The energy cost of blockchain based currencies and other NFTs is staggering.

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-01-26/is-bitcoin-mining-worth-the-environmental-cost

Agree that this is less than ideal, but what is the environmental/energy cost of traditional currency, printing money, keeping it in circulation, etc.?

I read this week that current bitcoin energy draw equals the current solar power capacity. Reports last year compared it to the output of 7 nuclear power plants. This draw isn't one time, it only increases over time. That power is necessary for it to simply exist. I've yet to see any argument for these currencies that justifies this other than "I'm rich now" and anyone who tries to use that defense is definitely an asshole.

I'm not a crypto-evangelist (nor am I as crypto-rich as I wish I was), but one dearly held argument for them focuses on their decentralized, nongovernmental nature, which many people like as representing a sort of "stick it to the man" ethos, but also as a kind of populist insulation against govt manipulation and malfeasance.

Sounds good if it wasn't literally accelerating to the destruction of the planet.

No surprise that crypto-currency is so popular with libertarians.

Beavers are at it again, and not just the mail

I had no idea that beaver chewing was uniquely Canadian; let alone that it was a problem.

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

Good news for all you druggies:  https://www.sciencealert.com/a-small-amount-of-laughing-gas-could-be-a-future-therapy-for-treating-depression

Quote
Psychoactive drugs, historically taken at parties, are increasingly looking to be suitable tools for treating mental illness.

In phase III clinical trials, MDMA has emerged as a highly effective treatment for post traumatic stress disorder, and in recent studies, oral ketamine has been found to significantly lower suicidal ideation.

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is now joining the ranks. A new trial on 24 participants in the United States has found a low dose of this gas can relieve symptoms of depression otherwise resistant to current drugs.

Even better, the benefits appear to last for several weeks and come with very few side effects.
