Title: December '95
Post by: anthrax on November 19, 2020, 08:12:26 PM
The thought has entered my head to listen to each of the December '95 shows including the new years run on the 25th anniversary date.  Would anyone like to join in this endeavor?  I feel like I may need some support to complete this lofty goal.

I'm in. Caught them all except for the NYE run. Cold as balls. Great paper. Lots of french bread pizza from that one dude making them in his truck. That's what I remember.   :phish:

Yep - last time I saw that guy was at the first bonnaroo - but he basically saved my life at that one! He was around for-fucking-ever!

Ski coaching. We always had a post-Christmas training camp while the athletes were home for the holidays. My first Phish NYE was 2013 - post-coaching retirement. I did do 1 night of the 2012 run, but they sucked so bad, I stewed all night post-show and then gave away the rest of my tickets for the run in the morning and drove home. The next night was a heater of course....

Ahhh, makes sense.
I have to book that week off now for my daughter's training every year.
It should be interesting to see what that will look like this year.

ETA. Can't imagine tossing away a Phish ticket but I'm sure you had your reasons. Even when they're not on, it's better than most shows out there(Coventry notwithstanding).

I could get into this. Saw the New Years run and a slew of November shows that tour, I think I can handle the December shows.

I'm down, a lot of them are already in regular rotation.  That french bread pizza was the shit especially in the freezing temps.  I remember housing some after one of the Placid shows.  I was lucky enough to do the bulk of these, missed a few, notably Hershey and Niagra Falls, and also missed Amherst but I think I saw the rest.  Skipped first two of New Years run in MA, but went to MSG.

I did a pretty good run through of all of them when HFPod did their thing with Chopaganda on Dec. 95.  I think it was two years ago but it might have last year.  Worth listening to if you hav not heard it.

Also, my money is on NYE 95 for the NYE DAAM.  Just thinking about the possibility makes me chub. But then I think they will pick some 3.0 NYE and I instantly de-chub.

I can't keep up with a full month project due too all the other things but I'm gonna hit a few for sure.
I saw two shows this month (and 2 in November) and my life was accelerating to major change (babies rule!). Love Dec. 95.

HERSHEYPARK ARENA
Hershey, PA
Soundcheck: Buried Alive > Down with Disease, Dog Log, Funky Bitch (half-speed)

SET 1: Buried Alive > Down with Disease > Theme From the Bottom, Poor Heart, Wolfman's Brother[1] > Chalk Dust Torture, Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird[2], Stash, Cavern

SET 2: Halley's Comet > Mike's Song -> Weekapaug Groove, The Mango Song > Wilson > Suspicious Minds > Hold Your Head Up, David Bowie -> Catapult[3] -> David Bowie[4]

ENCORE: Suzy Greenberg

[1] Trey flubbed lyrics and remarked that, since he likes them so much, he would sing them again.
[2] Narration referenced chocolate and the rhombus.
[3] Started over David Bowie hi-hat intro.
[4] Homer Simpson quotes ("mmmm... chocolate") and Simpsons signal.

Trey flubbed the lyrics to Wolfman?s Brother and remarked that, since he likes them so much, he would sing them again. The narration during Mockingbird referenced chocolate and the rhombus. Weekapaug was played in a different key. Catapult started over the Bowie hi-hat intro, which also featured quotes of Homer Simpson (?mmmm... chocolate?) and a Simpsons signal.  This was the first time ever that Mike?s and Weekapaug were played without anything in between them. This show is available as an archival release on LivePhish.com.

here we go!  come for the mike's.  stay for the chocolate.
sold out show in..Hershey of all places.  i don't know much about this town, but it just goes to show you phish could draw just about anywhere in the NE at that time, no doubt surprising promoters and venue owners all over the place.
first time they'd play Hershey, so they had to have a little fun with the chocolate theme.  8,500 people at $20 each, making it a "smallish" arena for the band in the NE at that time.  first ever mike's directly into paug!

This show rules your face.

I was there and oh, man. Football in the stadium across the parking lot. The scent of cheap chocolate in the air. A nice small room. What a vibe.
We were low on Page side.

It's so good. There was a group stream of the video a while back with the Beyond the Pond guys and it was the first time I ever watched it.  The first set is relentless. and topping it all off with Bowie>Catapult>Bowie is about as classic as it gets.  Chef's Kiss.  If I had attended this show, I would imagine it would have a solid place in my TOP 10 Attended, likely hovering around the 5 mark. I might like this better than all of the Fall 95 I did see, though 12/14 hard to top.  But I give it the edge over Albany and Portland tbh.  This show just has the song selection for me.  I am happy it just beat Rochester 97 in Round 1 of the show bracket, it deserves to, and Rochester is legit.

We will have to do a complete December ranking at the end of this all. I'm not sure where I rank this one. Gonna see if the years have aged some of the others for better or worse.

In. I have not listened to all the shows (ducks), so it will be fresh ears on some of them. I caught New Haven, Albany, Portland, Providence, and NYE. Albany is my favorite show ever attended for reasons that go way beyond the music, which I thought was perfect throughout. Anyhow, off to listen to 12/1 for the first time...

most of the venues that fall were of that nature...part of what made it so special imho...they really found their niche in that sized venue, and the music showed. totally allowed for awe inspiring dynamic shifts...I caught the first 2 weeks of december and it was just glorious.

Anyhow, off to listen to 12/1 for the first time...

I want to shame you, but the truth is I'm just jealous you get to hear this show for the first time.

