Terry, I'll sell you. DA20mkii next week if you go tape them this week. (Ok, maybe not but I could possibly be talked out of my spare.)

Ww, Gather,Form&Fly is their most complete record and a good place to start.

Had a great time tonight with blat, hesthemamba & his girl. Megafaun rocked. I wasn't super fond of the mountain goats, but whatever - great time regardless!

Here's a few mediocre pics from this evening. We tried to get a shot with the band, but the dude taking the picture failed and some guy walked in front of us right as the picture was being snapped...

Definitely. I can't wait to catch these guys.
After listening to Blat and RJ talk them up last year, I listened. I dug it, but wasn't completely sold. Somewhere this spring, I realized I was listening to certain songs a LOT, so I re-listened to all the albums. Since then I've been pretty much addicted.

Supposed to be in Seattle the weekend before these dates kick off. Looks like I need to schedule my return so I can catch the DC show.
If I'm lucky, the deployment will get pushed back two weeks and I'll be able to see DC & Seattle.

Also, wtf is the Red Palace?

Got a ticket for the Portland show next week...At $9.50, even if I can't make it, it's cheap insurance....But I will be making it....

booya!  :beers:

Love seeing shows at the Doug Fir.

Enjoy it.

I'm kinda pissed that work schedules changed and I'm not going to be in Seattle for their show next week.

Welp, glad you weren't counting on it because they canceled the show.  First ever cancellation for them, their van broke down...Peeps must have been pissed last night.....I gave my ticket to JP for tonight, I gotta get up at 6 and the opener doesn't even start until 9:30 or something...Stupid responsibilities....

Oof.
Bummer about the Seattle show.

As for tonight's show, bah. In August, I went to see the Woods show in DC with Blat, got home at one, and was up at 430 to head to the airport for a flight to Seattle.

Wow that was a really great show last night. Touched on so many musical styles. Did some unplugged, single acoustic guitar and acapella stuff that was awesome. The couple of real rock songs they played were killer, especially the opener. Such melody and harmony in these guy's music. Loved it. If they come near, I 100% urge you to check it out. Great musical experience.

A couple things that seem to be lacking from this band though: I have no idea where to find a setlist. and when I asked their merch girl about how to get a live recording she looked at me like I was crazy. She even claimed that the band doesn't record their own shows. yeah right

Seriously beautiful music. Wish I could hear it again.  :rawk:

They don't record their own shows.

Setlists have been fairly consistent throughout the tour with a song or two subbed in each night.

Try this as a good source for this tour:

I wish I'd taped but I'm also glad I didn't.

True, but I've been pining for the Phish to return to Vegas for years now and for Megafaun to return to Portland only for a few months.

Sadly, I do have to question which would be more musically satiating for me from a freshness standpoint....

ETA: But there's no question partying with a huge crew of phish friends in Vegas for 3 nights will be a million times more FUN!

According to the website, they're playing the "backstage" room.  http://www.blackcatdc.com/schedule.html

Quote
The Backstage is located downstairs next to the Red Room Bar and offers a more intimate state-of-the-art performance space with a capacity of about 200. Recent events on the Backstage have included indie, punk, and garage rock bands, solo artists, DJ dance nights and independent film screenings.

Sorry, the only camcorders I have access to belong to IU and I'm close enough to graduating that I don't think I want to risk it

Megafaun was super good.

Black Cat Backstage

Scorned >
Heretofore
Get Right
Hope You Know
Isabella
The Longest Day
His Robe
Kill The Horns
You Are The Light
Second Friend
Resurrection
Real Slow

Encore:
The Fade
Black And White^*
Worried Mind*

^ the dBs cover
*acoustic, no mics, amidst the audience.

So they came out swinging with the bitter blues of Scorned that faded into the poignant folk of Heretofore. Get Right rips. Isabella is funky awesome written by drummer Joe and they nailed it. Another highlight was The Longest Day which was beautiful. His Robe was silly and beautiful and Kill The Horns remains their saddest song. You Are The light was great and Second Friend featured a new arrangement with Joe staying behind the drums. I might have liked the arrangement more on the last tour because it had a certain sweetness to the the vocal arrangement that's a bit lost in the fuller band sound but it was still really enjoyable. Resurrection was good (I shot vid of it.) Real Slow was awesome. They stretched a bit and got a little out there before skillfully dialing it all back in to close. Killer.

