Title: mmm, coffee
Post by: jedifunk on February 10, 2007, 09:17:57 AM
so besides my love of wine, my other liquid passion (eww gross) is coffee...

my in-laws just got back from hawaii and were kind enough to buy me a couple pounds of local Kona!   (yeah its good enough that i'm giving it a banana)

i typically have 2 cups of joe in the morning, sometimes more...  and typically its from a french press, which i think is the best way to enjoy coffee

and mmm, this kona is goooooood!

i also enjoy several frou-frou drinks as well (as my dad would call them).... namely a hazelnut latte, and my favorite drink is oregon chai with 2 shots of espresso...  thats the best drink, the perfect blend... you get the sweetness of the chai (has to be oregon chai, that other stuff sucks) and the 2 shots cut down on the sweetness just enough, and add a bit of the bitter coffee flavor making it a wonderful drink...

so who else here really gets into their coffee?

when i lived in Hawaii, i got really spoiled with the Kona.
i brought pounds back for my Mom and myself, but havent really
tried to seek it out since then.

i drink two or three 16oz cups of coffee a day.
i used to get any flavored coffee (hazelnut, vanilla nut, butter toffee NO FRENCH VANILLA) and drink it black.sometimes a straight up, non-flavored black coffee is good for me, too
lately i coat the bottom of my cup ever-so slightly with some sort of flavored creamer.
and no sugar for this guy (as i type away with this toothache).

   I take it black...like my men :-D

Seriously, one of my favorite moments of the day is the first cup...Usually maxewell house blend. If Im feeling particularly frisky, Ill buy something exoctic, but generally its too expensive for us as we drink alot of coffee.

I drink 2 cups of joe to begin my day.  I like all kinds, light on the sugar w/ milk.  I'm enjoying my second cup right now.
Usually after I finish my java I segue to my first bowl.

I'm a black coffee guy. usually one cup a day, now. more than that makes me tweak.
I'll drink coffee from anywhere if needs be, even the jiffy Lube sludge.

At home we have a single cup machine... Senseo (sp?) and it makes a pretty good cup.

We brought some beans back from Jamaica for 'special occaisions'. for that we'll rock the french press.

yes!!!! coffee is my great friend.  i was actually coffee free all the way up until summer tour 2004 somewhere on the way to alpine valley when i tried a mocha and it changed my world forever.  now i live in oregon where espresso is the unofficial state drink and 'oregon speed balls' are the unofficial state past time.  i LOVE the light roast coffee (more caffeine) ground to a dust a put in my espresso machine.  then added to steamed milk with a dash of cinnamon, chocolate and raw sugar.  yum.  all this talking makes me realize it's about that time, me being awake and all.

another caffeine addict. black, just plain coffee.

I get my coffee from a place called Thanskgiving Coffee company in Fort Bragg CA, partly cause I like the coffee, partly cause I like the company policy, and partly cause of this story:

We were in Mendocino on vaca a few years ago, and the coffee there was Glendeven Inn Blend by thanksgiving (you can guess the name of the B+B. I saw one of their stores downtown and asked for this Blend, but they didn't know what it was. they sent me to what I thought was their main store in Fort Bragg (next town over). We get there, and it was more of a wharehouse. Some guy walks up to me and asked me if he can help. I told him and he asked the guy next to him what the blend was, and made some up. We started chatting and it turns out this guy was the owner of the company. He took me back to the "cupping room" to taste some new blends. He finds out I'm from NY and tells me his story,
He was lying on the ground, tripping one night in Washington Sq park, when 2 people stip over him. he looks up and it was Dylan and Joan Baez. Not sure what the relevance of this was, but he decided to leave NY after he got back from Woodstock, and just got this idea of becoming a coffee roaster. He bought this old roasting machine and carried it cross country and went into business.
He uses only fair trade shade grown coffee from renewable resources. He and his son frequently go to South America to meet the growers and support them. He has this huge compost heap on site (he proudly showed me his worms) and the trucks run on bio-deisel.
The company is a great example of how you can make a good product, be environmentally and 3rd world friendly, and make a profit. check them out at Thanksgivingcoffee.com

sorry for the long post, but I like to support this company.

