okay, that 2nd set kills Hartford.  I don't give a fuck who you are.

# Line > 20 Years Later converted my girlfriend.

# Line usurps Hampton in my heart.

That was so beyond perfect...   dare I say, best jam of the tour?  Dare, I.  That was glorious on so many different wonderful levels...

that was the fulfillment of all of my Phish dreams.  That right fucking there.  We were instantly zapped, first, back to Dec '99, and then lofted straight into July '00.  Unfan-freakin-tasticable.  Galaxies destroyed.  Black hole ether dripped from speakers.  Oozing liquid gnarly.  In full flowering turquoise technicolor.  Page synths.

I...    fuck.

Glad you had a good time, Gumbo.

I thoroughly enjoyed your texts throughout the night as well.

Fuckin' Llama opener, finally..... leave it to da Phish to wait for the tour closer to bust that and Harpua out.  :rockout:

Honestly, I'm not sure I ever want to see Phish again.  That went to Full Satiation, straight into hyper-overdrive with lofty heapings of "oh no they dih-int!"

that is the Backwards Down The Number Line.

Phish opens the last set with 2 new songs, and destroys.  Saratoga laid waste.  Bodies dripping in reverse from the ceiling upside down backwards up towards the floor.  Major key-carnage madness.

they went there.  Deep.

First it became Timber, then it became Maze, then it became Slave, and then Meatstick.  All universes colided towards unity, reaching out and touching everything with a single finger, hidden behind the periphery, as reflected from a mirror.

wrong show to miss.  QFMFT.

and this completely besides the point that, not 42 seconds before the music began, I turned to the chick to my left and informed her of the impending Llama opener.  And earlier in the lot, and I believe back here yesterday, I called the Number Line set 2 opener.  YEM I had pegged for the encore, and Bowie as first set closer.  Close e-fuckin-nough.

Beyond epic.

Phish never did that to me before, in a car, or in my head, or in the setlist thread.

watch out for a name change.........     i need sustainance now.  And sleepage quanta packets.  Vibrational interconnectibility, facilitated between the silence echoing from behind the pauses between the universe's whispers and the mad-cap laughter of a gas giant roaring its magnetic exert-pull on a certain ever-volcanic rock-laden satellite orbital object.

I can't believe all that ACTUALLY just happened.  It just wouldn't fucking stop.  Everything.  They for real did EVERYTHING.  That set encompassed the large giggling blind snuffalupagus that is the entirety of Phish the being.

Hero tonight:  Page.  Phish wrung out through Pink Floyd Psychedelic Ooze-Drip Filter (now available at your local).

Looks absolutely mind-blowing. Even more of a destroyer than Hartford. Wow, I wish I would have headed out East instead of saving it all for Festival.... lame. SO JEALOUS of all of you tonight who made it, and I can't wait to hear it. I was dying for a Cavern at any of the shows I hit.
Title: Re: 08/16 - SPAC - Saratoga Springs, NY - Post-Show Discussion and Review
Post by: thechad on August 17, 2009, 03:31:32 AM
Just got back myself, really good show tonight, def one of the top shows of the summer.  The torrential down pour right before the show started really, really, REALLY sucked, mostly for my rookie move of leaving my extra shirt in the car and forgetting a spare pair of shorts for the ride home (was only an hour and a 1/2 but still it would have been better if I had not been damp since 7pm).
My only other gripe that I have about this show is that I have never had to deal with a larger number of assholes at a show, of any type, in my life than I did at this one.  It was to the point that if I every one have the option of getting a lawn seat, I'm not going.  I was totally shocked, it of course wasn't everyone or even the majority, but there were enough.  Thankfully, I blame the area, I've been to a great number of shows there and every time it seems like the crowd is getting worse and worse. But that's enough bitching.  Now on to the good stuff.

Llama: Awesome that they finally played it and that it was the opener taboot.

Moma: Nice and funky, like always, I'll always prefer Black Eyed Katy, but they're never going to play that again, so I take what I can get.

Guyute:  I'm a fanboy, I like it.

Anything But Me:  Couldn't really hear it from the bathroom

Cars Trucks Buses:  Hey now, haven't heard this one in a while.  Liked hearing it again.

CDT & Golgi:  Never going to complain about these getting played in the 1st set unless they're played terrible and they weren't. Trey got the closing riff on Golgi right at Darian, missed it tonight, but a lot closer than most this tour.

Bowie: Short, sweet, to the point and pretty decent.

Cavern:  "see CDT & Golgi"

Possum:  Hey! This one again. Played well as always, not really complaining, but they have played this a lot this summer.

