Thought there might be a surprise in there, but nope, pretty much exactly the rumored dates minus a night at MSG.

Hmm I'll be on the east coast last week of July so possibly Philly or burgettstown.
7/30-8/2 MSG works out better if anyone else wants to throw in on a spot.

what is everyone thinking for this MSG run?  i'm in for a week, so it's either the first 5 or the last 4.  i'm thinking the first 5 will be a bit more mellow in terms of crowd size/getting tickets.  but am i nuts for skipping the last 2 nights of a 7 night run?!

I work all remote so I'd be down but first 2 nights don't work out with current beach family reunion trip.

I am trying to do 7/30-8/2 but can probably be convinced to stay the rest of the week if found somewhere to throw down.

Not sure what I'll be able to hit this summer yet but...

... This Huntsville venue looks surprisingly awesome, 8k capacity

.. And this Wilmington venue looks like... it's going to be hard to see from the lawn.  Only 7,200 capacity though so that'll be fun.

I had the exact same response.  I did the AR/AL shows last summer and pretty much wrote off returning to those areas for Phish. But this Huntsville venue is looking pretty sweet... and is much closer to Alpharetta than Wilmington if you're trying to make a run of shows happen.

These Trey vids on Instagram have been pretty great. The discussion with their monitor engineer today was super informative... to the point that I'd imagine, a person w/ no stage experience would be confused by some of the things he's discussing. It gets quite detailed. But that's great!

I think if I had a friend who was into phish back in 99-00, then moved to Panama to work in the peace corp and hasn't listened to phish since, I could pick any of these 3 MSG shows to encapsulate where phish is now and feel good about my choice.

I'm also introducing my 66year old boss to phish at his request.  I was trying to get a nice mix of the different styles of their musical journey.  Today he asked me if those songs are still how phish sounds.  I couldn't really answer him, so I set him up with my LP account and recommended last nights first set.

Yeah it's really good.  As RJ mentioned on HFPod, just after the bundle of joy section the camera stayed on fishman and he is absolutely demolishing the kit.  The drone shots are a cool addition as well.

Remember when Phish played 30+ songs per show and barely jammed at all for a few years of 3.0?

This has not been that.  They be jammin'.

21 doesn't have the consistency or the frequency of high highs. Fishman is playing stronger than he has in a while and he's never actually slouched. Page and Trey are locking in creatively more and more too.

Lately during work I've been alternating between Summer '21 and Summer '23 (Play a '21 show, then a '23...). '21 is great, but '23 blows it outta the water!!!
Title: Re: Phish Summer Tour 2023
Post by: cactusfan on September 12, 2023, 10:29:14 AM
To my ears, the jamming in '21 goes much deeper than this summer. A lot of the jams in '23 are nice, to be sure, but feel like they're skimming the surface. Seems like this year was more about first sets. Which resulted in a lot of shows where the tight first sets were better than the second sets with their sometimes long yet often not inspiring jams. The spring tour felt dirtier and more exploratory. I did like a lot of the new songs this summer, though, which often featured the darker, more textural jams I'm liking a lot these days.
Title: Re: Phish Summer Tour 2023
Post by: rowjimmy on September 12, 2023, 10:34:45 AM
I'm not the guy to rattle off dates to demonstrate a point but off the top of my head I'd say, 8/25 and 7/28 are just two of many examples of shows that go pretty hard in the second set.

That said, I don't think it matters which set goes deep and I think the band feels that way too. the traditional structures really don't matter to the band any more beyond the basic set, break, another set, encore.

That said, if they're paying any attention to structure it's showing in how they've put more into encores on this tour. I'm obligated and happy to say that this is great because they had become so rote that I was actively calling for them to be abolished.

I would say there are "higher highs" in 23, but 21 had a much higher volume of excellent jams.

I miss the old encores though, as I liked to use them to beat the crowds out of the lot after the show. I'm in my car heading home while the wooks are still 'enjoying' Show of Life!

The only time I've ever left before a  :phish:  encore was the second 2010 SPAC show when they played Tweeprise for the 4th time in 2 shows.

I tend to disagree with that "higher volume" count Jedi, but I've long known that you and I look for different things in jams.