one of my evil passions...when i moved to Flagstaff i was a baker in a coffe shop that roasted their own beans and i got hooked.  It was beneficial for my 6 day a week graveyard shift, but i began to drink about 12 double shots a night and wondered why i couldnt sleep at night(during the day)  so i eventually weened off the espresso by pulling 15 shots into a container(i baked with it!) and would collect all the crema off it and just eat/drink that...now i usually have one triple-shot with steamed half and half per day.

lookout, i'm heading off topic here for a quick sec (but hey, i started this thread)...

fett - i've gathered that you're a baker who owns his own bakery... do you mail order?  if so, what type of baked goods do you offer, and how do i go about getting some?

ok, back on topic... we typically by peace coffee, which is fair trade, organic shade grown, and i believe is roasted locally here in the twin cities... its about $1 more per pound, but i think its worth it, not only because of the flavor, but because i feel like its helping someone back where the beans are grown.

My works in turkey a lot, and he brought back home with him a coffee machine that makes decent turkish coffee. I really like it. It makes me feel ethnic.

Other then that, I just like plain coffee.

Oh, and if you live in New York or happen to find yourself in SoHo, check out the Aroma coffehouse there. They are an Israeli chain, and they make a kickass cup o' joe.

I am a coffee addict.  Much like beer, I feel I am a reverse connoisseur.  Normally I just make regular old folgers, with cream & sugar.  If I not at the office or home, my favorite coffee is gas-station coffee, out of those big coffee-makers with the two coffee-pot-hot-plates on top.  Except when I happen to be in the Northeast, where  dunkin' donuts still exists.  That shit is good too.  Especially b/c I always seem to have a hangover when I'm in the northeast

One pot a day for the wife and I.  Used to just use folgers, then my sister-in-law bought us a grinder and now whole bean is the only way I like it.  I worked in a restaurant/coffee shop for about three years.  Got pretty spoiled on the fru-fru drinks.  One of the guys I worked with used to walk over to starbucks, which was around the corner, to get his coffee.  He was that hooked on starbucks.  Even free coffee drinks couldn't lure him away.I never understood the appeal of starbucks, in fact I shun them, much like wal-mart.  No matter how cheap or convenient some things are, someone pays, and its usually someone like yourself or your neighbor.

Nice...

I like mine extra creamer, extra sugar.  And I just can't find any coffee that can beat Dunkin.  Maybe it's the donut that I get with it.

I hear McD's coffee is getting better ratings these days also, but I haven't had it in a whil.

my foo-foo is the vanilla frappuchino.  I like iced coffee.

I did go on a tea kick.  Green tea, chinese Oolong tea, white tea, and my old faithful, yerba mate.

yes!  we get jim's here in the twin ciites as well... great stuff, i just had his wonder blend as our last pound.

as for starbucks, i grew up in the northwest, and of course starbucks is the one that started it all (at least in the large scale that it is now).... but their coffee sucks... never ever EVER liked it...

when i was living out there, i much preferred the portland based coffee shop, coffeepeople best... here in the twin cities it typically caribou coffee that we go to... unless we're in the right are then we go to our old favorite spot (before we moved) called anodyne.

Dunkin Donuts Coffee is the best coffee in the world, that's not only my opinion but the opinion of the coffee brokers of the world.  I have a friend who works for them (on the corprate side) and he travels all over the world looking for new and different items for them to bring back and totally Americanize, but the he said when he tells people who he works for and what he does the one thing everyones asks him for is a couple pounds of their coffee, and I mean everywhere.  I love the stuff, its all I drink for the most part.  Our 1st Starbucks just opened and not that many people go there (this is also the town where the 1st Ben & Jerry's franchise outside of VT failed), but there are eight DD all within a 10 mile radius and there more being built.

There are 22 Dunkin Donuts within a five mile radius of the house I grew up in...
There is one at the end of my road, 12 house away. Our contractors yard is located behind a DD.
Guess where I go for my coffe fix...
...and yes, it is THAT good.

