But for serious, I don't even know what to say about that setlist.  SAW IT AGAIN TIMES TEEWWWWW???!??????  Hey!  They Saw It again!!!!!!!     HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

I'm curious to see the number of fatalities caused by Walfredo.  I'm not sure I would have lived.  Oh but that was the easiest call ever.  Forget that, if you didn't know they were going to play Walfredo, you suck at 3.0 Phish.

EDIT:  Is it just me, or doesn't is seem like they've played YEM every show for like, a week straight?

Trey looks like he had a blast the last two nights. He's having fun and so am I.

I wasn't even sopposed to be here! I had a job interview in Philly an Friday, so the first thing i did was change my flights to come back tomorrow. So Lucky.

I went  when Alumni was played too ironic. Now it's off to the philly airport.

sets flowed together really nicely I thought - me and my buddies found a spot down low on the lawn that was really empty. rocked OUT the whole night, tons of dancing room...

fun times! way different vibe than last night.

The best Phish shows of tour are rarely the first ones.....just sayin'. Tours generally get better.....not worse. Save last year after the summer West Coast swing. But last year will soon never be talked about again. No matter what people say, last year sucked, bad.

The Piper is about the only good thing with this show.....and even that is kinda, meh?...took 9 minutes to get to the interesting groove, and then FREE WILLY!!!!....wtf...  then the groove gets left in the dust for the '99 Trey lick.....it's almost as if they couldn't decide as a group which way the groove should go.....the 12min mark, wtf? that should have been the groove the WHOLE time....way to screw the pooch boys!

The Ghost @ 9 minutes in length is pathetic....

Mellow Mood is nice....the Gin is standard fare, boring jam though......Saw it again, I hope I never.....Jumpin Jack Flash is jumping like an amputee.....My Soul......

Shit all it needed is a Tweezer and it wouldda been a show chock full 'o hate from me.

This one gets one thumb up, one thumb down from me.

Had a whirlwind of an epic weekend in MD. Got up at 4:30 this morning to catch our flight back. So here are just some initial, sleep-deprived impressions:

Walfredo - Cute. Home-town shout-out. Page even provides a capable drum fill or two.
Mellow Mood - Great summertime "opener."
Stealing Time - I like this song. So there.
Divided Sky - Fine.
Tela - Treat.
My Soul - Rock out. The old lady likes this one too.
Ginseng Sullivan - Yes, thank you.
Sample - I swear Trey took the outro solo out further than I've heard it done before. For whatever that's worth.
Bathtub Gin - On fire. It looked as if Trey was shaking his hands out afterwards, as though to chase the pain of the preceding shreddage. Slow it down with
Brian and Robert
Antelope - Feisty.

Wilson - It was fine. No big set-opening jammer, I guess.
Meatstick - Didn't see this coming right here. Admirably jammed; this was no throwaway Meatstick. It's around this point in the show when I start to imagine what it must be like for people down front and center who are tripping their balls off. I like to think about how they would be reacting to the music. Japanese lyrics here would have seemed wild, I'm sure. Sounded like they were starting to go somewhere, the beat changes then it falls out and Trey is strumming the opening to
Saw It Again - At the time the transition sounded like it might have been a little rough. Will listen again before passing judgment on why/how. Anyway this was a real mean little piece of psychedelia played underneath the repetitively intoned refrain. Again I think to my hypothetical psychonaut in the pavilion and he's probably shared shitless about now. As things die down along comes
Piper - Need to hear this again. It sounded like there was a lot going on. Like the band kept changing ideas, rapidly. Honestly I can't tell you at this moment how well it worked.
Ghost - I can tell you I thought there was a good chance we'd hear this tonight. Very early on in the jam Mike (who sounded awesome all night, by the way) develops a little idea and they rage on that for a while then right into
Jumpin Jack Flash - Can't quite comment on the quality of this performance. It was fun and novel to see. The end dropped into some mean psychadelic shit and back for a reprise of
Saw It Again - Fun to see these quite capable transitions.
Contact - This is off Junta. So I like it.
YEM - Surely did not expect this. Thought it had been played too recently. But this was especially welcome since right before the show we had picked up from the airport a friend who's living overseas now, and with whom I had gone to see all my first shows years ago. He doesn't really listen to Phish these days but wanted to come to the show and see some folks. He mentioned wanting them to play YEM and I said I doubted they would. And they did anyway. Jumpin Jack Flash teases in the jam were cool. Drums and bass = badass. And the vocal jam was actually very well done. Like actual, real jamming in there, including the anticipated Saw It Again references.
Fire - If curfew's 11 then they were already about 10 minutes past that so I figured this would be a quick encore.