But I also think the quality of the band is measure in more than excellent jams. remember, this band was great 30 years ago when they barely jammed! My "2023 Summer Slammers" LP playlist which showcases not just 20+min jams or even key micro-jams but also excellent set listing is nearly 25hours long. That's almost eight full shows of must-hear stuff and I didn't even include all of the Derek Trucks sit-in (which I'm gonna go back and remedy).

What a refreshing discussion happening up in here.

I did not attend any of the summer shows this year, but I feel like the spring (only saw Hollywood bowl) had some stuff that would contend with '21.  I still feel like n1 deer creek 21 was the best show I've seen since deer creek 2000.  But summer tour had some real fire this year.  I'm gonna say '23 > '21.

This might be what it comes down to for me, too, in that case. My collection of songs from '21 that I can listen to over and over again is vast. I've not found nearly as much in '23. I've still got some shows to check out, but still. I see your point that '23 has consistency and a lot of great, fluid sets, and maybe in that regard it is the better year. But in terms of single tracks, however long, that have floored me, '21 is the clear winner.

I'm in the 2021 camp. Best year of phish I've personally witnessed.

2023 has been great though. I'd say '15, '21 and '23 all have stood out in the "anything could happen at anytime" category.

I think I posted this elsewhere but it is quite amazing how there was four to six years or so of 3.0/4.0 that had VERY little jamming. There would be a couple that broke through, but I didn't have hopes of 15+ min jams for awhile there... and first set jams were practically non-existent.

Not anymore. Tons of first set jams, long jams and jams in unexpected songs. I've seen 3/4 of the only jammed out fluffheads ever in the past few years. The last two versions of MFMF had abnormal type-II jams. The list goes on....

Those are definitely the years that stand out in my mind too. It felt like after Fare Thee Well Trey was amped to start jamming again and I was hoping that upward momentum would continue, and it did to a degree, but '15 was the turning point.

^ agreed. I almost forgot the Baker's Dozen happened in 2017. That was a pretty special couple of weeks in Phishtory as well. The rest of that year, however, escapes me.

RJ, I know we diverge on jam preferences  :)

I think I'm with Cactus on this one. I've found more tracks in my 2021 locker than 2023, and the show count is basically equal right now. I'd honestly say that 2021 has the highest count of relistenable jamming from anything in 3.0/4.0

nothing in 2021 gets my coveted 🤌🏼 designation, while there are 3 from 2023, but the volume of extreme high quality is basically double in 2021.

for reference, here's the current designations I hand out:
🤌🏼 denotes epicness
🫶🏼 denotes bliss jam
🦅 denotes soaring jam
🕺🏼 denotes grooviness
😈 denotes dark jam
👩🏼🚀 denotes ambience/space jam
🤘🏼 denotes rage jam
🎶 denotes melodious jam
🪬 denotes psychedelic jam

That's another thing that was huge about '21, the realization that anything could happen at any time, and how exciting that felt. One of my favorite attended shows was the first night in SF at the start of the fall tour, where they played a great Slave--in the middle of the first set--then, after a devastating second set that included a jammed out Frankie Says, and that closed with Moma, they encored with a 20 minute Carini.

Then in Vegas, the moment they opened a second set with Ass Handed, instantly not only thinking, but knowing, "They're gonna jam out Ass Handed!" That's the kind of year it was.

I think '22 was absolutely a slump as compared to '21 and '23 but I don't think I realized how much so until things picked back up this year.

Other than the surprising reliability that sets were ~75 minutes long (with a very few exceptions) this Summer, I wouldn't say they've been especially predictable. Carini 20+ min show opener. New songs going long. MFMF stretching out. Yet another Fluffed with a jam... If you go revisit the plethora of 15-20min songs on this tour you'll find really high quality jamming that, for the most part, resolves quite well and reasonably. This as compared to the hard turns Trey was so often making throughout 3.0 is pretty fun to listen to.

Plus, if you like to go long, there's 17 20+ minute jams across 25 shows this Summer.
Bonus Stat: Twice this Summer, we got back-to-back 20+ minute jams which, for the record, has only happened 5 times before.
