The VA Beach DaaM got me motivated to listen to the entire summer '97 tour. I'm about half way through (at the Gorge) and I'm enjoying the experience tremendously. Every night has something great! There were a handful of shows (Atlanta, Phoenix) that I've never heard before. The Atlanta YEM is one of the top musical moments thus far, as was the video with LeRoi. Obviously, the first 2 nights of the tour are fantastic. This first night of the Gorge is amazing, too...7 tunes over 15 minutes long!
I'm already planning on listening to fall '97 in order next, but I'm pretty familiar with all of those shows. Maybe I'll jump back to February and do both European tours as well and just knock out the entire year. hmmmmmm.
Feel free to add any comments on particular shows or jams you love from '97 or any anecdotal tour stories. I recall summer '96 being the first tour in which a lot of people did the whole thing, but that wasn't as expansive of a tour as summer '97. I know a lot of folks did the entire thing in 1997. I did the last 9 shows of the tour. What an experience to do that at 19 years old!
Deer Creek Night 1 set II is where it's at!!! That jam out Cities is some dirty and funky Phishy goodness. 4 "actual" songs played the entire set. 5 if you count the rotation jam as a song and not a wierd-ass jam out of GTBT. Set I is no slouch either. That Gin is nice and the SOAM is filthy good!

Jealous!
I actually just started doing the same. Just finished 7/26. I must say that after 3 sets in a row of Bob Gullotti sitting in on drums has me anxious to hear just the 4 of 'em.
Man, do I miss Izabella.
nice, love some summer 97. So many good moments. Love that ATL show. The shoreline show is great too. I remember the Tinley Park Wolfmans was pretty chill funk jam too, albeit a little shorter than others. And Burgettstown Gumbo is another gem in the 2nd half of tour. Then the Darien Lake madness before my favorite Phish festival to listen to, The Great Went. enjoy!
My favorite year of Phish.
The first night of the Gorge is one of my favorites. Every big song in the first set is a top version, and then they finally break out Tweezer for the first time in the funk era and it's a monster.
The summer tour is so joyful, they're so excited at having found their new sound, and exploring what they can do with it.

Nearly done w/ Fall 97. Definitely have heard new things I hadn't before as far as individual songs. The 12/13 Vultures for example. A tune from a new '97 batch that really triggers nostalgia. I've always tended to go for the dank funk jams from Fall, there are some great, darker ambient sides as well. They were hitting on all cylinders for sure.

That's some of the best reporting that The Indianapolis Star has ever done, actually. Usually reading that paper was just an hour of them shitting into my eyes and me sitting there hating every minute of it.

Like I say. If I'm not listening to 94 I'm listening to 97. That summer is absolutely insane.
The St. Louis show crushes. That is all.
Some of these shows I need to relisten to when I'm not at work so I can really pay attention. But I just did the whole summer chronologically, definitely some gems I forgot about/never heard before! 7/26 was one of these for sure! And whichever Deer Creek show that has the Cities, that shit is money.

In the summer of 94 I travelled from Maine to San Francisco and just about everywhere in between camping in National and State Parks along the way. I did not bring a camera. Summer of 95 I did most of summer tour with Phish. Again, no camera. It wasn't until I traveled to Asia in 96-97 that I decided to start documenting things on film. :frustrated:

I know i'm late to the party but I have some thoughts. I finally was able to make my way through 11/22/97 DaaM. It's a very, very impressive show. I have had the Mike's Groove SBD for ages, but seeing that Mike's Song in action gave me a whole new appreciation for it. The last half of that jam is some of the best stuff they've ever done. Billy Breathes took a ride on the Struggle Bus but I'm glad they played it.
Now, the Halley's. This is a weird version to me, because the funk to start off is fabulous, but then it meanders a bit and doesn't really connect into anything until the wah wah power hits later on. Now, the ending of this jam is amazing, but it's such a strange experience to witness them going from being locked in, to searching, and then to locked in again. I still prefer 12/7/99 but this is great of course.
I had always been a bit lukewarm on the Tweezer due to it's length but i found myself thoroughly enjoying this version, and it's placement was absolutely perfect. Not only did it bring the mood back to fun rock energy, it was also signalling something like "Yeah, we just crushed that jam - now here's ANOTHER ONE". Very confident. Just great placement. The rest of the set is just extra gravy on top. Really good show.
Having now finally watched a Fall '97 show, it's interesting to see the low-energy funk dynamic in action. It's very different than the raging peaks of early Phish, and I can see how some could be left wondering "What the hell, nothing is happening." But it almost seems like the band needed to chill out after so much rage. You can't have dark without light, and you can't have peaks without chill.
been working my way through all of 1997 in order. started with the february europe tour, listening on the actual 25th anniversary date and just kept going. i'm in the june europe segment now. so great hearing the funk slowly ooze out into what would be a super funky u.s. summer tour.
Definitely listen to more 97 Phish than any other year.
You can't find a bad show imo.