All in all I had a great time. Got to see some other friends I don't see much these days including some guys I'd not seen in years. Looking very much forward to revisiting some of these major jams (Gin, Piper, Ghost) and the 2nd set overall.

Oh yeah, and we got to see the Orioles beat the Nationals earlier in the day. So take that, Nationals fans.

Set 1 sbd thoughts.

Walfredo: Thought it was bad at the show, but I was wrong - it's terrible. But charming.
Mellow: If Phish doesn't do funk they sure as hell don't do reggae. Fun live, but I'll pass now.
Stealing: got a blank space where my comments should be
Divided: a couple stumbles, but an enjoyable version
Tela:  :music: Nice job navigating the final section
Soul: Loathed trhis by end of 97, but enjoyed it here. Guess I'll be ready again in 2023
Ginseng: overheard in crowd My mother was a Mississippi delta ho. Freaking priceless.
Sample: the clean sample is extinct, but this one was at least confident. Unlike earlier 3.0 when Trey sounded like a drunk frat guy failing at guitar hero...
Title: Re: 06/27 - MPP - Columbia, MD - Post-Show Review And Discussion Thread
Post by: Alumni on June 28, 2010, 03:01:17 PM
Gin: Forgot / didn't notice how ugly this jam was at the start.  :-(  Peak is one of my favorites in 3.0 for this song, tho

B+R: Nice as a tweener song

Antelope: Trey's sound kind of wanders around as he goes thru the gears. Maybe the clutch was slipping? Outro is nailed.

Very enjoyable 1st set. Loved catching Tela and Gin and Antelope both finished strong.

Set 2 thoughts in a couple hundred miles...

So honestly, I got a little too drunk last night and wasn't able to "critically listen" very well.  Getting all  :beerbang: at shows is kinda stupid....... oops........ I had fun but just wish I could have had a better attention span  :wtu:

Anyways, I was super PSYCHED on the setlist.... TELA!!!!!!!!.......(I don't think anyone has pointed out, last night had 11 first timers for 2010, and 5 of those being first timers for 3.0!)  but really, the playing was pretty subpar imo.  I guess the Piper was the jamming highlight, but even that wasn't the best.  Lots of sloppy Trey really......

Here's to hoping the southern run HEATS up like I expect it too!  :beers: :beers: :beers:

the second set is fun but not exactly genius. piper is good and i saw it again gets pretty weird in the jam. but ghost is fairly boring and jumpin jack flash is a mess.

all told, seems par for the course currently. they're certainly getting creative with setlists and having fun, but nothing in this show is as good as that chalkdust.

Three songs in and I thought I was smelling BS. Walfredo (which I like) is only a measure of the band's playfulness.. not their playing. Mellow Mood was sweet but choppy. Stealing Time is rawk but standard. It's about midway through Divided Sky that the show tightens up a bit.

I'm going to rate this somewhere just above the first MPP but below Camden 1&2.

That Chalkdust is actually the Bowie I've been waiting for them to play since they got back together.

Just to be difficult, I'll disagree about the rest. Chalk Bowie Torture was great, and 2001 was a ton of fun, but the show as a whole was really up n down. Just my 2 shillings...

Set 2 and overall:

This is easily my favorite of the 5 shows I've seen in 3.0. And I'm not sure that I would trade that night for anything else so far this tour.

