Trying to make it work.  It's tough with the kids.  If I take them it will cost me a fortune.  If I go alone or with my wife they'll freak out.  Really want to go but I just don't think it's in the cards.  Ugh.

Don't tell me you traded in the surfboard for a set of clubs.
I'm trying to picture you in plaid shorts and a golf shirt, does not compute.

All my MN peeps got shut out, which I was surprised by..

Does Mexico always sell out?  Because this one is shaping up to be a shit show as well

Edit:

The wording in the follow-up email should be an indication of things are gonna go tomorrow:

QuoteAn extremely limited amount of Phish: Riviera Maya 2022 packages go on sale to the general public tomorrow, June 9th, at 1PM ET.

Yeah, I actually went for a slightly nicer room at first... that was sold out, then lucked out still getting a normal room.

I think all the Mexico runs "sold out" but not immediately.

$4k for the cheapest single room option.
$2.5k if you find a roommate.
$2k if you get a few roommates.

That includes food, booze & transportation. Everything but flights.

3600-5500$ for 1 person. Some of them had early checkin/late check out that I dont really care for either.

Not really, just looking around solo right now trying to jump in a 3-4 person room. I know other ppl there so prob end up chillin in their rooms most the time too or stay there if I ended up rooming with a rando.

Dead and Company is doing 2 weekends in Mexico and the first starts today/tomorrow.  A few weeks ago, Dead & Co. offered refunds to anyone who wanted to bail given things are "unsafe" right now.  Classy move, I thought.  That window has closed.  Since then, Billy announced he can't go because he has heart issues, and Mayer tested positive, so he's out.  They aren't offering refunds.  Most people are locked into their flights anyway.  Insert Dead & Co joke here...blah blah...but that really blows.

Seriously. They tweeted the announcement at 5:45 pm. That's a bit absurd and unreasonable. It's not like covid numbers (the cited reason) only spiked at 5:30. They had plenty of time to look at this, forecast a bit, and decide to go forward with it or not.

I'm with Hicks -- everything is basically a coin-flip proposition at this point. Those odds are just too low to reasonably ask people to make plans and spend money, in my opinion.

Yeah after the Dead n Co cancellation, I am not sure. Its a lot of money to lock into an event that wont happen for another year, or try to deal with getting a refund from some rando.
My roommate works for CID and is in Mexico now, about to hit him up to see whats up with the rest of these.

Well, Mayer and Billy K were already out and I heard rumors about Chimenti too, so I think that's why they had to pull the plug, not enough guys suiting up to make a regulation squad.  Don't think anybody wants to see just Bobby, Tommy Ham and Mickey. Although that does sound like a pretty intriguing trainwreck.

damn!  people are already there!

Seriously. They tweeted the announcement at 5:45 pm. That's a bit absurd and unreasonable. It's not like covid numbers (the cited reason) only spiked at 5:30. They had plenty of time to look at this, forecast a bit, and decide to go forward with it or not.

Yeah after the Dead n Co cancellation, I am not sure. Its a lot of money to lock into an event that wont happen for another year, or try to deal with getting a refund from some rando.
My roommate works for CID and is in Mexico now, about to hit him up to see whats up with the rest of these.

could be just a rumor, but i heard it was due to the staff testing positive.  it became too difficult to even put on the event with so few people available to work it.  add that to billy and mayer not being there and fans already bitching and you have yourself a canceled event.  i guess anyone who had tix for this weekend is getting a free stay for the entire weekend.  you're out the flight cost, but not terrible.  the real question is what are they going to do with people who had tix for NEXT weekend.  they obviously don't want them coming down there.

They sent out emails to ticketholders. If you want to come down next weekend to the resort its 600$/night and they will deduct it from your refund.

The players going down is huge, but it's notable that the announcement only blamed "spiking COVID-19 cases" and that "canceling is the correct thing to do for the fans and for our crew." If you're going to try and generalize it like that then you open yourself up to (justifiable IMO) criticism for making the call at the 11th hour when it's not like omicron hasn't been ramping up for weeks now -- the announcement even implied that the writing had been on the wall for days. If some true inflection point/event was hit, I'd be v curious to know what that was and how the world was appreciably different as of, say, noon yesterday.

They started cancelling it back then.  This is the tempo Bobby cancels at nowadays, no matter who's in the band with him.

Even Phil cancels things at the correct speed, and he's like 150 years old.   A lot of people think that's why he's not in Dead & Co., and they may be right.

Saw an article yesterday with CID reps claiming that other scheduled shows will be happening but, we all know that's subject to change. No way you'd see me jumping on this sort of thing at this point though. if you didn't get your package from CID, that refund is going to be a HASSLE.
Title: Re: Riviera Maya 2/24th-27th, 2022
Post by: emay on January 12, 2022, 10:51:02 AM
This is pretty much listed on all their upcoming CID travel shows:
"If, at any point during the two weeks leading up to a particular event, the CDC Risk Assessment Level for COVID-19 for the Quintana Roo (Cancún) region of Mexico rises to a Level 4 or Mexico designates the area unsafe to hold an event we will be offering full refunds to those not wishing to attend the particular event and will work closely with the Artists and their representatives to determine if an event should be canceled. At this time, we are taking this situation day by day and event by event."