Just got back from NOLA.  Great weekend, but thats besides the point.  After a long night on Bourbon St, we went to Cafe du Monde.  Some of the best coffee and Beignets I have ever had!!!!  Great stuff.  I would highly recomend it to anyone if their in the area.  We liked it so much, we went back the next morning for round number 2.  On a daily basis, I usually bring a 16 ounce silver to go mug to work with me every day.  Just black.  On a side note, I visited Boston last year about this time, and was really taken aback by the sheer number of Dunkin Donuts around that town!!!  Their seemed to be one on every corner.

no offense, but dunkin donuts coffee SUCKS BALLS.  please dont call it coffee... IMO its the shwag of coffee, just like gas station coffee...

now i will say its been some time since i've had a cup of DD coffee, since there are zero DD's here in the twin cities, but i grew up out west and they were out there...

i just don't see how you can possibly compare DD to a fresh ground cup of french press that you made yourself?  its not even a contest...

now, it might be that its the best MASS PRODUCED coffee, but its certainly not the best overall

I have to agree with those who find Dunks repulsive...I live in RI, DD central, and I avoid it at all costs...for all you real coffee connoisseurs out there you've got to try new harvest roasters.  Their french roast is probably the most fantastic thing I've ever had in the world of coffee.  A little pricey, but organic and fair trade certified.  Do yourself a favor and order a pound, you'll be glad you did.

DaDunks coffee is not the best, but they know how to sell it...they are offering espresso based drinks now and the machines they make them with are hands down the most fool proof and best espresso machines out there Franke.  Now where they get their beans and who roasts it and is it fair trade and organic and shade grown, no way...but niether is starbucks...they are all corporate whores. Do it yourself and it is better!

Believe it or not Trader Joes has some pretty good coffee.  Usually get the Bay Blend and "ultra roast"  going to try the Sumatra Ultra Dark tomorrow.
Tend to by Starbucks Gold Coast a lot.  Its the only shop in town.  I do like some of the Green Mountain Coffees as well, both the Nantucket and Harvard Blends are very good.

Equipment is where its at.  I want a french press, but my Cuisinart Drip maker has a timer and comes on at 6:55am every morning.
I combine that with a Kitchen-Aid Proline  Burr Grinder

You don't have to like it, but I'm telling you that DD's coffee is considered the best in the world, not just highest selling and most volume, but flavor wise the people who deal in coffee it's what they want.  The 1st business I ever owned was a coffee shop and it didn't work because people didn't like the fact that it didn't taste like DD's coffee.  The sad part is they're the reason that part of my business didn't work and I still drink it.

You are right about that, but the key word is LOCAL, someone in Luxembourg has never heard of the Koffee Kat (my local choice), and there is no way that they'll ever hear about it even though they have a web site and you can order their beans through the mail, I'm not saying that all the places you prefer to buy coffee are bad, I don't know, I haven't been to them,  I'm just saying that as far as the commodity of coffee is concerned that DD's is considered the best and I personally enjoy it as well.

coffee is one of the standard commodities of the world... they measure many things based on the price of coffee...

nothing quite like Dorman's Kenya AAA, i love that stuff.  lots of varieties, and it's relatively cheap (about $8 for 20oz i think) and available everywhere in East Africa.

i'll have 2 cups a day most of the time, but when i was doing construction work, i'd have 3-4 cups minimum.  i guess i'm not as much of a caffeine junkie as i once was, but i've been drinking coffee/tea for as long as i can remember...

mmm, yes... coffee...

i caught this skimming back thru the threads and i thought i'd put my 2cents in.

black coffee is the best. but, if need be i like a little cream. don't really like it sweet. flavored creamer is alright.
i grew up drinking bailey's and coffee with my mom. so good :)