Yeah, I'd definitely take some hot jams over the Victorian era (lack of modern medicine, plus repressive social mores that would have me in chains/stocks post haste), or, you know, a pre-modern society ruled by an elite warrior caste and avidly practicing human sacrifice.
A lot of parallels between the Dead's 72 Europe tour and Phish's Winter 97 jaunt. Even Summer and Fall for both bands, 25 years apart, were expansive, representing a big shift forward.
4 day weekends starts right now...and up next...the july amsterdam run :beers: :beers:

I started doing this this morning as well. Phish.in I've made it through 2/13 & 2/14 so far today at work. I'll have time for one more show before the work day is over.
I really do love the '97 sound!

QuotePHISH, THURSDAY 11/13/1997
THOMAS & MACK CENTER
Las Vegas, NV
SET 1: Chalk Dust Torture, Black-Eyed Katy[1], Theme From the Bottom, Train Song, Split Open and Melt, Beauty of My Dreams, My Soul, You Enjoy Myself, Character Zero
SET 2: Stash, Punch You in the Eye > Prince Caspian > Bouncing Around the Room, Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove
ENCORE: Loving Cup
[1] Debut.
This show marked the debut of Black-Eyed Katy. The jam in Mike's Song included Born on the Bayou teases and Weekapaug contained Dave's Energy Guide and Can't You Hear Me Knocking teases.
Stash is on LiveBait 18 for those playing along with me. Here we go!
Hell ya I'll play along
The 11/13/97 Stash is one of the best jams of the entire tour.
Alrighty, I'm freshly listened.
Chalkdust to start is standard-great, solid high energy playing. No hesitation or fumbling, and they ramp up nicely with little tension-release layers.
I love BEK. Doubt it will ever happen but I'd love it if they brought it back without lyrics once in a blue moon. Probably was really cool in person.
Theme is good, not facemelty, but good.
I like Train Song. Album version.
Nice dark '97 Split.
Beauty and My Soul are standard, but tight and sound good.
Pretty unique YEM. No bass and drums and it seems like it's toying with that slow repetitive funk that'll keep coming back all tour. Kind of dark and slow I guess. Standard, rockin' Character Zero.
Stash is great. Very moody and travels quite a ways as it goes along.
Good PYITE. Pretty good Caspian that actually jams. (I've listened to that '95 New Haven show a couple times since Friday, with the sub-3-minute Caspian opener and literally no jam and it struck me that I can kind of understand why some people decided they hated it right away. I do like Caspian, but it's all about the jam, and this one does.) Bouncing is standard.
Really liked this Mike's Groove. Fiery first jam, second jam that leads into some nice melodic stuff. Hydrogen is pretty sloppy, but the Weekapaug that follows is super hot!
Decent Loving Cup.
I wasn't super familiar with this show. There are only a few jams that I'd probably go back to, but all things considered, a really really strong tour opener with basically nothing I'd complain about.
Listened to 11/13 yesterday as well, also enjoyed the BEK, the Stash (almost too spacey, but love how they reign it all back in), and funnily, I, too, thought "So this is what a well solo'ed Caspian sounds like" :hereyougoyousentimentalbastar
These Fall 97 Themes are so good.
this chalk dust and the first BEK is a killer way to start a tour. throw in a first set unconventional yem and you just may have been able to pick up on the foreshadowing that this tour will have a very high ceiling. i'm not a huge fan of this stash, but i appreciate the attempt to take it way out there. mike's and paug were excellent, but what the hell happened in hydrogen? was trey over-vegas'ed in 97, too?
i don't know anyone who personally went to this show (or the next.) it was a very easy ticket - a little over half sold. one vegas show on a thursday, and vegas hadn't really become a thing yet. it would be just a lil bit tougher of a ticket in a year.

sometimes i miss the days when phish didn't give a shit as to what day of the week it was. who books salt lake city on a friday and then takes saturday off?
Haha yeah Denver on a Sunday/Monday? Interesting. Funny what it's become now.
This wolfmans is slappin, pretty much whole second set. Nice 2001 > funky bitch in first set that's pretty unique.
Interesting how these first two shows have none of the new songs from the summer.

