Title: All Things COMIC BOOKS
Post by: mistercharlie on February 03, 2011, 08:33:41 PM
So it was stated in another that we need a Comic Book thread, and I happen to agree. There's always something to talk about comic book-wise.

I just finished reading Batman: The Long Halloween. I read the whole thing in a single sitting today. I hadn't read it since it came out 13 years ago and I liked it a hell of a lot better now than I did back then. I have the other two Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale Batman books coming to me via my local public library.

And to start off the thread, here's a question:

Marvel or DC?

I'm a DC dude myself, you'll always find me in either a Phish shirt, a Batman shirt or my Green Lantern shirt (the one Green Lantern shirt gets worn more than all my Batman shirts combined.).

The Walking Dead is the only comic book I've ever read. I love the shit out of it. Other than that, I do have a few issues of this weird comic book concerning Boba Fett that came free with some action figure or something that I bought as a kid.

i loved Stray Toasters, an epically weird four issue series from the mid- '80s, in my very brief days collecting a very few comics:

i also read Cerebus The Aardvark for many years, until the creator, Dave Sim, went completely batshit insane and began publishing longer and longer, more and more religiously and misogynistically insane, laughably argued essays in place of the actual comic. which story turned to crap, too. impressive, though, that he began doing it in the late '70s, when almost no one was making independent comics, and said he'd keep doing it for 300 issues. which he did. though, yeah, a good 120 of those issues sucked.

but for a long time it was a very smart, very funny, beautifully drawn comic.

there was a great wolverine parody character for a few issues, until marvel threatened to sue.

Really? I always saw it as being the other way around. DC is full of dark and gritty detective stories and has a more intellectual cast of characters. Marvel is more about flashy, colorful characters and has easy to follow stories that move at a pace that anyone can comprehend.  As a kid I loved Marvel, and barely read DC. Then as I got older I read more and more DC and let Marvel fall to the wayside.

The last time I read a comic book I was 14. Coincidentally, around the same time I discovered porn. So basically, I'm talking out my ass.

I did like the DC graphic novels a lot.

I read DC (Batman, especially) as a kid but I was never a big comic book type.

Until recently.

I'd kept up, occasionally with things like Frank Miller's Dark Night Returns and DK2 and whatnot. Then,  couple years ago, I read The Watchmen and loved it. In the past year I've become addicted to Walking Dead.

I've also read:
The Preacher
Y: the Last Man
Some X-Men
Scott Pilgrim
a few other random things that I don't recall
and now I'm reading Ex Machina.

Lotta stuff is queued up behind that too.

So, yeah, I now love comics.

So here is my question:
What series should I start reading?  Is there one that has recently started, or continued in a way that I could get caught up relatively easily?

I miss the days of hitting the comic book store from my days as a kid.  We had one I could walk/ride my bike to and i loved just going through and checking out all the different comics.

So basically, recommendations of a series that I could jump into with relative ease that would offer a good story?

I don't know of any books that are at a good jumping on point right now... but most every book is avaliable in Trade Paperback form, which is a collection of  between 6-12 issues, and you can catch up with them pretty quickly.

Some good TPB's to pick up would be:

The Walking Dead
Fables
Ex-Machina (Series is over and complete)
Y: The Last Man Standing (Series is over and complete)
Preacher (Series is over and complete)
100 Bullets (Series is over and complete)
The Boys

Any Batman TPB's by Frank Miller or Jeph Loeb.

I'd say marvel zombies. Very easy to get into and a blast to read. Haven't read the Walking Dead series yet. I might if the show starts to suck balls.

But i just read at Barnes & Noble Muhamad Alli Vs. Superman.....Thought it would of been so much cooler.

I liked the first Trade Paperback for Fables.  About midway through the second one, I got tired of it, however.

A little too "gimmicky" for me.