I know some folks are down on 2nd set Wilsons, but if it opens...so what? It was fun.

Meatstick was my first, I think. Used to hate on it pretty harshly, but it was fun in person. Jedi, wherever you are, I was wrong and you were right.  :beers:

SIA was raucous. I'll leave Piper to others. I never really listen that closely - it just washes over me. I'll take a flub or 2 here over Reba any day. It was cool that they stretched this one out, but I probably prefer R&R and Tweezer from Sat, or Camden CDT.

As for the rest of the set...sometimes really fun shows don't translate well to tape, and shows you think are kind of ordinary end up sounding fantastic. I think that's especially true w/ Phish's goofy sets (SIA quotes in Contact!)

On tape it probably would have sounded better if they had been less literal about it...kept JJF to a tease, like Moby Dick on Sat...or if they had a ghost/flash mashup like Camden 2001. Then they could have had fun with it and returned to a ghost jam. But by going for the whole enchilada we get a short ghost, a weak JJF, and a random wtf SIA coda. This is on tape. Live, there was no 9min ghost. Just a 16min blob of rawsome.

Having heard both MPPs again today, I think I almost prefer Sat II to Sun II. But Sun I destroys Sat I.

So what's the consensus?  Is this on the level of Camden2 and SPAC2 or quite a bit below that?

below, i'd say.

the second set is fun but not exactly genius. piper is good and i saw it again gets pretty weird in the jam. but ghost is fairly boring and jumpin jack flash is a mess.

all told, seems par for the course currently. they're certainly getting creative with setlists and having fun, but nothing in this show is as good as that chalkdust.

Um they played your namesake dude, and played it well.

Yeah, so I hear.  :-P :frustrated:

I hadn't even gotten to the parts about them playing both my userid and my (then) avatar in the same set.

No argument, Camden2 was great. Easily one of the best of the tour. Ups-and-downs are the story of 3.0 in a nutshell. MPP wasn't immune to it, either. Basically, I think it's like splitting hairs as to which one ya prefer. Tomato, tomahto, etc. I think MPP as a lil more consistent overall. But you can't argue w/ Camden's high points.

No doubt I'm also influenced by having missed MPP09. The whole ruckus about song selection . . . whoosh . . . right over my head. Totally irrelevant for me.

Show by show comparisons are hard for me to really pull off until tour's over, so I can compare a show to the overall "tour performance level."  Plus tour being over allows me to avoid the "post-show fluff hangover" that often happens coming off the exciting experience that seeing Phish can be.

Having said all that, I thoroughly enjoyed night 2 as a different experience than night 1.  From the choices made in the setlists to the playing, I thought Phish took chances and it payed off in spades for my personal enjoyment.  Only time will tell if it was "epic br4h" or just a "damn good time in the summer heat."  God knows I wouldn't trade either nights in for a revisit to MPP '09.

I walked away feeling lucky to get a pair of shows like that practically in my backyard.

Ouch.  Walfredo, where did you go?  Stay in Vegas.

I'd have loved it were I there, no doubt about that, but sheesh...

Mellow Mood I had to cut after just under 3 minutes.  I just don't like the song; drags on, felt like 3 minutes was enough.

Stealing Time: cue signature PH/3.0 Trey licks.  Definitely better versions of this song, although this isn't bad; just not great.  This song needs some Trey-shred for ser.  Once Trey decides to ditch his mid-tempo David Gilmour/Jerry playing, this one is going to scorch eyebrows quite regularly.

Divided Sky; I definitely put this combination in a "what if" setlist in a post I made here, somewhere...  kinda funny.  Fishman seemed really on point through Mary.  Trey jumping flub, but otherwise its pretty solid.  Trey seemed pretty into it, though, with his scrape-slide thingy ending the section where Fishman plays the off rythm, before the middle quiet section.  Later half, before The Note sections, seemed a little shaky, but no major flubs anywhere.  Trey struggles with the jam, and theres the whammy pedal....  told ya; every fucking song.  I'm calling no Divided Sky during fall tour anywhere, also.