I'm at the end of set one right now, and this is just about as close to perfection as you can get, IMO. The opening Buried Alive > DWD could arguably be the greatest one/two punch to start a show ever - Trey absolutely destroys his guitar on those solos. Easily one of, if not the best, type-1 Diseases ever.  Just perfection, I don't think Trey hits a single wrong note and he hits all the right ones - every note in his solo has purpose.

Theme is fantastic.  Poor Heart is FAST and ferocious like it should be played - bonus points for Fishman on the wood blocks during Mike's solo. Wolfmans is.... new.  Chalkdust is a rager.  There's almost not much specific to say about the set -- they are just crushing every song and the pacing is on point. I'm up to Stash and I don't think they've stopped for more than 2-3 seconds between songs.  Claaaasssssic Philosophy/Science/Religion narration. Mmmmmmmm chocolate.  Trey interestingly enough didn't nail Mockingbird like I anticipated he would... but.... not too bad, he gets a pass this show.

Stash is dark, dissonant, DENSE, heavy and just plain fucking awesome. Trey hits the Leslie for a bit, Fish hits the china cymbal about 15 times in a row = climax is achieved.  What a jam.  By the way, for those who don't play drums -- Stash is possibly the single hardest Phish jam to emulate. Think about it.... there's no back beat.... there's really not even snare drum...... it's not even a beat that repeats.... it's just Fishman dancing around the cymbals and adding in little fills and toms here and there.  Even when it hits it's highest peak..... he's usually just playing High hat and Ride cymbal, there's no back beat! It's so unique and so impossibly difficult to emulate.

Alright, that was fun. Set two coming up.

Getting to play the 12/1 DWD on Guitar Hero was super fun, definitely one of the best type 1 versions.

What Trey play between 5:18-5:30 in this Mike's Song is just bonkers.
and then what he plays at 10:42 .......which ultimately launches the jam into the next section.... is just everything I love about Trey.
Goodness gracious, and there he is again at 4:10 in Weekapaug with just the sickest melody you could ever play (is that a tease?)

It can't be said enough how important the pacing of a show is - and this show succeeds in a rapid pace! Every single song smashes into the next.... Even when they played Suspicious Minds, I couldn't decipher a moment where Trey switched to the drums.  They are just relentlessly beating you over the head with music.  There's about a 30 second gap between the end of HYHU and Bowie and that's the longest time there's been no sound all show. Oh, and the Bowie smokes in traditional mid-90's fashion.

Well, I didn't initially intend to smash through this entire show this morning, but here we are. It was just too good to stop. Looking forward to revisiting all these shows. I miss Phish.  :phish:

stoked to dig into this one again.  I'll prob just listen to the AUD all the way through on Relisten.  I was in the 10th row for this one.  One of the shittiest venues out there but it was my local arena growing up (I was 30 miles north of MSG and 30 miles south of this one) so I saw a buttload of shows and events there in 80s/90s.  This might have been the last time I was there.  Then they imploded it.

a 240 mile drive and we're at our next stop.  i'm not super familiar with this show, so i'm looking forward to diving in this morning.  as i look at the attendance numbers, mar is totally right.  a lot of the venues are about the same size.  this place holds just over 10,000 people.  this night was sold out at $18-$22 tix.

don't forget this monster tweezer dsbd is on the FTA #14 from festival 8 - thanks again to khalpin for this awesome spreadsheet!

stoked to dig into this one again. Then they imploded it.

most of the venues that fall were of that nature...part of what made it so special imho...they really found their niche in that sized venue, and the music showed. totally allowed for awe inspiring dynamic shifts...I caught the first 2 weeks of december and it was just glorious.

The thing I remember distinctly about the sound at this run of shows was the drums - booming and deep. For me it had all been theaters prior to this run; I don't think I'd seen them in anything larger than 2,000 people (aside from Red Rocks 95). And although I enjoyed the theater PA sound, I fell in LOVE with the arena monstrosity.

Interesting perspective, I never thought of that.

even though phish was playing big places in '95, they were still a very niche band.  when i go see a show, it's no secret that a majority of the time i want to be bashed in the face until i scream "uncle."  it's been that way for me since i was in high school, so this mid 90's sound won me over instantly.  however as we get older and phish becomes more accessible, i find a lot of people who have seen more 3.0 shows (or just 3.0 shows) can't take that pace you guys are talking about.  i find it funny, but i get it.  probably why you see mostly dudes at slayer and way more chicks at phish now.

Yeah, I didn't think of Phish as a light playful entity this fall. They were fucking evil, bad muthafuckas. It was a battle on a headful; you earned your stripes. A least once a show I'd find myself uttering "this is it, you're past the point of no return, you are truly insane".......and then they'd play something like Mango Song and I'd laugh hysterically at the dark place my mind had sunken to. Good God, I'd give anything to do it all again one more time.

Listened to most of 12/2 yesterday.  Great show.  Not Top 5 of the month but even the bottom 5 of 12/95 slaughters almost all comers.  Might be the only Caspian opener I've ever seen, and even though it caught us off guard at the time (and we probably railed on it), it's a good early version.  You can tell they are hyped being back in New England for the first time in 3 months.

90 miles is all it took to get to settle in for the next 2 nights.  i'm not a huge fan of traveling in the northeast, but you can't argue with these show distances.  i assume these were big college shows?  any of you walk to them?  10,509 tickets sold out each night.  was Dick Vitale at these shows?