If you find you're looking for something a little grittier after fables, I'd suggest:

It's a comic noir, with a great premise.  Basically, the comic is about people who have fallen on hard times because of the actions of others.  As they are struggling, a "government" man shows up with a dossier showing proof of exactly who harmed them and how their actions caused the characters downfall.  Then the G-man hands the character a brief case with an untraceable handgun and 100 untraceable bullets.  The G-Man then explains that no harm will befall the character if they are to shoot the person in the dossier.  The character can choose to do whatever they want.

The comic then takes off from there.  The simple premise starts to get really interesting and more complicated as the series goes on.

It's pretty awesome, honestly.

I started reading comics again in college. There was a comic book shop next to the used record place I went to.
I started off reading Marvel, especially X-Men and Wolverine. I have the original '82 series and most of the v2 run. I gave up on Marvel when the x-men split up into many factions and there were about 15 series running concurrently. I also collected spiderman for a while, when Todd Macfarlane was drawing it. Good stuff.

I got into Batman years before, when the Dark Knight Returns came out. that's what got me into reading comics in the first place. I'm a huge fan of the elseworlds series, which puts Batman in different periods of history. They've lost me in the last few years, with the whole 'death of Batman' thing. I still read the non-canon one-shot stuff, it's very gritty and always interesting.

My current recommendations:

Completed Series:
100 Bullets
Y: the last man
BONE, by Jeff Smith
Sandman and associated comics
The Watchmen, and pretty much anything by Alan Moore
Ex Machina
Transmetropolitan
The Maxx, by Sam Kieth
Sin City, by Frank Miller
Kick Ass (I)

Ongoing Series:
The Stand (Comic book adaptation of Stephen King's novel)
Fables
DMZ
Chew
Proof
The Goon
Anything Hellboy or BPRD
I, Zombie
House of Mystery (a distant tie-in to Sandman)
Hack/Slash
Kick Ass (II)

If you liked the long Halloween (I have the original comics of those. amazing artwork), you need to read Catwoman: When in Rome and Batman: Dark Victory. Both of those series continue the story where Long Halloween left off.

well.  A long time ago our uncle gave up his entire collection to me and my brother.  We had split them down the middle.  Most were just run of the mill xmen, spiderman, batman... stuff like that.  There were some obscure ones in there though.  There were a good bit of ElfQuest.  Which I took.  Anyways... they had been in this filing cabinet forever down in the basement.  I guess not long ago he came to take his.  I was poking around down there yesterday and I noticed that every single one was gone.  He took all of them :samurai:

Shoreline---How good is the Last Man?  I'm thinking about picking it up, but haven't had much motivation to.  The size of the series is rather intimidating...

In other news, I reread the first half of "The Kindly Ones" story arc of "The Sandman".

Fuck the comic never gets old.  I've probably read it at least 5 times.

I really liked that series. The writing is superb, and as RJ said there wasn't too much fluff, and it didn't get too preachy. I'd recommend it. I'm a big Brian K. Vaughan fan.

Can't go wrong with the Sandman. Neil Gaiman's stories are worth re-reading again and again. He created a wonderful universe.

Someone just lent me the first TPB of the Mice Templar. Anyone ever read any of that series?

I read the first five Trade paperbacks of the Last Man.

It's addictive but I disagree about it not being fluff.  I think it's incredibly 2 dimensional, but that's not to say I don't enjoy it.  I wouldn't have read all five Trades today if that was true.

I really like it, and can hardly wait to read more of it.

It would make an awesome action flick that's for sure.  Thanks for the suggestion.

You could say the overall series is nothing but fluff if you want every little arc to be 100% about reaching the end point. But what I meant by not a lot of fluff is that the various arcs rarely lower the quality of the book even if they don't steadily advance the overall narrative.

I agree about the film idea.

Every 'Crisis' series that DC publishes is awesome, but yes the broad scope of every book that tie's-in with them is overwhelming. Infinite Earths was great and then the newer Infinite Crisis is almost as good if not equal to the original.

I LOVED 52. It followed a bunch of c-list characters and did a great job with it. And the 'Death' of Bruce Wayne was a little off, but Battle For The Cowl was very well done. Tony S. Daniel wrote and drew some great stories in that arc.

