Question:
If you could only see 1 phish show a year, which would it be?
Option 1: Festival
votes: 15
Option 2: Halloween
votes: 12
Option 3: New Years
votes: 17
Option 4: Local Show
votes: 5
i'd have to go with halloween. you get an entire set of songs that will never be played again, minus 1 or 2. that's enough to make halloween the most important show of the year imo.
Isn't a festival more than one show?
maybe it's partly because I'm going to halloween this year and definitely not going to new years....but I agree with you.
Where's the option for 'the closest and most affordable one'.
Halloween... Though NYE is a close second.

I hear ya, last fall's MSG run was my first and that place does rage, even if the demographic of fans leaves much to be desired......especially after a year+ of west coast shows.

I chose a festival. I like the day time relaxing and the friendliness I have experienced. I have not been to a Halloween show yet, so this could change after this year, but I like the camping, hanging out and meeting a lot of people. Shows can be too much hustle and bustle at times.
chose NYE probably because i'm biased from seeing one. this may change after halloween this year and seein what the crowd/show are like, but i'll never forget how pumped up everyone was on 12/31, and the balloons dropping at midnight was something i'll certainly never forget!

Yeah I remember it vividly from my '03 NYE. I remember at one point not being able to see the band there were so many balloons. The hugs, high fives, etc made for a great night. Jungle Boogie was f'ing sweet too. :-D
well after seeing one halloween (98) & three nye's (96, 97, 09), i'm gonna go with NYE.
ya the crowd being dressed up is fun(ny?) i guess, but the musical costume doesnt do that much for me.
especially with what they're prolly gonna be playing these days. :tte:
dont get me wrong, its cool.. but i'd rather see them slaughter 3 sets of phish songs with (maybe) just a couple covers.
better energy on new years.
NYE

Pretty hard question for me, lacking much frame of reference as I have never seen a Halloween nor NYE nor festival (Bonnaroo doesn't count).

TOTALLY THIS!
I have already starting dreaming about a summer festival next year, really hope it happens.
poll should be called "which phish special event havent you seen before?" or "what phish special event are you seeing next?"
because i find it really, really, REALLY hard to believe that so many people would choose halloween if their first wasnt right around the corner.
never been to any, but if I had to choose, NYE. what better time to see a show and party down!
There's no "all of them" option? :? :? :?
Does. Not. Compute.

Really depends on the festival.....but that is what i would prolly go with.....I mean nothing can really hold a candle to something like the wheel or the went...8 was really the best of both worlds....when so many heads converge to create an around the clock village, it rules....so I guess the real toss up for me would be cypress vs. 8..... the answer is obvious, but 8 was still freaking incredible.....

yep. the only halloween i have seen was 8. and the only NYE i have seen was cypress.
been to one other festival, the ball.
the ball was pure magic because i was 18 and free, really free, for the first time ever.
cypress was other-worldly because i knew i was getting the fuck down while the rest of the world panicked as we rang in the new millenium......epic.
8 was totally different as i flew, stayed in a resort, and phish threw the classiest, most easy vibing, utterly beautiful, professional rock concert ever.
so, what was my point? i forget, but i guess my answer should be changed to festival cause ive been to the first, the NYE, and the halloween ones.
the went will never be the ball, MSG will never be cypress, and the omni will never be 8.
^ truth
can i change my vote? im ready for MSG! put in my request, here goes nothing
I voted Halloween because I love the whole concept of the musical costume. It's one of the greatest things Phish has ever done.
And I've been to some epic shows in all three categories. NYE 93, 95, 97, 99. Halloween 95, 98, 2009. Ball, Cypress, 8.
Cypress doesn't count, though. It can't. I'd take that over any show by anyone any time. But that's me.
who wouldnt?
on your average year, id certainly take the festival, and even more so if theyre gonna do a 3-day festival like 8. over nye, over halloween.
on your same average year, nye is my favorite singled-out show. what can i say? 3 sets. indoors. balloons. gags. its all fun, all phish, usually killer.
the problem w. halloween is that it really just depends on what they cover. i prefer 95, 96, and 98 (10/31 and 11/2) to 94 and 09.
i find it REALLY hard to believe that so many people on this forum would put one set of their only show of the year to chance on what the band decides to cover.

Well, it is a bit of a toss up, and it could be totally awesome, or blow, but I think a lot of us are risk takers, and like to gamble!

if u answered 10/31 over nye, you're doing it wrong.
I have loved every musical costume. It's not a "risk" to me not knowing what they'll play. I honestly believe that 10/31/09 set II was the most focused playing we heard all year from Phish. I wouldn't trade that set for anything, including a New Years gag.

White Album = awesome
Quadraohenia = awesome
Remain in Light = awesome
Loaded = awesome
Exile = awesome
You may not all agree, but as far as I'm concerned, there is no "risk" involved.

I'd put Loaded in the super awesome category as well.

I was at all of those shows and I would probably rate them as such:
1. White Album
2. Exile
3. Quadrophenia
4. Loaded
5. Remain in Light
Call me insane, but that's my opinion...And that is based on actual show experience (and all that entails) based on versus purely listening back to them at a later time.....I can say that I listen to Exile and Loaded (phish versions) more then any of the other ones by a longshot....It also has a lot to do with the fact that Loaded, Quadrophenia and Exile were huge records for me before Remain in Light even came out, so maybe it's an age thing....

hey, different strokes for different folks, i guess.
but lets come back to this same discussion on 01/02/11.
k? :-D
festival > NYE > Halloween > local show
the festival is phish's purest and strongest artistic expression. nothing beats that vibe.
to be fair my only festival experiences are Coventry and 8.
