... HOT LOTS!  the jams were still short but the flow was AMAZING, and the energy was off the charts.

basically, i'm now totally AMPED for red rocks!  shit is ON NOW!

Definitely one of my favorite shows so far. With some of my favorite songs.
What a way to end the first part of tour. I can't wait for part 2.
I have never been to Colorado or Washington State. So this is only adding to the excitement for me. Along with tying the knot. (Sorry Aug)  :|

See ya all at Red Rocks!!!!

At the end of the song he strummed, fedback on all 5 necks frets.  So he did in fact play more than one neck, chaoctically but not precisely.

Last night was definitely on the upper tier with Camden, Asheville, Camden, second night Jones Beach and Fenway,

I gotta say this Piper was the peak of the tour. The last five minutes broke down into the kind of Phish I remember.

I've listened to all of the shows, and I honestly think that the last four shows were better than any on the tour. Camden was good, but it didn't have any real highlights for me. I have to give it another listen.

I thought both nights were fantastic!! This being my first set of shows that I've seen in 5 years it was just a blast... I thought the first night was a little bit of a hotter show, they just started out with such a head of steam with PYITE, R.J., Stash, B.G. and the even Kill devil falls was a rocker!! I was just floored by Trey's command, Maze was incredible, He was on FIRE!!!, which was a great version at end the end... And the second night I thought was really good too... Loved the beginning with the two Brothers and the second set kicked ass!! Nice C & P and yes definitely a fat funky Piper!!, and a beautiful Slave... but after reading through some of the posts, I feel in the minority by thinking the first night was the better of the two... but either way, just a great weekend of music... Can't wait until the Gorge...

Both nights were great, but I really have to go back to compare.  I felt like I enjoyed first night more, but there was so much intensity in set 2 of night 2.  Maybe I felt set1 was all composition and no improv and second set was forced lengthy jams that in all cases took off and did eventually become something...  However, just as they do, the flow is stopped instead of harnessed.  jedi's point is right on.  Night 1 seemed to have more for me, but with the reviews here, I'll have to take another listen.  Maybe I was just really happy.

Wow...I'm back home and rested after an AMAZING weekend at alpine valley...

In my opinion after seeing only Jones Beach and Alpine, the Alpine shows were burning hot, fantastic, best of the tour!!  Not to put down JB at all, but they were on fire by the end of the tour.

We also had front row seats both nights, night 1 Pageside, night 2 Fishmanside.

A little note about Crosseyed and Painless.  When they came out for the 2nd set, Trey walked over to our side of the crowd and was looking at something.  I turned around to see a sign that says "It's my 30th Birthday, Song request Crosseyed & Painless".  He then went over and asked Mike and Fish and it was on!!

I'm not sure what else to say that hasn't been said already...the Piper jam in set 2 was very reminiscent of '04 Piper jams but soberer and shredderer.  F-in' rad!  To top if off I'm pretty sure Trey was responding to my huge grin at 2 thumbs up walking of stage after set 2 when he nodded and said 'thanks.'

Oh, one more thing I noticed...the 3 closing songs: Slave, Grind and Frankenstein...all 3 were botched the last time they played them, and I'm convinced they wanted to finish them right at the end of tour, which they did.  Fishman tore up that Slave.  Phish was all huge grins all night long.  Can't wait for the Gorge!!!

PS- the Makisupa keywords the first night "Woke up this morning, pissed in jah cup, Woke up this afternoon, called my probation officer."  That shit was hilariously awesome.

ok, so as its bound to happen from time to time... after listening to the 2nd set of sunday, i think i was a bit caught up in the moment.

it was a good set, but not the set i remembered being at when it happened on sunday.

the crosseyed in particular was a bit uninspired in the listen i just had... the dwd & piper however still delivered the goods.

i still think this was a great show, just not as crazy amazing as originally thought.

Anyone know what the guy was holding up that prompted the Funky Bitch?  I'm assuming it was something more than just a request sign.
just a sign, one side said Sneaking Sally the other Phunky Bitch.

Remember when the sign went up and out of the pavilion like that and on up the lawn?

That was awesome.

Had such a good time at Alpine, I didn't want it to end, and I didn't want to leave! Everyone pretty much spoke for the good songs/jams, but I was REALLY impressed with the funky ass Boogie!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't stop dancing the funk was just way too deep!