They missed that Wolverine's true ability is his healing factor but I guess the claws are pretty damn cool.

Looks pretty bad-ass, although I expect him to shout 'Get Over Here!' and then hurl a roped spear at someone. (I'm saying he reminds me of Scorpion from MK)

good observation. i'll try and post a more recent pic to show you i feel the same way about the previous look.
this was the major letdown in the styles provided for characters in the game. basically a disease brought on by the popularity of WoW.
a large majority of the styles were more "fantasy" then "superheroy".
though, this was my "druid" style phase, and i was sorta going for that look on purpose--without the huge shoulder armor though probably, which i've since dropped.

not to crossover too much from the "video game" thread, but DCUO was a serious blast for awhile. the premise was fantastic, and really the perfect Escape for a bum like me with no real life. it was a great chance to finally live out some of the dreams i had as a kid reading comic books. good thing it wasnt MARVEL or i probably would never stop playing, lol.

in all honesty after putting in prob close to 500 hours my recommendation would be to pick this game up in a year once theyve added a ton more content and ironed out all the bugs. being a MMO it only grows with time. i built a league (guild) of 150 members and had a blast, but once i maxed out on all the content it got sorta stale and really the only thing to do was redo the same stuff over and over again except once new stuff came out with monthly updates. seeing as the game isnt sellable, its permanently linked to one account, i might re-subscribe in a year and enjoy what i missed, but for now its a wrap.

To tell the truth I've never played an MMO but this one REALLY has me wanting to play it.

it has its merits, though not so much in the traditional MMO sense. it was the 1st real MMO i ever comitted to playing. as a MMO i think one of its major flaws is that the MMO aspects are more of a handicap than a help. in other words the " massivemultiplayer" aspect of the game isnt really the fun part, imo. the fun part is more of the experience you get from your own play, even when in groups. despite running probably the largest league/guild on PS3--seriously, 150 active members-- it never felt like much of deeper experience because of our league's activity. it more felt like we were required to have such a large league in order to progress. i guess im slightly bitter since we have since disbanded our league after some jealous officers formed a coup and ruined everything, but i dunno... PS3 MMOers have a lot to learn compared to PC vets of the genre.
Outside of the differences in the platform communities though and the forced nature of playing with experienced groups, i personally don't feel the game ever really delivered on its tag line promise of :" THE NEXT LEGEND IS YOU"
this gets back to what i think we were originally talking about as Comic Book geeks wanting to fulfill some sort of escapist fantasy.
bottom line is after maxing out my character as one of the highest geared players on my server i still just felt like another carbon copy of the other heros online. There just wasnt enough customization, especially in the way of your powers.
to compound that issue many of the character classes emaphasize weaknesses over attributes.
bottom line is there was just not enough Epicness invloved.
add to that my hatred of all things DC, and the fact that they took the blandest form of DC style to put into the game.
though there are defintely some wonderful design things going on. mostly because of Jim Lee.
i grew up worshiping at the temple of Jim Lee. also, seeing as he really 'came up' working for Marvel , this helped me deal with my DC biases.

....ramble, ramble...

I hope it stays true to the Frank Miller original, and then I hope it's shortly followed by The Long Halloween.

They've said that the original is so cinematic that there is absolutely no need to change anything in it.  I'd expect to be delightfully surprised.

unfortunately im really thinking this looks like another crap attempt at a xmen movie. from what im seeing its yet another horrible bastardization of the classic xmen history. i dunno what comics  theyve written in the last few decades, but i dont understand why they totally re-write the original storylines.

I watched the animated "Under The Red Hood" movie on netflix recently. it was changed from the book but mostly in ways to allow it to standalone. I thought it was pretty good overall. and it was def. not for young kids.

That gives me high hopes for Year One...

Yes I do.

Actually, I went to my local comic book store to try and grab them, and the store is gone. It was the place I had bought comics for the past 20-25 years.