Oh, the days where this Maze was just another Maze! :)
Enjoyed the 2001 as well, and like Weekapaug the night before, they finish Slave in a blistering fashion. I think any Slave this tour kinda suffers by comparison with Hampton, but one show at a time....
I would give the nod to Loving Cup rather than Axis: Bold As Love as the better played encore from the first two nights.
i love how maze melts into fefy. the 5th 4 (or less) song 2nd set in phish history. is it 4 songs because it jams or because it's short? both. the slave is very nice, but at no point during this 2nd set do they really blow the roof off the place.

Love the Gumbo, super chill jam. Out of the many exploratory versions from '97 and '98, this one is tops for me. Twist continues to showcase more stellar improvisation, this one straight up funk into space. An all-time version no doubt.
Listening to 11/16 this morning. I never noticed it before, but I swear I hear the beginnings of what would become Frankie Says in the Timber jam.

this is probably a "had to be there" reaction, but at the time that Twist went DEEP. Like Deep Space 9. I was sober that night but still remember feeling like aliens were plucking at my brain strings.
Ran thru 11/14 twice yesterday. This show's got some high highs, but a few less high moments for me.
Jim's a typical, driving version to get the show on the road. Gumbo is funky and mellow at the same time, nice.
Maze - I think I get what they were trying to do with the dissonant, off jam jam. Page's solo section works pretty well, but it kind of falls apart when Trey takes a stab at it, and then the song falls apart for real.
Don't like FEFY, didn't listen to it. Sounds like they segued the last chords into 2001 though, and it's a solid, funky, late 90's outing. Funky Bitch and Guyute do what they do best, and the Antelope is silly and pretty great.
The Wolfman's is some more of that slow, repetitive funk that they get into so much on this tour, and honestly that's not one of my favorite things about Fall '97. Kind of gets boring to me.
The Piper is not long, but it's nice, and has a good gradual intro.
Twist and Slave is where this show really starts to shine. Beautiful, ethereal jam out of Twist. Slave is a tune that really worked perfectly with the new more expansive, atmospheric sound. Patient, sure, but it's more like they wanted to keep living in that moment for as long as possible.
Bold as Love is fine - after what they just played they deserve a quick, straight cover to wrap it up on.

I love this Twist. No, it doesn't explode in any way, but it's weird and trippy and wonderful. And the Slave that follows is a beauty.
Listening to set II of 11/16 now, and it's dynamite. 11/17 gets all the love, but it's not as coherent to me, despite all its notable highlights, as the second set the night before.

just ran through 11/16 ... man that -> from Timber to Simple is magical! perfectly executed! :beers:
I feel like the first 3 shows of the tour, they are just nibbling around the edges. plenty of transcendent moments to be sure, but overall still searching.
11/17 is the clear demarcation and from there on out its a literal game of oneupsmanship each night.
also really like this Hood, and I'm not really a hood guy.
It's Live Phish vol. 11 day, baby!!!
Any show with a 5-song 1st set is going to be a banger!
Man was that show good. And as an added bonus, I forgot that the Wolfman's -> Makisupa from the only Fall '97 show I got to see, 11/19/97, are filler on Live Phish 11! And Amazon even has the I Saw It Again soundcheck from 11/16/97 as added filler.
I've listened to the 11/17 Tweezer so many times it essentially functions as the "studio" Tweezer in my brain. It's not the best Tweezer ever, but it is, in some sense, a perfect Tweezer.
11/16 and 11/17 were the only two shows I caught this tour. The shows were good, and so was the acid.