So after my first taste of phish Im pretty much speechless. Couldnt have asked for anything better. I thought the boys were on both nights and Trey really shined first night, doing things I didnt know were possible!

Funny story about the Frankenstein. I didnt even realize Trey was playing the 5 neck guitar, I saw it on the Jumbo tron, but.... wasnt sure if it was just the lsd, or if it was a bad camera angle, or what. But I did get a real good kick out of that.

All I can say is WOW.  :-o   and I cannot WAIT for darien/SPAC!

I agree that the only place it belongs is in the 1st set, preferably as the closer...however...the only reason i enjoyed it was because of how awful the song itself is...kind of like an ironic anti-enjoyment-enjoyment.

I really really really don't think I will ever like the middle sections of this song.

Please let this be the last year for this song.

Well I like Joy and Let me Lie.....but i am gonna talk about the the show, which IMO was the best show from start to finish of the tour. The second being camden. The best second set being deer creek. The Brother, wolfman's Brother, funky bitch, divided sky was the perfect way to start the show. A rare fun song like brother, then the fun play on words of wolfmans next..wow the funky bitch request grant was one of the PHUNKIEST funky bitches ever, with page taking over from the get go. I cried like a baby (for the second time of the weekend) during SKY. It just overwhelmed me with joy. The TMWSIY> avenu malkenu> TMWSIY was a rare treat. i thought they would end the set there, then they busted into TTE (which belongs in the first set IMO) which worked great to end the set.

Before i talk about the second set, let me explain the tattoo i got during the breakup. It goes all the way across my back and says
                                                  :phish:STILL WAITING :phish:

So the whole tour I have been WAITING for a C and P. Plus I called it as the second set opener for this show in particular. so you can imagine my joy when they played it exactly as i pictured. The Alpine jam that came out of it, was just OK as it got a little spacey, but what was to follow was what made this show special. The DWD> Bug> Piper was splended. The disease was very similar to the Hampton space weave one. It was very interesting. The bug was kind of long for a bug and a great breather. Now once they segued into Piper i didnt know whether they would jam it or if it would be just another song like it was the 2 or 3 times they played it this tour. It was the most experimental jam of the tour. It is also in my top three pipers. Trey ruled the whole jam. There was this falling stop theme in the jam that Trey kept bringing back. Just listen to it. you will understand what i mean. WOW. this set is really tight. even the velvet sea had a good solo from Trey. The Reggae woman was a nice way to keep the crowd rockin. The slave was just an exclamation point on a good show.   :phish:

Night one definitely had some nice segues into songs.  Pretty good set list with some big hitters.  I gotta admit Sundays bust outs kinda seal it as the best show of the tour for me.  listened to everything but PA and DC and I'll have to compare them.  They were both great shows but Ive never seen Brother before and with the tub!!! Shit.  Otherwise I had seen all the other songs before and thought it was great to see them again.

Same thing with Joy (even though I like that gay ass song.)

Funny you say that, cuz I feel the same way.

Sometimes I even feel stupid for liking its lameness  :-P

it's just something about the corny lyrics that i like, and i mean it's not reallly all that bad of a tune.

JOY??? Pass over what you guys are smoking.

Some of us are not made of stone.
:-P

QuoteLyrically, much of Joy draws from Anastasio's struggles with drugs and his return from a 2006 arrest for possession. The album's title track was written when Anastasio's sister was fighting cancer earlier this year (she died in April)

Yeah, I read that part of the article a few minutes after posting that and felt kinda bad about hating on it (unfortunately, proving I am not made of stone )....but still, my least favorite of the new ones.

i think Joy is awesome.  I think it embodies the attitude Phish is trying to have towards their fans.  Taking requests from the audience? I mean how freaking awesome is that?  Since when does a band as big as Phish give a shit about a sign in the audience?

it helps if you put some of these new songs with all the words and thinly veiled messages in context.  makes them much easier to stomach and in some cases actually enjoyable.

Just a lil more hate for yall to digest....I just listened to it again....

The CE&P sucks BALLS....that's right....BALLS....BIG balls that don't even JAM....Way off tempo, very fumbling.....