Red Rocks and UMASS '95 were the first time I witnessed the scene go AWOL, as phans took on the forces. Red Rocks had lots of naked people streaking through town, glass store fronts shattered, and general roving mobs looking for instigation. UMASS similarly spiraled out of control. I can't remember which night, but the night with the huge snowball fight triggered the overzealous campus police vs. wook battle. Lots of wanton vandalism ensued. Consequently, Phish were banned from both venues, returning 15 years later (2009 and 2010 respectively).

Definitely one of the more tamer shows of the month.  But the Timber was a rager and it was just a Monday night show, coming off three smoking shows the week before (arguably more than that).  Now the next night on the other hand....

12/4 def one of the lower ranked shows of the month with good reason.  But, it's still Dec.95 so it's got some good stuff.  I went straight for the timber ho, which was good, and I even like sparkle.  Billy Breathes was nice as well and the YEM also very good.  All in all the second set is a little flat.  Not bad in any way but nothing compared to the week to come, or even the next night.  Speaking of the next night, I had to dive in, I could not wait.

I'll give the whole show a play tomorrow but I couldn't wait to dig into arguably the greatest Hood ever played.  It's not my personal all-time fave (Smith College has that honor) but it is as good as any ever played.  Went through it three times tonight and it's just sublime.  12/30 gets all the love and it's a top version as well, but 12/5 is the best Hood of this month, hands down.  And that's saying something.  Every 12/95 Hood is beyond.  12/5 is just beyonder.  Don't sleep on the Bathtub Gin either. 12/5 is $$$ and I'll give it a full play tomorrow.  And probably play Hood 3 more times too.

Does this mean I am more of a jaded vet than Paul? That's one of the first shows I was instructed to listen to as a kid. Was one of my go to shows for years when all I wanted to hear was Mike's and DWD.

Me ignoring RJ's advice for years does not make you any less of a noob.  While I may not have listened to 12/1, I did attend 12/2...

Honestly, the fact that you went to 12/2 makes not listening to the night before even more egregious.
I mean, what the hell are you doing with your life?

These days, pretty much nothing.

I will add that I?m sure I?ve heard bits of all of these shows. I don?t think I?ve ever put them on to listen to in their entirety. I don?t have the time available to do that. I realize that puts me in the minority here. Doesn?t mean I don?t love it though.

I'll go to bat for my man pcr3 here.

As with such legends as Prince, Bowie, Bill Laswell, the ever-lovin' Grateful Dead, &cetera, & ad nauseum, the Phish have delivered such a glut of archival material that no casual listener should be expected to familiarize with it all. It's just not a realistic proposition. We've been through the "noob/vet" thing here, and done it to death, but...

...wait, am I *defending* pcr3?

Fuck. I lost my train of thought.

...

Point being (I'm pretty sure), pcr3 needs to fuck right off.

12-1-95 is one of the first 30 or so full show archival releases and one or the first five shows they released on video.

Rules your face rhetoric aside, it is no way an under the radar show and anybody who has not listened to it in the year 2020 probably should go ahead and quit Phish forever and pray to ikkulus that he have mercy on his soul.

The Melt jam included a tease of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Reba included a Pop Goes the Weasel tease and did not contain the whistling ending. Weekapaug was unfinished. Mike and Fish teased Maze in the Digital Delay Loop Jam. This show was officially released as Niagara Falls.

400 miles west and we arrive at Niagara Falls.  Again, this is such a weird choice for an arena show in early December, but the Phish brought in over 8,700 paid on a Thursday night.  It was very close to a sell out by showtime.  This Mike's > Weekapaug could only be followed by Amazing Grace.  Had they played another barn burner after Weekapaug, the falls might have evaporated from the heat.

Additionally, me and some of the other moms from my facebook group have begun to petition our congressmen.  We want to get a warning placed on the Split Open & Melt that clearly states not to operate heavy machinery while listing to it.  The safety of our community, and thus the world, depend on it.

Haha, no doubt.  This is one I left off my list of not attended.  I always forget about this one which is crazy because it is such a smoker.  Great show.  My wife said it was freezing cold and all of the spray coming off the falls was causing the observation deck to be covered with a sheet of ice.  She said they spent the whole afternoon inside watching people on the deck, including Page, try to navigate it only to invariably end up on their butts.

I get it.  It appears I should quit Phish.  Thanks to all, this has been very helpful!

Planning to give 12/7 a spin tonight to remind myself of the show.  Like 12/1, I've heard it before, but have forgotten the specifics.  I've skipped the UMass shows for now, just like I did 25 years ago.  Back then, it was because of finals and term papers, this time it is because of being slammed at work and home.

Considering what I've heard about the weather for this tour, I wonder how bad it was on this drive which featured nearly 200 miles along the east side of Lake Erie.  Us midwesterners know to watch out on the southern and eastern sides of any of the Great Lakes during the winter.  This was my buddy's first show.  It's often overlooked among the monsters directly before and after it, but it was enough to instantly turn that noob into a lifelong fan.

So Niagara....was cold as FUCK. Side note to Caravans comment, my buddy Humpies almost went over the railing...well, under it....He went walkin out there all nonchalantly and nearly slid right under the railing. Needless to say we left there and went directly to the 3rd Street Pub and stayed put til showtime. Froze our asses off on the mere 2 block walk to the venue. Seriously thought I was gonna get frostbite on my face. Caught the w00k flu at that show which at the time was a yet unknown ailment....Made the drive to Cleveland a bitch. I don't remember hitting anything too crazy snow-wise on the drive, just the occasional snow squall as we hit the Eire area. It was brutally cold though.

