Also, not to highjack, but a sticky on music theory, discussion for learning Phish (and other related band) songs, teaching music, etc...might be beneficial.
Aight... Ill sticky for a week and we'll see what suggestions we come up with.
I know that both tet and I are pretty enthusiastic about sports... and mattstick is into sports....
But what else could we use?
dont forget about me
Maybe a sticky in the Tech section that has links to articles and how-to's of seeding, that only the Mods can alter.
And how about a FAQ for n00bs?
a NWS section

maybe we could put a countdown of sorts, marking how much $$$ has been donated to the server and how much more $$$ is needed to be meet the montly goal
I would like a noob's guide to Phish shows. I don't know which shows are sick and which are not, and although I wish I had the time to listen to them all, I don't. I realize this would be opinions and what not, but it could be an amazing resource for us new comers.

Back on topic:
How about an "Archive" board for say, old stickeys, informational threads like the "definitive list of times trey picked his nose onstage" and whatnot. the archive board could be broken down into useful subboards as well. Then we could have an archive for old tour project threads and whatnot, too.
interesting, but i think it would be too cluttered. i agree that the old stickies should be placed somewhere, i'll come up with something when i have a few moments...
I must admit that I've shamelessly stolen the idea from taperssection.com
that key is that threads in the archive board are all read-only for all but admins.
so, basically the archive and it's sub-boards mirror (roughly) the structure of the rest of the site.
Does TS.com archive all threads to read only archive forums after a certain amount of time? What threads get chosen for archival? Whats the difference in having them in an archived state of read only and having them on page 24 of the category theyve always been, ready for a bump?
If a sticky doesnt need to be sticky anymore, why not just unsticky it and let it fall off the page?
Seems like the archive makes most sense if youre also purging old threads.
Im hip to the idea but would like to hear how others have implemented it. I dont know how I feel about purging threads that havent been posted to in x amount of time.
In their case, the archive reflects useful reference material that has ben churned up in discussions or even single posts that contain valuable information. Much of that site is, of course, focused on technical knowledge and so, in their archive board there is a child board of key postings that come from the microphone forum and a child board with key posts from the pre-amps 7 processors board etc.
For week4paug, I see it as this:
archive:
-Phish reference materials
-definitive *blah* list threads. (this stuff probably becomes irrelevant once the wiki is live)
-bt posting
-complete projects
- technical help
- how to bt
- how to convert x to y
etc.
the idea being to keep old stickeys and other threads that may no longer need updating in an area that is even easier to find than wading through search results.
Perhaps, tho, it's not needed here.
A CHICK THREAD! :-D

go ahead and make one. just added the Red Light District as a section down below, check it out.
Fewer stickies in the General Topic forum.
There are 9 right now...
Do they all need to be stickies?
Do they all need to be in THAT forum?
Aug's DD thread was awesome, don't mistake me. See my earlier posts about an Archive board.
Name That Jam? Dead.
md5, ffp thread? tech Support.
At this point, when I login from a mobile device, I have to go to page two of the General topics forum to find the first of the regular, active threads. Page one is, now, ALL Stickies.
good point. just cleaned up a bit... not sure where to put that Phish vids thread though...
i'll work on cleaning things up more in the days to come, maybe creating another section or two just to organize better.
thank you.

the 8700g is the ONLY Blackberry that has enticed me. i've played with the 7100 series and hate that keyboard, and hence hate the Pearl as well. but, i love the big screen and full keyboard of the 8700. only thing i disliked was the lack of expandability and custom apps, and as a Palm user since about 1996, those are hard to give up...
blah blah blah... when i get my iPhone, i'll have no problems surfing the paug like a normal web user, instead of being a handicapped "smart phone" user...
;)
hopefully we get em in April, as the rumormill is saying!! :beers:
i know, i saw that yesterday, and got really excited... which would probably mean we'd get new iPhone models or OS upgrades w/new features in July!

The pearl is awesome. There is a HUGE learning curve, though. Can't really get anything done with the pearl for about 2 weeks while you learn how to use it. Honestly, I couldn't imagine having anything else, now that I finally learned how to use it!