The Piper.....while this Piper is decent enough, I'm going to invite a challenge....Listen to the Piper from Oswego with this one back to back.....pretty damn similar....too similar for my taste....Still, the theme in the jam is h337. The octave up riffing Trey does is the cats meow in my book....I love when he plays it that way, makes it VERY cartoonish....

Brother....while great to hear dusted off once again, Trey needs to practice some chops before attempting to play a song like this one again....playing full notes when there should be 1/4 or 1/8 notes....pure slop....

....and the silly thing is, you'll hear him pull off those faster runs in other songs....

I used to yell for more Mike at shows....I think my new cry will be "More practice please!"....

I agree with most of this. The CE&P is overrated. I liked the Piper a lot, but mostly because of the last five minutes. This DWD was my favorite from 3.0. I still liked the energy from this second set, and it's my favorite of the year.

How about we all forget about the great songs played in the past, and lets embrace what Phish is doing for all of us heads and thats getting back in touch with the music again, and getting back in touch with the old friends and then come august time. This is Phish 3.0!

But you said this about 99 in the other thread: Ok...'99 is better than most anything PH....it's still slop at times, but the jams, when they hit Nth gear.....damn did they take you to mars, drop you off and let ya roam around a bit before slammin your face back on the floor of the venue before all was said and done....

mhm...I did.

Let me clear it: '99 is ass. Very few PH shows live up to the bar of '99, there's a few that surpass it, but the majority dont. In '99 at least they could do that to you consistently.....once you listen to anything 2000-> it's all pretty much like 1999 pt.2, pt.3, and pt.4.....it just gets more and more stale, the jams cover pretty much the same territory each time, the same licks get repeated over and over and over.......you get where I'm goin here?

It's like 1999 was their "It's all downhill from here" year....

Well, it sounds like Phish has been disappointing you for an entire decade.  Maybe its time to move on? (http://www.umphreaks.com/bort/index.php)  Because personally, when Doritos got too extreme cheesy for my tastes, and therefore I stopped liking them, I just started eating salt and vinegar chips, rather then hanging around the store and talking to other chip enthusiasts about 1980's Doritos for ten years.

That makes complete sense, and I agree with you for the most part. I still think Phish peaked in '97, but as you said, '99 had a lot of moments that blasted you into another world. Whipping Post at Deer Creek was that moment for me.

EDIT: Let me modify that. Phish had a number of peaks and valley. '97, for me, was the highest peak, but '99 was another.

Nice, kickass analogy.  I appreciate critical opinions and understand that some of the older tourheads want back what they used to have but in the end, that probably isn't going to happen.  I only started in '97 and would love to get some of that back (maybe it will get there).  But I don't sit around ripping on a band that I can tell is trying their damndest to pull these great, intricate tunes off and then add some decent jams where they can.  I find it kind of funny that someone would tear them apart ad nauseum and in other threads, talk about which shows they plan on hitting up.  Makes no sense to me but I guess that is what Phish is now to some people, a whipping post.

The fanbase has always been really critical though, and I can see where mar is coming from, and to an extent I can agree.  I have posted a fair amount of criticism on this board, but at the end of the day, I'm still going because the outcome is in doubt, and I just don't know what Phish will do, and that possibility of greatness, of seeing pure magic is what brings me back.  The bulk of my shows are from Summer '03, and personally, that was laden with low points and high points for me, and those high points are what got me coming back and enduring the low points.  So I will bitch and moan, and it's not out of hate, or disrespect, it's out of wanting the band to fulfill the level of potential they have.

Whoa.  This Piper is sick.

True story, this kid that we saw at every show, "Winger", who is your stereotypical lot kid, was on the lawn after the show.  We got ultra-excited, because seeing winger for us is awesome, kind of like how it was awesome that we saw "17" at Burgettstown and at Deer Creek.  Anyways, "Winger" looks at us, and says "Hey dudes, what was your favorite part of the show, I'm taking a survey", and Art Vandelay says "I really liked the Crosseyed and also the Piper" and "Winger" looks at him and says in the weirdest brahed out heady voice ever "Oh yeah, the tweeky piper".

Needless to say, one of our favorite sayings right now is "Oh yeah, the tweeky piper" in his voice.