Ocelot:  1st time hearing it live. Again, a good version, nothing mind boggling.

Antelope: Yet again, a good version, nothing mind boggling.

BDTLN: 1st time hearing this one live as well, I too had a pretty good feeling that this was going to open the second set, they really cohesively were able to "take this one out there."  Not like back in the day, but a good sign I feel, of what the future can hold, not just for this tune but for them playing as a whole.

20 Years Later:  Not a bad tune, not my favorite, certainly don't hate it, fit well after a nice little jam as a breather.

Halley's:  standard version, never going to hear me complain about them playing ever.

RnR:  This was the tune of the night for me, they have been playing this one a bit over the summer, but to me this was the def one of the best of the summer.  Certainly not the longest, but they came out flying with this one.  There was a discussion in a thread about how they are playing songs slower than they used to, no longer the case as far this one goes.

Harpua:  It's Harpua with a Fishman tune in the middle (a really bad one at that, hopefully it's just a one off, but it was pretty funny), what else do I have to say.

YEM:  Bookend a second set with two twenty + min. jams and one of them is a YEM, yes please.

Grind:  I like it for an encore, as long as they follow it or it has just followed something else.

I Been Around:  I thought it was funny.  Wouldn't be surprised if Fishman wrote it.

HTH: Great way to end a show/tour.

So that's what I took from tonight, good end of tour show, they certain;y kept up the momentum that started at Hartford, which is all that I was really hoping for.

Also, that "Fishman Tune" in the middle of Harpua was a cover of some lame pop song. Definitely a joke, and a one-timer

Yes, it was a Katy Perry tune, I did, unfortunately, know what it was once he got the chorus.

Not bad...had a lot of fun walkin the park before the show.....

SPAC will always be h33t.....this show had its moments, for sure.

1st set had a great vibe, and pretty decent playing all around...except for that Anything But Me....it should be titled "Anything But This".....The Possum was kinda flat....The end of Golgi...whoops! Short 'lope too....

2nd set....I dunno....it was decent.....With the exception of Harpua there isn't that much that got me pumped...The R&R was decent enough...

I'll give it a 8.5

I'm still very disappointed at the disappearence of Trey's clean tone.....

Great show! Could have done without the repeats from Darien and was lookin' for something else to close out the 2nd set with something other than YEM since we saw that at Hartford. But everything was played VERY well so I can't complain. My only beef is that some asshole stole our grill. Never thought that'd happen at SPAC. At least it was only $20 from Wal-mart.

Harpua was life changing.

Just read through the live set list thread: Thanks for the love for getting stuck out in the rain, and it certainly did rain, we're talking Walnut Creek '97 hard, just not for as long and with out as much crazy thunder and lightning.  But there was some.  It was weird, it was just lightly sprinkling with a cool breeze so the wife and I were happy for getting cooled down a bit and then the next thing I know we're running for cover.  I was soaked, but it wasn't the first time, so I could deal, the wife, however, was super pissed and was told that never again unless we have pavs.  To be honest, after dealing with all the meathead douches in the crowd that won't be an issue.

To be honest I was pleasantly surprised with the crowd on the lawn at Hartford.  People were really cool around me anyway.

It's only ever been at that venue.  The biggest fight I've ever seen was a bunch of those same type of meatheads at Horde back in '96 or '97.  They were also pissing in bottles, which isn't anything out of the ordinary, but throwing them open and in the crowd or on the stage is.  It totally hasn't sullied me to going to show, not at all, just shows at SPAC.  Which sucks more, because it's the closest shed and they pretty much throw down when they play there, even during PH.

Dude you are SO correct.  They absolutely ruined the first set for me.  This crew of douche bags who kept snorting coke and heroin off of a credit card on their seat....  they were ALL from the lawn, stubbed down by one friend, and they brought 7 people down to take up the space of 4 seats inside...   they were all sweaty and soaked, and loud, and obnoxious, and horribly horribly rude, and they all danced like those fuckin old plastic giraffe toy things that stand on a square base that you push the bottom of, and they giraffe's knees bend 'n shit cuz theyre tied up with some stretchy string.

but I was actually ashamed and embarrassed of this being the first exposure to a Phish audience for my girlfriend....    because even she herself said that she would have been probably 100% absolutely blown away and driven to the point of fan-dom that I am had it not been for those people preventing her from being able to really let go and completely lose herself in the music.

one thing I will say quickly before i head to work, is that I was kinda bummbed when Halley's ended after only like, a 12-bar jam.  They shifted twice, and then did like 8 bars in the 3rd cycle of the Circle of 5ths, and then slammed into RnR.

i thought for sure we'd be going deep Hampton '97-style.  oh well

Yeah, makes for an easy modulation.  Pay attention to Trey, you can hear him run the scales and link the changes of the key.  It's almost like he hints at what is to come.