Might I also suggest that you try the new Justice League #1. Jim Lee & Geoff Johns make it one of the highlights of the reboot. I am also really looking forward to the new Green Lantern, which comes out on Wednesday.

its aaiight. not bad, better than any other Marvel cartoon series i can recall.
I prefer the wolverine one, and its pretty true to the old Japan storylines from his books as far as i can remember.

I tried watching the Wolverine one and thought it did a pretty good job of sticking with the Japan storylines also, however I'm just not a fan of that 'anime' style of cartoon. Give me the old Batman The Animated Adventures any day.

yup, but honestly there havent been any real good marvel cartoons ever, so what you got to lose? the only american marvel series you'll get will be geared to 10 year olds and look like crap.

btw, if your seriously a comic book collector, now is the time to buy. its a buyers market just like all collectibles these days.
i went online to see how much my best books were worth and was blown away. i have a 4 part graphic novel series that was critically acclaimed i bought back around '90 that i paid probably $100 for, 4 times the cover price. they are now selling for $3.25 a copy.

Yeah I'm workin on filling my Batman gaps from around issue 300-current and saw that prices are still fairly low for those (I did see some 300-400 range issues that were good deals though). Getting anything pre-200 is still way up there, but early Batman issues are always going to have a steep price

yeah, i sold most of my really old stuff ages ago. it was hard to resist the $ when i started puffing and stuff.
though, i really wish i still had all my original Xmen. i will always regard Chris Claremont's stuff as the best writing in comics. hopefully someday i can DL digital copies at least.

i enjoyed the new XMEN series premiere last night on G4. the art style is the best of the 3 by far. wolverine actually looks like wolverine compared to the solo series, and the chicks all have big hoohahs like typical marvel.
i think the only thing that i'm not digging about these series being "anime" is that all the plots are about events that take them to Japan.
its alright, but just seems a bit narrow minded. anyway, still the coolest xmen cartoon ive ever seen, thats enough for me.

ALSO, if you hadnt heard there is a AKIRA live action movie in the works. not sure how i feel about this since it is the prototypical anime flick that really sets the standard. changing it into live action just seems like it will water it down.

i enjoyed the new XMEN series premiere last night on G4. the art style is the best of the 3 by far. wolverine actually looks like wolverine compared to the solo series, and the chicks all have big hoohahs like typical marvel.
i think the only thing that i'm not digging about these series being "anime" is that all the plots are about events that take them to Japan.
its alright, but just seems a bit narrow minded. anyway, still the coolest xmen cartoon ive ever seen, thats enough for me.

ALSO, if you hadnt heard there is a AKIRA live action movie in the works. not sure how i feel about this since it is the prototypical anime flick that really sets the standard. changing it into live action just seems like it will water it down.

I'll have to check out the X-Men show, I like the others on G4. An AKIRA live action film can go downhill quick they better do it right.

its the best one yet "art wise", imo.
new eps. -friday nights 11pm est.

For Batman Fans -

a doctor (and comics fan) worked up a medical history on Bruce Wayne. Pretty good stuff.

http://ordinary-gentlemen.com/blog/2011/11/14/patient-bw-dob-2161971/

QuoteWhat would Bruce Wayne's medical file look like? I mean, sure, Alfred actually does quite a bit, but I'm sure there are things that are beyond his abilities. And given Batman's occupation, it's inevitable that he's going to end up in the hospital from time to time (albeit he certainly has the money to hush up anybody he needs to).

"Russell Saunders" is a pediatrician who decided to take up the challenge, and wrote this brilliant piece for The League of Ordinary Gentlemen. It's a record of Bruce Wayne's visits to GCGH (Gotham City General Hospital), with actual medical terminology and a pretty good estimation of what a doctor would imagine when confronted with all of these serious injuries paired with Wayne's flimsy excuses for them. (He tells the doctor he takes part in a mixed martial arts club, and refuses to wear protective headgear despite frequent encouragement to do so.)

I've been somewhat obsessed with Batman and comic books lately. Well, I guess I've always been somewhat obsessed, but I've been on a HUGE Batman/comic kick as of late.