Good question. Not sure about the snow. Omaha 96 and Portsmouth NH 12/91 are the "snow" shows I think of.
I thought I remember reading that in a show review but it could have been 11/16. Either way listening to the Trey podcast on this show now. Good insight on tour and year. Def a great period of the phish world. :music:

there was definitely snow during these days in Denver. I remember cooking at a park near the venue on 11/15 and there was snow everywhere. I think we used it to boil water, lol
12/28/92 I had to drive through an ice storm to get to New Haven from VT. My homeboy riding shotgun carved a pipe and a monopod for his video camera en route. He got some blurry footage from the tenth row or so first set, then was discovered by security and thrown out during the second set opener.
re: 11/16/97 - I love how the crowd is completely hypnotized by the Timber so when the Simple arrives it caught everyone off guard! That was great. I'm in two minds about the Hood.
On the one hand, I like it fine, and very much in line with the Weekapaug (11/13) and Slave (11/14). On the other, I think at moments Trey is a little let down by the other members - the jam gets stuck in one key (A Major I think) while Trey is wailing as the band tries to build tension, but Trey would have been better served - i.e. Trey's melodic lines - if the band would have stuck with the regular chord progression. Not a bad Hood, but could've been better.
re: 11/17/97 - not much more to add to what has already been said other than, again like the Hampton Slave, this 11/17 Reba suffers by comparison with its' Dayton counterpart (for many non plus ultra) which is a shame as this Reba has much to offer. We would talk about this Reba more if Dayton hadn't happened.
Really enjoying revisiting this tour. On the off day I listened to the gem that is Alpine 1997 to remind myself what a great show from a great year that was.....

wow, I didn't realize there was so much "meh" around 11/21. to me its a super underrated show. that entire second set is just sick.

I was very surprised by chillwigs "ranking" of it as middle of the road. might be top 5 for me.
speaking of underrated...
11-23 is pick for my most underrated show from what i've heard from others over the years.
We've discussed this multiple times here before where i consider the Gin probably my all time favorite version whereas some folk consider it trey wanking off at best.
Too each his own. nothing wrong with that.
AS a whole, feel the show is underrated though.
2nd set is pure fire in my book, but the Fluff and Stash from first set are fantastic as well.

in teh undermine broadcast they were talking about this gin and the guest said something along the lines of its like a JAckson pollack painting. just throwing shit at a canvas.
i guess thats why i like it so much. i love pollock.
but yeah i get why people dont like it.
idk, for me its definitely my fav gin they ever played except maybe riverport and i have a bias against riverport bc i had to listen to it from the parking lot LOL.
but still, i just love the intense randomness of the main part of the jam... To me its pure hose, completely free of 'trying' to form anything coherant. just purely expressive and lifts me to another level.
and also, i think people overlook the jam in the last 5 min or whatever.
i LOVE this cooldown section.
Its the perfect compliment to the first 15 min of balls to the wall headache inducing blaze.
Maybe they did this same jam another time? It suprises me people don't even mention the chill section when talking about the Gin as a whole TBH.
Regardless, i think the main takeaway from the Winston salem show should be that is was basically the 3rd Hampton show.
The 3 shows should be considered a trifecta and the sets taken as a whole all compliment each other and exhibit all aspects of the band from the tour.
For local VA heads this was the run alot of us did, and by Sunday we were all pretty much toast.
After 2 days of nonstop disco partying @ Hampton, the NC show ended up being most of us just getting shitfaced drunk.
I definitely recall making margaritas on lot and the Gin was very appropriate for the mindset of my crew at the time.
totally agree on the chill down section, love that riff that trey has going.
I really liked what brinkman was saying about this being this show basically being the yang to the Hampton's yin. I think this show really showcases how multifaceted the band truly is. from deep funk, to spacey exploration to straight up rock shredding.
in that context this show is appropriately rated.

I've always had this show in my darkhorse category for fall 97. but on this most recent listen, I walked away wanting more.
the tweezer is pretty good, but doesn't do much more than the standard fall 97 stuff, which is all amazing but still left me wanting. cool that it was show opener, but that's only cool in the moment really. rest of the set is well played and there are a few good moments in gumbo and split open.
zero to open set 2 was, again, cool in the moment. yes its jammed out, but there's not a lot of substance imho. I did find it interesting that it seems to be the middle section of hard rocking on this tour. the first was the gin on 11/23, which you could hear the influence of in the zero. the other is the wolfmans coming up on 11/30, which you can definitely hear the influence the zero has on it. I had never put that connection together before.
I will say the segues in this set are so tight though! the zero->2001 is so smooth as is the 2001->cities. past this point though the set sort of falls away for me.

