I looked at the Meta opening day lineup and had to make sure it wasn't April Fools Day.

we want to win, but our best pitcher (after Harvey) is in the minor leagues because we play in the biggest market in the country and want to not have to pay him a year early 6 years from now.  :frustrated:
I'm upset already and a pitch hasn't been thrown yet.

It could be worse, you could have traded for RA Dickey and have him starting tonight.

But the Mets offence is lol.

This year in the AL East is going to be very interesting, IMO.  If the Blue Jays can get it together, it will be very competitive from top to bottom.

I do.  He's got alot to prove, obviously, but he has been really solid since his move to the bullpen (last year he had a 2.81 ERA over 68 appearances)and can hit the mid/upper 90's with his fastball when he wants to.

I heard the same radio broadcast as Paul.  they were talking a bit about his splits vs. righties and vs. lefties.  I think lefties hit close to .300 against him last year.
I don't know enough about him.  I just heard that on the radio.
Title: Re: MLB 2014

I won't be shocked if Hunter struggles and a few guys get a shot at the role.  Buck is extremely loyal to his guys (see: Jim Johnson and his league leading 9 blown saves in 2013) so Hunter will REALLY have to struggle, but other guys like Darren O'Day and Ryan Webb come to mind as potential replacements if need be... Hopefully it doesn't come to that though.

If the O's can stay afloat in this first month with Machado still recovering and Troy Patton suspended for the first 25 games, I think they've got the talent to make some noise this year.  Alot can happen over the course of a season though.

Drew Hutchinson looked pretty good last night, hopefully we can get 31 more of those from him.

Jays pitching has the talent to surprise with Hutch, Morrow and McGowan.  Or they could all be hurt and it will be another nightmare season.

^ HA.

I've always maintained Jeter was one of the most overrated players of this (or maybe any) era. It's not that he's bad -- just overrated thanks to his association with the all-hallowed Yankees.

That and I always hated his exaggerated body movements at the plate to try and make inside or outside strikes look like balls. Not buying it, Jeets.

Yankees "Fans", LOL

Costas, broadcasting last night's game, said: There is something ironic about Yankee fans deriding a player as a sellout.

Cano booed in return to NY (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/cano-helps-ms-win-return-025324920--mlb.html)

QuoteCano got a mock cheer when he struck out to end the inning, then was met with chants of ''You sold out!'' from the Bleacher Creatures when he took his spot at second base.

To recap:
1. Yankees fans
2. Criticizing a player for "selling out"
3. After signing a big contract

Another blurb from Bob Costas' commentary during the broadcast:
Quote
Costas, broadcasting last night's game, said: There is something ironic about Yankee fans deriding a player as a sellout.

Costas is dead on.  I still hate him though.

I've been enjoying watching a lot of NL East baseball this year.  some good young talent in that division.

This has been a dream season in Blue Jays land, don't want to jinx it or rub it in 'cause a lot of AL East teams are having issues.  We've had good "Mays" before, now it's time to follow one up with a good June and put the rest of the AL East behind us.

After last season, the Red Sox have, for me, a grace period to suck for a year, which they are currently using. As such, I have not gotten very engaged this season yet, though I did attend the David Price Consequence-Free Beaning Show last Friday. Don't get me started on how the umps and MLB botched the fuck out of that.

Quote
On Sunday, Machado caught catcher Derek Norris with his backswing on two separate occasions, the second forcing Norris from the game. All the while, Machado showed no concern for Norris' wellbeing, an attitude that struck some of the A's players the wrong way.

"Usually most guys, it's a, 'You all right?' Something," Norris said. "But, if anything, I might've caught him smiling one time, which is kinda bizarre. Not really much [courtesy] coming from his side today. I don't need a guy to ask me if I feel all right to feel good about a situation, but I think it is courteous for one ballplayer to another to ask if they're all right. But yeah, nothing."

I'm not just saying this because it involves the Orioles.  I laughed at Dallas Braden a few years back when A-Rod walked through "his area" on the field running back to the dugout.  I HATE A-ROD.  I grow tired of the "unwritten rules" of baseball.  Does this guy understand how big of a pussy he sounds like?  He didn't ask me if I was ok?  Are you fucking serious?  Machado needs to grow up too.

Agreed.  And he also swung after the ball was already in the catcher's glove.

If it were me, and I was trying to get revenge, that bat is going straight at the pitcher's head as hard as I can swing it for throwing at me twice in the same at bat, not at the third baseman for tagging too hard 2 games ago.     Or you could be old school(the "acceptable" way) and have your pitcher peg Moss or Donaldson.

So you think you're gonna sweep?  We'll see.  O's have been playing better of late, but our starting pitching has been iffy at best.  You get the rookie Gausman tonight.  Showalter has said if he pitches well, he stays up with the big club even with Gonzalez coming off the DL.  He will be motivated for sure, but we'll see how he reacts to a bit of pressure.  Everyone around here is hoping that his last outing against the A's isn't a fluke and that he's turned a corner.