They shifted twice, and then did like 8 bars in the 3rd cycle of the Circle of 5ths, and then slammed into RnR.

Is that what they do @ the end of Halley's? Go up through the Circle of 5ths?

Interesting, I had never taken the time to figure it out....

That's cos yer a drummer!

I remember these people - the SPAC show in the summer of 95 I had this douche shove me out of my seat because he wanted more room - I look over and he's got a wife-beater on to show off is sweet tattoo... it was a huge Anheiser Busch logo like the one below. It was at least 10 inches from top to bottom.  Wow! Needless to say, I found another row to dance.

Now on to the good stuff.

there was this one asshole guy at the darien show that i ran into....

i was with a girl who was coming to a show for her first time and this dude is coming down the row with his friends and we all have to move back to let em through (darien seats dont fold up)

first of all they were being really obnoxious and stupid but then this guy comes through last and he is standing in front of this girl while she is hunched back on the chair to let him go by.... and he stops there and starts making obnoxious jokes with his friends like a real idiot so i start nudging him like move your ass your making this girl uncomfortable here.... and he says something like yo bro dont push me guy or something like that..... i was never so close to knocking someone out at a phish show before.

he was wearing a blue jays hat and a golf shirt and he didnt not belong at a phish show.... hope this wasnt one of your buddies matt  :|

Just got home. Its been a long and wonderful 4 days. It was great to catch up with some of y'all along the way. FYI, Aug is the best driver a tagalong could ask for.
I cant really comment on last nights show, seeing as how I remember very little of it.
But I know I had a hell of a good time. Like, epically good.
We crammed 18 wonderful heads (most of whom I had never met before) into the back of a Uhaul van and hired a driver to take us back to the campground. We then proceeded to tear it up until the sun came up.
Tickets=180
Hours slept since Fri=12
Spiritual cleansing=Priceless

Fucking great weekend

Birdman's right--it was a fucking great weekend even though I saw exactly zero 'paugers. Like an idiot, I let my phone die Saturday night and traveled without my charger.

But yes, the playing IMO realizes the promise of the setlist. BDTNL and R'n'R both had long, solid jams.

Lots of coked-up meathead types where I was on the lawn, too.

i was completely blown away by the amount of people snorting stuff at this show.  it was actually disconcerting.

like, the row that I was in, Sec 7 Row S, and the row immediately in front of, and behind us, were packed to the gills with people sticking straws into little baggies, and then holding it around for their friends to put their fingers into, and then put them in their mouths.

I'm assuming it was coke, seeing as A) you wouldn't do that with heroin and B) if you're doing that with Molly, you are an idiot.

It seriously killed the first set for me.  I fucking hate those people.  Ugh.  I, too, have never been closing to losing it on somebody at a show.

what I want to know is how all these tools got tickets.

i was meaning the whole "stick my finger in your bag and put it in my mouth" thing they were all doing...   you're not going to get enough powder on your finger to actually A) start rolling or B) continue rolling.

Unless it was 100% uncut molly...   which I HIGHLY doubt...   but if so....  well, i don't even know.

Post by: Gumbo72203 on August 18, 2009, 12:29:48 AM
anyway....   you guys will like the flawlessness of this 2nd set.  I don't know the song THAT well, but to my ears, I didn't detect a single flub during Harpua, and Trey ACTUALLY FINALLY nailed You Enjoy Myself.  I couldn't believe it.

I actually turned around to everybody around me and was like "He's doing it!!!  He's not fucking it up!!!  AHHH!!!!"

you might notice the "flub" during the 2nd-to-last section before Nirvana Space, where Trey does the triplets way high up on the neck and Fishman flips the beat around underneith.  However, unless my eyes deceived me, that "flub" was just Fishman dropping a stick.

but i don't care what anybody says, this is the set of the tour.  I had hoped it could happen...  I believed they could do it, but still did not expect them to COMPLETELY, 100% fully satiate my Phish jones.  That was a tall fucking order, let me tell you...  Hampton left me more than less than satisfied.  Yes, I saw them finally, but...  the music was not together.  Fluff and Sky were the best, and there were many moments I really liked, but on the whole, I was not satisfied at all.