See Star Lake.
Add any Tweezer from this tour (10min!) replace the Encore with TweezRep and Character Zero. Replace "Circus" with Waste.

Play it every night and there you have it.

I guess I'm just coming from a place that is accepting of where Phish is at this time, and I'm just tickled to see a sober Trey and watch how much fun they seem to be having up on stage.  And I honestly don't believe they will ever achieve a greatness identical to Summer '96.  I believe there is greatness to come, but it will come in a much different fashion then the past.  So I think that by living in the past and constantly looking for the '96 mind melting rock or '97 grooves or even yes, the '00 textural and spatial explorations, we close ourselves off to experiencing something new.  Beyond even sobriety, which changes everything about a person's life, they are also older and (hopefully) have a bit more wisdom about living.  This is bound to continue to trickle down into their music in ways we can only guess at.

I truly am glad to see people who are critical of where Phish is at musically, as it encourages me to look at shows differently and keep an open mind.  But there is a point where criticism approaches whining, and I felt like you were riding that line in your posts.  Of course I could be wrong! but I took the opportunity to post a witty snack food metaphor anyhow.  And the link to the Umphrey's site was no joke.  If you want mind blowing improvisational musical perfection, look no further then UM.

This is like telling me if I want the best sex of my life to go troll a high school.

right on.  and I think most of us around here would rather take Phish, warts and all, above technical perfection. though to be fair I am starting to look at UM with a more open mind since enjoying their show at wanee. normally I'm not crazy about third generation and on jambands.

also I didn't mean for any of my posts to come off as a personal attack on Marmar.  I'm hoping our dialogue is all in good fun.

If wanted to hear music like that I'd put two boomboxes in a room with one playing Steve Vai and the other playing DMB simultaneously.  That would be better than UM.

fair enough, but I still feel a constant yearning for the Phish of yore blinds us to the possibilities of the present moment.  it's like trying to recapture the way you felt as a younger person at those early shows: that feeling will never be the same, because we are products of our life experience, we are older, we are different, and that's OK!  there will never be a moment exactly like the 1960s acid tests, there will never be a moment like the birth of hard bop before jazz slipped int the murky depths of fusion, and there will never be another MSG 95.  love the memory for what it is, and be content in the fact that true joy (no pun intended) exists in relishing the moment.

love y'all. :)

UM? finally saw a show of theirs on "soundstage"  it really went nowhere.  I wanted it to be good too, but it was really really bland.
Incredible musicians?  really?

I thought this was a post for the 6/21 show review... um, ok then: good show.  not '97 blah, blah, blah not '99 blah, blah, blah... no, this is 3.0 version; it's not going off the edge, but driving up to the south rim to show the kids what the edge looks like and sharing some knowing winks and nods and a few inside jokes.... good times them were.

1) brother (great reason to stay sober yet need a drink), wolfie is a good groove dood, bitch for everyone pining for it, 'sallright>sky gets proper 3.0 treatment, gbott keeps things rolling, taste is tasty (7/22/97 it ain't, but I like it),poor heart done up ditty, horse>silent is a nice flow as usual, tmwsiy>avenu>tmwsiy is a great nostalgic reprieve, tte is still not growing on me.  It almost has moments, but then... nope.

2) x-eyed is such a heavy slow jam here>dwd reaching similar but satisfying 3.0 territory here> bug; I forgot that I liked this song>piper; rather tweeky eh?>wading is not high on my list but we're coming down for a bit of a breather, Boogie On; full of Mike, Slave is sweet redemption for the Fox.

e:  grind: I'd like to catch one live (who said: "same song, different numbers"? indeed, sweet).  frank: why not have fishman on ole' tommy lee's rotating drum kit for the full rock-n-roll spinal tap extravaganza?

UM, really?  do any of their older shows where they pretty much just covered phish come across better?

What does the setlist of "Phish: Greatest Hits" tour look like? Obviously, it would have to stay the same for the whole tour, ala the eagles or something...

Look at the setlists to summer '98, and I think you will find your answer  :wtu:

21June2009 - E. Troy, WI

MBHO KA200N/MB603>Edirol R-44
10' Right of Center OTS, DIN @ 12'

I

Brother - a fav. for me, the 31Oct.96 is a smoker w/ Perazza, song exposes where Trey's fluidity is, certainly more of a challenge for Trey at this point.  Happy FDay ladies and gentlemen!

