Shit was real fire. First set was great and I had high hopes for set 2. DWD > Twist was great, YEM seemed extra funky.

Just got home. Strange show for me as our tickets were stolen and used. The person carrying our tickets was literally pick pocketed. Through due diligence and some kind heartedness the folks at security got our tickets back and we got to see most of first set and all of second set. The whole thing kinda clouded my actual view of the show though. The foam was good as was ocelot actually. Second set as a whole raged. Nighty night.

The bigger question is, did they play the encore earlier in the day, or was set two 14.5 hours long?

Beginning of Sand jam sounds pretty sweet, too.  I really like the way Trey sets up the outro into it, and the lick lick he does to land on the tonic to start the jam.  And his licks at start are actually pretty fucking dope, holy crap!!!  Its melodic Trey!  Its making me think of Fall '97 with some of his note choices in some of the licks.

Looking forward to giving this a relisten but that second set sounded like some serious heat through the stream last night. DwD, the spacey Golden Age outro, and YEM were the real deal.

Yeah, I think the band has made a huge breakthrough this month, truthfully.

Check out the video for the Stash from Tahoe.  I mean, my god.... the start of that jam...  is it '94 again?  Where the hell did that space come from?  Well... we all know the answer is Mike, but...  haha, Trey allowed it to become.  The open-ness was closed off after a minute or so, but god damn if that minute or two of levity at the start of the jam wasn't totally cosmic.

Anyway, I think its interesting the way they've structured these sets, song-title-wise.  The 2nd set and encore here is like a prophetic tale or something....  with a back-tracking rewind, finished off by a triumphant rebirth, metaphorically, about the band, but with a hard road ahead.  Kind of like the first LOTR movie.

Or as Trey is trying to say:

Our addictions tore us apart, and the band down with disease, causing us to twist and regress backwards down the number line, and we eventually sputtered into nothingness.  Then, we came back, and all of these shows have been own theme from the bottom, leading us all into another golden age, where everyone is healthy and functioning and we are stable.  Because of this, each night we are able to the central figures in another glorious finale to a day in the life you enjoy.  However, you seem to think that things have fallen down on me, and that I am a slave to the traffic light, unable to go when the light is green and the jam potential is glaring me in the face.  We are on top of the world together, but things are rocky...

Haven't heard the show in its entirety yet, but from what I heard of the stream it was another really good one.  I agree with Gumbo on the breakthrough sentiment, hope the energy carries through to tonight!

Many songs left.......

Ghost, Fee, Drowned, McGrupp, Split, Gin, Bowie, Antelope, Simple, Seven Below, Scents, Jibboo....

I think Set 2 will go something like:    Mike's Song > Gotta Jibboo > Drowned -> Saw It Again > David Bowie, Simple -> Piper > Makisupa > Lizards

Encore:  Esther > Weekapaug Groove

wildcards:  Mango, Ghost, Scents, Split, Seven Below

Does that mean they were really good or really bad? Does this assessment come down to whether one likes to have their balls sucked really hard?

Dug the show last night and had tons of fun. The LxL may be my personal highlight cuz i LOVE. That song and it seemed like the did a little something different with it than ur average 3.0version.

Thought the first night was better.  Can't wait for tonight!

Oh man, don't say that. My friend Janis plays Bass in FGC. The Fish rumor was probably because she played with him in Everyone Orchestra one year at Bear Creek. Sorry you didn't dig it though GBL.

Never liked the lead singers voice in fgc but I dig the tunes. Janis is cool as hell. She played sand with old shoe at their cd release at the warehouse a few weeks back. Btw if you ever get to go there, the owner mike is a cool dude. It's a totally private bar which kicks ass. He brews and has many beers on tap.

Disease!!!!!   WHAMMY LOOPS!!!!!!!

The ending to this thing is monstrous!!!   I'm stuck with a video for now, but did they put delay on Mike's foot-bell?

the end of this is so sick, though...  Page's synth pushing the swell upwards, and Fish flows in with the cymbals, and Trey's WHAMMY LOOPS!!!!!!!

if they can figure out how to make this danceable....  instead of a giant space wash...  holy ball-sack.  And the patiently Page-caressed synthway into Twist....

for all the derision rightfully labeled on MOST of the material of the run, this makes me think of the glorious beginning to the Vegas '04 Twist.  That thing starts off *so* cool and slick...  sly, confident, and laid back.  OMG I love this!!!  They're like...  jamming the start!!!!  Page piano all over the first pre-chorus!!!  Oh man, this Twist jam!!!  holy wtf!!!

this is so fucking cool guys!!!