I watched two animated movies (twice) this past weekend, Under the Red Hood and Year One. Both were fantastic, especially Red Hood. It even received a rare 'Extremely Fresh' score with an average of a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

I can't wait for another one of these animated films to be released. Any of you dudes know of when they're going to release the next one?

I also watch Gotham Knight last night, which wasn't nearly as good, imo. On deck, I have Mask of the Phantasm, Return of the Joker, Mystery of the Batwoman, as well as the entire animated television series. I already get the feeling that none of these will be nearly as good as the first two I mentioned. Those were more aimed at an adult audience, whereas I get the feeling these are more "child-friendly."

You should watch Justice League Doom, it's the newest DC animated movie and it centers around Batman. Also play both Arkham Asylum ans Arkham City, those are two of the best games made in the past few years.

Also there's a Batman/Superman movie based on the initial run of the Batman/Superman comics.

lol, go read what I just posted in the video games thread. Pulled an all-nighter.

And yeah, I grabbed just League Doom last week, but have yet to watch it. I think I'm about to watch it as my reward/come down from that ridiculously good game I just beat.

Justice League Doom is pretty good.

But you wanna talk about Batman kicks?

I just finished reading an unquantifiable volume of Batman arcs including Knightfall, A Death In the Family, and the whole battle for the cowl up through New 52 across all of the related books. Throw in the huge pile of one shots that I'm working through (and the fact that Batman titles are about half of what I'm getting monthly at the comic shop these days) I'm ingesting a lot of Batman.

Making up for lost time, I guess.

Batman is awesome.

My car has a Batman license plate cover on it, half of my pajama pants are batman-related (the other half being Simpsons related), and I have two filing cabinets in my office/smoke room filled with nothing but Batman comics and those aren't even all of my Batman books. I have a few long boxes in the closet also full of Batman.

There's also a Batman Arkham City spin-off game for the iPad, it's not as good as the real game, but it's fun none the less.

Nice. I've always loved Batman, and have 100+ comics, which I literally just now reminded myself of those as I type this, lol.

Anyway, like I said, Batman has always been my favorite comic book character/super hero by a long shot, but as of late, I have really been on a huge kick. And that's funny you mentioned A Death in the Family, RJ. I saw it at Hastings last night alongside Under the Red Hood, and I was so close to buying ADITF, but decided against it, only to get home and realize that I totally should've bought it. So I turned around and went back to Hastings, only to find out that they had closed shortly after I left. Definitely gonna go back and snag it this afternoon...

Speaking of Hastings, they actually just started carrying comics and graphic novels again within the last year or so. They are stacked, too. i could spend at least a few hours in there just trying to pick a few Batman titles. They also have at least 12-15 different Batman graphic novels. They're just a bit pricey, just like everything else there. Used seasons of The Simpsons are $20 (lol), and I scored all 10 of my Simpsons boxes for no more than $10 a pop at pawn shops, etc.

Anyway, back on topic..... Batman is awesome.

don't think i mentioned it before, but if you have Netflix, check out the "Astonishing X-Men" 'motion-comic' miniseries.
its a bunch of super short episodes that are done in the motion comic style, but the writing and artwork is Phenominal.
its probably on the web somewhere as well, but i found it on 'flix.

Yep, 'Batman on Ice' was the low point in Batman's Hollywood adventure. The Adam West Batman movie was less cheesy and it was written to be cheesy.

I was also never a fan of the Batgirl character in general, not just in this movie.

Yup.

That's what the dude that was working near the comic book section said. I take my little brother in there all the time to buy the dollar comics, and he's always giving us advice on what to read. The dude knows his comics, that's for sure.

Batman is by FAR my favorite superhero, and I'm not sure how 'into' The Avengers I am. It was more of a gift to my little brother. He's crazy about The Avengers right meow, and has been buying the 99 cent comic books left and right, so I figured he would freak over this, so I bought it. He's only 12, so all he can afford are the dollar comics. He's gonna be so psyched when he comes home tomorrow and sees what I bought him.