Dana gives me shit about it at work all the time, lol...  because he's like "Dude, you finally saw Phish!  and you hated it!"  lol

but yeah...   NOW I REALLY fucking get it, what you guys must have experienced on a nightly basis back in the day.....  where you left a show having been completely and utterly satisfied, where nothing they could have done would have been better than what they just did, where everything was absolutely PERFECT and you wouldn't want to have had them do even one little thing differently.

I know that feeling now.  Its funny, because right after 20 Years Later started, all I kept thinking was "I WANT THAT NUMBER LINE BACK, DAMNIT."  I wanted SOOO badly to be back in the middle of that jam.  THAT is precisely all that I'd ever dreamed Phish could be.  It was fucking awesome.  It wasn't a hose-rage shred fest, but it had intensity, and urgency, and motion.  It wasn't a noodle-eee-doo jerk off sesh, but it was propulsive.  It was going places.  It WENT so many places.

I just...   man.  That was IT.  That was everything.  If that doesn't completely prove that Phish is back, well...  fuck.  Go suck on the tail pipe of that classic '67 Jaded Hater with the hemi upgrade you rev up and jerk off to every night.

Did you guys catch the change in the Llama arrangement?  First, Trey did Page's organ lick that ends the intro and brings in the full band.  And then after the first chorus, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Trey erroneously start jamming early, skipping "KRANNNNGGGG llama taboot taboot....  KRANNNNGGGGG  llama taboot taboot...." or is that only done once at the end?

I still have to listen to the Llama a few more times before I can make comment on it.  I was psyched to hear it last night and when I heard it I really didn't know what to think about it.  It's different.  Didn't sit quite right with me at the time.  When he started to sing it seemed like everyone slowed the song down... a lot.  Then it sped back up.  It was just weird, I dunno

Back to work this morning after the 12.5 hr ride home from SPAC.
Here's my quick synopsis of the show:
Set 1: Llama - Finally, and I had bought a Llama shirt in the lot before the show so as soon as I heard the opening line, I was pretty pumped.  Solid version.
Moma - Some funk and has always been a fun tune for me
Guyute - Well played, was hoping to catch one in the 2 shows I saw
Anything But Me - No offence to Trey but have never been much of a fan of this tune
Cars Trucks Buses - Excited as my travel partner and I had been talking about this tune on the way down
Chalk Dust Torture - Standard, but rocking
Golgi Apparatus - so excited to hear this, Trey botched the ending a bit, but still loved it
David Bowie - One of my favs, shorter than I'd hoped but had me bouncing til the end
Cavern - Sang my heart out
Possum - Was hoping to catch as I knew it was being played quite a bit throughout the Summer
Ocelot - 1st time hearing it live and loved, 2nd favourite new tune
Antelope - Great end to the 1st set
Set 2: Backwards Down the Number Line > Twenty Years Later - Holy shit, F___ing unbelievable jam, floored me.
Halley's > R&R - Loved both of these tune but will agree with Gumbo on his assessment of this Halley's
Quote from: Gumbo72203 on August 17, 2009, 02:40:45 PM
one thing I will say quickly before i head to work, is that I was kinda bummbed when Halley's ended after only like, a 12-bar jam.  They shifted twice, and then did like 8 bars in the 3rd cycle of the Circle of 5ths, and then slammed into RnR.

i thought for sure we'd be going deep Hampton '97-style.  oh well

Harpua > I Kissed A Girl* > HYHU > Harpua - Wow, just wow, I can't believe I catch 2 shows this tour and I get a Forbin, Mockingbird, Icculus and now Harpua, shit yeah.  Got a little tired of the Katy Perry tune and wished they had only done a verse/chorus thing instead of the whole tune but I won't complain too much.
You Enjoy Myself - Good version, didn't grab me quite as much as the Hartford YEM, loved Mike's solo
Encore: Grind, I Been Around*, Highway To Hell - Loved the HTH finish and it was kinda fun seeing as we had caught AC/DC the weekend before and they played that in their encore  :-D

Had some fun times cruisn' the lot preshow with MB and RR, met up with BM and Aug, good to meet you guys.

OK, I know Im really out of the loop when it comes to pop music, but I totally thought "I Kissed a Girl" was some light poppy tune that I remember from some cute chick back in the 90's or something.  This "I Kissed a Girl" is not what I thought it was.

Also, it seems like a really shitty song.  I guess Im gonna try to find the original on youtube or something because Ive never heard this one.

Still on page 3 of the thread, havent listened to anything but Harpua yet, either.

Still on page 3 of the thread, havent listened to anything but Harpua yet, either.

is it this?  I've never heard this particular one either..