The encore began with The Fade which was played onstage, electric and all that but then they switched to acoustic guitar, banjo, shakers, and accordion and descended to the middle of the sold-out crowd. Audience request, Black And White was awesome, sung amid the throng. they then asked people to put away their i-thingys and ststop the flashes and have the final song be just for the people in the room. That was Worried Mind. It became a terrific sing-along with huge audience participation.

Go see these guys.

I chatted with all of the guys either before or after the show. They're kind enough to remember me for past performances. Joe even introduced me to a friend of his and noted that I had been to all of their local shows in the past few years. I obliged by showing him the setlist notes from their Black Cat show almost exactly two years earlier on my blackberry.

mbw, I also told him that I had some friends planning to hit the Chicago show and that one was planning to tape. Joe told me to tell you to "say 'hi'.

They were very psyched for the tour and I think it's gonna be a good one.

Just got home, had a great time at the show!  The whole thing was really good, but definitely be sure to check out the Real Slow.  They're a band that's great to see live, so talented but so casual about it, they set up all their own equipment and just stepped off the stage afterward and started talking to people.  Also, Schubas is a really cool little venue, I'd definitely want to go back there.  Good seeing you, Terry and John!

So I have been taking a good break from drinking (mainly to lose weight), but last night I had a few beverages. I mean they have Alpha King on tap, so I knew it could be dangerous.
Anyway, I really wanted to hear "Guns", and my friend Tim was pretty drunk, so I mentioned the song, and he grunts it out. They definitely got a kick out of it. When we talked to them after the show, they laughed and said they would have played it, but they haven't practiced it in quite some time.

So, last night was basically pretty fucking awesome.  I almost bailed from going at the last second and boy am I glad I went!  I was cashed from moving all day but JP and Hicks scored a booth for us (at my request) and it turned out perfect.  I brought my "rig" and taped about 40 minutes before my iPod ran out of juice.  Doesn't really matter because I had the gain on the wrong setting and the whole recording is over modulated  :frustrated:....Grrr.....next time I'll get it right!  Highlights were when Hicks and I fired up some blueberry diesel and the band went on to say that someone must have let a skunk into the room and that they "obviously were not in Pontiac, Michigan."  They also said the smell made them feel comfortable, so score one for the paug crew!  Real highlight was the set closing "Real Slow".  I really wish I had gotten this down on tape.  It had to have been 8 minutes....It was very different than the one Blat recorded at the Black Cat.  It was very, very sparse and it it was some serious deep space exploration.  A large section of it could have easily been from a '74 Playing jam or Dark Star.  Shit was Deep Space 9.  It makes you wonder why they only went to that place one time during the show.  Not that the rest of it wasn't killer, but it was the only time they really stretched out.  It was sick.. The rest of the show featured great harmonies and I love the accordion.  They seemed to be really digging it and I loved my first Megafaun show.  Can;t wait to see them again (and bummed I bagged out last time when I had bought a ticket)!  I bought Gather, Form and Fly on vinyl from the merch table and the band was standing around talking to anyone that had something to say.  Hopefully the "Real Slow" will surface.  I was able to shoot the encore with my phone...Don't know how it was at other shows, but Portland folks are real good about getting in close for sing alongs so it was pretty rad/funny/corny (in a good way corny)...

So this show was last night. DBT's were ok, it was my 2nd time seeing then, and the show definitely got better as their set went along. BUT the reason I went was to see Megafaun. Missed their first couple tunes as I was a little late getting there, but they did a great 45 min set, the highlight of which was when they dedicated a tune to Levon Helm, gathered around a single mic, and threw this little ditty out there. I was waiting for a copy to pop up on youtube, unfortunately, it's sideways, but still...it captures the magic of why we go see shows.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRxtE0pYu9E

ETA: Will definitely see them again, hopefully their own show and not opening for someone else.

Also, Alabama Shakes was the between sets music :)

whoaaa.  new album dropping in a couple of weeks

http://northernspy.11spot.com/arnold-dreyblatt-megafaun-appalachian-excitation.html

QuoteThe meeting of composer Arnold Dreyblatt and psych-folk trio Megafaun shouldn't be seen as unlikely just because it's cross-generational, or even (arguably) cross-genre. Such categorizations have to be set aside before taking in their Appalachian Excitation.

