I wonder how much tonights curfew weighed on Trey's mind?  With all those empty seats there is a lot less of an incentive to pay the union fines for breaking curfew.

Tonight was a ton of fun!  First Tube opener was a great surprise!. No quarter was sick as well and got a huge reaction!

Although i thought the sound sucked at PNC (Trey was so loud and SO harsh) i liked the vibe there, lots of energy.

No where near.as.good as Bethel 2 though ....

I hope I never tire of them either.  I really like what phish is bringing to the table this summer.  I understand that some are dissapointed, and I can understand that.  They aren't the same band they were 15 years ago.  They're more mature now, and want to get different things out of the live experience.  I absolutely am thrilled to see where this new concise yet fluid phish takes us!

That ghost is pretty incredible.  I love the Scent fake out before going into Numberline.  Trey totally kept us on our toes with that one.

This show is vaguely reminiscent of Fukuoka 2000 imo.

I think Phish is definitely going in a new direction.  I for one love it!

If by "new direction" you mean having a 6 minute Heavy Things being longer than Piper and an 8 minute KDF being longer than a 7 minute Ghost, then I hope you die a slow, long, painful death courtesy of 3 wasted wigger hippies forcefully giving you PCP and Viagra injections, tying you to a chair, and then making you listen to sloppy Disco Biscuit shows while being tended-to by an obese woman with severe gingivitis who was fed 2 triple-stacks of molly and told she had free reign to "go to town" on you.

It's quality, not quantity my man.  This is concise phish at it's greatest.  I love that the band is doing in 7 minutes what it used to take them 24 minutes to do.  I know it's an aquired taste like caviar that maybe not all have a refined enough palate to enjoy, but man, Phish was on their A game tonight.   Not a single wasted beat or note.

kudos phish!

Happy to oblige.

This show is more weaksauce.

Tweezer is cool and was probably awesome to dance to for eleven minutes but they don't really do anything with it aside from the rawk groove. then Trey pops the energy bubbly and the drift into No Quarter which is also cool but not something that I think they need to do on the regular. Carini rounds out the part of this show worth seeking out for a deliberate listen. The jam on the end returns us to the same place that Tweezer had hovered but then Trey drops into Piper (which sucks) and then Trey kicks it over into Twist (also sucks) and then they slam into Ghost (horrible version.)

All i've listened too is the No Quarter, and at first i was like, Shit this is awesome!! But then upon second listen i realized. Trey's tone is too harsh for the song. It needs to be smooth. But either way, will report back more when done listening to the whole show.

I posted hate here last night, not sure what happened to it. Oh, well....

I don't know how anyone can compare this show with 5/28 - it's not even close.  I do agree that it' about quality over quantity, but where is the quality? A 7 1/2 min Ghost? Really?  JUST as it started to get a little bit of momentum - WHAM!!  Thanks Trey    I don't need another Carini - pretty quick repeat IMO. A one show gap for Suzy - jeeez.  And to think after 5/28, that I was giving serious consideration to hittin' up GW next week.  Yeah, I'm all set now.  Really dissapionted right now condering the first 2 shows.

Actually the setlist looks sick imo and I actually do like most of the 1st set minus the SOAMelt.  However the 2nd set is a paper whore imo.  Lots of glitz and not much substance!

I'm sorry, i"d have to Disagree. then again i'll say it now i'm basis for 5/27. That show ruled way more then 6/1 Sure the Boogie got fucked, and botched, but then it got so spacey and the > into Waves was good. I also think they should play more Round Room stuff. and the Cross Eyed was so good. Trey was Firing on all cylinders. Then just that huge drop in it, i forgot at what time it happened but it was dark and then just were playing some heavy shit.

I Thought the beginning of Trey's solo in No Quarter was kinda bad. But towards the end when he kicks off with the Wah that shit got good. But the beginning was just a bad start to a solo.