I spent the night taking it easy up in the nosebleeds. I was pretty wiped after Buffalo. Took 4 days to feel human again. This show was definitely a snoozer compared to Buffalo...but it was still a really good show.

It felt like the college tour (and I wasn't even in college). I remember lots of 20 something year old kids driving their parents nice SUVs. Lots of talk about finals and papers that needed to be written. This was my first taste of New England's elite sub-culture.

I'm sure it was.  You have to think they would have chosen much larger venues had they known they would inherit the Grateful Dead wooks.  Don't forget, Bouncin' from ALO was a suprise college hit at that time, too.  Phish hadn't really hit the Northeast properly in a fall tour in some time.  They crushed in the summer and had huge New Years run shows, but I gotta believe promoters and agents didn't really know what to make of them in a normal tour, and they weren't getting huge offers to play non college arenas in "real" cities.  They were happy to fly under the radar, play live shows, and make great money doing it.  Money that would be well spent to keep things relatively independent.

If you guys didn't listen to Tom's under The Scales with Brad from a few weeks ago, you should go back and check it out. the topic is 11/95 but it's all one big tour, don't ya know?

The tour was booked in the spring.
Also, Phish was invited to open for the Dead in Chicago.

So that might've been a thing.

a 475 mile journey (if you took I-90) from one show to the next is a bitch in the summer.  this is downright insane as i heard there was very nasty weather and traffic along 90.  this saturday night in albany was sold out at just over 16K.  it wasn't the largest venue (mtn. view & landover) but it had the 2nd highest paid attendance (halloween) of the entire fall tour...so far.  the YEM sbd is on the superball house of live phish compilation.  enjoy...and keep those tour stories coming!

Being from upstate we knew better than to travel the thruway to get back to albany....We hopped on 17 and skirted the PA border and then took 88 up albany....which presented its own set of challenges because as some of you know 88 is a bit hilly, and it does get clobbered by lake effect bands....and this night was no exception.....we were goin good til Oneonta, then the snow hit HARD.....doin 30 on the interstate was no fun.....needless to say, we didn't get in til NICU.

Still suffering from the w00k flu, again I took it very easy this night.  Of course everyone raves about this YEM but the things that stick out for me are the build up in Free, Fish's insane drumming in Timber (he sounds like he's falling down a flight of stairs) along with the Landlady tease, and the SLAVE. The crescendo at the end is some classic Fish & Trey interplay.

I was SUPER stoked to have a night off after this one. I was feeling like death, and the break was very needed. We left Albany and drove to my buddies place in Ware to recoup. Chicken noodle soup, a hot shower and more than 3 hrs of sleep did me a world of good.

I never went on tour.  My biggest stretches were two night stands or festivals.  It being a Saturday show, we left NJ early afternoon heading up the NY Thruway/87 drinking the entire trip.   Pretty much doing 30 and watching people spin off the road.  The windshield wipers were just giant clumps of snow with about 2 square feet of window that you could see through.  Made it in okay and were happy to finally be off the road.  It was my first visit to the Knick and after this one, I made every effort to get back up there whenever possible.  Right from the opener(doppler Maze!), I was balls deep in joy.  We also had a friend who had tapers tickets for this one, so within a week or two, I was reliving the night non-stop.  Probably my most listened to tape for a large part of the 90s.

And I was overjoyed to find out PG came back from Superball with a soundboard of the YEM in tow.

a 475 mile journey (if you took I-90) from one show to the next is a bitch in the summer.  this is downright insane as i heard there was very nasty weather and traffic along 90.  this saturday night in albany was sold out at just over 16K.  it wasn't the largest venue (mtn. view & landover) but it had the 2nd highest paid attendance (halloween) of the entire fall tour...so far.  the YEM sbd is on the superball house of live phish compilation.  enjoy...and keep those tour stories coming!

I seem not to have such a thing. Anyone have it handy? Speaking of which, is there a sbd of that 12/2 Tweezer out and about?

If you guys didn't listen to Tom's under The Scales with Brad from a few weeks ago, you should go back and check it out. the topic is 11/95 but it's all one big tour, don't ya know?

The tour was booked in the spring.
Also, Phish was invited to open for the Dead in Chicago.

So that might've been a thing.

Fun listen, great stories esp by Brad.  You could tell Tom had to reel it in more than a few times.  Would love to read a Brad book, oh the stories!  Been digging into this Dec. Run more and more the last few days.  Top shelf!

I hit the two Mullins Center gigs, Knickerbocker and Cumberland County a few days later. Knickerbocker felt important and amazing when it was happening, then again just about every other Phish show felt like that back in the day. Came here to point out the crazy snow storm, and to state the obvious. Cheers!

Enjoying this podcast with Brad. Wasn't aware of (didn't remember) Fish singing Wind Beneath My Wings to Bruce Hampton. Classic!

Coming from just outside of Boston for a show at the Knick is usually just a 3 hour (or possibly even less) drive west on I-90.  On this day, my buddy arrived at my girlfriend's apartment to pick me up before picking up the other 3 guys we were heading out with.  My girlfriend took one look at his Toyota Celica, one look at the sky and the roads, and gave me the keys to her Volvo.  Thank fucking god.

