Agree'd on all but the Stash.  I appreciated the fact that they lept out there in the stash, but they seemed to get scared of the water when they got waist deep.

That Makisupa-->Hood segue was breathtaking during the hoodstream.  Also, it sounded like a segue into Sanity to me which made the hood segue all the more phenomenal.

Such a good little run at the end there.

kills it three songs in?  it wasn't great, but it was clearly just a warm-up.

I thought the show was hot - Trey was on fire in the 2nd set.  Roggae was kaleidoscopic, Stash was kind of a deep-sea jam, Mikes through 'Paug was really high energy with Light, imo, being the highlight of the 2nd set jamming.  Felt like a long show - and believe it or not, they nailed char 0.

btw Jeff Shulman, this guy, was 2 rows behind me on the floor.  Notice the Phish logo on the jacket.  He finished 9th in the WSOP main event for 1.2 mill this november.  sweet blog.

Worst as in most negative (but honest)?

Or worst as in most inaccurate?

I'm curious to know what happened with the crowd. My bet is that a 3-day run would be better than a 4-day run. 12/28 is just too close to Xmas, and there isn't much of a fanbase in Miami.

Of course, the economy remains shit. Maybe the traveling fans already (happily) blew their budget on Indio?

Maybe people have had enough of the giant rock peaks and want Trey to chill the fuck out instead of attempting to blow up the arena every night.

Phish used to groove, I don't hear much groove anymore.

That's the truth.

I saw the Fall tour show twice. I don't need to see it 6 times.

OK, that's exaggerated for effect. But there's a kernel of truth in there. I had my fill. If the NYE run was local, I'd have tickets. But I'm not feeling motivated to jump through hoops.

excellent point - totally agree..def. what I miss the most so far from 3.0..sure we have the Camden Sand, Albany -7...I don't need those every night (even though that would rule face) but I truly miss what made '97-'98 special IMO

I thought Miner's review was off, personally.  I felt like Hood just kind of meandered w/out real substance to the jam.  The ending was drawn out, which was pretty neat, but I personally didn't find the version anything to write home about.  Oppositely, I felt that Light was the jam of the night.  Granted I haven't listened to it since last night, but I thought they locked into some really trippy, groove-oriented type II material.  Also, the floor was pretty much full and the arena didn't "feel" half empty (the only part that wasn't packed was right behind the band, and of course the closed-off sections).  I thought there was tons of energy in that room, which Miner didn't seem to convey in his review.

I've made it up to Undermind and it's just meh in my books so far.  That Roggae is rough, I guess it's been awhile since they played it but you'd think they could hit that ending at least.
Undermind is sounding pretty decent so far.
Looking forward to the 2nd set.

Isn't Undermind the 5th song in the show? Don't rush to judgment, dude.

Not that you're wrong.
Overall I give the show a weak 6 out of 10.

First set is just ok. My notes:
MySoul is a worthwhile 6minutes.
Roggae is cool (not perfect or life changing)
Undermind is one of the lesser versions of the year.
Stash is cool. I like it.
Possum is naught but a brief rock-out thingy.

Set two is better:
Mike's is fine and then it kinda drops into Light without a lot of finesse.
Light -> I Am Hydrogen is way cool. The "->" being the good stuff and the pairing of the two songs is nice. Hydrogen is flubbed near the end.
Weekapaug is not as slow as some of the fall versions. Perfectly ok.
Alaska has a nice ending.
#Line is fine. I like the placement of these two.
Mikeasupa is basstacular. Kinda forces it's way >
Harry Hood. Creative transition but not fluid at all. Hood is nice, with some good quiet space and it ends with the big dissonant build that drops >
Contact. If I didn't really like Contact I'd say the show was over here.
Zero doesn't stink as bad as some of the Fall versions.
First Tube was First Tube.

That Roggae is rough, I guess it's been awhile since they played it but you'd think they could hit that ending at least.

hell they couldn't hit that when they played it all the time.

Songs 1-3 are total throw aways....

Roggae...nice to see it return...decent version...

Undermind.....that's what this song does to a set, it undermines it....

BATR.....bounce bounce bounce.....

Poor Heart....Great to hear it back up to full speed.....notice Trey is absent....

This Stash is a fucking waste of time..... :(

I Didn't Know.....Fun song....always lame and this one doesn't let us down....