While I don't subscribe to the "longer=better" school of thought, it's kinda hard for a jam to evolve in 6 min

the piper > twist I don't mind so much, but it really was obvious that Mike wanted to continue the ghost. you can hear him playing a bass doodle over trey's opening chords to BDTNL. then BDNTL just drops in and trey sounds all rough and the energy is just gone. I usually do like #line, but it was a bad segue and a bad idea.

didn't I read something a couple years ago about how they were going to write setlists again? My guess is they wrote a setlist for 3/6/09 that was comprised of the first two songs and since then they've been making it up as they go along.

I agree, longer does not mean better, it's just when they keep cutting things off and not letting things evolve its just dissapointing.

faux- you are nuts dude. not a wasted note? concise? have you listened to the show, or are you just being sarcastic...?

Set II is complete shit. Sorry if this comes off as hate, but go back and read my long post in the 5/31 thread if what I'm saying seems too "hatey".

Full review:

We were running a little late to the show. Traffic kind of sucked getting in, but we were driving in last minute...and so were a lot of people apparently. A few downpours pre-show, but nothing too crazy weather-wise. it was H-O-T and humid as fuck. Got into the lot around 7. Drank a couple of beers pretty quick, ran into Danje and shared hellos and a few words. He informed us that the boys started pretty early last night, so we decided to head in and find our seats.

The first thing I noticed walking into the venue was how weird/different the crowd was at this show. I don't think I saw dreadlocks the entire time I was there. Almost no heads at all. Lots of bros and trashy fake-tan chix. And fat dudes. Jersey.

We got to our seats and immediately the boys came out. They busted into First Tube which was a big shock to me. I loved that as an opener, but more for the novelty of it... because nobody really seemed super into it. Crowd was pretty mellow at first. Stealing Time = time to grab beers and waters for my crew. Didn't hear the song and didn't really care... The acid hit me hard in the beer line. And the sweating started...

Walking back down to my seats, who do I run into but WTU? He came and joined us and we continued to rage as Camel Walk came on. Great to hear this tune. This was when the crowd started getting into it. It was a solid version and a lot of fun to dance to. Heavy things was next, and I wasn't that disappointed to hear it. I actually really enjoyed trey's solo in this version. Nothing mind-blowing but it was nice to hear trey having fun up there (very obvious that he loves the tune). Good standard bouncy version. Jibboo was standard but I really like its place in the first set. It's a very summertime song to me. Again, nothing spectacular, but a fun version nonetheless. I was sweating my balls off by this point. And off comes my shirt.

My friend Michelle really wanted to hear Wilson (and it was my call for the opener) - so she got her wilson. I thought the placement of this was strange, but whatever. Pretty standard 3.0 wilson. Seven Below was also standard, but had some cool moments. I thought trey and the boys were vibing really well with the crowd. Even though there was nothing super spectacular, I could tell that they were all having fun. The energy started to pick up in 7 below, and flowed right into KDF. Trey also loves this song, that was very clear. He had the rockstar (legs planted and spread out) stance during this one. Totally loving it.

Axillla is where the energy really picked up. The crowd and the band were both rocking out for this. People were psyched, the band was psyched, and its exactly what I wanted to see in a phish show. I knew something good was coming. The energy was right. At this point I had very high hopes for the show...

SOAM was the highlight of the show for me. I've only gone back and listened to it once (yesterday in the car), but it was as good as I remembered it. Certainly not a legendary version, but it was the best split I've heard in 3.0. What I really liked about it was that the crowd was listening, and the band didn't seem to feel like they were rushed. Good patience and thoughtfulness in this jam. Not to mention that at the time, it was psychedelic as shit and kind of melted my brain a little bit. This was the tune my girl really wanted to hear, and she got a pretty damn good version imo. I was sure this was going to be a hawt show at this point. Suzy was great - kinda weird there was just a one-show gap for this, but I was happy to hear it (and page absolutely tore it up). Crowd was loving it. We kept referring to Page as the "nutty professor" - his new glasses look pretty sharp too btw.  8-)

End set. Tripping face. How big were those drops again?  :wtu:

Bathroom, beers, water, still no shirt, drunk bros, fake tans, yada yada yada...We go back to our seats.