Born in New York in 1953, Dreyblatt came up under such lauded experimental groundbreakers as Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros and La Monte Young, obtaining a Master's degree in composition from Wesleyan University. Now based in Berlin, where he is active as a visual artist and as a composer.  His music is based on his own vocabulary of pulse and self-designed instrumentation.

The North Carolina by way of Wisconsin trio Megafaun (comprised of brothers Brad and Phil Cook and Joe Westerlund) has been working since 1997, when the three met at the H.O.R.D.E. festival. After a decade of crafting their sound, Westerlund contacted Jeff Hunt, owner of the Table of the Elements label, looking to get in touch with Dreyblatt, whose work all three admired. The following year they were able to schedule a week long residency at Salem Art Works in the mountains of upstate New York, where Dreyblatt taught them the just intonation tuning system he'd developed as well as some of the instruments he'd devised. They presented Dreyblatt's compositions at the 2008 Wire Festival in Chicago and concerts in Boston and NYC.

Busy schedules kept them from working together again until the 2012 Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina, just a stretch of mountains south from where they'd developed their joint sound. Excited about the performance, they booked the Pinebox Recording studio in Graham, N.C. to lay down the tracks that make up Appalachian Excitation. They connected again last February to play the Ecstatic Music Festival in New York City.

The album was recorded live in the studio with no click track and minimal separation, a new experience for the men of Megafaun. It's "the most rewarding way to record," said Joe Westerlund. "This record with Arnold marks a step towards Megafaun becoming more of a live-in-the-studio recording band, a more traditional and time-tested method."

Speaking from the stage at Merkin Concert Hall during their Ecstatic Music appearance last year, Dreyblatt said such genre transcending collaborations wouldn't have been possible several decades ago. "We are no longer one-dimensional people," he announced. Experience the dimensions of Appalachian groove and time-honored minimalism anew with Dreyblatt and Megafaun.

Zero future plans.

Joe's Grandma Sparrow album comes out next week. It's a crazy Zappa-ish collage of music and audio theater... Check it out. http://www.spin.com/articles/grandma-sparrow-his-piddletractor-orchestra-stream/

Brad will be touring with Sharon Van Etten for most of this year.

Next year, Phil's new album with his Guitarheels band will be coming out. He's super psyched about that. Meanwhile, I think he's still playing with Amy Ray and doing some other stuff (he just co-produced the Blind Boys From Alabama album with JVernon.)

So, while they went so far as to say that the band was not officially done forever, they also noted that they were glad I came out because Megafaun is unlikely to happen anytime in the next several years.

This tour only happened because Justin was asked by a college friend of theirs to play a wedding and he asked Megafaun to be the band. The three shows were simply so they could justify spending a week hanging out.

Preordered that business weeks back.

Phil told me it'd be right up my alley last year so I've been waiting anxiously.

Seeing him on 9/25.

New episode, extra long to help fill you time at home.

https://brokedownpodcast.blogspot.com/2020/03/double-drummer.html

Calling this episode Double Drummer because I talk with two great musicians. Ryan Jewell checks back in to discuss the new Mosses album, TV Sun. Then, Joe Westerlund (Megafaun) comes on to discuss his new record, Reveries In The Rift. Lots of talk, album clips and then, of course, Grateful Dead!
Enjoy!

Relevant to persons who follow this thread:
https://jagjaguwar.com/artist/deyarmond-edison/

QuoteThe only reason you may know DeYarmond Edison—the short-lived band at the core of this 5-LP, 4-CD, 60,000-word tome, Epoch—is that it birthed two other bands you almost absolutely know: Bon Iver and Megafaun.
And no, birthed is not too strong a word. When the Wisconsin-founded quartet broke up in August 2006 in their new hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, three-quarters of the band started Megafaun within days. Within weeks, Justin Vernon was returning north, shaping Bon Iver amid his season of hibernation. The ideas that DeYarmond Edison developed together unequivocally prompted its more famous successors, splitting it apart before you or most anyone else could know about it. One aim of Epoch is to offer retrospective insight, or to trace For Emma, Forever Ago and Bury the Square, Heretofore and 22, A Million back to true headwaters: these bonds of small-town childhood friendship and collective artistic ambition, even if they became too much to bear.

I just received my copy of this box and it's amazing. You can hear DeYarmond Edison dissolving and Megafaun & Bon Iver splintering into existence.

Really great shit.

I'm seeing Phil Cook play a solo piano gig on Saturday!