Broken Heart.....The band is ON.....Trey however is OFF.....He needs to figure out how to PLAY the damn song....Christ, put me on stage just for this song....I'll put down the chords he can't seem to figure out so he can blow his pseudo-slur whammy note bend slop all over it like a cheap whore....

Possum.....this one got hit by an 18 wheeler.....lifeless......

Mike's >  ......The tension? Not that much.....More whammy slop eh Trey?

Light > ......Whoa...a mini-intro? Whammy slop Trey.....The groove at the end (9:41->) is fuckin h337

H2 > .......usual, hey Trey....remember when you used to play that with a CLEAN tone? How about trying it that way again....k, thanx....

Weekapaug .....1/2 speed weaksauce......the first peak that was hit in the night......sad.

Alaska......in Florida? Wtf.....I'm serious, this is their Tennessee Jed just not nearly as good.....

BDTNL......yay, a song about youth.....piss poor attempt at a pop song boys.....

Makisupa >.....MIKE-is-supa

Hood......wtf is with this intro.....someone take the toys away from mr anastasio.....

Contact.....on the first night?

Zero.....not bad, at least there was no whale raping with the Languadoc in this one......

1st Tube......not a bad way to end the show.....this is the highlight of the show.

Ok...first night of a run after a lil break so there is expected to be some cobwebs.....amazingly though, no flubs! The sound I will say is MUCH better on the recording.......I still have major issues with it but oh well.....Trey is off in la-la land.....he's relying on that damn whammy too much to cover his sloppy note exicutions....sad to hear......

I'm going to give this show a 4.5 out of a possible 10.....

YOU GUYS EFFIN SUCK!

Fishman is mixed WAY fucked up.....why the hell are his cymbals louder than his snare? Whay does his kick sound like a thud instead of a KICK? You guys have got him mixed so you can't hear the intricacies of his fills.....

Again...get your heads outta your asses.....you finally got everything else almost golden, now just fix Fishman.....

Isn't Undermind the 5th song in the show? Don't rush to judgment, dude.

I was at Alpine and I think I would have traded even the second night to see last night.  Last nights show wuz $$$ imo.  I like it better than Charlottesville.  The fun factor is there (peep Makisupa, Harry Hood, Contact for evidence), the Jamz are there (peep Light and Stash) and the musicianship was a step above average.

I think that last nights show was hetty and the band is on their way to blowing back up.

I dug it.

Yeah, I've little doubt that it was fun to attend.
On my completely-made-up-on-the-spot-today scale of 1 to 10 any show above a 3 is probably fun to attend, even if you never feel the need to listen to the tape.

Last night got a 6.
Good song selection and not a ton of slop.

valid point, I wonder if I hadn't attended 29Nov.09 if I would have thought it was as good as it was being there live in person?  Knowing my review style, probably not as much.  But having said that I have listened to good shows on flac/xlII's that sound really good so my bottomline conclusion is, the tapes don't lie.

no kidding. worst stash of the year? i almost skipped ahead with three minutes left. it sounds like trey is strangling a pig.

roggae is NOT a decent version. the jam is so-so, but unfortunately it doesn't sound like a roggae jam, it's just a generic '03 jam. and the re-entry is awful. you'd think trey could remember those three chords. maybe next time.

those are the two i hit first... perhaps the rest of the show is better... but whatever, it's the warm-up for the run...

Mike's sounds decent.  I just decided to change the tone of the whale calls and if you do so, the groove and playing seems to be satisfactory, but they do faulter only slightly on the transition to light.  I think Light should have been grungier.  This one starts out "lightly."

Light seems to be the clear winner for the Jam of night 1.  I really liked where this one went.

I also thought Roggae was far from sucking, the composed parts were not nailed, but the jam was nice.

And My Soul was even worth a listen (and I don't usually like this song!)

There are def worse versions of Stash played this year....

I guess my taste in stash is different from you guys'  The stash gets delicate, psychedelic and dark.  Both Mike and Trey seperately hint at a segue into Manteca.  The stash does not peak well, but it contains gorgeous jamming.  I thought they could have peaked the ending better, but everyone seemed to force the ending.

The stash got an A for effort, imo.  Execution kinda like a C...but I thought that most stashes this year got a B+ for effort and a D in the execution dept.