I just found out that they have smaller stores in the area for more recent issues but warehouse visits are by appt. which makes sense I guess given how massive it is. The trick is going to be not having half of my travel expenses tied up in Batman comics, but I just have so many gaps in the 70's...

Joss Whedon coming back to TV for Marvel S.H.I.E.L.D. series

http://blastr.com/2012/08/joss-whedon-coming-back-t.php

QuoteAvengers and Firefly fans, rejoice! Joss Whedon is coming back to the small screen, and he's bringing the Marvel universe with him.
ABC and Marvel have confirmed that Whedon is developing a TV series spinoff from The Avengers, based around the top-secret Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division (S.H.I.E.L.D.) organization that recently brought Earth's Mightiest Heroes together on the big screen.

The series will technically be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though Variety reports the storylines will be mostly "autonomous" from upcoming sequels such as Avengers 2 and Iron Man 3. That means it's unlikely that big-screen mainstays like Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye will be prominently featured on the show—but who's to say they can't pop up from time to time?

Whedon is signed on to co-write the pilot with his brother (and frequent collaborator) Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, and will stay on to help develop the broad strokes. Assuming it's picked up, Jed and Tancharoen would join Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell as executive producers.

If some of those names sound familiar, they should, because virtually everyone Whedon is bringing on board has worked with him on his former TV projects Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

For us, that means all these excellent writers are going to have big budgets and a bigger platform to play with, and with some autonomy from the films, they may get a long leash to really dig in and make this a compelling series.

Hoping to capitalize on the box-office love, ABC is putting the series into production immediately—so hopefully we'll have some more details soon.

Sound off: Do you think the Marvel universe is a good fit for live-action TV?

well as long as it doesnt air on the CW i'll def. check it out.

i let my guard down and checked out the first episode of "ARROW" last week... wow, bad idea.

since ive been heavy on DC Universe te last year there was a lot of talk on the forums about the show, so i decided to suffer thru it.

what a waste of a great chance for a good comic series.

all they'd have to do is take out everything that makes it a CW series and it could have been great, lol.

In 1983 comic book writer Alan Moore (Watchmen) wrote a great essay on Stan Lee called, "Blinded By The Hype: An Affectionate Character Assassination". The essay breaks down how Lee is both a hero and a villain in the world of comics.

Yes! It's great. So is American Vampire, if you've been reading it. Other good series i'm following these days are Harvest (about a ring of illegal organ sales), Revival, Punk Rock Jesus and Stumptown (v. 2, the first series was awesome and is available in a TPB).

Also, if you dig comics with a supernatural/Tim Burton/Neil Gaiman vibe, look up the Courtney Crumrin series. It's been around for a while; the earlier arcs are collected in TPB's and they just started a monthly series this year. My kids (11&13) are into it as well.

Current subs are:
Fatale
Walking Dead
Batman
Detective Comics (Batman)
Justice League
Action Comics
Thief Of Thieves (another Robert Kirkman. Really good.)
Dancer (also a pretty good book about a cia agent)
and all of the Before Watchmen books

The limited Spaceman just finished and you guys should look for the TPB fo that. I really enjoyed it.

I dropped a bunch over the past few months while picking up on the Watchmen books and Dancer. There's a Legends of the Dark Night line starting this month with a bunch of guest writers that I may try to grab, too.

just heard a new XMEN movie is in the worx for 2014. and it actually might shape up to my liking.
i guess the last one--FIRST CLASS, was a step in the right direction after the nightmare of XMEN3.

so, anyway, its apparently going to be called something like "Days of Futures Passed"-- and if they havent completely decided to FUCK with me, then maybe my dreams have come true!
no, not its not the MOODY BLUES musical, but only the best XMEN storyline of all time!!
LOL, in fact just like a week ago i was ranting about how they should use this exact storyline for a movie. crazy.

anyway, theres still hope i guess.

also, put this in the video game thread, but:

just signed up to try and get in the CLosed Beta for the new MARVELHEROES mmo.
don't think my pc will run it, but i am willing to blow it up trying! lol.

