Phish: Wed, Oct 23, 2013
Glens Falls Civic Center, Glens Falls, NY
Set 1: Back in the U.S.S.R.*, Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan, Water in the Sky, Undermind, David Bowie, Golgi Apparatus, Gumbo, Yarmouth Road, Camel Walk, Horn > Limb by Limb, I Didn't Know, Split Open and Melt
Set 2: Rock and Roll > Seven Below > Alaska > Twist**, Wading in the Velvet Sea > Harry Hood > Chalk Dust Torture
Encore: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Notes: * Back in the U.S.S.R. was played for the first time since 12/6/94 (687 shows). ** Mike on drill.
Looks pretty good on paper. Nice Beatles bookend.
First set looks kinda all over the place (David Bowie mid-set?). Interested in how the 2nd set sounds, although Alaska and Wading are kinda bummers to see on there. Looks like the show ended strong.
I'll def listen to the highlights.
Twist was good?

Twist was cool but had typical 3.0 blue ballage. Highlights for me were Bowie, Camel Walk, Horn, R&R > SB, Twist and Hood.
:phish: payed tonight. Glad I tuned in. Worth it. Got me fucking pumped for Friday and Saturday.
I'd call that a pretty nice Phish show. Maybe even top 5 of the year.
Yeah Phish
:phish:
So good I'm pauging and driving on the way home
I felt good about Hood.

whole show man, whole show. Mid-first set Bowie was perfect. Trey and Page found this crazy matching groove tension thing about halfway through it, it was amazing. I even fucking danced to Wading. Trey even played a real guitar solo! I couldn't believe it! It had a theme and everything. Alaska was fine, but don't skip the Wading. Seriously. Its actually good. Trey was doing this nice ascending melody thing.
Twist.... holy moly. The Glens Falls Twist. Oh my word.
Gumbo was... kinda sorta jammed out. We'll have to see what the rest of you think. Undermind had a sick solo, and Seven Below built to a nice peak, and OMG TREY PEAKED HOOD. IT HAPPENED.
Seeing Phish sober is the greatest thing ever. I remember so many cool musical things they did.

I've never seen Phish sober and I never will, nor have the intention, nor wish to. I'm also hoping my friends would never let this travesty occur. 160 plus and counting.....I've got great friends.
damn. Wish i went to this show.
I'm digging the mid set bowie placement.
Stoked to hear this again as life was to busy to let me hear it all.
In defense of Alaska Jed, lotta guitar action up in that piece.
Also, if you can still hate on Velvet Sea after Coventry, you're either too young or too heartless to remember that Page cried for our sins. It's a pretty song.

Alaska stopped me dead in my raging tracks when it started, but by the end of the jam I was swaying again. I think I even jumped a couple times. The Rock and Roll and Twist, and Seven Below, and Hood, and Chalkdust however, ALL had me jumping like a fool. Awesome.
But yeah, even this version of Velvet Sea is especially good. Listen for Trey's actual musical ideas in the solo. Dude actually cared.
Now we cry when it is played late 2nd set and kills any flow or momentum.

I don't know about that. Last night I thought the Twist jam had run its course and ended exactly when it should have after a really nice, original melodic jam. I'm really looking forward to a relisten.
I'm boycotting this show for lack of an acoustic set

I will relisten for sure, it's just that I heard that blissful major key jam just moments away and it never came.
twist was good.
still think hampton2 and 3 is better than this show. typical first set. nice beatles covers. second set above average, but song selection kinda weird.
Judging by the reviews I might listen. But also in those reviews I've heard more talk of velvet sea being the highlight......so I might not listen
I understand the blue balls in the twist. But it was still a solid twist. Wish they keep jamming on what they were doing longer.
Also haven't heard much whaling in this second set which is nice
This is one of those shows where i could of gone, and should of gone, but for some reason, didnt.
And now, just like i could of predicted, im sad, pissed and annoyed with myself for not going.
There will be others...

I think most of us were just poking fun with a little bit of sarcasm.
That and I do wish I Phish came closer to me more often, cause flying out of here is some expensive ass shit. Portland and Seattle are 500 + miles from here, Denver is almost 900 miles from here, so driving is a good investment in time and money as well.
But I know where I live, and not seeing a lot of music is one of the compromises I make to stay here.

Velvet Sea was not THE highlight, it was merely its own highlight in that Trey made the song musically relevant in an era where most are offensively redundant. After that Twist, it was pretty much the perfect placement. I'm still amazed at how much Trey made the song matter by doing such a small little almost insignificant thing, by actually playing a legitimate melodic idea, and not just noodle out his solo.
Fish made this version have the right amount of energy. I'm listening to it now, attentively for the first time. Its holding up. Its got the right amount of Mike bounce, Fish drive, and Trey embelishment. The start to the solo section is really fucking nice. Trey and Page have this delicate balance thing going on against each other. Man, I can't believe I'm reviewing a fucking Velvet Sea. What the hell, Phish. Way to play your music the right way....
Trey's first idea comes in at 4:21, and then listen to Mike and Fish finish his rhythmic "idea" at 4:37. That was fucking cool. I love the chords he's "soloing" with at the 5:00 mark. Fishman accompanying perfectly with his fills... tension building at 5:33, and the thing that impressed me at the show begins at the 5:37 mark; that ascending melody makes such a difference in giving this version some relevance and staying power. Love this Velvet Sea.
Just finished a sit-through of the Twist before. Man, that is some great Phish music. I love it when Trey doesn't have to solo and they just make like, jam-songs I guess.

Yep, when listening to the stream last night I was quite pleased to hear Trey hanging back and chording during the jam.
He really should do that more often.
Also, for those taking note of time-lengths of the songs, for Hood.... they did the intro section only like TWICE before launching into the lyrics. That shows you how much jam there really was. I LOVE Mike's playing for the intro part here, he does this really cool add-on melodicismicality.
Also, for the first set, Trey actually played the riffs in Golgi correctly. Blew me away. Loved hearing that done right in an arena. Wish more people would review the music played in this show!!!!!
Listen for the brief Hose hook up between Page and Trey in Bowie. Me and this other kid behind me on the floor wigged out when we heard that happen. Kid was like 18.... it was so awesome to see someone so young actually LISTENING to the music.
MODIFY: This moment is at 7:37 or thereabouts, with Trey and Page. This Bowie is so good!

He's so much more comfortable and BETTER doing that!!! The stuff he comes up with is so cool! I hate hearing him try to solo over changes now.... the whale doesn't work. BUT!!! A BIG BUT!!! Over Rochester and Glens Falls, Trey played more FAST solo riffs than I think I've heard in all the 3.0 shows I've seen thus far combined.
The dude is trying. He's showing signs of life. Its happening.
Modify: HOLY shit this HOOD!!!! It has a peak!!! Trey plays licks over the peak!!! You can hear where the band "bursts" into the peak, and Page goes for the closing chords but Trey still is soloing. Oh man, that was such a delight to hear again.
This Chalkdust is officially nuts!!! Madness and tension!!!! Like a real Chalkdust!!! Fucking wild!!!! Listen to Trey and Fish!!! Ascension!!! Destroy!!!! Ascend and Destroy!!!! The Phish!!!

There was a point early in the R&R jam where he played a super fast lick that really stopped me in my tracks for some reason. I have to listen to it again though.
This Twist.
Tremendous peak in Hood (so nice to see those are back), great shreddage in Chalk Dust, and Trey even destroys WMGGW. What a finish.

Yeah, I just relistened for the first time. It's not terrible. Not sure I'd get on board with quite good, but it's a fine encore with bonus points for the significance of the venue.