You sure hope so.
I could view this site in a normal mode if the site itself didn't foist WAP on me.
lol... yeah, we'll see just how easy surfing on a 3.5" screen really is.
You wont do it near your computer, i'll tell you that.

that is unfortunately a feature of SMF's forums software. no real way to specify exactly which browsers get sent the WAP version, just "mobile devices". i'll look into a hack i suppose... any idea what your browser is called exactly, and what version? something like "Netscape Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/418.9.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/419.3" would give me something to work with... maybe if you can hit a webpage that displays that information and write it down, that'll help.

I figured it was a SMF thing...
If you know a site that'll tell me... I'll post it. the browser supports numerous emulation modes, I tried IE, Netscape and Blackberry.
http://www.ex.ac.uk/webmatters/whichbrowser.htm
any way you set it though, it goes through your wireless service's proxy. so, it may do it based on the host or IP...
This browser thinks it is
navigator.appCodeName = Mozilla
navigator.appName = BlackBerry
navigator.appVersion = 4.1.0 (BlackBerry; I)
k, thanks. this is a known issue with SMF, that it forces into WAP mode for Blackberry no matter what. i asked on their forums if there was some way to allow for a specific user override maybe - because to be honest, i don't want to force all Blackberry users to load the full page if all they want is WAP.
Don't sweat it. But thank you.
It's only a drag when people don't post the actual names of the artists & albums in the last album thread...
Cos the wap version doesn't load the images.

i hear ya. i use Opera on my Palm for most of my browsing so i can see it, never occurred to me that Blackberry would not do the same. i sometimes will use the standard WAP browser on the Palm when browsing this site from overseas though, so i never minded the lack of graphics.

it's on the top menu choice, between My Messages and Members, is it not?
if you mean the fact that upcoming birthdays are not listed below all the forum sections, that is likely because there are none for the next week or so... at least that is what i am assuming. i haven't touched the code in a while, so there's nothing i did to make it disappear. i presume it's the forum software that did that.

A quick question about that, does the person who is being ignored know that is what's going on. If not, there could be some very interesting things going on here in the future.
If you look in your own profile there is now something will tell you if you are being ignored. I just ignored you and when I check your profile it says ignored by users: 1, but it doesn't say who, tet may or may not be able to work out the bugs on that. I will unignore you.....for now

Basically a button that sets the text color to the background color and makes it a quote so that if someone wants to see the text, they highlight the spoiler or answer window. This is good for jokes and spoilers for tv shows and answers to trivia and those page-a-day calendars.

There is already the show club.
If you want to share something special, you can already do that here:
http://week4paug.net/index.php?action=downloads
Not necessarily what the site needs, but an idea nonetheless....if there's a reunion tour, have week4paug.net t-shirts made up with proceeds going to the server fund.
It would be cool just to have a "Shakedown Street" thread where buy-sell-trade could happen. Maybe sub-threads "ISO" and "For Sale/Trade". ISO would need to include what you want and what you're willing to pay/trade. Sale section would be item and price.
Homemade warez and garage sale items only (unless a shipment of 1T drives falls off a truck)... even better if tet takes a book from apple. You set your price and get 70% of the sale, proceeds to week4paug. Maybe it's safer to limit to homemade warez. This site could be a pilot for any item you make yourself.
We need a face-melting animated smiley...If I knew how to make one I'd do it myself....surely someone around here has the skillz!

Remember, it is possible that cops and feds read these boards! BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY!
Here's a suggestion: how about GPG-encrypted private messaging between the users? That way, you can talk individually to someone you may or may not know personally (at your own risk), and not put the board itself in any jeopardy for subsidizing illegal activity.

not possible, as far as i understand this software.
and FYI, we will fully cooperate with any law enforcement agencies if legitimate subpoenas are served. that means handing over the entire database of this website, which will likely contain a record of everyone's PMs. and i think some FISA Bill passed by Congress means i can't get sued by you assholes for it

if any of the MODS foresee a problem with this LMK, and if ya'll would make it a sticky that would be great.
thanks.
i'll make it into a proper section, i've just been super busy as of late.