Tela; plunky Mike.  Page sounds real good.  Harmonies didn't sound too bad either.  Trey struggles a bit in the middle solo it seems...  I'd take it though.  End section definitely not as solid as Miami, but its not bad; little shaky at first, but Trey picks it up by the end.  HOLY SHIT!!!! MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!!  NO WHAMMY PEDAL!!!!!!!!!!

i'm done for now now.

The Piper and Ghost were fire. The Piper especially, the only point of the show where I really wanted to just .
The Ghost was cool, but died early.
I can only keep thinking about Pipers of old though. When are they going to slow it the F down a little bit, and THEN build to that kind of climax?
Had they started that slow, and really built it up, it would have probably been the best jam of the tour so far for me.

Finally got a second listen to the Piper. At the time it kind of felt like it was all over the place, and I couldn't tell how organized the chaos was. On tape there are parts that a little disjointed, and Trey tries to pull off some descending off-key thingy that mostly bombs, but the jam improves near the end and I'll give the combined effort and intent relatively high marks for 3.0.

I will say that it's seemed to me the band has gotten a little better about injecting some melody and rhythmic structure into their end-of-jam ambient dissolves. And a little extra patience, too.

This piper is only all over the place for big red, once he abondons his "new" tone around the 11 min mark he sounds great, fish absolutley destroys this piper!  Trey eases off the gas and then page and mike really push the void.   It's a shame, they get it after 11 min then do the ambeient outro thing again, luckily into ghost, or finally into ghost!

Set II:

Wilson - Fine.  Better here than anywhere else.  The presence of a Set II Wilson indicates only 2 things, each of which are vastly, vastly opposite:  either A) ensuing madness or B) ensuing anti-jamness.  This is the former.

Meatstick - felt a little sloppy, but wasn't bad.  Need to play it more to get it tighter, is all.  But holy hell, the outro jam!!!  I fucking LOVED that shit.  After the Japanese lyrics; i don't know why, but I loved that.  The segue is kinda pretty garbage, but i fucking loved that outro jam.  Trey's middle solo may be one of the better examples of his whammy playing.

Saw It Again - sloppy as all hell, but definitely a deep, weird jam.  That Phish can pull of crazy weird shit like this again is a definitely good sign.  I really wish they'd have been tighter with the song itself, because I love the song.  Both parts were flubbed... the start of the song, and the start of the evil coda.  But hey...  Meatstick -> Saw It Again will never happen again, I guarantee that.  So... I'll take it.  Plus the end of the Meatstick jam raged.  The segue into Saw It Again was almost there... but Trey dropped that for some real bad reason.  I don't even know... he just sucked horribly at playing guitar there for about 10 seconds.  I think he's trying to play the chord progression with the whammy pedal........     anyway, this got deep and weird.  I approve.

Piper - ehh...   fast forward to the 2nd half.  What is it... the 10 minute mark?  Somewhere around there...    Admittedly, Trey does try doing some interesting things with this pedal in the first half, but its really ehh...    AND CHILL THE FUCK OUT WITH THE VERSES DAMNIT.  Jesus fucking christ.  You start out playing it at the speed that it should take a minute or 2 to get to...   and you don't even fade the vocals in.  Only 1 minute before the lyrics start.  And they start on the "1".  This song no longer has the fades and swelled structural beauty that it used to.  SPAC elucidates the new Piper, playing the chord pression: 12x intro, 8x verse, 4x break, 4x verse, 4x shout verse -> Trey high note.  All evenly spaced, and separate.  Oh well.