The new song is horrible, but Katy Perry's got a couple things going for her:

I gotta say, Fish's voice is sounding rougher than ever during "I kissed a girl" ..... not that it takes anything away from the song!

Also, while this BDT#L is pretty cool and all.... there are plenty of better jams this summer

I guess a cop got some Liquid LSD thrown at him by a local on the day before the SPAC show.  Some of the commenters to the article question what this has to do with Phish, but come on!  I would say there is a 99% chance that the guy was going to bring it to the show.

SARATOGA SPRINGS – The weathermen said there was a zero percent chance of rain Sunday night. Nearly five years ago Phish themselves said they were done — they played their tearful farewell concert in Coventry, Vt. Neither prediction turned out to be true.

About two inches of rain poured on the thousands of "phans" at SPAC just before Phish took the stage around 8 p.m., while many were still waiting to get in. The rain was welcome relief from the high temperatures though, and everyone knows that hippies love mud. One finger in the air signaling the need for a "miracle," or last-minute ticket, Phish nation turned Saratoga Spa State Park and SPAC's parking lots into their home base.

Glassware was sold, friends reunited, and children were indoctrinated into their parents' hippie lifestyles — and that was before the show even started.

As the rain stopped Phish started, launching into "Llama" followed by "The Moma Dance." At the last stop of their comeback summer tour the band – guitarists Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth, bassist Mike Gordon and drummer Jon Fishman – was a tight unit. The much-reported missteps, false starts and flubbed lyrics that dogged them in the years before they called it quits in 2004 were a distant memory.

Anastasio was charged with DWI in December 2006 following a traffic stop in Whitehall; he was also in possession of prescription drugs. He spent about a year in a Washington County drug court treatment program and emerged in recovery. In May he lobbied for expansion of drug courts on Capital Hill. "My life had become a catastrophe," he said. "I had no idea how to turn it around."

Community service, addiction treatment and reuniting with his band mates turned out to be just what Anastasio needed. "Phish 3.0" as the reunited band is referred to by fans, retains all the unpredictable jamming and quirky antics that developed their huge following in the 1980s and 90s, but dispenses with some of the chemically-enhanced sloppiness.

"Golgi Apparatus," "Chalk Dust Torture" and "David Bowie" brought out the best in Phish and the crowd rewarded them for it, dancing their collective hearts out. The five-year hiatus, it seemed, was just a chance for Phish nation to practice their dancing.

Anastasio and his band spent a long intermission – upwards of 30 minutes – recharging for an explosive second set that encompassed all of their uniquely-Phishy traits.

As the first lyrics of "Halley's Comet" rang out, a little boy sitting near me who looked too young even for kindergarten squealed with delight. The bopping, nonsensical tune was a treat for fans of all ages.

Next they launched into a perennial favorite, their cover of Velvet Underground's "Rock & Roll" which had everyone in the place "shaking to that fine, fine music."

Then the show got weird, in the best way possible. In the middle of "Harpua," Anastasio launched into a silly story about a boy named Jimmy's search for his spirit guide. The audience was absolutely rapt. The manic energy of the lawn faded and the wandering crowds stood still – every single person at SPAC faced ahead, hanging on Anastasio's every rambling word.

He and Fishman traded spots, Fishman headed to the mic wearing a polka-dotted shift dress. He dispensed the spirit guide's long-awaited words of wisdom: "I kissed a girl, and I liked it."

His cover of Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" was a first for Phish, but I doubt it will be the last. Fishman was hysterical and committed to his moment in the spotlight, singing every flirty word of the bubblegum pop hit.

The famous trampolines came out for "You Enjoy Myself," and Anastasio and Gordon bounced around to their famous jam to the delight of the crowd.

Well after 11 p.m. they closed out the tour with "I Been Around" off their upcoming album "Joy" and a raucous cover of "Highway to Hell." Phish is back and hopefully that highway takes them not to hell, but to SPAC again and again.

QuoteAs the rain stopped Phish started, launching into "Llama" followed by "The Moma Dance." At the last stop of their comeback summer tour the band – guitarists Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth, bassist Mike Gordon and drummer Jon Fishman – was a tight unit. The much-reported missteps, false starts and flubbed lyrics that dogged them in the years before they called it quits in 2004 were a distant memory.
LMAO.  This shit was published too.
Just went and checked this out and they did go back and change the name to Page McConnell...

Has it yet been said that "I Been Around" feels like half a song? I mean, I like what I hear -- sounds Guys & Dolls/Grease musical-theater-ish -- but why so seemingly incomplete?

Why debut a song in the encore to the last show of a tour?

Because they can.

