I thought the whole petrichor dealio was pretty cool. I was fully entertained.

Suzy was a riot. Entire place was having a blast during that. The absurdity of the ballon puppies piling up on stage was awesome.

Rest of the 3rd set... ya know...

Carini and Piper had some sweet moments. Over all, it was just a good f'n time.

It really did feel and sound like TAB post-Suzy. They couldn't even jam because Trey was all caught up in making the horn lines fit in. Even First tube... I do like the horns in that song yet...  couldn't help but think how much harder they usually rage it when it's just the 4 of them.  That Guedo behind the percussion was no Karl Perazzo either!

I really did enjoy Petrichor though. I didn't think I would, but I did. Phish Circus.

It was an all out dance party.  The place was going through the roof. I welcome all the hype dancers they want to throw at us.

Well, i guess you could start with the flying hotdog, gamehendge time factory, Clifford Ball Tweezer with the trampoline people, father time, tower jam with the repelling dancers, 7 below dancers, drive in set, haunted house, international meatstick dancers, storage jam, steam floating dancers.... to name few.

ser. tho, the Suzy sounded great and i thought it looked funny how the band was drowning in baloons.
i started watchin some of another clip though with the dancers in the rain and i was  completely lost.

Fun show.  The opening 2 were great but the rest of the 1st set didn't do it for me.  The second set was great.  I think Sand was the highlight for me, besides More.  Nothing was played like the night before though, but it was a great set.  I liked the 3rd set OK.  Petrichor through No Mans Land was awesome.  Loved trhe dancers and effects.  Petrichor with brass and percussion was great.  555 was decent.  Could have done without Ocelot and Tide Turns.  After a 4 night run, I really have very low expectations for the final set.  The encore was obvious choice, but nothing special.  All in all, I thought this was a decent NYE show, there have been far worse (2 years ago in Miami comes to mind).  96 is pretty shitty too (and 90).  This was a solid run with the 30th being the clear winner.

I like this 2001, it feels right.  Trippy ambience in opening this version.  Great way to begin a set.

I'm listening to the 2nd set now.
Agreed that 2001 is cool.
In fact so far the whole this is pretty great. You've got dark Carini, a Jammy Twist, extended Asshanded intro to Piper which gets pretty weird in its own right pretty early on.
That's as far as I've gotten.

As far as first goes, it looked routine so, after Don't Bogart That Joint (which was pretty cool, right?) I skipped it for now.

I don't see what the big gripe with the gag is, that was easily as good or better than the Meatstick bit.
And if you took the whole 4 nights into account, there was some really great playing this run

My favorite gag is the JEMP truck, if you can even call that a "gag."

This one is near the bottom, but the Runaway Golf Cart Marathon still holds the title of worst, imo.

Only going off of the streams I heard (missed a few songs and all of NYE), my highlights were...
28th - Stash, Wolfman's Brother, Golden Age, Martian Monster -> Tweeprise Jam > Martian Monster
29th - Theme > Split Open & Melt, DwD -> WTU?, Harry Hood
30th - Bathtub Gin, Tweezer > Sparks > Ghost > Light -> Party Time

I thought Petrichor sounded pretty cool with the horns and I always love Jen's backup vox (not to mention Chainsaw's gams). But I've kinda had it with the interpretive dance numbers (although for some reason unbeknownst to me the Meatstick dancers hold a special place in my heart). Overall it just fell kinda flat to me. Suzy def looked like a blast, but it was just one kick in the nuts after another to follow. I'm glad everyone had fun, but I'm also not in the slightest feeling like I missed anything. So I guess everybody wins.

I checked out every set from this run, not much grabbed my ear except the last 2 or 3 mins from DwD(cool ambient jam) and the 2001 from 31Dec.  Jamming wise they aren't doing anything new or interesting, Trey hitting chords and using whatever effect pedal he uses gets old every other jam.

I actually felt the opposite. Trey was pulling off some great runs and not just strumming or leaning on effects as much in a lot of what I mentioned earlier. The Hood had some very tasteful licks.
I guess to each their own but I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. I guess I'll give it another listen to see if I was just caught up in the moment on the stream.

exactly.  overall in hindsight I think this was a down year for Phish.  After taking 2011, '12(actually kicks major ass!) and half of '13 off from listening, I got back on the train Fall 2013.  Overall I felt they were playing very well culminating in Summer 2015.  This year didn't do much for me.

I thought Petrichor was one of the better gags they've done. Felt like actual art. The vantage point from behind the stage was cool and I don't think the pro shot clip that's on youtube does it justice.