People really like this Stash?  It's laughable to me.  Trey is way to into the effects and the little half step trill is terrible to me, it reminded me of the jam out of moma from 6/17/04 where Trey just noodles between the I and VII notes.

Part of the concept of stash is tension and release, and this version is really lacking to me.  It doesn't build the tension well at all.

side bar: Just spoke with McGrupp on the phone, he loved the show, said it was amazing.  He loved every moment of it and enjoyed the stash.

I feel ya....it wasn't "bad" per say.......but it was discombobulated noize.....I don't mind the noize, but there's gotta be a point to it or else it's just flailing around and giving the nod to land back into the riff or chord sequence.....weaksauce....

on a scale of 1 to 10 this Stash gets a solid 6.5

It was well executed for the lyrics, the jam had a nice build but then it just kinda hung in limbo and never did anything....

06/20
07/30

I just relistened...
More closely than last time.

I think it's good (aside from Trey's obvious flub in the woodblock/clapping section before the last verse) until ~9min when Trey just goes a bit off. Even up to this point Mike was really ruling it in the jam but Trey was doing fine; moving through a nice space. Come 9min, Trey's not leading in a coherent manner and he's messing with effects rather than tension. And while Page is trying hard to follow along, Trey keeps meandering from even sensible pitch (which makes it hard to follow.) (I guess that's the whammy. Although I play guitar, I don't use any effects 99% of the time.)
Anyway, The finish is weak but not horrible.

6.5 may be generous but it's close.

just now getting around to last night...skipped around a bit - Light and Stash did nothing for me..one of the weaker Lights IMO..it feels strange to say this but I actually dug the Alaska   :|     moving to Roggae now..

Oooohhh, what a night! I was fortunate enough to get extra cheap floor tix from a friend who was unable to go at the last minute, so that was a bonus. I was super pumped to hear My Soul and Roggae. Undermind was a treat, as always. Stash is one a my favorite jam vehicles, and from what I remember, this jam was super psychedelic. CK5 was wrecking shop the entire time! I am not a fan of BOABH whatsoever, so this one was kind of a buzz kill for me. I called Possum for a set closer. Standard Possum, but still fun.

I like Mike's, but I think it should stay in the first set. This Mike's definitely did not suck. I'm still not too fond of Light, the song, but the jams have been sick. I felt like this jam was going nowhere until about 9 minutes on. This is where it really picks up, and I totally lost it at this point! This light totally made the set for me. Once again, I will have to give it a proper re-listen to confirm, but this little bugger did not disappoint. I'm glad this Mike's Groove included H20. Always love a good Hydrogen. From what I remember, they nailed it. I was a happy camper at this point. Weekapaug was the weakest jam of the set IMO. I still have mixed feelings about Alaska, but I'm not complaining. I remember BDTNL being the tits! I love this tune, and I'm always pumped to hear it. Makisupa was fun with Mike's solo. I really enjoyed this Hood. I've been waiting all year to hear Contact, and I finally got one! I was super stoked to hear this tune. Character Zero was dead last on the list of songs I wanted to hear, but this one was much better than most of the other 3.0 Zero's. First Tube encore was tons of fun, and definitely created some crazy energy, leaving everyone in the arena foaming at the mouth for more!

Sample - A fitting opener. I've been digging 09 Samples a lot. This one was rockin and fun.

NICU - Fun

My Soul - Enjoyed it enough

Roggae - So psyched to catch this. Got spacey and groovey. Cool little jam.

Undermind - Pretty standard version. Fish was playin with power though.

Bouncin - Bouncin

Poor Heart - Fun

Stash - I hear there's some controversy on this one. This was one of those "you had to be there" jams. Yeah, it wasn't flawless, but you could tell they were trying to go far out there. I thought it was great. CK5 killed this one. Best stash of 09? nah. Good stash? yeah. Also, people at the show were getting REAL into it.

Didn't Know - Piss Break

BOABH - I like this song.

Possum - Rawky

Mike's - Some great trey playing in here

Light - Very interesting to hear light in this slot. I thought this was the jam of the night. They took it there. I love how percussive and "moody" it gets. Great jam. This is when people were starting to freak out.

Hydrogen - Not perfect, but brings us back to earth.

Weekapaug - Nice tempo. Good Energy. There was this one note that trey held forever, kinda like in YEM - CK5 worked it.