Lights down again. Tweezer. Another repeat from the tour, but whatever, I love this song. With its spot opening the set, I had a great feeling it was going to get dark and psychedelic and maybe even turn into a nice long jam. One of my favorite non-musical phish concert moments happened about 2 min into the song. The crowd on the lawn started ROARING, and everyone in the pav was all "Wtf mate?". All of a sudden, we all start to feel water hitting our backs. I thought someone was throwing water around, and my gf thought Phish had turned on the sprinklers on the lawn  :hereitisyousentimentalbastard We turned around and it was POURING down rain. People were going nuts. Phish turned up the energy a lot and trey was playing awesome harmonics as little guitar-fills during the composed section of the tune. The vibe was just right. Surreal, magical, and exhilarating all at once - just how a phish show is supposed to feel.

Then these douchebags came and kicked us out of our seats (well, maybe we were the douchebags, since we were in their seats, but whatever...) - The rain had stopped and the pav was really squished anyway, so we said fuck it and went up to the lawn. Lots more dancing room up there anyway since everyone had bumrushed the pav in the rain. We watched the 2nd half of the tweezer jam from the lawn - I was kind of disappointed in this version. It started off pretty meh, sort of went somewhere (some nice dissonant 'out there' runs from Trey), but for the most part it was just a normal 3.0 Tweezer.

No quarter was fucking awesome. Very psychedelic to me at the time. Page's vocals were tripping me out. I loved it (even though I couldn't remember what the song was called at the time )

It was all downhill from NQ on. Carini was cool to hear, but they had played it so recently and everyone was kind of all wtf? Total loss of momentum. Piper was absolute garbage. Some of the worst phish I've ever heard in my life. I like the song twist, but nothing happened in this version. Ghost was a disaster. I kind of wanted to leave at this point, but I was still enjoying myself and thought maybe they'd save the set so we stayed. #line was another tour repeat, which was fine because it was the 5th show of the tour and about time for the repeats to start happening. I was hoping this jam would turn into something cool, but like the rest of the set, it just didn't go anywhere. When they ended the set, I was kind of surprised. It seemed really early, and the boys seemed very frustrated (I could see it in their faces on the big screens by the stage.) Straight up frustrated. Trey just wanted to get out of there - he looked embarassed, honestly.

I fucking hate show of life. Tweezer Reprise was one of the highlights of the post-setbreak show, and it was a standard version. That's saying something.

Overall, I'm not upset I made the trek. Phish shows are always a good time, and I love cheering them on when they're playing well, and even analyzing them when they're not. It's just a fun game/gamble. Some shows have it, some shows don't. This one could have, but they lost a lot of momentum and just couldn't get back on their feet...and kind of gave up. Sucked to see that, but hey, it happens. My crew still had a blast. I also ran into Jez during setbreak, and possibly a couple others, but I don't really remember that well....

Oh, and watching drunk kids bust ass on the muddy lawn is one of the funniest things ever.  :hereitisyousentimentalbastard

So that's my review! Pretty excited for Camden... I haven't lost hope yet! I love this band too much to lose hope this early in the tour...

I actually find myself agreeing with you a lot in regards to Phish. I don't see how you don't think set II is absolute garbage. Would you mind pointing out time markers (like 5:57 in x or y jam) of stuff you liked? The whole second set is just aimless noodling and fumbling around. It is not good music.

"blow out candles once again.." =  when Trey aborted out of Ghost into #line.  Mike was spinning out some super nice lines, powered by Fish however it was not to be.

edit - I really like the No Quarter, they all do a nice job esp. Trey.  His playing reminds me of the 26April1994 cover of Sun Ra's Carefree, similar melodicism.