O's have to sweep if they want to keep pace, Jays just have to win 1 and we still have a few games on 'em.

Jays bats have been ice cold, so the O's could sweep if that continues. We've played well at Camden Yards so I'm hoping to see some of that again.

It's gonna be one of "the birds" who wins the East unless the Yankees start throwing Tanaka every game.

Jay's haven't won a game on the weekend since Father's Day and have lost 2/3 of their games since June 6.

They only really started losing ground to the O's when they went out West to play A's and Angels while the O's cleaned up against 2 of the worst teams in the AL (Boston and Texas)...

After the All-Star break the O's go out west while the Jays play Boston and Texas. Just sayin'

I doubt the Red Sox outbid the Dodgers or NYY for Lester in the off-season.

It also feels like behind-the-scenes tampering if they have a wink*wink agreement for him to re-sign in the off-season, I'm sure MLB wouldn't be too happy with that.

I'm seeing chatter on Twitter that the David Price to Detroit deal is done, but nothing official yet. If true, that's a pretty nasty rotation.

ETA: There it is.

http://www.freep.com/article/20140731/SPORTS02/307310154/detroit-tigers-andrew-miller

Quote
Report: Detroit Tigers acquire lefty David Price in blockbuster deal

The Detroit Tigers have made a huge splash on MLB trade deadline day.

They acquired Tampa Bay Rays left-hander David Price, a 4-time All-Star and 2012 Cy Young winner, in a blockbuster deal, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

The rest of the moving parts in the deal have not yet been reported. The trade deadline is 4 p.m. EST.

Price, who doesn't become a free agent until after next season, is 11-8 with a 3.11 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. He has 23 walks and 189 strikeouts in 170.2 innings this season. He also has a career ERA of 3.18 and 1.14 WHIP.

Price, 28, is a 4-time All-Star and won the 2012 AL Cy Young Award.

If true, the move would be a counter, of sorts, to the blockbuster deal this morning between the Oakland Athletics, who have the best record in the AL, and the Boston Red Sox. The A's acquired lefty Jon Lester in the deal to bolster their strong starting rotation, but parted with outfielder Yoenis Cespedes in the deal.

If Price comes to Detroit, he'd join a rotation that features at least Max Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez and Justin Verlander.

More to come.

Enjoy!  O's-Jays games in Toronto always seem to bring the fireworks.  I was starting to get worried, but our bats woke up a little last night against the Nats.  I'm ready to option Chris davis to Single A.   :frustrated:

If we can somehow take 2/3 from the Jays and 2/3 from the Yanks this weekend, we'll be in pretty darn good shape going forward.  Last night was a great start and it's nice to see the bats finally come alive again.  The local radio shows have been preaching patience because of all of the really good pitching we've faced lately.  That proved correct, starting against the Nats even though Roark has been on fire lately.

Sucks losing at home like that, one mistake by Happ and that was the game.  Dealing with al the injuries and a crazy short bench basically makes games 6 innings because opposing managers spend the last 3 throwing lefty/righty match ups at us.

Also, in 71 high leverage plate appearances at home in the seventh inning or on the Jays have 2 walks.

Enjoyed the view from the CF restaurant.

Looks like you had fun at least. I've been to 6 games this year, haven't seen a win. As for one mistake....that happened to us against Cano last week. It happens. Happ just happened to make that mistake against the hottest guy in our line up right now. I've got nothing but respect for this year's Jays. You all are really dangerous.....

TV with an antenna will get you the Fox games.
I also used the mlb.tv for postseason last year (I also use it all year round).  saw every game I wanted to see.  it was weird as they gave you a bunch of different camera angles to choose from, but it got the job done.

Sucks losing Melky but...

It forces Gibbons to put Bautista in the 2-hole where he should always hit.

Come September/October veterans who've played 130+ games are injured, playing injured or fatigued - having kids come up and fill those gaps can be a positive.

Jays have to go on a run here starting with TB, then Baltimore and Seattle.

it goes by your IP address of where you are logging in from.  if you are in Denver, you'll be able to watch Os games no problem.  if you were in southern Cal and tried logging in from a hotel, you wouldn't be abel to get the Angels game even if your address is registered as denver.  it is all centered around your IP location.

This is the lolziest thing you've ever said in this thread. You've really bought into "MLB broadcaster narratives 101" here.

I suppose you believe that grit and determination are things that win pennants?
Do you also believe that certain players have a closer mentality and they can't pitch in non-save situations because they're not fired up?

Try reading Fangraphs instead of whatever local hack the Baltimore Sun hires to write game recaps.

Which "group of individuals" are you referring to, the team with the best record through the first 60 games of the season that was still in first place as late as July?

One mediocre month and one shitty month was the difference between the O's and the Jays this season - I hope you've enjoyed the once-a-decade ride from your O's this year because there is about 2 years out of 10 when the Yankees or Red Sox don't win the AL East.