Wolfman's - enjoyed the 18June version, can they bring the "x" w/ this tune?, interesting how this has become a first set showcase esp. on this tour, solid Wolfman's linear jamming w/ everyone bringing their heat.

Funky Bitch - tight version.

Divided Sky - more of a repeat but I do like its aquatic expressions.

Joy - Phish 2009

Back on the Train - nice opening, this is Rolling Stones Phish, Mike solid as usual, great theme for 3.0, jam has a nice country/honky-tonk funk feel, cool to hear Trey switching it up giving Page a turn, Mike hitting some nice punchy descending runs, Trey funking out towards the end, solid version.

Taste - similar modality as Brother, great passing of the baton as Trey knifes in near 4:50, Trey morphs in/out of his sacred sea aesthetic, decent version.

Poor Heart - solid.

Horse > Silent - inspired reading into

TMWSIY > the transition is fun,

Avenu Malkenu - love this tune, Mike brings added flair >

TMWSIY

Time Turns Elastic - I like the frequency of how many times this was played this tour unlike other tunes, minor flub after Submarine then gets Pebbles and Marbles like into nice transition into "free from time" ebb and flow is Trey's fav lyric idea, again Trey using the Vermont autumn as a metaphor for his own transformation, memory expressing the darker days into upbeat Page liftoff > almost Stephen Stills-esque rythym parts around 6:30, Page giving the edges added vibrancy, my fav. part begins near 8:24 > nice build, Trey showing his compositional prowess, 10:18 is the Abbey Road/She Came in Through The Bathroom Window vibe > gear switch into outro verse, "in and out focus..." , 3 weeks after debut, band tries to turn time elastic > fairly linear jam, still a work in progress, Phish vamp.  Overall I do like this new song.

II

C & P - big throwdown, straight ahead jamming, high energy, jam loosens slightly, nice type I w/ Page and Trey way out in front, Trey reaching & good crescendo, his chops at their tour peak, jams gets etheral like a ship who has made it through a storm and sails foward, trippy Page towards the end, noodling space aliens, cool outro > DwD looming >

DwD - strong out of the gate, nice trills by Trey, jam maintains high energy early on, Trey searching for it, Trey morphs into a nice riff, jam morphs slightly, Trey hitting a lot of notes but not really directing or influencing the jam, jam descends into trippy play, blues/space feel, alien space morphs into muddy jam w/ cool Fish/Mike propelling underneath into

Bug - "overrated"

Piper - strong opening, strong rthymic Trey at outset, nice Page mixing it up, trippy vibe, Trey jamming at a high level completely in sync w/ everyone the spaceship has lifted off, more funk/rock chords into alternate lead, Mike laying a deep foundation underneath w/ Fish, very rapid tempo out of this, Trey howls, experimental Phish, free jamming, again nice pace underneath the entire time, heavy outro w/ stately Page into

Velvet - >

Boogie On - nice funk up in outro, similar to NICU

Slave - decent way to end the set.

E

Grind - a new fav. but perhaps overplayed.

Frankenstein - perhaps an early nod to 10/30 - 11/01?  solid show ender.

Overall another good Phish show, similar to 19June in its second set saw a few attempts of improvisation w/ fair success but they are trying.  In the first set I liked Train and Time Turns Elastic w/ the 3 big guns in set 2: C&P, DwD and Piper leading the improvisational way.  Specifically, I liked some of the spacier stuff towards the latter half of Painless and, the open free jamming in Piper.
As for the recording, I recommend it but I'm sure a better sounding source is out there.

well, finally getting to listen to this right now.
sounds VERY tight from the jump.
brother was a little shakey, but what do you expect.
Wolfmans had a nice build up... in fact if they continue to do these shorter versions i sorta like it as a first set rocker.
BItch=nice.
Divided sky is sounding the best i've heard yet=totally f-in awesome!

thats where i am now, and all i can think is--
POST BURGETTSTOWN 09 PHISH = ITs ON BITCHEZZ!!!

damn, sux these LP sbds are so Flat, but that aside this show is da h34t!!
little more '-UP' than deer creek i think... i'm gonna have to listen to every show at least twice b4 i can really pick my fav of the tour, but in the mean time i give AV2 a BIG thumbs up.
oh yeah, and that Piper might just be the Jam of the tour...

anyway, i'm now curious as to what i'll think of AV1, since i like the second nite and DC so much.