His work on Astonishing was really good, plus he had Cassiday as his artist and that guy rocks! Around the same time he wrote a short stint of The Runaways that my wife really enjoyed (she's a Whedon addict, ever since she got hooked on Buffy). But let me just warn you to stay away from Cabin in the Woods, it's a movie not a comic, but it's just no good.

Pretty sure I've mentioned Astonishing X-Men around here before. I read it specifically because of Whedon and loved it despite not being an x-men reader before. Dude has created so many great shows and things over the years. Most anything he touches is worth your time.

As for Cabin In The Woods, I've not seen it yet but the above comment is the only negative I've seen about it from anyone that I know. Hell, It's got a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes so it can't be that bad.

And from the Last Movie Thread Watched:

I don't know what it was about Cabin in the Woods, but neither myself or my wife liked it, she liked it less than me. I think my main gripe about it was the poorly written 'stoner' character, just giving us bud lovers a bad rep. I thought the plot and story were pretty cool.

So this past weekend Dagny went to the ALA (American Librarian Assosiation) Conference in Chicago and she brought me back a few surprises...

 • Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach - signed by Brian Azzarello
 • Batman The Dark Knight: Cycle of Violence - signed and personalized by Greg Hurwitz
 • Batgirl: The Darkest Reflection  - signed and personalized by Gail Simone

These were awesome surprises since neither one of us knew that DC comics was going to have an exhibition at the conference and that they were all free. The Before Watchmen alone is a $30 book ( it, as well as the other two, is a hardcover edition).

She said that she got to spend some time talking to Gail Simone about women in the comic book industry, this made her very happy. When Dagny and I first got together she asked me about women in comics and Gail Simone's name was all I could come up with, she really is a great writer.

She said Brian Azzerello was kind of quick and rude, but from reading his gritty, edgy works it makes sense.

Nice scores, MrC.
The Comedian & Rorschach, along with Dr. Manhattan were the best of the Before Watchmen series. Overall, the run was disappointing and I and my wallet were glad to see it end. Actually the Dollar Bill one-shot was surprisingly good.

You guys need to check out Bedlam. the first TP came out last month covering 1-6. 8 comes out tomorrow.
It's pretty great.

That, Thief of Thieves, Walking Dead, & the Doctor Who 50th anniv. serial are pretty much all I'm getting now. aside from a couple Batman books but I'm getting bored with those.

Anything else new & good out there these days?

Also, I just looked back and now that I've seen Cabin In The Woods, I can comment on this:

This character wasn't poorly written.
*Spoiler Alert*
He, like the others, was supposed to embody a horror film cliche. All of the main people were doped or otherwise induced to behave closer to horror movie stereotypes for the sake of the "ritual". His ridiculous behavior was even noted by the other characters.
End Spoilers

I got kind of tired of Fables right around the time Fairest was kicking off so I dropped the one and never picked up the other.
Once they got back into NYC was kinda the right time to quit, imo. Not that I didn't stick around for a few more issues.

Unwritten is pretty cool, if you haven't picked it up yet. American Vampire is good but on a bit of a hiatus; just had a one-shot released that was pretty good. The Massive is interesting but I'm still on the fence about it. 47 Ronin. Punk Rock Jesus. Revival. There are a few others but a lot of formulaic crap.

I second Shorelines recommendation of The Unwritten, it's a really good book. Think Gumby meets Harry Potter meets Pinochio meets Raymond Chandler. There's a 'boy wizard' who was written into real life by his father, he has the ability to travel into fictional worlds of books and there is a huge mystery going on the whole time.

so new DLC for DCUO this month is "War of the Light" PT.1

two new Lanterns were added to the LEgends pvp mode:
Atrocitous and Saint Walker.
IVe been playing the blue Lantern Saint and liked him so much ive been checking out his backstory.

really enjoyed this DLCs story direction in general.
im so much moreso a MArvel fan than Dc, but the Lantern content has alot of depth.