Wow, i'll have to revisit it. I only listened/watched the official vid once through, but was pretty sure it was a steaming pile of discombobulated crap, particularly the end. I thought it had a lot of promise with some nice soundscapes conjured in the beginning that could of been explored, but they weren't. Really looked like Trey had no idea what to play at times so he just made faces. He should enter that air guitar competition in Japan, I bet he'd win.

OMG!!!  Unfinished Twist!!!!!!

Seriously, this show makes absolutely NO fucking sense.

Tweezer is loose as fuck with lots of playful Trey, but as such its a bit sloppy, but you can tell the band was in a great fucking mood; Trey's pedal-goof at the start of the jam was kinda funny, but I really dug the effect he did during the Ebeneezer evil part.  Right away the jam gets deep and heavy, and Trey is letting Page take control with his piano.  A lot of his licks make me think of the 7/8/00 Tweezer.  But he also takes his time with some thoughtful melodic stuff midway through the jam.  He takes his time climbing his way up the fretboard, and Fish compliments the tension really well.  Page lays down heavy piano comping, and the turn-arounds start coming quicker and easier, and fucking once it gets going, Trey starts RAGING it!!!!  Dissonant tension, and gnarly Trey trilling, and climbing releases!!!  TENSION, PAYJORGAN EVIL!!!!!  HOLY SHIT this is badass!!!!!!  Wow!!!  Crashing chord to end it, and a fucking cool sustain Pay Jorgan swelling outro....before something breaks on the organ?  maybe?  hmmm...   but i LOVE the space when Page moves over to the other synth toy and Fish gets quiet and active with the rim-clicking and Mike gets it on with the Disease flange-envelope.

Carini was also host to a great jam, and was into a nice evil piano place when Trey begins Piper, which was fitting but could have been a touch smoother.

However, Piper is where it gets weird.  Trey seemed to be lacking ideas, and so he goes over to Mike and presumably says "Twist", only to come back with some seriously fiery licks and helps lead the band into a heavy piano-based groove, and then we get some tasteful Pay Jorgan licks before Mike apparently began counting off Twist.

But TWIST!!!!!!!  If faux is being sarcastic, then he's still on the money, because the last 3 minutes of this Twist is AWESOME.  The jam is pretty good, standard fare for the most part; it does its job satisfactorily, but then ends up melting into this beautifully deep and dark goo-space, and ends with some truly splendid melodious chord arpeggiation by Trey.  This was fucking GOOD, stuff that I want to actually listen to again.

And then the Ghost.  Oh, this fucking confused Ghost.  Trey forgets how to play the song, in place of Cities teases and some other song I can't remember (the lick that brings in the flubbed final verse).  BUT THE JAMMING!!!!!!!  Trey actually modulates into a pH-style of playing that reminds me of perhaps the Radio City Ghost, or something else....and Page lays out some tasteful Rhodes licks that Trey actually RESPONDS TO and builds together.  And then Trey leads a powerful up-swing in energy, and another turn-around which Page fills in with a wonderful descending piano line, and Fish gets into the trance-house drum mode of the Radio City Ghost, only to have Trey fucking douche it with his fucking douchey fuck-tarding doucheness.

But then this Number Line is really off the hook......  the energy is fucking bonkers, and Trey actually is totally inspired with ideas up the ass, and ends up shredding the ending really well.  I mean, the jam starts off pretty standardly, with Trey playing a number of "out" lines for tension, and Page being really active on the piano.  Fish is unusually responsive to their playing, and propels the turn-arounds pretty judiciously.  Trey is wicked active on the ascent, and builds it up to a big peak pretty quickly and smoothly.  And Trey seems to be acutely aware of what he wants to do, and is able to match it, especially with Page's strong accompaniment.  His playing is totally awesome in the last few minutes of the jam, tossing off wicked badass pentatonic rock licks with Page pounding on the piano pretty hard.

This Number Line jam is seriously fucking dirty-good, and when Pay Jorgan comes out to play at the end.... wooo-weee!!!!  Absolutely monstrous!!!!  Page's ad-lib harmonies for the ending chorus are really great too.