SBDs like "a live one" and "msg '95" are professionally mastered, a process which takes time (and money).

The AV shows are the first LP i've heard this tour, they do sound awful.  should have stuck with AUDs for this one.

edit: let me rephrase that.  they sound like I've expected really dry SBD's to sound, pretty much just like the WSP SBDs sound.  boring, and not neutral, but rather bassless.

Just a heads up..  there are lots of matrix recordings of the better shows (Jones3,Camden,DeerCreek,Alpine2) floating around that really fill in the thickness and round out the sound well.

PM me if you need help finding them..  :-)

These LP's are going to force me out of retirement....I can not stand how absolutely horrid they sound....you'd get more life recording them with string and a tin can....
damn that is harsh! But true, why not LPs like " a live one?"

I'm in the first set / disc now of that show... it is waaaaay better than any other UM I have heard.  Great sounding recording as well.  This one has all the nuances and subtleties that I was led to expect from these guys as well as some very sweet guitar work.  Thanks for turning me on to this show, I might push myself to find some more.   :beers:

If you're enjoying the 2004 UM be sure to also check out >>> http://www.archive.org/details/um2004-12-11.flac (http://www.archive.org/details/um2004-12-11.flac)

I'll second that recommendation.

I didn't read the first 14 pages of this thread so someone may have mentioned this before but there's a strong What's The Use jam in Taste. Almost enough that it could be labled 'Taste -> WTU -> Taste'.

...the reason those sound so sweet isn't because they are "professionally mastered". These newer releases are also "professionally mastered".....The difference lies in how they were recorded.....

These are 2 track stereo mixes (for the downloads at least).....I'd hope they are using the multi-tracks for the CD releases/Remasters....probably not, but there's always hope....

A Live One was multi-tracked from the get go.....which means the recorded mix was mixed entirely seperate from the In-House mix....There are some others from 90, 91 and 92....The multi-tracked shows will always sound better because the mix is specific for the recording, not just the FOH feed slightly adjusted to 2 tracks....

aren't most of the Dick's Picks series 2 track stereo mixes? and they sound a hell of a lot better then the Phish LPs.

edit: having said that, the multi-track Dead releases sound even better, but to what do we attribute the superior sound of good old GD stereo mixes?

Better FOH engineers.

Healy or Owsley = Audio GODS.....you do understand we wouldn't have concert sound if it wasn't for these two.....

For a perfect example, check out a GOOD copy of a SBD from the Bears Choice run.....Owsley made the best "old school" recordings....constructive leakage was pioneered by him. Also, the gadgets being used today tend to lead to that "sterile" recorded sound...

Ever notice the best AUD recordings are the ones with the least amount of gear usually?

Z man's pull from Deer Creek is good too - a little weak on the bass but it has plenty of depth in general. I'm gonna listen to his AV stuff next.

relistened to my previous highlights from before, this time around only the Crosseyed and Painless really stood out whereas the DwD and Piper were meh.

I thought the DwD was amazingly awesome to start off with, and then meandered into horrible wank territory never to return.

The opening was HOT HOT HOT.

just finished this one, heard set 2 twice.
I would have been psyched to have been there, probably would've danced all night.
but, at home it's... very good

C+P and DWD are good, Piper never really gets going. Agree 100% with Jedi's comments earlier in the thread.

For perspective, I was listening to some 8/93 before this one - not fair I guess.

so - while I am enjoying Phish 3.0 so far, and am happy with they way they are progressing, I agree with other comments that they are not quite at the level of Phish 1.0 (admittedly, very few are / ever were).
still, it's great music and lots of fun.

i guess that sign made its way down towards the stage?

cause i saw the dude with it after the show...

i may have said this before... but if there is anyone who is possibly bringing the h33t more than ever before.... its Sir Page Mcconnell

that psychedelic clavinet melted my face i do say

and for the whats the use accusation... i can see what line from trey would make you think that but its a line ive heard from him before in other versions of taste.... so i think that one is clearly busted  :samurai:

if it was whats the use... i would have shit myself at the show