Alaska - Best Alaska ever. Seriously.

Number Line - Best number line ever. Seriously. (I'm a trey-geek. Seriously, have you heard better trey playing this year?)

Makisupa - Very fun. Mikes house.

Hood - I liked this transition a lot. Def a planned transition imo, it was too clean. Nothing groundbreaking about this hood, but it was a good one.

Contact - Awesome. the funk section in the middle had me moving the hardest out of any points in the night. sick.

Character zero - was SICK! I knew, since trey was on all night, that this would be good. and it was good.

First Tube - I'll just put it this way, after they finished, I busted out of the front entrance of the AAA running and screaming. I was AMPED UP after this. Great encore.

I thought 12/28 was a good show. It seems to me that the people that have more negative things to say about it are the ones who weren't there. Much easier to critique a show through headphones, and it's much easier to indulge when you're right there bathing in phish. Coming from someone who was there (and "sober" during the show), this show did not suck (and neither did the stash).

fwiw, I thought the Stash was awesome McGrupp.  It's my favorite stash of 3.0.  Nobody else here really likes it.  The only controversy is that FPFR likes somethng that nobody else does!

Glad you had a killer time man.  This second set is freaking fantastic.  And Mike's totally belongs in the second set.  I love this show.  It's not as good as the other three, but it is still freaking great.  It gets a C+/B- in my book.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Seriously disappointing after Trey seeming to be on his way back to greatness this fall. How can he just shit on Mike's and Harry with that STUPID whammy?

its funny, i've now officially fallen in love with the 29th >the 30th. all three shows are in my top five of '09.
so, i obviously have to give this showa listen, but from what i can tell most people are hating on this show.

Giving this Miami run a proper listen over the next day or two. Started with this night obviously. TOTAL. weak. sauce. Shitty, uninspired, unimaginative, uncreative playing. Garbage. Terrible Mikes, goes nowhere. Hydrogen wonderfully trainwreck'd by Trey. Light big fucking meh. Only songs I liked were Roggae and Makisupa. First set complete throwaway. What a disaster. Trey can't play 1st Tube anymore. Sometimes his mistakes are so bad it makes me wonder if he is hitting it again. Glad the next three nights get better....

It's a lot easier to criticize when you're hearing it through a pair of headphones...

Not saying you can't have your own opinions, but if you're trying to call that ^ being objective, well you're crazy.

ah well, we will simply have to agree to disagree . I'm coming to the conclusion that this run pretty much blows, as in sucks. There are good moments sprinkled throughout, but there is definitely a drop off from the last shows of fall tour, a level which they don't really reach until new year's eve (the night before is close). I believe marmar mentioned how it is pretty obvious they did not practice in the lead up to these shows (save for maybe arriving a day or two early). If you listen to the four nights in one sitting, as I have just done, this is incredibly evident. And that fact is disappointing or revealing. And I'm really sorry, the Mike's H and Paug are brutal. Hydrogen is fucking horrendous.

Def not trying to pass this off as the best phish that's ever happened, but I thought (most) of the Miami run was some of the best phish of 3.0

I'm one of those guys  :hereitisyousentimentalbastard

Opinion is opinion though. I was there, and felt the heat, and that is def a factor...

I guess there are a lot of other shows I prefer in 3.0. To me, these shows were missing improv and risk aside from a couple gems (the first night was completely off). Keep in mind, that is the part of Phish that I search for, I am aware others have different attractions. I'm sure these shows were pure :rawk: in person, but in the comfort of my stereo, they came across as bland. For example, the 31st was well played, no real flubs, everyone was on, but there was zero adventure, aside from the prank. The DWD was smoking but 8 minutes of straight ahead licks, I was saying to myself "this forebodes well" but then it didn't go anywhere. Very well played, but no adventure.

I know Slim would agree with you and he wasn't there.  That's what's great about Phish, different shows appeal to different people.

Miami was way more than icing... and I wasn't even there.

It truly was a culmination of the whole years work and what they wanted to achieve. The jams were consistently superior compared to any 4 night run with exception to RR. I can only hope they continue with the same vigor they showed in Miami  8-)

Going back and listening to this run again. Trey's playing is definitely picking up speed and confidence, which is a good sign for 2010. Check out the #Line jam as an example.