On our way out of the Park, there seemed to be cop cars and officers everywhere.  Anyway, we were trying to pay attention to everything going on with the lights, etc. and didn't notice this big cop trying to wave us down.  Well doesn't he eventually slam him hands on our hood and proceed to tell us off for awhile.  Then he says that we're going downtown and tells us to pull over.  Well, my friend who is driving starts to get pretty worried as we're sitting on the side of the road.  We had emptied the car of anything incriminating at this point since we were headed back to Canada right after the show so there was nothing to worry about.  I finally get out of the car after waiting for 10 minutes and approach the cop.  He freaks at me again and tells me to back up.  I explained that we were sober and reasoned with him awhile about the distractions etc and he just yelled at me to get back in the car and drive safe.  Thankfully, we were able to get the hell outta there without too much trouble.
Not to mention, on the way down, the border cross guards raked us over the coals for an hr +.  Accused my friend of trying to sneak stuff in.  They said the dogs were going crazy (although he hasn't puffed in yrs) so they searched us and our car and finally had to let us go.  The way back was a breeze, which was nice since we were ready to get off the road.

3 Rock Stars got arrested after SPAC.  Classic!

Cop: Phish fans rock at SPAC, then try to steal rocks from quarry

By CHRISTEN GOWAN, Staff writer
Last updated: 4:14 p.m., Tuesday, August 18, 2009

RAVENA -- Three Phish fans who delayed their trip home from Sunday's concert to hunt for crystals at a Ravena quarry were arrested after police said officers searched the trio's campsite at a local school and found drugs.

Coeymans police were called to the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk schools on Route 9 Monday after staff their found the people camping on a campus hillside.

When police arrived at the school, they said they found Meaghan McCleary, 22, of Buffalo lounging in a lawn chair on the school grounds. Police said her car doors were open and her belongings were out on the ground. While the officer said police were talking to McCleary, a LaFarge Cement Plant truck pulled up with employees from the plant and two other men.

Those men, Stephen Roll, 22, of Buffalo, and Matthew Schroeder, 25, of North Tonawanda, had been found digging rocks out of the plant's quarry, looking for crystals, police said. The quarry is posted for no trespassing.

The three said they had been at Saratoga Performing Arts Center for Sunday's Phish concert, but decided to stop in Ravena to search for crystals, police said. Police said they received permission to search their vehicle and found marijuana, ecstasy, and a small amount of LSD.

Roll was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal trespass, and petit larceny. Schroeder was charged with criminal trespass and petit larceny. McCleary was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal use of drug paraphernalia, trespass and vehicle and traffic charges.

After arraignment in village court, they were sent to Albany County jail. Bail for McCleary and Schroeder was set at $5,000; Roll's bail was set at $12,500.

hm. i hope set II proves to be all it's cracked up to be.

Set I

Llama - great song, awesome that they finally busted it out, but... this is probably the lamest version ever played.

Moma - exactly like all the others this tour, short and to the point. i miss momas that went at least a couple minutes longer. still, a killer song i'm always happy to hear.

Guyute - eh. kind of flubby. didn't seem to have the energy of the RR version, which was also rather flubby.

Anything But Me - oh right. this song. i really don't like this song.

Cars Trucks Buses - great. best song of the set.

Chalk Dust - it certainly was.

Golgi - okay but for the flubs.

Bowie - i kind of spaced on the composed part, but the jam wasn't as good as RR or shoreline.

Cavern - about 2/3 the energy of the gorge version.

Ocelot - i like this song. this version seems to be par for the course.

Possum - most overplayed of '09?

Antelope - good. typical for '09. very far from the gorge version.

lot of songs in here, but no sort of pacing whatsoever.
as always with phish 3.0, bet it was a blast to attend, but here at home, this is pretty weak for this tour.
i trust i will be thoroughly gumbo'd by BDTNL...

http://www.saratogian.com/articles/2009/08/18/news/doc4a8a14654efe6532055831.

QuoteBALLSTON SPA — Three law enforcement officers were injured over the weekend — one by a splash of LSD — in incidents tied to the Phish concert at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the Saratoga County district attorney said Monday.

In addition, two assistant district attorneys on call Sunday "got very little sleep" as calls came in from state park police and state police dealing with some unlawful Phish fans, according to D.A. James A. Murphy III. They fielded 17 calls for bail recommendations in a 24-hour period, Murphy said, many of which stemmed from the arrests of concert-goers.

Murphy said state park police and state police made several drug-related arrests of people allegedly in possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms, LSD, cocaine, nitrous oxide and marijuana. State park police will release a complete list of arrests from the concert today.