At least on this version, Trey is thinking.  And they play around with the intro a little bit, hanging on the G for a couple repeats, almost like they used to.  But Mattstick wasn't kidding about the out of key playing....    Theres nuggest of awesome splattered here and there, but it doesn't really get interesting for any sustained amount of time until 10:40.  And then it actually features Trey playing guitar, not guitwhammy.  ANd he plays some fucking awesome lines here for the next minute or so.  Then it dies down again into some cool Pay Jorgan-age.  I love the interaction from here though...  this is fucking SICK.  we need more jams like this!!!!!!!!!!  this is like '99-'00 Phish with more a more present Pay Jorgan.  I like this.  Plus, Trey starts playing with this tremolo unit he splooged over all the time PH but which he has completely ignored until now, I believe.  This is fucking awesome.  Until Trey ruins it.  He goes for his whammy pedal, to play high octave shit with a 5th interval (it sounds like) but he fucking kills the timing of everything, and forces the band to shift awkwardly to his tempo.  almost recovers, but holy shit, epic jam kill right there.  Page mimics him, and tries to save it, but...   I don't fucking get him sometimes.  its like he's TRYING to play out of time.  He's trying to play super-triplets, it sounds like but he isn't tight, and it kinda fucked everything.  Ugh.  God damnti.  Another epic shit derailed.  It drifts into a kinda cool space for the end...  at least its a cooler version of Ambient Outro.  I like Fishman here a lot.  Trey seems to try to find a melody to play with, and I swear I heard a 7/10/99 Chalkdust tease.  Okay, this is kinda cool.  Could have gotten here a lot better-ly, but...  okay, another snip off into Ghost....

Ghost - HOLY FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!   WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!   Trey exists!!!!  Our hero momentarily steps out from behind the Shadow of the Whammy to give remind us that there is a human being behind the pedal.  Fuckin RAGING Ghost.  Does fall short, only because they could have continued raging this jam harder and longer, but holy shit this fucking rocked so hard.  This is probably my favorite Ghost of 3.0 maybe.  Albany had some wild moments and was over 20 minutes long, but this Ghost features old-skool Trey, and i like that.  4:41 - 4:44:  TREY"S 1999 LICK!!!!!!

Jumpin Jack Flash - I thought this was the Satisfaction guitar riff?  Oh well, whatever...  I appreciate the spontaniety of this; the segue wasn't bad at all, and it seemed appropriate.  The Ghost was cut off before it fully matured, but it wasn't a blue ball.  It seemed to me more like Trey just kinda fell into this, and they decided to go with it

Saw It Again Reprise - not really Saw It Again, more like a JJF jam with the song's refrain...  but way cool nonetheless.

Contact - segue was kinda not great; kinda killed the deep mood, but this was alright.  I love Contact, but didn't really here.

YEM - every-other-night'd/every-second-show'd/last-non-encore-song-of-a-2-night-stand'd.  Was good tho.  Nothing spectacular.  Fun.  It was YEM...  you'd have to have seen it in 2003 and 2004 to have it suck.

Overall:  Not bad.  Playful factor is high.  Personally, I can't wait until the setlists stop outperforming the playing.  Or until the playing catches up with the setlists...    Either way, when that happens...  holy crap.  Seat belt required.

the LP boards sound so sweet compared to anything else out there if you ask me - anything in the archives or anything from the last three tours ('03-'09).

Gumbo - great summary, man.........without a doubt, there's so much good about the show that is almost makes you angry because they seem so close to something extra special.    But all in all, the continuity and cohesiveness - love - in the performances is so much higher than it's been in a long, long time, even through flubs and whale calls and harsh segues.     I cannot wait to see them in August after they've broken in the 2nd leg a bit.

Everybody who comes back from a show seems to have more than the standard blast too.......people dancing like they never have.   Trey seems ecstatic and happy.......damn - he has to be close to resuming his standard leadership in jams - hopefully.

I have not had a chance for a good review, but what I enjoyed most of this night was watching the boys have a great time.  Trey was smiling from ear to ear all night.

Also, although there was some slop and maybe not the best show ever the fact that playful Phish is returning is what its all about.  The playful youthfulness, along with more time playing will bring them right back to where we want them to be, melting faces.

Ironic, given all the crap I wrote about the song when I first got to this board (it's what's wrong with Phish these days, etc.)