FN LOVE reading shit like this... DL'ing this show now and heading straight for the DWD>Twist. While witnessing the R&R from the Gorge I was awestruck at where they were taking that jam... deep deep into the dark depths of a sludge filled subway station. Stoked to hear they're continuing on the exploratory path... even if it's one early second set spaceship venture every couple shows.

Yeah man, the Disease got into this neat raunchy chomp-funk area about like... 16 minutes in, give or take.  Honky Page clav, and then it just melts away into this neat wash and then the cosmic landing strip sirens come in...... and then Twist slowly stands up like a slick, cool jazz-cat in a smoky lounge that just had his dick sucked and got paid for it.

ok, this 2nd set just put 1st night to shame.  just fucking sick from start to finish.  the DWD is awesome.  absolutely no trey-bullshit and just total all-band jamming throughout, very very good stuff.

i love the song selection throughout the set.  BDTNL is such a great song IMO, and they just grooved it so hard.  the segue from golden age into ADITL is sublime, and page just nails the beginning.  and this YEM, wow!  there was a little bit of everything in it, without being choppy (which is a 3.0 trait IMO).

without even hearing 3rd night yet, i'm gonna say this was the best set of the run, and probably the best set of the tour.  maybe best of 3.0?  thoughts?  obviously, i haven't listened to a lot of 3.0 (well, pretty much most of it), but this set didn't sound 3.0 at all.

i think the biggest thing for me was that there wasn't a single cringe-worthy moment in the set.

without having listened to the other 2 shows in complete yet, I'm inclined to agree with this sentiment.  Save for the questionable existence/placement of Mexican Cousin, this show is absolutely perfect Phish-journey.

If the first night had at least one jam song that was over 15-16 minutes, then I think that night would take the cake for its special curfew situation, but with the 2nd nights DWD sticking out glaringly at over 21 minutes, that kind of puts a spotlight on this a little more.

just getting through set 1.
very impressed.
Ocelot, the Wedge, and LxL are all top versions.

set 2 kills - can't pick between 8-16 and 8-16, but that's OK.
:music:

so - they obviously still know how to jam. Could it be that they choose not to?
Why would that be?
Obvious dis-respect of the 'paug, if you ask me.

Of course.

I think it all goes back to my post in the 8/12 thread.... or maybe 8/15, i cant remember.  But the bottom line, is that the band's values have changed, and they have fallen in love with themselves, and what they've created: their songs.

They are getting the same payoff from reliably killing stuff like Possum, Maze, Wolfmans in the same manner in which they got off from jamming stuff like Ghost, Piper, Seven Below...

And, as we all know, with age comes less risk.  With jamming and songs being equal, they now would rather indulge in the reliable standby, without the risk of being unsatisfied by what they were able to do with 20 minutes of Ghost, for example.

I believe that they're thinking is that, if they restrict their jamming, the times when it happens will more frequently be rewarding.  You want stability as you age, and pushing through 4, 5 nights of disappointment in jamming-based music for one night of ecstatic musical orgasms isn't as worth the effort and frustration anymore as playing 5 solid nights of bitchin-good song-based sets.  They don't want to waste a single second on-stage, satisfaction-wise.

Why play Tweezer with the risk of not be satisfied with the result and get mad and down on yourself when you know you'll be satisfied with a hot Maze peak?

This is just a theory, based on their actions and results of late, musically-speaking.  I think they are discovering that they can frequently produce satisfactory jamming results.... so its more of an issue of confidence now.

i don't buy that.  only during 2.0 were the jams "disappointing" at times.  i can't think of very many instances in 1.0 where that happened.  when they jammed it was awesome, and they jammed every night, so entire tours were awesome.

i don't think jamming brought critique, good or bad, from them.  i think it was a natural outlet for them.  its what they did.  especially in 97-99, when they abandoned the rigid setlists and just went with the flow.  they never set out to play a 25 min tweezer, it just happened.

i also think that is where the stability was, in the jams.  much easier to cover up a "mistake" in a jam when everything is free flowing and unintended.  whereas in a song, or composed section, if they missed a change it was noticeable.

also, i don't think their attitude towards feeling and energy has really changed.  think about trey's quote from bittersweet (the movie).  he could care less about missing a change, as long as the energy was there.  the energy is what got him off.

bottom line.  people change, evolve.  unless they come out and say they don't like jamming anymore i don't think it should be second guessed.  we have no idea what they are thinking.