DD isn't prevalent here, or anywhere else i've lived....
i'm an avid fan of waffle house coffee. i got addicted while bartending in RVA.
i tended bar in carytown and lived on the edge of the west end towards town.
the waffle on broad was like 2 minutes from my house, so i became a regular.
when i moved back home in december, they bought me a zippo with my initial on it
because i smoke too much and then as i was leaving my last night... they snuck me a bag of their coffee
beans out to my car and a grinder so i could enjoy their company from home. i ran outta beans in april :(

so if you're ever in RVA and are craving the waffle... hit up the broad street one.
if you see a short, RED-headed, bouncy lady... her name's dolly. she'll be there for years to come.
tell her you know me and you'll be royalty :)

I'm the nerd who has a digital scale, digital thermometer, a stopwatch and a precise hand grinder to help feed my urges.  I worked as a pastry chef for a coffee roaster in flagstaff back in the day, and my addiction has ebbed and flowed.   After a trip to Honduras, I went full bore on the third wave boutique roasters.

I found onyx coffee labs from Arkansas of all places and they never fail to impress.   I keep a detailed journal of tasting notes, single origin, brew time, etc.

Anywho, I just got a new shipment of this species of coffee that was thought to be extinct, but a small farm in Colombia had a few plants and have started growing more of it.   It's called eugenoids.   It is a tiny bean that they are vacuum sealing green beans and allowing them to ferment in a warm water bath for 3-5 days, then roasting.   I paid waaaaay too much for it, but it is mind blowing.   It tastes like fruity pebbles and Coca-Cola.   Super sweet with very little acidity, so the flavors just linger in your mouth.

I use an aeropress with 1:13 ratio of coffee to water heated to 193 F.   If there are any of you who are into coffee, check out onyx's stuff, but also the aero press, cause it makes a great cup of coffee and is very simple to use and clean.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the review! That reminds me of that expensive cat poo coffee out there.

Sounds dank! I was looking into the Aerorpess because I have been using a french press for a while now. It makes up to 3 cups right?

The aeropress will make one 7 oz cup of normal coffee or you can make 3 "espresso" style shots that can be turned into americano cups.  I moved away from the French press because I couldn't enjoy the full carafe before it had cooled too much.

The civet poop (kopi Luwak) coffee has led to some caged animals being force fed nothing but coffee cherries and is honestly not as great as it is a unique and weird product.  There is a guy in Kenya who is working on a nature preserve feeding elephants the cherries and then collecting the beans from elephant dung.   It's at least a more civilized method, but I'm not completely sold on either one.   :sbw:

Personally I use a Kalita Wave (metal one) for pour overs and a french press before work.

I just found a new roaster right down the street from me, and they blew me away honestly. Moru Rosters in Denver. I know Dragonfly is up in Boulder which has won roaster of the year many times over. But up until I moved out here I mostly bought from Brandywine Roasters in Delaware, they have so many good varieties. I try to only ever get single origin, especially for pour overs. For my french press, I'm okay with blends especially because they're usually cheaper, and the press is for my 1L of coffee for the day :hereitisyousentimentalbastard

I get my coffee from Thanksgiving coffee in Cali (see post on 1st page of thread for more info). Lots of their proceeds go to good environmental causes, etc. They were grower friendly and environmentally conscious before anyone else was talking about it

My wife has started getting Black Rifle Coffee - they send proceeds to Veteran's causes. I always supported Vets, especially since my step son enlisted
Both companies make very good coffee

For brewing, I prefer pour over for 1 - 3 cups. To make a pot I use a Techno Vorum Mocha Master - love it
One of the best wedding gifts we got was a Breville Espresso / Cappucino machine that gets use on weekend afternoons, etc.

don't underestimate burr grinders

Key point here.

I have a friend who will bust out a particle size analyzer for when he buys a new batch of beans to see specifically how fine to grind them.... But his kitchen also looks like a meth lab with all the coffee brewing gear he owns. I'm not that crazy, I swear.

I use this to hand grind my beans coarsely for cold brew:

https://handground.com/

I drink this stuff black, which I never did before cold brewing.  Also, I use beans that I buy in bulk from Wegmans, so it's not like I'm spending a lot on the product.  I am, however, enjoying the best coffee I've ever had every single day.  I think  :sbw:,  :wtu:, and vtsunrise may have all tried it and enjoyed it...