Major League Baseball has suspended Marcus Stroman six games for intentionally throwing at the Orioles' Caleb Joseph during Monday's game.
Stroman has maintained his innocence and will appeal the suspension, but it was pretty clear that he did it on purpose. With expanded rosters, he could just drop the appeal after his next scheduled outing Saturday and simply get a couple extra days off between starts.

Whether he's over-rated by the media or not, he's been the most successful scandal-free athlete since you were born, so of course his final home-game is a big deal.

Even some of my fellow O's fans were talking last night about "I can't even be upset they lost like that."

Excuse me?

Yeah, it was good for Jeets and the fans and the unaffiliated, I get that, but what self-respecting Orioles fan would not have been upset by that loss? The O's still are going for home-field advantage here; I would take much more pleasure in achieving that than whatever fuzzy feelings I might get from Jeter's game-winner.

I was pumped when Jones and Pearce hit those homers to even send it to the bottom of the ninth. Pumped because I wanted Baltimore to win, not because I wanted to see Jeter win it.

Also, everyone should check out Olbermann's recent bit on Jeter. I've long maintained he's one of the more overrated players of his (or any?) generation. I'm not saying he was bad. Or even average. Just very overrated. Like how Hicks feels about 2/28/03.

If people start calling you overrated, it means you've really made it far in the sports world.

Wish I could've stayed up to watch the end of that KC game. Had to shut it down in the 7th I think when it looked like Oakland had things under control. Times like this I miss living in the central time zone.

All playoff games should start at 6:15EST.

Isn't it better if less interested people miss the first few innings rather than the end?

How many kinds under 13 were up and watching that last night? What should have created 10,000 childhood memories was undone by MLB and the networks inability to contemplate logical scheduling start times.

West coast sports fans are used to earlier starts. How many viewers do you lose with a 3:15pm start vs 5:10?

Compare that to the number of east coast viewers you'd lose between 1am and 11pm.

I agree and think this is why some sports lose popularity.
forget about 13 year olds.  some 38 year olds had to work today and be productive and didn;t get to see the end.

I was kidding. That was a shot at west coast "fans" who only care about sports when their team is in the playoffs and its fashionable.

6:15 is a little early but I agree with the premise.

I'll give you a mulligan on that post Erik; you may edit without penalty.

Now is that brief window where we also get to bitch about games coming on too early -- with four division series happening they have to spread all the games out to avoid overlaps. (Which in and of itself doesn't make much sense to me, except that I'm sure it means MLB cares more about a nationwide theoretical viewing audience than it does the two teams' actual fanbases.)

So today's Orioles game starts at 5:30 -- OK, so I won't have to stay up late, that's nice. Still will have to sneak out of work early and might not even make the first pitch. At least my boss is out today.

Game 2 tomorrow is at noon. What the fuck is this, the World Cup?

God help me if Baltimore doesn't sweep (game 3 is Sunday so no problems there) and the clincher ends up being right smack in the middle of a work day next week.

QuoteNats fans use Phish chant to cheer catcher Wilson Ramos

If you caught a Seattle Seahawks game last season (or if you've ever traveled around the country selling grilled cheeses out your backpack at Phish shows), you might recognize a chant that's catching on in D.C. this postseason.
Nationals fans have started cheering for the team's starting catcher, Wilson Ramos, by repurposing the classic chant used at Phish concerts for the past two decades. (The concept is pretty simple: every time Phish starts to play their song "Wilson", Phish fans chant, "WIL-SON! WIL-SON! WIL-SON!")

Last year, Phish frontman Trey Anastasio suggested that the 12th Man up in Seattle adopt the chant to cheer starting quarterback Russell Wilson. The Seahawks went on to trounce the Broncos in the Super Bowl and Wilson landed a gig writing for Derek Jeter, so the chant seems to have worked out.
Nats fans should hope they're onto something because their backs are against the wall as Bryce Harper and Co. head to San Francisco down two games to none.

If Gordon had hustled out of the box, maybe the 3rd base coach sends him and the game goes to extras or ends on a play at the plate.

Would have been so awesome.

I've had Bumgarner in a Fantasy keeper league for years, it was nice to see him do well.

I thought they would have dug a little deeper in their wallets to keep Cruz but I dont know.

Kinda thought Markakis was going to leave this season anyways, but Cruz we should have kept.
from what I read yesterday they are going to try and get a ree agent to replace the outfield position. And looking at making trades to fill the others....either way looks like this season is going back to the norm for the Os  :-(

Have you seen the projections? They're not kind to your defending American League East champion Orioles. PECOTA has them at 78 wins, last in the East. ZIPs has them at 79 wins, last in the East. Buck Showalter's mom has them at 120 wins, first in the East, but nobody seems interested in citing her projections model.

Actually, I made that up about Showalter's mom, but the veteran skipper was en route to visit her when we spoke on the phone the other day. Showalter, as lively as ever, embraces all the Orioles hate taking place in the world of projections.
"I see where everybody's picking us, and that's fine," he said. "I would, too, I guess, with all the money spent in Boston, Toronto and New York. But you know what? It's a lot more fun the way we do it."