ENCORE: Buffalo Bill, Moby Dick[2] > Fire
[1] Almost an hour long.
[2] Trey imitated Robert Plant's intro to Moby Dick from the album The Song Remains the Same.
This Runaway Jim is one of the longest versions of any song ever played by Phish. It ran slightly under an hour and included Beauty of My Dreams and Super Bad teases and a strong Weekapaug jam where the entire melody of Weekapaug was played. Buffalo Bill was announced as Fish's favorite song. Moby Dick was performed for the first time since February 19, 1993 (435 shows) and featured Trey imitating Robert Plant's intro to Moby Dick from the album The Song Remains the Same.

it's hard to say which one of these 3 woostah shows is the best. hell of a run. who was there?
Wish I'd been to any of these. Of these three, 11/28 is my favorite. An early tape acquisition for me, so I listened to this show a whole damn lot. Such a fun show. This was my favorite Ghost for a long time. Now... who knows, there's so many good ones out there.

on my relisten the last few days, I was really awestruck by the Jim ... honestly I usually dismiss it as just a really long thing. it sort of reminds me of the 94/95 long tweezers ... where everything is quick ups and down.
this time around, I found it all quite musical. I'd say at least 90% of it is extraordinary, with the other 10% filler. the funky/bluesy jam at about 14 minutes is so unique and exquisite, its deftness, calm, pace and group cohesion are quite something.
the wolfmans is also excellent, especially the first 20 minutes before "the vamp." some really great interplay in it. not as funky as much of this tour, but its tone is 10000% fall 97.
I also love where the band goes out of both the Jim and Wolfman's ... Strange Design and Love Me are both perfect choices.
favorite jam from this run still continues to be the YEM ... so so sick. as has been said on the Undermine pods about these shows, the band is just in complete control of everything they do, master's of their craft. truly exemplified in this YEM.
other favorites include
28th Timber
28th Ghost
29th Foam
29th Simple
29th Buffalo Bill
30th Stash
30th Jam -> Piper
30th Them Changes
much like the Hampton/NC triumverant, this run is just so phish. each show is different from the next, but as a run truly showcases this band at the absolute peak of their powers, in full command of everything. and as Carla says on the 30th pod, you can play any 5 seconds from these shows and you immediately know its fall 97.

Encore: Ginseng Sullivan > Sample in a Jar
Disease was unfinished. Trey teased Lazy in Chalk Dust Torture and Close to the Edge in Taste. Simple featured a Trey/Page musical duet.Dog Faced Boy was played for the first time since August 12, 1996 (109 shows). Ya Mar included a fun play on the actual lyrics and a Crosseyed and Painless tease. Trey teased Izabella in Weekapaug.
Set 2 used to live in my car CD player for months at a time. That Simple -> DFB is just pure magic.
The two Philly shows got me back into Phish. After December 95, I caught Clifford Ball and the two Boston NYE shows in 96, and I was starting to feel like they had peaked and would never be able to top what they had done. I was actually kind of getting bored of them at that point, perhaps due to overlistening to my tapes, but also perhaps because I felt like they kind of stagnated a bit in 96.
After Philly though, holy shit. Get right back on the bus, pcr3, because they're DEFINITELY not done, and you're gonna want to be on that ride. And now, here I am, putting on 12/2/97 to listen to while finishing my work week...
:beers:
not super familiar w/ 12-2. just got home and put on set 2. this mike's smokes!
First night of Philly was great. Def gets overshadowed by the 3rd, but the Ghost is tight and the whole Mike's > Week is A+
Great recording on Relisten
Philly #1 is highly underrated. Especially that 2nd set. the mikes is pretty good, but nothing extraordinary, but the flow of the set is excellent. the simple->dfb->yamar->paug is amazing. such a great flow and smooth transitions. and the Paug, holy smokes ... excellent, excellent version.
I found the ghost in set1 really good too. definitely overshadowed by the bigger versions of this tour, but its well played and felt longer than the 13 minutes it actually is.

[1] Simpsons signal. Unfinished.
Drowned included a Couldn't Stand the Weather jam. 2001 contained Super Bad teases from Trey. Page teased Smoke on the Water in YEM. Bowie was preceded by a Charge! tease, included Take Me Out to the Ballgame and Baby Elephant Walk teases, a Simpsons signal, and was unfinished.
I rarely spin this 12/3 show ... definitely an underrated show on this tour.
the Drowned is really good, with some groovy funk, and the Gumbo>2001>YEM is a great way to finish out set one.
this Bowie is really unique. starts out with a really long intro with plenty of language and is typical bowie, but then about 15 minutes or so they break out into an atypical section that is really exploratory. and it just keeps going, never to return to the bowie end and the -> Possum is really great.
the funk jam after possum is really really good. very interesting how its not connected to anything. I have always sort of thought of it like the post tube jam from a few nights later. thinking there was a sweet jam in possum that they just wanted to go back to. but no! this is just a stand alone jam. I wonder what made them decide they just wanted to play some funk at that moment... so random but really sick.
the best part is at the very end when page is riffing and the whole band does this tempo downshift in unison in real time... amazing.
the jam is actually almost more of a long, funky Caspian intro since the -> is really well done.
this relisten really gave me a new perspective on this show and its probably risen up my tour rankings a few spots.
overall these 2 Philly shows are really really good. its becoming a theme that these multi-day runs are like little mini-tours within the tour.
I don't have much to add that others haven't pointed out but these Philly shows are absolutely smokin. I think I prefer 12/2. That Mike's Groove is something else.