I guess Dead n Co wanted to pull the plug once they saw the members getting sick last minute and Jeff could have been sick too, that would have been half the band out. I doubt many people would want another fill in with Tom Hamilton. Also some positive tests within the CID staff when they got to Mexico. The venue didn't want them on the property, and now they have to quarantine in a hotel in Mexico for 5 days before coming back. Might be a little strife in the air since DeadnCo announced it s before CID. Crash my playa is planned to happen and apparently there is no vax mandate for that one...

In the heat of the moment, we all make choices about which triggers we pull.  Sometimes there's two weeks notice, sometimes she just whispers something really dirty in your ear and that's that.

Gonna have to disagree, the only really notable thing about Friday was the Halley's > Satisfaction, the rest was pretty typical 3.0, a big DWD w some cool parts but a lot of aimless sections too, a decent Carini but nowhere near the top tier versions from 2021 like Dicks and SF. People make are making a big deal about the four song second set, but it was under 70 minutes so really all they did was move one of the songs to the encore where we got one of the most flaccid Antelopes of all time.

Last night though was a completely different level, Trey was back to his 2021 self, just letting his playing and ideas flow. And the result was a deep Twist from the get go, the best Wolfmans in years and stellar jams in SYSF, Scents and C&P. Also thought putting Wedge in the encore instead of it killing the flow in the middle of the second set was a great move. Legit Slave too which is kind of rare these days. I honestly was kind of worried after the first two nights that the 2021 magic was gone, but it was definitely back last night.

Around 15 minutes in I swear it sounds like Trey is teasing 'It's Raining on Prom Night' from Grease.

Good freakin' times. If there's a heaven - I picture it like this for eternity (they'd have better buffalo wings though)

Pool hang all day. Swim up bars. All you can eat. All you can drink. Phish on the beach. Dance pool party all night.

Somehow (I still haven't figured it out) we found this side entrance that seemingly no one knew about. I waited in zero lines and got like 10th row 3 out of the 4 nights. It was such an attentive crowd too - very little talking. Just such positive vibes all around. Had a good hang with Whatapiper+wife who I hadn't seen for years! Bumped into Disco+wife one of the nights and hung out with this degenerate :sbw: as much as possible. I'm sad it's over but also feel so completely fulfilled by the experience.  I love this band.

Loved last night, exceptional 46 Days in the first set and the second set got weird, with a drill jam at the end of Caspian, deep BSOS and a filthy Golden Age. Legit Hood peak too. Definitely best Mexico run ever from the couch.

Definitely the most highlight jams I can remeber from any Mexico run.

That 46 Days was a snooze fest.

I was actually just thinking they could/should bump it up to 2 weekends. Dead and co was going to do 2 consecutive weekends this year until it got canceled.  I'm not sure if anyone has ever done 2 weekends.  I heard this year the phish capacity was 5,000.  Does that sound about right to those that went?

And there is so much to do in that region during the off period - diving, hiking, ruins, brothels. Would be unbelievable. I used to do business just down the road in Puerto Adventuras.

yeah that sounds about right. Not a bad seat in the house and plenty of room everywhere I went. It cost me roughly $3500 with airfare. I'd be happy to pay double that for 2 weeks of heaven.

Not sure what the brothels in Rivera Maya are like, but stay out of the ones in Tijuana. Or at least, that's what I like, heard.

3500 for both of you?  I'm calling nans on that

when I went in 2020 in was just over 5k for 2 without airfare

hence the at least 10k for 2 weeks remark, including extra curriculars

it was $3500/each. Kelsey would not be able to do two weeks due to work. I, on the other hand, have nothing to do at home.

'Twas just above $5K for Michelle and I (not including airfare) - so about $6K total. I spent maybe $100-$150 there in tips, and was pretty generous - the staff was so awesome all around and deserved every dollar. Non stop service.

I stayed an extra day (highly suggested) so... for six nights it's around $6k total. $3k per person.

That's $500 a night.

Subtract a regular phish ticket per person = $400/night.

Subtract traditional lodging costs (let's say $200/night cuz it's preeeeetty nice there)

Now we're at $200/night/person.

"Free" booze per day = $50?
"Free" food per day = $50?

Well now we're down to $100/day per person of unaccounted money.

I'm proably oversimplifying things but my point is... its not that rediculously "overpriced" if you break it down. Sure, you could travel Europe for two weeks at the same price but....there wouldn't be any phish shows on the beach so.... that's priceless if you ask me.

Shit. Math'd. There were only 4 shows and I subtracted $100 each night for tickets.

Annnnnyyyyways... just come to Mexico if you can. It's expensive but it's the best so just do it y'all. The more the merrier.

Phish shows are getting damn expensive.  But when you compare a regular show to a Mexico show, the price of mexico is INSANE!  I get it.  It's amazing,  but I'm always a little surprised that there are thousands of fans willing to do it.

how much would it cost hypothetically, to go to dicks and stay on-site in a (nice) hotel with multiple restaurants (all free), multiple bars (all free), multiple pools (free free free), and tickets to each of four shows??

just saying

plus it's February and 85 down there

GBL raises a good point. My hotel in Bangor, of all places, is running me $400 for the night. Tack on $100 pits and fees, drinks, food, gas and it really doesn't feel that far off a nightly rate in MX.

That was our digs in 2019. We had a blast but it was pretty ghetto.
Clerk was taking off and getting lit with some of the guests.
We're at the Hojo's across the ramp.

The wife and I were doing a Home Alone marathon (just the original, #2 and the new one) this Christmas and we totally forgot that the bloated douchebag of an ex-POTUS pops in in the middle. Kinda soured our time.