We left very early to get out there.  There was so much snow on the ground that there was one "lane" on the highway.  If you were brave, you could try the left "lane", but there weren't even tire tracks to follow.  It was just white.  Sketchy as fuck.  And the visibility was poor, even driving 30-40mph.  So, the drive out there probably took more like 5-6 hours, with cars sliding off the road every few minutes the whole way, but we were safe in our little Swedish tank.  We got to our hotel, checked in, and headed downtown for the show.

I was like 10th row center.  Our driver was front center with a single ticket from PTBM that was gold.  I was tripping too hard to make any attempt to join him up there at any point in the night, and I was content where we were.  As it was, the place was maybe half, two thirds full due to the weather, despite being sold out.

The doppler Maze was pretty much a perfect way to start the night.  With the new haircut and look, I was getting Clapton visuals off of Trey all night, which were miraculously validated when they went into Crossroads late in the show.  I felt like the band found a crack in the space/time continuum during Free that lasts roughly 5-10 seconds on tape but felt like millenia in the moment.  I LOVED the Beavis and Butthead gags, and they felt very personal after I had previously received the only A my English professor gave out that semester by writing a long paper about how B&B defined my generation.  The YEM...you all know about that.

So we find a whole slew of other friends from Tufts as we're making our way out (back in the days before cell phones how the fuck did we do that?), and we're all just in complete awe of the show.  I have a vivid memory of finally opening the doors to leave the Knick and being reminded that it was SNOWING.  And it had dumped during the whole show, so we walked out to a huge mess of powder.  It was GLORIOUS!  We did snow angels in a foot plus of snow in the parking lots, and played like little children for a long time.

After everyone went to sleep that night, I spent several hours outlining my manifesto to my father of how his actions had negatively affected how my childhood went.  It was super dark, but it was possibly the most cathartic thing I've ever done in my life.

And on the second day, there was nothing else left to do.  What a day that was!

I forget who coined it, pcr3 maybe?  But during the first 20 seconds or so when it shifts from Page's solo spot to Trey's, he starts playing what sounds like a doppler effect that you'd hear as a police car with its siren drove by.  He plays it a couple times and then it resurfaces a minute or two later.  Just another thing to geek out over.

QuotePHISH, MONDAY 12/11/1995
CUMBERLAND COUNTY CIVIC CENTER
Portland, ME
Soundcheck: Dog Log, The Wedge, work on Theme From the Bottom, Funky Bitch, Poor Heart

SET 1: My Friend, My Friend[1] > Ha Ha Ha, Stash, Prince Caspian, Reba[2], Dog Log, Llama, Dog Log, Tube, McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters, Julius > Cavern

SET 2: The Curtain > David Bowie, The Mango Song > Taste That Surrounds, Scent of a Mule, Harry Hood, Suspicious Minds > Hold Your Head Up, Funky Bitch[3]

ENCORE: While My Guitar Gently Weeps[3]

[1] No "Myfe" ending.
[2] No whistling.
[3] Warren Haynes on guitar.

My Friend did not contain the "Myfe" ending. Prince Caspian was preceded by Trey discussing how Portland was supposed to be Elvis?s last show so this song was for his kid, the prince. Reba did not have the whistling ending. The Dog Logs were part of Trey?s announced ?Dog Log? album and were preceded by Trey coaching the audience?s reaction. Dog Log had not been played since August 2, 1993 (218 shows). Tube was played as a thank-you for helping out with the ?album.? Funky Bitch and WMGGW featured Warren Haynes on guitar.

A day off and 268 miles north and east, and we're back.  Just under 9,000 tickets sold this place out.  After reading the notes on this show printed in the Pharner's Almanac, I immediately sought out this tape.  It was pretty widely circulated, so I was able to get it easily.  It became one of my favorites, but I haven't heard this show in years.  I can't wait!

After having been in love with the band for a year and a half, CCCC was my first attended Phish show.  Made it down from the Orono campus with my friend Debbie Brown from Marblehead, a gf of hers and my buddy Mark.  We pulled out of campus  in the late afternoon on a cold, slushy Monday night.  We started smoking weed as soon as we hit the Interstate.  We were in Deb?s Volvo sedan as I nervously watched her handle the ice and slush.  We hit Gritty?s for beer and food pre-show.  Despite the biting cold the crowd was jovial.  Initially we were on the floor to the right of the soundboard.  We opted for seats Page side.  Stash really caught my ear that night in that I had listened to the ALO version a lot since its release.  Trey comes out of his first Portland solo beautifully before modulating into tension/release peaks.  Not a bad version for a first live one.  Trey?s banter about Elvis was funny and interesting because I knew the King had been slated to play CCCC before his untimely death.  Dog Log > Llama > Dog Log was nuts.  I had been playing guitar, learning guitar for at least 4+ years heading into this show, Trey was my new guitar hero, an innovative, psychedelic guitarist who was contemporary.  Seeing Fishman wail on Llama was my show highlight, besides Stash.  Fish had his kit rocking to and fro, he was using all four limbs, killing it.  I couldn?t keep my eye off Fish.  The rest is really a blur, I was up all night previously studying for a final.  Instead of beer I should have been drinking coffee.  Either way I was mostly conscious for set one, napping/micro sleeping in set two.  I do recall McGrupp and guest WH for WMGGW.  After a quick jaunt in the cold it was back in the car to Orono.

I skipped this show in order to make it home and be well rested for my hometown outing. Much needed rest. Plus I had to re-up with my guy and this was the only day we could meet up....so, skipping this show was a no-brainer for me.....hmmm.....lets see......go see a show or re-up 3k blotters....easy decision.