On Sunday, Murphy said, a city police officer may have lost a tooth while breaking up a downtown fight, and a state park police officer was cut and bruised during the concert while arresting a subject who was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree assault.

The LSD episode occurred Saturday afternoon, the day before the concert, as an investigator and about six other police officers were attempting to arrest Todd Buchas, 30, of Snowberry Road, Ballston Spa, outside of the Saratoga Springs Public Library.

Buchas was taken into custody after leading police in a short foot pursuit, during which he attempted to discard several items. Police said he was in possession of a small eyedropper container holding liquid LSD, some of which got onto the investigator, whom police would not identify. The investigator spent several hours at Saratoga Hospital Saturday recovering from the effects of the LSD.

Buchas also attempted to bite the leg of an officer attempting to arrest him, police say. He was charged with obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors; and assault, and two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, all felonies.

This # Line is in my top three jams for 3.0. Finally they space it out. Page lays down the synth, and Trey goes with it. Spaciest jam of the tour, even more so than JB Hood. While I don't like 20 Years Later that much, the segue was perfect. And the RnR was quite good too.

I just...   man.  That was IT.  That was everything.  If that doesn't completely prove that Phish is back, well...  fuck.  Go suck on the tail pipe of that classic '67 Jaded Hater with the hemi upgrade you rev up and jerk off to every night.

LOL Gumbo, and just imagine some of the shows we have seen collectively as a group here. Imagine, December '95 (could be argued all of fall, I only did December), where night after night they did this, driving your skull through the back of the arena or theater/auditorium to leave you a withered dilapidated mess, crumpled on the floor, exhausted. However, as opposed to this being a one off event, you would pick yourself up, declare that it was the greatest thing you had ever witnessed and then, without fail, the next night they would top it, crazier and more intense than the last. I seriously thought Phish would never play a bad note again. It was as close to divine guidance as I have ever felt (or maybe that was the L ), felt the same way at times in '97.

IMO this SPAC show is a good show, but not great and not the strongest of tour. Since first sets are rarely intended to be huge jam segues, I expect them to be tight and the jams to be interesting, I do not feel that way about this first set. And I have to disagree Gumbo, this does not prove they are completely back, but what it does prove is that they are assuredly on their way. Number Line and RR the obvious standouts. That being said, I am still unwilling to say that I have heard a great show this summer tour but they will get there; Trey's fingers need a little more time and Fishman's chops need to sharpen. They will get there. Awhile back, I predicted it would take a fall run in arenas to get a great show, a near perfect flawless show, because that is the definition of great in my books. I stand by that statement.

Well, I fully expect the Fall tour to pick up where this show left off.

After a few more listens my opinion still remains roughly unchanged.

I fucking love this Number Line.  It actually feels very "Dead-ish" to me, in a way, because of the way Fishman was playing.  NO fills, like, forever.  It was just a straight beat.  So that gave it that way extended linear vibe, where you aren't constantly reminded of the shape and structure of the jam, the way you are with, say, a Slave jam.

There was one major point in it, though, where Trey led a build up into a turn around that Fishman didn't seem to follow.  I mean, he came back in on the "One" with everybody, but it was just with a hi-hat hit as part of the beat he'd been keeping.  I don't believe he even hit a cymbal, but I'll have to go back and listen again to remember for sure.

I had no qualms about the encore, though.  At first, I thought I Been Around was some little joke song they were "writing" right there on stage, but I thought it was cool.  Kinda agree about the "half finished" vibe of it.  but I thought it was all great.

I listened to the first set again, and I think its okay.  The Llama is odd, though...  it indeed "feels" strange.  Something just...  I don't know.  and it JUST cracks the 3 minute mark, musically, by the time they finally start playing it.  Shortest Llama ever, probably?

but Moma was hot, I loved that.  So did my girlfriend.  I, too, wish they would've taken it out a little bit more.  I'm not sure why they aren't.  I mean, it felt finished, not like they cut it off too short, but they did not extend it more than it needed to be in order to be considered truly finished.

I loved the Bowie intro, though.  No clue what the hell Trey is doing, with his weird whisper shit.  The jam is just okay, nothing spectacular, but not horrible.  Does its thing.  Chalkdust was really fun, the lights were great with that.

Possum felt very forced at the show and the jam doesn't do that much to shake that feeling.  Cavern was cool with Page taking the solos in between.  that was neat.  gave it a VERY different kind of energy, though.

Guyute killed the energy they had, though.  Llama > Moma fucking started shit off RIGHTEOUS.  If they skipped Guyute and Anything But This, this set would have been so much more epic and perfect.  They wouldn't have even had to add anything, except make Antelope crack the 10 minute mark and maybe push Ocelot up into the place it felt it should have found its way into.