Agreed. It seemed like they were picking up some steam on the West Coast leg of summer and I def enjoyed Nashville > Atlanta, but short of that, not much else from this year that I'll revisit (excluding Mexico, obvs).

I'm also kind of troubled by Trey's apparent eagerness to drop his guitar for the marimba lumina. I mean, some of those band drum segments were really great, but they should supplement the band's jamming, not be the main course.

That looked to have been pretty cool to me.

I know that a bunch of people don't like Big Boat songs but... you had to know it was coming.

I listened to set three and I enjoyed it. There's some good playing, the additional instrumentation and song selection is kind of in line with what some of us were expecting for set 3 on 10/31. Horns on songs that were written for horns: Good deal.

in fact, I'm fairly certain that some people are still sad that they don't keep doing that now.

I sat out most of the second half of the 90s, but caught 2 shows in 1997: the first two nights of Worcester, T-day weekend.

By the second night, I was getting kind of tired of the cowfunk; they 'redeemed' themselves with the hour long Runaway Jim.

Looking back now, it's just another moment in a sea of great moments. I remember getting annoyed with Trey's new guitar sounds in summer '94, too.

The takeaway here, imo: de gustibus non disputandum. There's no point arguing over taste (even your own).

I was wondering what they were dropping, since the items had a lot of bounce but the dancers had no problem then walking all over them. Poor bastards having to clean them all up after each test run.

Judging only by the measure of stagecraft, this one is the standout, imo. I'll always be loyal to the Meatstick gag, though. And the Kung of 92/93.

2 other observations:

-I think the lead dancer during Petrichor (no mask) was onstage for the Wombat debut, H'ween 2013? Nah.

-I fuckin' love it when they have backup singers.

Birdman, wife and co. all couldn't exactly figure out what the 'rain' was.

That was cool. I like confusion.

don't get me wrong.  i love to rage, and that 3rd set was pretty slow...but...new years phish shows are the best things ever, if you don't let your expectations get the best of you.  that rain stunt they pulled off was truly amazing.  nobody does that shit.  that's why phish is the best.

the 2000, 2001, and 2004-2008 new years eves sucked so bad.  there's just no comparison to spending that evening with phish (either in person or on couch tour) as opposed to not...no matter what they play.

When they dropped into the 12/6/97 post-Izabella funk during Tube on 12/7/97 everyone was hating it.

Ha, that's not true. I was on rec.music.phish those dates, and people couldn't get enough of it. I still can't get enough of the Reba from the latter date, but the MI show is overrated.

What in the hell are we talking about here again?

Its a new years show.  They're never outstanding.  Ever.

The rain were orbies.  If you have kids you've probably seen these before.

Looked cool on my TV but this is why I don't fight NYC on NYE anymore.  Well that and the kids also want to party now.

Anyway.  Hope they can carry some intensity into Mexico.  Trey was clearly very proud of himself and good for him  Keep it up Big Red!!

Mike looked bored.

First NYE show for me.  First set was mostly a snooze, although KDF was good and Divided Sky was something I needed.  Walls was pretty nice too.

2nd set had a lot of good in it.  A lot.

3rd set also had a lot of good in it, too.  But Ocelot and Tide Turns are not what I want in a 3rd set on NYE, despite how great Tide Turns was with horns.  Ocelot can just die.  Fuck that song right in the chorus.

First Tube was fucking righteous though.

Definitely doing NYE again, and DEFINITELY never sitting behind the stage at MSG again.  Sound just wasn't great.  Never again.  Good time though.

Don't get me wrong.  I've always had fun on NYE with Phish.  Think I've seen 8 NYE shows with them.  Its just never the tight cohesive Phish we all love.  Too much pressure, different vibe etc.  It just won't happen.

I do find it funny that for years people have wanted a set with horns and finally they deliver and people don't like it.  So I started thinking of what other tunes they could have played with horns and they were all tunes from 91-92.  Phish is not interested in the "rear view mirror" so I'm not surprised it went down the way it did.

Anyone for a Garden Party.  Can't please everyone.....

I would. And I definitely prefer a lot of '99 over '98. See PNC '99, Oswego, Nassau..... Funny, I really don't listen to Phish anymore being that my living situation is not conducive to blasting music, as well as a line of thinking that believed that I'd be best to take a break from listening to 1.0 so I could appreciate 3.0. But to jog my memory of why I like '99 so much, I went back to my .net show list and began checking out set lists.....ugh, good lord do I ever miss the good ol' days.

As far as shows seen and my level of appreciation/obsession for Phish, 99 was where I peaked.
The fun I had that year at the 4 shows I saw are almost unparalleled with any other year that I caught them.