Atrocitous (red) and Saint (blue), and i believe thats John Stewart.  8-)

That's pretty cool. I love all the different Lantern's. It would be cool if they let you play as Larfleeze, the Orange Lantern. And the Red Lanterns are awesome. Atrocitous is pretty bad-ass too, he's the one who really killed Abin Sur, thus making Hal Jordan a Green Lantern.

larfreeze was just in our winter seasonal event. his dialogue's are classic.

we actually have ton of lanterns for Legends PvP:

Green:  Kilowog, kyle rayner and john stewart,
yellow: Arkillo, sinestro,  and amon sur
red: atrocitous
blue: saint walker

...i think thats all of em.

-amon sur is actually my nemesis in pvp, dude is OP, lol.

dam, i almost got spoiled cause when i went to quote your post it popped up, lol.

no, not looking for spoilers. hate those. i plan on seein this one.
i always liked cap, but the 1st film was sorta meh-ish besides Red Skull.

i thought i remembered teh characters falcon and the winter soldier from the books, but its been over 20 yrs since i read any Cap and ive totally spaced those characters backstories.

i was just trying to remember if the winter soldier was a specific storyline, which i thought it was, and maybe what the origins of the characters besides cap without it giving it away.

---maybe it'd be safest to just ask, if you had an opinion, -- if you thought it was a cool storyline. i feel like i recall it being one of the good ones, but again i might just be thinking of something else.
thx.

He was way more interesting in The Avengers.

I'm looking forward to this next one.

agreed absolutely.

that was exactly what i was thinking the other day while i had the cap movie on in the background.
hugo weaving as red mask was actually genius and the parts of the film beyond the setup were almost like a tease.

i actually really like  casting of the the actor that plays Cap and am very intrigued to see what they come up with.

Sentinels first appearance goes all the way back to 1965 x men 14.
the days of futures past storyline is 76 i think xmen 141-142

I picked up the 75th anniversary issue of Detective Comics a few months ago. It happened to be #27 of vol 2 and Batman first appeared in #27 pf vol 1, kinda cool. There was a retelling of that first issue in it.

The new spider-man movies definitly play to a much younger audience than us, but I liked the first one. And since Sally Field plays Aunt May that makes Peter Parker and Forrest Gump cousins, or something.

didnt realize the next XMEN movie was coming out memorial day, but then i just saw Olivia Munn on Cobert show and they talked about how she is playing PSylocke... seriously awesome. omg i love MUNN and i love psylocke.
i was sorta torn on the last film- Days of Futures Past. it didnt quite live up to my love of the original stories from the books, but im still pretty stoked to see them bring in Apocalyps for the new film.
oh yeah, and mohawk storm FTW. one of my fav classic looks from the books.

Yeah, Munn as Psylocke will be awesome. I just hope they put her in the traditional Psylocke get-up.  :sbw:

From the looks of it it's the Old Man Logan story that
ends in wolvies death
, and throw in X-23 who is
a clone of Logan but the Y chromosome in the DNA sample was damaged so they just doubled the X chromosome and made her a pretty awesome chick.
. It will definitely not be a 'kiddie movie' watch this trailer.

and this one. Much more X-23 in this one.

enjoyed the LEGION premiere.
i wonder how much they are going to actually tie into the Xmen mythos, especially with Professor X being his father.

I thought it was a great episode. And I loved how I couldn't tell what time period it took place in. At first it seemed like the 60's-70's era (even the music fit this era) in the asylum, then it went all futuristic outside. And David's girlfriend being named after the original singer of Pink Floyd is a great nod.

Part of the score even sounded like it was ripped right out of Stranger Things.

RIP George PĂ©rez

I had the pleasure of meeting him at a comic-con years ago and he sketched a Riddler form me and signed my copy of Green Lantern #132. He told me that was the very first piece of work he did for DC Comics, which was a pretty cool piece of surprise information.