Same here! XL please.
My mother's boyfriend's brother has a printing business called Odd-it-tees here in town. I could talk to him about getting stuff made up.
Don't know how much of a discount (if any) I'd get with the economy and all as it is, but they can do whatever we'd need.
I have them do a logo on my uniforms for work every summer. It's cheaper to buy shirts and bring them in so they can do the art, but it's not a requirement.
If I can be of service, have one of the mods say the word. If we did a pre-order and collected the cash first, then we could order what we need and send them out. It would prevent us from having a bunch of shirts lying around.
I'd be happy to help.

I like the idea of T-Shirts... I'm probably not going to make it to Hampton :x but I would buy a shirt off the site through pay pal if they were up....

An "Ignore Phish Tour Forum" button for all of us with sour grapes because we have no way to make it to summer tour.
Every time I hit the "Show Unread Posts Since Last Visit" button its just a sea of regret and noobs.

trust me, i'd be the first to implement it... i'm beyond pissed being in Africa for the public on-sale and not having a single ticket for JB/Camden to show for it...
but, i should point out that this is a Phish discussion forum. so, if it's that disturbing to you, i'm sure you can find some wonderful DB, SCI, or UM forums which will probably be void of any and all discussion of the Phish Summer Tour 2009 ticket situation, though of course I can't guarantee that.

No need to get that serious.
Just sour grapes, sour, sour, grapes.
See, I just don't use that "Show Unread Posts" button.
I just open each forum and read every post in turn.

Make it so all postings are deleted in the Shakedown Street section after they're dead postings... If they're filled the person who posted it should edit the post noted to be deleted and all ticket trade/sale deadlines that have past can easily be deleted...

Would it be possible to add a "child board" like the show club for all of the official roll call threads? It seems that the entire first page of the phish tour section are all stickies and they're only 1/2 of the shows. Just a thought.....

Thanks people! I feel like things are a bit more organized now. :-D
I'm not sure this is the right place for this, but nothing quite fit this topic. I think it would be cool if the recent post section on the front page was expanded to the past 10 or 15 posts. What is everyone's thoughts?
I never even look at that page.... I always use the "Show unread posts since last visit."
I don't think that would look good cosmetically.
I think it works fine the way it is but I think another option would be to have the last 5 threads posted to. would serve a similar purpose and not change the look of the site.
but I think it is fine the way it is.

I hear you. Maybe an option to display 10 or 15 posts if you want to?
If you look to the left of the window with the subjects in it, there is a little avatar that looks like a notebook.
If you click this notebook, you will see all of the posts in order beyond the five...

Maybe there's a way to do this that I'm unaware of, but it'd be nice to be able to search an individual thread, or maybe a "see all posts by username xxxxx in this thread". It can be tough to search for a post in a 40 page thread. I don't know if the search function is customizable, though. Or if anyone else knows of a more effective way to use the search function, I'd be curious to hear it.

i dont know of a way to search for posts by person in a certain thread...
BUT
you can very easily search within a single thread by opening the thread and using the search box at the top of the page. if you do it like that, it will only search within the thread. likewise, if youre in an individual forum and use the search box at the top of the page it will only search that individual forum. its kinda weird, and people have lots of complaints about the confusing search function in SMF but once you get used to how it works its actually pretty functional.

what's the deal with youtube imbedding?
the youtube plugin broke w/ the latest upgrade. plugins and addons dont usually get updated as quickly as the forums software itself, so the plugins gotta catch up every time the forums get updated. im not sure if its been updated for this version yet or not, maybe ill look into it next week.

i have a suggestion that i think could use some brainstorming... not sure exactly what we could do, but there has been some talk about at least creating a thread for AUdience recording source recommendations.
is this something we already cover with the Wiki? if so, i'm assuming it would not have running Rec.s while the tour is ongoing.
just looking for some input on this topic, maybe i could just create one thread for the second leg of tour, updated as sources come in for the new shows.
i know many of us, myself included would welcome a concentrated recommendation resource. Especially since with all the matrixs, on top of LPsbds, on top of OTS&FOB-Audience recordings that seem to fly out after each show, it can get rather convoluded trying to weed through the non-essential stuff. i'm sure that combining our collective ears there would be some great input.
i know i could just go ahead and start a thread, but i thought i'd mention it here first since its been brought up a few times and noones stepped up to the plate yet. thoughts fellas?
EDIT:

right after i posted this, i saw this:

I just learned something, thanks.
what's the deal with youtube imbedding?