This song makes me think of Bathtub Gin a lot, because of the mid-tempo 1/4 note vibe.  The jam was really good, but I felt that it should have busted into an upshift into double time or something, the way great Gin jams do.  But i think Ocelot was very well sung by Trey, his vocal inflections were great.

This was my first one back since Coventry so no complaints here... other than BDTNL needs a chorus reprise around the 19 minute mark.
Over the last five years my Phish listening has become a very singular, personal thing.  My girl doesn't want to hear them as much as me so it's more of a earbuds on the mountain bike, headphones sitting here on the puter, jammin in my work truck type of thing.
Standing on the lawn last Sunday night reminded me that this is what WE do.  No one is here by accident and it is all love.  I welcomed the rain blast when it happened because I was completely unprepared in shorts and a t-shirt.  All of a sudden there was going to be some work involved and I was ready to dig in and do it if the rain stuck around for the whole show.  Then it blew over and left everyone a little refreshed and ready to go.
I'm so glad I got to go after missing everything else this summer.  Even driving back to NYC after the show and going straight to work the next day felt pretty "Rock and Roll".

A chorus reprise would have been very forced, unless they somehow were able to trace their way back from Neptune.  But I see what you're saying.  Kinda like making it a Down With Disease.  Simple song form > Jam > Moe-style chorus reprise.

There isn't a lot going on in the latter-half of that #Line, it kind of drags on and bores me.  The first half of 20 Years Later is weak too, so that makes for about 12 minutes in the middle of that 25 minutes that isn't very listenable...

I loved the Bowie intro, though.  No clue what the hell Trey is doing, with his weird whisper shit.  The jam is just okay, nothing spectacular, but not horrible.

The intro reminded me of the 12/29/94 whispering section. Good stuff for sure.

THis Bowie pales in comparison to the Darien version earlier in the week, IMO.

is there anyone else that DID NOT go to this show besides me that thinks it is getting slightly overlooked for how good it is?

Listening to the first set, one thing that bugs me though is how they place Guyute.
sorta like the redrocks version its becoming a Buzzkill placement song. its almost like since they are playing shorter versions of most songs and therefore more songs in a set, that songs like guyute are getting peppered in as time filler and really dont belong. same could be said for a lot of tunes this tour...
anyway, this version is tighter than the RR one, but perhaps only b/c it seems they really slowed the tempo down very 3.0 stlye. i cant say i'm against this approach. the trade off for a slower tempo is a much larger percentage of  composed sections nailed correctly.
Furthermore,  i thought this phenomenon was an interesting microcosm of their approach to playing live for 3.0 in general.

i'll admit, Anything But Me is not my favorite tune to see played live.
and i pretty much used to hate it too, until one day i read the lyrics (with out the music playing)

QuoteI am just a satellite, high above the atmosphere
Bouncing every thing you say to someone who was meant to
hear
Sometimes on a rainy day, I lie in bed and dream of you
So blame it on the satellite, when your message can't get
through

I am just a tiny wave, a minor ripple out at sea
Moving slowly towards the shore, burdened with uncertainty
I'm gaining power, losing speed, wondering as I near your
door
Will you hold it open for the tidal wave approaching shore?

You've become an island in the hazy world surrounding me
Offering a vast reward each time I safely cross the sea
All too often I become lost in the fog and haze
Clinging still, against my will, to promises of clearer days

I am just a raindrop that accelerates without control
Losing bits and pieces in descent 'til I'm no longer whole
I am just another shooting star above that you might see
Until I have your full attention I'll be anything but me

now i at least appreciate (& tolerate) it.

Am I the only one that really thinks that the Harpua is extra fucking lame with a side of lame sauce?

First of all...there is no true Jimmy/Poster Nutbag/Harpua story...

Second of all...Trey keeps fucking up during the second half of the tune.

Or...am I being a jealous hater?

Also, I kind of thought that the Katy Perry cover wasn't as funny as I was hoping...it was more like..."HaHa get it...I'm playing the Katy Perry song!"

ps-Anything But Me is a rad tune for exactly the reason that RedRum posted.

so, you guys are ok with trey being a satellite, a tiny wave, and a raindrop,
but when he's a submarine, look the fuck out!

He explains how he is like a satellite.

It's a metaphor.

He never explains how he is a submarine or what that has to do with anything.

It is confusing.

Got it?

I'm kinda shocked that the Rock & Roll from this show seems to be getting no love at all.   :?