Agreed. As I said in LST, this DwD puts DTE to shame.

16Aug.2011 - set II

DwD - Trey drops in near 4:18, Page raging on his keys, Mike letting us know he's present, Trey surfin' the melodic bed, Trey wisely decides to switch it up near 6:45, jam rides Fish's Osaka esque DwD jam beat, Mike adding nice lines, definitely similar to the 21May2000 version, jam evens out near 10:00, industrial into trilly Trey, nice funk near 11:00, nice work by Page, ambient thrust by Page underneath, trippy lines by Trey, again nice sustain by Page, consonant chord hit by Trey, Fish almost sounding Light like at times, steady groove near 14:30 +, Trey chimes in w/ a metal clank riff, Mike feeding off, marching Phish wail(wall), Page adding nice colors, march jam dissolving near 18:00, more No Quarter teases/influence, nice repose by Mike, Page kicking in the ambient thrust, signaling to the band its time to end the song, 2001 like mini build, into

Twist - active version,

BDTNL - already a nostagia tune, it takes more then fancy fretwork to impress this listener.

Theme - more arena rock goodies,

Golden Age - love it but becoming overplayed.

ADITL - nc

YEM - Trey funks in at 10:18, Frampton esque Page, muscular riffage by Trey and Mike, Trey opts to lead in high, Fish sealing the deal w/ the audience, tease???, mostly straight ahead riffage by Trey, Mike/Page and Fish playing great, Trey responds, Trey in solo land, nothing earth shattering here, very much the same, Mike reminding us of his jedi status/

E

Heavy Things - sounds out of key by a 1/2 step?  is this the newer arrangement of HT?

Slave - personally I'd rather hear a rising ambient jam in something other then Slave; they should throw some type II in this puppy.

RTop - love it.

conclusion:  I liked the jamming in DwD, definitely a collection of a few "jams".  everything else I thought was assembly line Phish.

its funny....  because this Disease is so awesome, but so predictable in terms of what it did:  immediately into the jam, Trey starts playing something unusual and out of the ordinary.  Check out the SPAC # Line, the Camden Sand, the Camden '10 Chalkdust, the Camden '09 Tweezer, the Albany Seven Below.......  all of them have this blatantly obvious moment of "okay, now its gonna be big" where Trey plays something different, or continues playing period.

And then Chris did his "big jam moment" light display, where the stage is black and he has a couple swirling light patterns going over top.  "groove lighting" almost.  Its interesting too, because Fish is the longest to finally open up with his parts....  and only finally really digging into it with the rest of the band around 13-14 mins.  He's the biggest detractor in the big jams, imo....  its not that he's playing back, his playing has just become so straight and linear.  The 6/3 DWD is the same way....  its just one big long straight line, versus.... say, the 12/11/97 Disease, or the 12/16/99 Tweezer, or the 8/10/04 ACDC Bag.

But my god, once this Pay Jorgan segment opens up around 11-12-13 mins in....  holy ostrich testicles.  This is fucking incredible fucking Phish music.

Pay Jorgan for the win.

clearly young one, you haven't been listening to DWD for long enough.  everyone knows that the "make it or break it" moment in DWD is at the 12 min mark (+/- 2 min).  seriously, listen to any DWD, the shift from straight rocker to jammer happens at 12 min.  if they are feeling it they continue and it off to the races.  if they are not, it wraps up within a minute or two.

carry on

Oh yeah, I know this.  This Disease had it happen at like, 7-8 mins tho, which is weird.  Its just like the Camden 10 Chalkdust....  the way Trey switches up is just so blatanly obvious.  Its like "Hey, look, i'm not not on autopilot!!!" and he's playing interesting things that are not standard-fare for the jam they're performing.