i was on the floor for this one and i remember it well. it's crazy that at the time, i thought this first set was average. if they played that antelope and that maze now, people would die. also the > foam is awesome. i am saving set 2 and all of 12/7 for friday night beers. can't wait!
For some reason 12/6, much like 11/17, took me a long time to catch on to. Thankfully I finally did. Although I still only really love this Tweezer after about the 13-minute mark, when it turns into a space jam.
Also much like 11/17, Trey doesn't really know the lyrics to a Hendrix song but it still smokes.
Absolutely agree on Antelope, Maze and the Gin into Foam. I do love how they play now, but man I would kill for them to be able to pull off an Antelope like that these days. Perfectly balanced first set too, as far as facemelters alternating with landing pads.

Yeah it's funny how many times I had the "they don't play like this anymore!" Moment during this tour revisit.
The effects are vastly different too. I gotta say they don't really use those flanger/funky synth/moog sounding textures anymore. The staccato jam in the beginning of tweezer is kinda good example. Page does from time to time but Trey still has a little harsher tone than this era so when he hits some tones in the Tweezer in 12/6 and other jams it's sounds more liquid funk which I think is the coveted sound.

This was my third show, after Dallas and Austin in the summer. I only got lucky enough to catch this one because the friend that I credit with really turning me on to Phish had gone to Wright State, and we flew up from Texas to stay with some of his college friends and go to this show. They lived walking distance from Nutter, and we walked to the show in (being from Texas) the most snow I'd ever seen in my life.
I'd told my friend the songs I wanted the most were ACDC Bag and Timber Ho, and boom, we got both as openers. I wasn't really familiar with Psychokiller at the time, but everyone I was with was psyched for that. On the other hand, I'd been on a massive Stevie Wonder kick and I was pretty shocked at the number of folks that didn't know that one.
The Tube is exactly the kind of Cow Funk I like (with a Boogie On tease a set before they played it, although that's never been noted on .net). The reprise kind of goes into the slower funk that I'm not as crazy about in Fall '97, but the Slave it turns into is still one of the greatest concert memories of my life.
Stellar versions of It's Ice, Reba, Theme, and Guyute (so fucking evil). The "Charge" thing in the intro of Possum was fun – Kuroda blacked out the whole stage and was cycling spotlights onto each of the band members on the beat.
Hard to say anything about this show that hasn't been said before.
i remember exactly where i sat and the thing that still stands out in my memory is that every single person in that place was completely and totally 100% into the show from the very first note. at the time, i felt like that crowd energy fed the band into the playing as well as they did. when phish jams into tunes that they don't even know, they are indeed at their best.
I think I'm in the minority on 12/7... its a good show no doubt, but I'm not sure its even top 10 on this tour. its so over-hyped imho.
ac/dc->psycho killer is amazing, and I love the tube, tube jam... ice->swept->steep->ice is decently cool, but otherwise its all kinda meh to me... wolfmans->boogie is a novelty, but not musically interesting.

I can kind of see where you're coming from... but my opinion on this show is forever warped by its being the fist tape I ever had of a show. I was soon to be attending halloween '98, after having seen only one show in '96, and I had Slip Stitch, but wanted to hear something else, asked a friend who was into them for a tape, he gave me 12/7. I played it A LOT. Always liked the first set better, as Guyute and Reba were not easy for a newbie to get into right off the bat. But there are grooves worn in my brain from hearing this tape so often. So, yeah. I love this one! But then I'm a sucker for everything in fall '97.
When evaluating this show do you take into consideration the hugeness of the boogie bust out? Just wondering. It was a big deal, but maybe faded quickly because that song permanently re-entered the rotation.