Of all the Dec. shows this tour, to me at least, this was probably the weakest and I have no regrets skipping it.

SET 2: The Curtain > Tweezer -> Timber (Jerry The Mule) -> Tweezer -> Keyboard Army, Halley's Comet -> NICU -> Slave to the Traffic Light

ENCORE: Bold As Love

The jam into Timber included a Slipknot! tease. Bold As Love was played for a fan up front with a sign requesting it. A humorous scene ensued when another fan got excited, as if Trey was referring to his Brother sign. Trey remarked that when fans bring signs, it has to be for a song the band wants to play. This show was officially released as Live Phish 01.

A day off and 300 miles west puts us in Binghampton as we continue to zig zag through the Northeast.  What the hell is this town known for besides killer Phish and Dead shows?  Seriously!?

After a lot of boomy audience recordings, I'm looking forward to cranking this one today.  Is it just me or did the quality of the tapes increase by fall '96?  Maybe they were playing venues that weren't so old and dingy?  Maybe the GD tapers with the expensive gear (Schoeps?)  weren't fully on the scene yet?

Anywho, I suppose a lot of kids jumped on this 4 night run right as finals ended.  Here we go!

That's how many of us were in there.

It was cold as FUCK outside this night. I tried working as long as I could outside but it was just too damn cold. Luckily, my buddy Redbeard had gotten passes so we were able to get inside early and hang before showtime. We caught the soundcheck and couldn't get over how dialed in Paul had the place. Fish sounded HUGE, Page's piano had a sparkle to it, Mike was solid, and Trey's guitar sounded absolutely MONSTEROUS in that tiny arena. We milled around inside the arena after soundcheck, feeling kinda sorry for the poor souls freezing outside.

From the opening notes of Suzy, we knew we were in for it. Charging ahead full steam from the opening notes, Page melted faces in that Suzy...then Llama!?!?! PAGE!....Fairly tame Llama, but snot whippin none the less....Checked in on my group when they started Horn, made sure everyone was dosed up and ready to go.....Foam...just the sheer speed that it started off at, my buddy and I looked at each other and were like "here we go!"....I am fairly certain you can hear me yell WOOOOOO many times during Page's break on the official recording......Page owned it, so calm and calculated and sparkly....the L was starting to take hold....I remember how absolutely quiet it was when Trey started his solo, I miss those days...Trey and Mike kinda doing a lil thing which was neat....Trey holds that note sooooooo long....I gotta pick my face up off the floor. MAKISUPA!!!!!! Nice....Col. Qaddafi wtf Trey? MELT- This is some classic tension and release machine gun Trey. But again, maybe it was because we were slightly Page side from center, Page was KILLING it. Trey was eating it up. At one point Trey had this shit eating grin on his face because of how Page was pushing it.....and the false endings were not actually false endings....they were still playing just VERY QUIETLY...that was surreal to see up close. TELA.....fuckin love seeing this song live.....Taste was a break for us. MSO.....was fun...FRANKENSTEIN....Loved it at the time. Thought it was amazing. Page's synth sounded like it was from outer space, and he was just gettin down on it. Finally...we can RELAX.

The L started kickin our asses at setbreak. Stepped out for some fresh air, froze, and came back in only to find my buddy missing. Kinda started freaking out a tad.....

Chess move time.....and WTF.....WTF is he doing on the stage!?!? My acid riddled brain couldn't grasp what my eyes were seeing. Crazy, so my buddy gets to do the chess move. Neat. Now the only reason I say you can hear me on the official release is because that girl you hear yelling "GO DAN!" was his girlfriend Julie.....she was 2 seats away from me....so. THE CURTAIN.....oh, I had a regret....eating too many.....was way too strong....I'm too close....fawk I'm going mad.......TWEEZER....remember thinking how fitting because of the outside conditions....god, Mike is beating me over the head with his thumb hits. Here we go, underwater time....whoa, we aren't going there...Page gets a chance to own it before Trey stomps in....WHOA that was a slam into Timber....now we are gettin down....this groove is SINISTER....again Page shines, Trey looked like an evil nerd while he was adding texture to the mix....ok, my thoughts are spiraling out of control...make it st.....OH FUCK BACK TO TWEEZER!?!?!.. :rawk:..I literally saw people picking their face up from the floor at that move....ok, now they are just fuckin with us....my mind starts going "not CMAC again"... phew...ok we can catch our breath....Keyboard Army was neat...HALLEYS! Man this has an awesome stride to it. Trey is rockin out. That is a great theme he hits around the 6min mark....now WTF IS HAPPENING....   ...I'm scared...this is  ......NICU WTF!?!? This is sick...back to that theme, now they're all in on it....but PAGE.....man he's owning this night.....and it slowly melts, like my brain, into SLAVE! wow...damn....wtf, did they drink the tap water? wtf did we do to deserve THIS....

Funny that you know Bingham Dan/Mammy Dan.  He's my homie.  Anyway, this was a great show in a week of great shows.  I haven't been keep up with these show reviews/recollections, but I have been listening to all of them on their respective dates, so there's that.  I think the fact that Page chose this show as the first LP release pretty much indicates that the band agrees that this show is fire.  Still holds up 25 years later and is one of my favorites from the tour and near the top of all time shows for sure.