It was fun, dammit. I think it was the Japanese lyrics that won me over. Do Do Atamaga Shock

I've now listened back a couple times and I'm of the opinion that the moderately botched -> slash ~> from Meatstick into Saw It Again is on Fishman, not Trey. Trey had been playing the intro chords, and Fish was maintaining a beat,  for a good little bit before Fish stopped, leaving Trey awkwardly strumming by himself, before the SIA beat kicked in. I think Fish had the chance to guide this one into a smooth landing into SIA but just did not for whatever reason.

I know we tend to blame Trey for trainwreck/hasty segues, but I don't think we can hang this one on him. Things were going quite well until Fish stopped playing.

Not trying to give you (or anyone) shit, but analyzing the precision of a segue from Meatstick to Saw it again? I'm not sure I get it.

Some sets are really fluid and jazzy, and that sort of stuff really contributes to the overall effect. But 6/27 II didn't strike me as one of those times.  :-D

That set was all raucous (rock-ous?). Messy, loud, in your face raucousness. More  :beerbang: :rawk: than  :phish: :music:

I will plead guilty when it comes to occasionally over-analyzing Phish.

I think the (low) quality of the segue, and who deserved blame, was brought up here at some point. Obviously when the show was fresher, granted.

I don't really recall it chapping my hide too much at the time... but sitting here on a computer with the set playing affords ample chance to participate in such frivolous exercises.  :-D

I know what you're saying - that's why I was trying to choose words carefully.

I was just thinking - the best pizza in the country probably comes from some greasy corner shop in New York. Not the sort of place where you send a NY Times food critic . . . but that doesn't mean it isn't still the best.

That's how I think of 6/27 II, I guess. Greasy, messy, sloppy, not very good for you, but still kind of tasty. A nice break from "mature" Phish :beers:

Holy buckets!  I don't think this has ever happened to me before..... I actually liked this show BETTER upon re-listen than when I was actually there

When I was there, all I could keep thinking was how sloppy everything was..... and I was right...... but, I think I was concentrating so much on the slop that I was unable to appreciate the good things that were happening.... this second set really has that "Phish fun" vibe that I am always looking for at a show.

The entire ISIA>Piper>Ghost>JJF is pretty cool.  Sloppy, but cool.  The piper at least showed attempts of "going for it" which is what its all about. And even with the Ghost being a measly 9 minutes, I have to agree with Gumbo in that Trey is playing some great stuff towards the peak of this jam, very un-3.0-ish.  I liked it.

When I was 3 and 4 living in Maryland, my family and I went to the Phish shows up in Maine. Grew up my entire life listening to them, and since those two concerts, it took until the New Years shows last year for me to see them again, since I live in Miami now and they don't come often. Went up to Maryland with a friend to see them as a graduation present. If I thought I was a Phish Phan before, I was an idiot. Since those shows, my iTunes collection of Phish has gone from under 100 to 315, and is about to jump somewhere around 400. Those two shows were absolutely fantastic and I'm even GLAD I chose the Phish concerts over the Crossroads Festival on the same date as the first show (original reason was financial and timing). Having the full moon come over the trees in the middle of Wolfman's Brother was surreal and being under the awning area the second night was electrifying. Just when everyone around me including myself thought we were just about zapped of energy, Trey pulls out the one thing I'd been hoping for in the back of my mind ever since I downloaded his version of Izabella off of livephish.com, a Hendrix cover. Loved hearing the entire audience jolted back to life on those first couple notes!

PHISH, FOR THE LOVE OF...... PHISH, COME TO FLORIDA!! (Play at UCF like you did 15 years ago, TRUST ME I'll be there :D)

:phish:

And to those guys on the previous page analyzing every bit of minutiae from the show, enjoy the music! Every show has its faults, there's no need to scrutinize all of them, it's not like they have more than one chance to get it perfect, it's LIVE! I liked the show better live because I was there to listen to Trey make his guitar sing, and not waiting until the end of the song to make sure they segued properly. C'mon guys that's not what Phish is about!

