While I enjoy bluegrass, I did not enjoy the Phish Vegas After Party at the Bowl this past fall. I should probably give them another chance, but I found their sound quite abrasive. Needed some low tones.

This is just me but I've grown so tired of the hype that comes whenever a "jam" group does GD covers. It's almost just gimmicky at this point. Doesn't help that I don't particularly care for these guys either. Ever since Yonder disbanded I've been trying to find my new favorite jamgrass group and these guys just didn't do it for me when I saw them live.

They played Eyes when I saw them in September and killed it imo.
I loved the stripped down version and they jammed it out for awhile.

Psyched to see these guys tonight and Saturday. 3 night run in Portland. Best in their genre right now and it's not close IMO. Yonder is still the bigger name but GSBG is taking over.

I  might go.  My friend is their manager, so it would be nice to see him, but I'll probably bail in the end lol.

completely agree.... I saw the Stringdusters for the first time last Sunday, and while I enjoyed them alot I came away wanting to see Greensky LOL.   They bring the jams.  I feel bad for EdBanky...

Me too.

Grateful Dead is the core canon for bands that jam. It is important when those bands touch on that material. It's not as if they are booking tours based on it like some other groups. And honestly, even if they were, big fucking deal. Truth is, most groups don't have the chops to write material half as good as that stuff. A good song is more than just some hot picking.

I'm with EdBanky, it's almost as if people are getting to the point where they don't know how to throw down and party unless there is a GD soundtrack.

The GD50 this summer was cool, but stop humping the carcass already.

I really don't think Greensky should be dissed for playing one set of GD out of like 150 shows this year.  This was to reward fans that showed up for an undersold Wednesday show.  Also I think they should get some credit for taking the huge diss they got earlier this year in stride, when they were prepared to play Eyes of the World to the biggest audience of their career and shitty bands like bisco got to play 2 songs.

Yeah I don't really know shit about Greensky, I was more talking about how I think there is a general trend of more and more GD tribute acts out there.  Personally I'd like to see more original music rather than yet another rehash, but it seems that this is what people want.

Don't really think I'm missing out on yet another bluegrass rendition of some GD tunes. It's probably the easiest style to cover those songs anyways. There's plenty of other catalogs out there that I would happily shit my pants over. I'll even admit that Greensky's rendition of Rift is badass.

I think greensky is def taking over the yonder slot
they have good song writing and picking and throw in nice covers and some songs are like 20+ and its kinda hard to do that with a bluegrass band that isnt just trading off solos

They have been throwing eyes into their normal sets now just cuz I feel like they worked on it and want people to hear it since they got cut from the line up at the sold out dear jerry show for the biscuits and like OAR or something. Railroad Earth got cut too.

The set is pretty straight forward bluegrass minus the eyes, and I would love to hear the other one > cryptical > other one, since they do step into some psychedelic bluegrass world in some of their jams, like When Doves Cry.
Also ripple encore would just cap it off, love that song and as an encore too

Last night the first set was the entire "five interstates" album and the second set was full rage. I def heard some guitar gently weeps and talking heads teases deep in the psychedelic ooze. Soooo yeah we're prob going to all 3 now. Tom Hamilton's American Babies open the next two nights and I'm super curious to see if him sitting in means a couple GD tunes.

Never seen Cabinet but I love the Dusters as well. I was working hospitality at the late night tent at Northwest String Summit this summer and they played this awesome unplugged encore after we had to shut down the PA at 3:30am! They were all so psyched afterwards that the crowd was so attentive. Really cool experience and major highlight of this year's fest.

Thanks for that, I got hammered at the show that night and my memory of the 2nd set is foggy at best.

Really dug the Tom Hamilton sit in on 11/7 and the midnight moonlight>after midnight sandwich to close the run.
All around killer weekend.

Got the bluegrass taken care of now it's Karl D and Snarky Puppy this weekend!

I caught them in 2015 and was a tad underwhelmed but they may have gotten better since then. I was expecting more fast picking and musicianship but they were kind of slow and boring for the fest set that I caught.

If you haven't seen them lately and they're coming to your area it's worth going, but they've definitely fallen out of my "will drive more than 45 minutes to see" list in the past few years

They put on a good show at All-In Fest, 'opening from TAB'. I hadn't seen them in years before that.

At their show this weekend at the Eastern, some guy shit and puked on the floor and caused a chain reaction of 15 people puking due to the smell.  The picture I saw of the cleanup is pretty funny.  Apparently half the crowd left at set break lol.