SET 2: Tweezer Reprise > Runaway Jim > It's Ice > Bathtub Gin -> Rotation Jam -> Mallory[2] > Also Sprach Zarathustra > David Bowie, Sweet Adeline

ENCORE: Good Times Bad Times -> Tweezer Reprise

[1] Oom Pa Pa, Simpsons and All Fall Down signals.
[2] Debut.

Trey teased Lazy (Deep Purple) in Chalk Dust. Possum included Oom Pa Pa, Simpsons and All Fall Down signals and a Voodoo Child tease from Trey. Trey mentioned that he saw his first concert (Jethro Tull) in this very venue. Mallory debuted at this show.

180 miles south and we're in Philly.  After last night, what could they possible still have left in the tank.  Plenty!  On paper, this looks like a super fun time, but in a completely different way than the previous night.  18,645 paid $22.50 to find out.  That's more tickets than Halloween or MSG a few weeks later.  It was most likely the highest grossing show of fall tour and in Trey's "home" venue no less.  Dude had to be riding high for this show.

So...this right here is a prime example of why these guys were such a force of cosmic magnitude....The very next night after a barn burner, we get treated to this. Just look at that opening sequence. From a nearly continuous second set the night before, they just kept it going. Energy was super high in the building. We were straight back, one section up from the rail to the floor. Not an ideal spot for viewing, but an AWESOME spot in the Spectrum sound-wise. Made friends with our neighbors who were from Arizona and shared many bowls with together.

The Chalkdust > Hood > Wilson > Maze was just NUTS. Trey and Page were just taking turns bitch slapping us all. They were locked together as one right from the get go, carrying the singularity forward to this night. Yeah, we had just had the doppler Maze a mere 6 days prior, but in my mind this one was just way more locked. Listen to Mike take the theme Trey presents and just mutate it into the some low end evilness as Trey just goes OFF firing round after round of machine gun licks before screaming at the top of the mountain and throwing us down to the depths below.....we literally had to catch our breath after this one.....but no, Ha Ha Ha, the joke is on us...My buddy Slow made the comment that this first set was like being tied to the bumper of a car and sent down the highway. I couldn't agree more.

Set 2....That Tweeprize to close out what felt like a continuation from the second set of Binghamton to here.....it really did just feel like 12/14 set 2 > 12/15 set 1 was a continuous thought. Jim was Jim...standard fare.....Ice....wtf....the middle section had us jaw open in awe. Wtf is going on here?!?! They ALMOST wanted to do Rock N Roll Part 2.....The Gin was good, nothing mind blowing. We took the Fishman joint to the bathroom and made sure we flushed....The Bowie cemented the thought that Fishman is just one of the greatest rock drummers alive. His snare work had me shaking in my boots. I remember looking at Slow when they did the breakdown and he was dancing like an angry yetti at a buffet.....I hadn't laughed that hard in a while.....

We left after Adeline to get a head start on the crazy drive ahead of us.....10 hrs of some of the most sketchy driving we encountered the entire winter.....you'll see......

Had a good time at this show with Igbo and our girlfriends. Mine was pregnant at the time. We were straight back, above Mar's seats. Raging show. This one gets put down as bottom of the barrel for December '95 but 3.0 ain't got nothing on this shit.

We're almost there!  We just have to go 400 miles north after going 200 miles south the previous day...in winter...in the mountains..when the days are at their shortest.

One of the greatest tours in Phish history has pulled into its final stop.  An 8,500 seat arena in Lake Placid, New York.  I'm sure the thought was for the end of this tour to be a "hometown" 2 night stand, but Lake Placid?  In a tour of odd stops, this one fits perfectly in its oddness.  I wonder how many of the towns/venues on this tour would never be visited by Phish again?  At that time, it was absolutely unheard of for any band, let alone an unknown one, to be able to nearly sell out 7 arena shows in the state of New York and 4 arena shows in the state of Massachusetts in a month!  They were truly in a unique moment in time that wouldn't last.

In '96 the tours would be different as would the sound.  Enjoy this historical run!

Nice job anthrax!  Its been fun re-listening to these shows, I dl?d the Dec. 95 torrent at etree.  The only show I upgraded was 12/11.  Keep it going when the 95 NYE run starts.  Read through the tour archives at phish.com last night for added insight.  They definitely raked in some ca$h this Run as well.

The P.A. went out during Rift, causing some giggles when Page sang ?and silence contagious in moments like these.? Wilson included a Johnny B. Goode tease. During Tweezer, Mike played part of what would become the Bass Jam on the following evening. I Didn't Know featured Fish on trombone. Trey sang the verses of Fee through a megaphone. The sounedcheck's Poor Heart was the slow version. Demand was teased before The Old Home Place.

We finally made it to the end of an incredible year for the band and fans alike!

The show marks the beginning of a lot of things.  Most noticeably, this was the first true New Year's Run, where the band acknowledged that a majority of fans would be attending all four shows.  It was the first no repeat New Years Run, a tradition that would continue until today, and it tried to eliminate some of the sketchy late December winter travel that we've heard so much about.  In addition to increasing profits, 2 two night runs would make things a lot easier than the previous years for the crew as well as the fans, and it would lay the template for big destination runs to come.  Once I really started to getting into the scene in '95 & '96, it was obvious there were two destinations you could make that would give you a fantastic summary of where the band was at that time.  These 2 were the end of summer festival and the New Year's Run.