I got a cold brew rig for Xmas and am still trying to get it dialed in.  The grind size makes a huge difference as to the effectiveness so I might check this out.  I'm slowly getting it better, the first couple of batched were rough.  I rarely drink hot coffee.

I put my cold brew set up away cause I kept overshooting the mark and getting wayyy cracked out during the day. I tend to like mine dark, so I'd usually do a 1:1 ratio of concentrate to water. I just never liked how 1:2 concentrate to water tasted.

But I use a Toddy Coffee setup when I make it. Have a pretty dialed in system.

Yeah, weird, I have been unable to get mine dark enough, even after 18 hours.  That's why I think my grind is not small enough but I don't want to get coffee through the filter.  Mine is a Zulay...pretty cheap but it was a gift so giving it a shot.

Yeah the toddy is way different than what you have. But I use 12oz grounds to 64oz of water, I use a super coarse grid since gravity and a wool filter are what I'm working with. But it's a pretty solid outcome when I leave it for like 16-18 hrs. Honestly, it's so strong sometimes I'll do a second brew with a few ounces of fresh grounds mixed in.

Mine sits in the fridge brewing for 36-48 hours.  First batch, first time trying it, I forgot that it was concentrate, so I drank a big ole glass of it on the rocks.  Tasted...intense, and not in a good way.  I was pretty disappointed, but got through the glass somewhat quickly.  About a half hour later I was sweating and gritting my teeth like I had done two grams of coke in 5 minutes...

Now I generally do 1:1 water to concentrate, sometimes a little bit more water.  Like a good scotch, that extra water actually brings out all of the flavors.

BUMP

So the wife bought us some of the Pollock Blend from Commonplace Coffee and I have got to say that this is, excuse me, a DAMN fine cup of coffee! I've had 'I can't tell you' how many cups of coffee in my life and this is one of the best.

Really tasty stuff.

Bonus is that it came with a cool little walking coffee cup sticker by Pollock taboot!

for anyone that travels or perhaps heading to a phish show soon, I've been using this great app for finding excellent specialty coffee shops around the world.

https://www.roasters.app (https://www.roasters.app)

its aimed at specialty/third wave shops, so if you like v60, chemex, single origins this could be helpful for you.

enjoy

Somehow I missed this thread back in the day.  I started my specialty coffee journey as a head baker for a coffee roaster with 4 cafes in flagstaff 23 years ago.  I hate baking!  Fast forward to 2020, left the restaurant business and moved back to work for the same company as their GM.  I do all the bean purchasing and most of the roasting.

I recently have been enjoying a nice natural processed Kenyan that has some delicious fruit punch and honeydew flavors.

I am as into coffee as I am into Phish!

that's amazing! finding specialty coffee on my travels is an obsession for me.

I'm building out a new feature for my blog that maps all the best roasters and coffee shops I've found.

as I said above, that app has really helped me a lot since I found it towards the end of last year.

I also keep tasting notes from each cup I have... here's a few of my favorites recently:

Quote3/19 - MTRM Roast, Budapest
Wonderful, wonderful spot. Out of the center in a random neighborhood. Charmingly rustic vibes and nice owners.
Colombia. Geisha. Washed. Fermented. V60. Gigante, Huila. Los Patios.
Wow! Sweet peaches! So good. Floral notes of rose hips to finish. Fantastic cup!

Quote3/13 - Nomad Coffee Lab, Barcelona
My favorite in the world. Can't come to Barca and not visit.
Colombia Peach. V60. Caturra varietal. 1930m. Culturing process. Peach, apricots and cane sugar. https://nomadcoffee.es/products/peach
Peach comes through from the start. The apricot and sugar cane blend to give you a wonderful jam finish. Delightful cup.

Quote2/23 - kartell collective, Marrakech
Beautiful space. Lots of plants. Outdoor space.
Costa Rican, v60. Tarrazu, Cordilla del Fuego. Honey process. Oh what I've missed. Punchy and rich. Black currants and honey. Spices on the finish.
El salvedorean. V60. Vega Ans, Andres Salaverria. Honey process. Black tea & dates. Yum