I just listened to this Piper again, and every time I do, I like it more.

At the time, I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. Too much going on, too dense to comprehend. Clearer of mind now, I can better appreciate just how much stuff is crammed into this version, and I don't mean "crammed" in a bad way. I won't compare the sheer quality of the improvisation to your '94-'95 days, when they could accomplish far more in 12 minutes' worth of Tweezer than ever they could in 22 minutes' worth of '03 or '04... but I sure do like hearing them trying to develop multiple new ideas rapidly and on the fly from time to time.

Listening to the RMSTR now and honestly, this has got to be one of the worst 3.0 shows.

I remember not listening to these two shows so that I could listen to them on our flight to Fiji, and was all "WTF?" when I heard them.
I'm still all WTF?

3.0 has become a lot more about "the moments" rather than "the shows".

Unfortunately, these shows didn't really have any "moments".

For as much as people like to hate on this show (hey, to each his/her own), I don't think I've seen anyone directly try to hate on this Piper. Go on, I dare you.

Ok.
Piper is boring.
It sounds like every other 3.0 jam.

Agree with Aug. Lame Piper, short and went way too soon to the lyrics.

Is this not everyone's complaint with the 3.0 Pipers?  The intro is always cut too short?

Besides the maybe the Gin, I thought the Piper was the highlight of the show. Trey was all over the place, but I respected that fact that he was going for it.

JJF sucks too. They shouldve just jammed it rather than singing any verses. JJF jam would have been ill.

That's what I was thinking while listening to it last night.
Trey must have had some serious rock song blasting in his earpiece that he was jamming along to, 'cause he definitely wasn't listening to the other guys.

I think a lot of the hype with this show is just the "wow" factor of the second set, but it's a paper tiger to me.  In actuality it's sloppy as shit, and just meanders.  Oh, and the piper sucks too.

Gotta love it when someone explains how large their music collection is by telling everyone how much of item x is in their Itunes.

Quote from: Phish_Lifer on August 09, 2010, 07:45:21 PM
Since those shows, my iTunes collection of Phish has gone from under 100 to 315, and is about to jump somewhere around 400.

I know, it's like banging Terry's mom.  It should never be mentioned, and under no circumstances should any form of a high five be involved when mentioning it.

I'm not clear on what "every other 3.0 jam" sounds like, but assuming we're talking about the rather common formula of song -> rock jam -> ambient breakdown -> bouncy electronica-like sequence, then no, this Piper does not sound like that.

Sheesh, you'd think in an era constantly derided for its stagnation and lack of creative jamming, there'd be at least a little credit given when the band is trying for once to dynamically create spontaneous music (commentary on success of execution aside), but I guess not...

It sounds like every other 3.0 jam because Trey jams in (literally) 9th chords and strums "rhythmically" to the beat of the rest of the band.  It's just like all of the 3.0 Drowned, and RnR.  It has that jam in it.

pfffffffffffffffft.  Logic isn't the issue here, it's a lack of understanding of hearing a band do nothing new.

Sorry dude but just because Trey is trying hard doesn't mean it's a good jam. I listened to it a few nights ago and I agree with all of the above posts. The jam is long (ish) but never develops any sort of theme and doesn't really go anywhere at all. But that's just my set of ears, I like plenty of jams that other people don't dig (see: portsmouth Gin).

I think the Portsmouth Gin has a good dose of RAWK peak to it, but that's about all I remember from it (but to me all 3.0 Gins have that hardy RAWK peak).

The whole thing builds from the start - no bs'ing around, no meandering like most 3.0 Gins. Def has "that" rawk peak, but I think they worked for it and earned it in this one. Trey's playing is kinda sloppy - he's clearly struggling, but I kind of like that about the jam. Its early summer and he's still working out the kinks. It's raw, but I really dig it.

Well, fair enough, I'm not a guitarist so I don't analyze the music from that perspective. I'm more apt to say something like this:

We had more adventuresome jamming at my daughter's birthday party where there was no music played and it wasn't even a party.