Is there a history of the 'paug page. I keep hearing about how some things grew out of Further.net chats and it would be interesting to see how all of this evolved.
Thanks

I don't know, but I just do a "mark all read" every once in a while when the sports threads build up

We had a discussion on here at one point about adding the "ignore thread" feature... not sure where that went, but I'm bringing it up again... Every day there seem to be dozens of posts into the "Lost" thread... a thread I have not opened in months... I'd love to have that thread stop showing up in my "unread" list. Picky, I know. Sorry!

Sorry!
watch it buddy, those are my posts.
I get where you're coming from... I know you'd love to "ignore" all my Knee-high socks posts, though, so I think we're even.
dude really i might not post in it, but thats a top five thread for me brah.
but have you guys seen the latest installment?

I think we could make PG a little more happy if instead of adding an 'Ignore Thread' feature we put in a 'Recent Posts Containing The Word Pie' feature. :-D

I only use that on my blackberry.
i worked on installing an ignore threads modification for about an hour and a half tonight....
but it just isnt gonna work out.
i kept the modified (but buggy) files and may work on it again sometime, but not this week.

Thanks for looking at it, though... I know it's a small thing.
there are threads i wouldnt mind having on ignore, although as the admin i probably shouldnt have any people or threads on ignore.
but, bottom line was that the modification was pretty buggy, and was basically a pretty crude hack that only worked about 75%.
i saved the .rss feed for the mod's page, so i'll know when its updated, maybe it'll be a little more stable w/ our default board theme / layout.
Is it possible to add a private chat IM feature... It would be really cool if you could ask people on line to a private chat, I thinks anyway..??
It would be cool if we could quote from locked threads. I was looking through some old Live Setlist Threads and wanted to quote something that was said in that thread in the Post Show thread, but am not given a quote option. I know that it doesn't appear because it is meant to quote in the same thread, but that's also how i quote stuff into other threaDS.
^^ yeah, that kinda sucks, but i get it. for threads that have been locked due to fights, but sometimes you wanna quote a live setlist thread....
also, can you search your own posts?
i know if you are in a cetain thread and search, thats how it works, but you cant click on your own posts, and search....

Not sure if it's possible but it would be nice to add more than 10 people to a private message. Though it's not something that I've tried before it would have been nice to have everybody on 1 message chain for the Hartford roll call group.

an IRC chat room might be cool...
'paug's roots are in irc chatrooms
theyre simple to set up. pick an app, pick a server, connect and start a channel. im sure i could put an irc server on the week4paug server to keep it private, too.
but as far as site integration with a chat feature, i have not seen any smf chat implementations that looked like something i want to install on this site. there was one that came up last year that looked like it could be cool, but it never made it out of "alpha" stage, and thats a potentially buggy nightmare w/ the traffic that 'paug gets. no chance of me installing alphas on this site.

maybe this has been asked before, but can we remove, or at least raise, the embedding video limits? All of us regulars are getting the "Embedding disabled, limit reached." message at this point. Makes it annoying in the random threads, imo.

no, i mean 3rd party to the forums software, what you put on your phone to access the forum with is your business. software on our server is what im talking about - the forums run on a piece of software, and i only use packages that are built specifically for, authorized by, and supported by the people who write the base forums software.

thats a lot of database to search through, especially when you start searching for more than one word exclusively w/ another, using "quotes" and things like that. be as specific as you can w/ your searches and only search the forum where the post youre looking for is.
or, i can start deleting old threads.

i dont know about forums and what not, but the google or any other search engine can sort through trillions of web articles in a matter of seconds...
isnt there a google search function you could implement on the site to search through it?
/just sayin, btw.
ive made more valid comparisons that youve disagreed with than week4paug.net's search vs. google.
you can go to google and search using the "site:week4paug.net yoursearchterms" function

really not looking for a fight at all. ^^ thats a good option. just wondering why it cant/shouldnt be/ whatever into the site. there are many sites that use an internal google search, right?
im sure ive seen it. ive never looked into how it happens or if theres an implementation for our software. so, i dont know if it can / cant, should / shouldnt, etc, etc.