I think over the years though this show in particular has waned for me. just don't reach for it all that often. outside of the bag->pk and tube, I don't replay much of this one.
Anyone know why 12.7 circulated so heavily?

not that my opinion means anything because i wasnt' there, but as a Phish-obsessed stat nerd i basically never think about how 12/7/97 was the Boogie On bust out. I sort of consider it to be always there i guess. It's a weird thing haha
I had great seats for 12/6 and 12/7, 12/6 I was 2nd row in front of Page and 12/7 about 15 rows back closer to Mike.
Chatting with the guy next to me pre-show on 12/7 he seemed very wasted, and after a couple minutes of conversation he asked me if I wanted some K, lol.
Well AC/DC Bag starts up and he sits down and does his thing, and as the band segues into Psycho Killer I look over and dude is just passed out. He slept the whole set, through setbreak and didn't wake up until Possum. I checked his pulse at setbreak to make sure he was alive. I've long wondered if that guy tells people he was at the show.
Like most bust out shows 12/7 doesn't flow like other Fall 97s, but it's got highlights all over the place, and that rare mid-2nd set Reba still delivers.

BRING IN THE DUDE!!! :willynilly:
This was the only show I did from Fall '97 and actually the only '97 show other than the Great Went. Had a blast and I thoroughly enjoyed the new funk sound and the Tube bustout. I remember hearing about the 12/7 Tube and how funky it was. Is it possible that I actually heard a tape before the show? Was there a radio broadcast of the 12/7 show? Or maybe I'm thinking of the radio broadcast of Yes on 12/7/97 which was also a great show. Anyway, I had an infatuation with trying to catch Albany shows back then and tried to hit as many as I could.
The auds for that show are so boomy. Would love to hear a SBD of that Mike's. It's such a fun listen.
ETA: Also, as special and spontaneous as the glowstick war was at the Went, the glowsticks during Hood was completely nuts. Kind of trite nowadays, but it really was insane during the Hood.
got around to the Albany shows on my way to Tel Aviv the other day.
12/12 ... always such a sleeper show. solid middle-third show on the tour. opening bitch->2001->camel walk is thick. solid tweezer->train song combo. 2nd set is saucy. one big jam flow. the segue from saw it again->piper is well executed and the post Caspian jam is fire.
12/13 is just a sick sick show. possibly my favorite show of tour, although objectively it falls behind a few of the more behemoths of the tour, but definitely top-third from the tour.
opening yamar is really really well done. vultures explores a bit which is awesome and the tube is excellent. the entire 2nd set is so cohesive and shows where the band is at at this point. the ghost is a very mature version that goes through the gears nicely and the -> mikes is dope asf.
Dude jam rightly steals all the plaudits and is probably my favorite moment of the entire tour, from a memory perspective. and this hood, so underrated. an excellent improvisational version that really moves outside hood for a bit.
top top show.
after a thorough re-examination of the tour of the last month a few shows shifted in my head, but the top-third remained unchanged.
1. 11/28
2. 12/13
3. 11/21
4. 11/17
5. 12/11
6. 12/6
7. 11/22
from my personal viewpoint having done the entire fall 97 tour, these are my favorites, in order.
objectively speaking, the order would be different... and things moved around a lot in the lower middle and upper lower classes.
overall this tour is just fire. every night provided note worthy moments and as a collective I'll die on the hill that this is the best tour/best month of phish ever.
as noted on the podcast many times, the funk is what people think of on this tour, but it was truly only one component of the style and didn't set the tone imho. if anything I think its the spacier moments that tended to evolve out of the funk that are the most remarkable from this tour. the way the band was listening to each other and the patience on display is just incredible.
they truly destroyed America on this tour
Looks like we're about to get a Phall 97 archival release!

I'm still waiting on a 1997 box-set! Any tour, the whole year, just a few shows... Give me more cow phonque!
West valley 11.14.97. Don't think I've heard it.

The Gumbos and 2001 in the first set are pretty great in addition to the second set.
I'm all for any fall '97. This show is pretty hot. Twist is the standout in a great second set. Though the next show, the 16th, has an even better second set. I might have picked that one to release first. But, once again, the Phish organization has failed to check with me before releasing shows. Sigh.
Nice 11/14 is pretty solid. Agree on the 1rst set gumbo.
Second set is just nonstop so can't hate on that.
I listened to the first set and it is, indeed, a very quality set. I could hear some Trey laughs as gumbo started getting cow-funked. Mike said yes.