Two night runs weren't super common in 1995, and 3 night runs were almost unheard of.  As the band's management and promoters started to figure out what they had in terms of a fanbase, things slowly started to change.  At this point, we were only a few months away from two extremely newsworthy events in a 4 night run at Red Rocks and the Clifford Ball.  And in a few years time, the New Years Run would almost exclusively become a one stop 4 night arena run, which is a run that almost no other band at that time could pull off.  And now we have regular destinations in Mexico, Vegas, and Dicks.  We have a banner with the number 13 hanging in MSG, and we have tours with more 2 and 3 night runs than single shows.

Before we get too ahead of ourselves, we have to talk about The Centrum.  Being a winter tour stop nearly 1,000 miles away from where I was living, it became my white whale of a venue.  12/31/93, 12/29/95, and the Thanksgiving runs of '97 and '98 became legendary shows that just were just too difficult for me to attend.  The band even chose The Centrum on their completely sold out February '03 reunion tour, when they could have sold out a much bigger place.  They obviously loved playing there, and as a fanatic, I had to cross this one off my list.

When the opportunity presented itself in 2010 to do a Centrum/MSG run, not even 1,000 miles of driving and a blizzard would keep me away!  Leaving solo on Christmas night after a day of heavy eating, I recall driving until I had to catch a few winks in the backseat of my car at a rest area in Western Ohio, hitting a patch of black ice on an overpass and somehow miraculously avoiding an accident, and pushing on all day until I was forced off the road near Albany due to deterioriating weather conditions.  I was lucky to find a motel with vacancy near the highway, and I recall waking up  on the 27th to my car being buried under 2.5 feet of snow in the back of an unplowed parking lot.  This is not a 2010 thread, but I risked my life as an adult with a house and a wife to get to the Centrum because of these fucking runs!  And it all starts right now!   :beers: :beers:

Although the Centrum is less than an hours drive from my parents house, we booked a room 5 minutes up the highway. This would be my brother Matt?s first New Years run. We also dragged along a HS friend of my then girlfriend. Can?t remember why he was in Boston, but he had come up from Alabama, and I was psyched to drag him into our scene. The rest of the crew arrived from CT, NY, and DC. The lots were a typical New England party scene. Almost everyone we talked to were going to most of the shows. This band was coming in hot and everyone knew it.
We took in the first show pages side. Right from the drop they pushed the pedal down. The Timber and the Tweezer were the stand outs as I remember. And the silent jam was pretty funny. Rift was a song that just never worked out  right in 95. Fitting it gets fucked up during this run. A great start to the run though I was sad to see tweezer crossed off the list so early. Little did I know it would make zero difference in the long run

We took up residence in a portal pages side center. Stuffed a handful of mushrooms in my mouth and proceeded to slowly melt through the first set. By the time Stash started up I was already going down a dark path, the song just pushed me into one of those horrible psychedelic pits. I was thrilled when the music stopped and I was able to reassemble some of what had fallen apart.
By the time Makisupa started up I had righted the ship and surrendered to the flow. I vividly remember my friend Justin loosing his shit and shaking me. Screaming ?Real Me? in my face as the segue was becoming clear. I had no idea it was a Who song, I was just loving his enthusiasm. Soon the rest of the room was screaming just as loudly as the song took off proper. The return back to bathtub is just sublime. I think everyone was surprised when they pulled it off so cleanly. What a great night. This runaway train was picking up speed. Off to New York

My first time at MSG for a concert (certainly saw many a Ranger game there previously).  We ended up having a couple of extra tickets.  Needless to say, it was not a problem getting rid of them.  My memory is a bit hazy on this one, although I remember hitting the Peculiar Pub before the show as a couple in our group lived across the street as they were attending NYU at the time.  As far as the show goes, we were way back in the 300s, so it was a Kuroda fest.  I remember being so fired up for the Kung in the middle of Ice and the "Stand Up" getting a huge response from the crowd.  The Auld Lang Syne tease in YaMar was certainly an instant classic and really the only other memory I have was the Hood.  My favorite  :phish: tune and quite possibly my favorite version.  Unfortunately, that's about all I remember from that night.  Interestingly enough, I had kind of taken a large sabbatical from Phish around the time of 2.0.  They just weren't playing tight anymore and I really soured on them and stopped listening to Phish for years.  I distinctly remember listening the Hood from this show while being on medical leave from work after surgery back in 2007 and that completely revitalized my love for the Phish and that's what led me to discover the greatest place on the internet and I've been wasting my time here ever since.  :beers:

[1] No whistling.
[2] Narration discussed how Phish makes time in the Phish Time Factory.
[3] Phish debut; Tom Marshall on vocals.
[4] Unfinished.

Reba did not have the whistling ending. The narration in Mockingbird discussed how Phish makes time in the Gamehendge Time Laboratory, which set up the New Year?s Eve stunt. The Phish debut of Shine featured Tom Marshall on vocals. Trey teased Shine in Runaway Jim. Mike's Song contained a Dave's Energy Guide tease from Page. The second set ended with a Digital Delay Loop Jam out of Mike?s, and the third set opened with the Phish Time Factory machine. All four band members dressed as scientists playing with synths while lights flashed and Van de Graaff generators zapped. Fish was lifted up in a bed as Father Time and was reborn as the Baby New Year. Weekapaug featured Auld Lang Syne, Dreaming (Blondie), and Spooky teases and was unfinished. This was the first performance of Sanity since June 24, 1994 (147 shows). This show was officially released as New Year's Eve 1995 - Live at Madison Square Garden.
