Title: Goose
Post by: anthrax on July 11, 2021, 05:44:51 PM
last time through denver, goose didn't even sell 500 tickets.  enter a global pandemic.  then the return of large crowds and live music and the past 2 nights goose sold 10,000 tickets at $45 a pop.  what the hell is going on here?    i'm listening now.  vocals are good for a jamband.  jams are very clean and bright.  not much darkness or heaviness.  but it's nothing that hasn't been done before.  what's your take on these guys?

I've head that they were meh at jamming but had a singer who could actually sing. That's all I know, never heard them myself.

Listened to a show of theirs a few nights ago and enjoyed it. Got good energy and some good tunes, I'd probably see 'em if they came around here.

Goose has blown up faster/bigger than any (jam)band I've witnessed in the past ten years.  I, for one, am jealous.  :wtu:

I was an acquaintance of the drummer at Berklee but haven't met the others. What I can say is that they are talented. Far more talented, IMO, than other young jambands that have gained momentum in the last decade. The drummer rips. The guitarist rips and has a solid voice, both tonally and pitch wise.  The whole auto-tuned vocal thing they use live is definitely startling..... perhaps not my thing, but it's working for them, def gives off a "vibe" and probably helps keep the chicks in the front row.   I do feel they have a certain something that other upcoming jam-bands don't quite have.....

Their rate of success is something to be astonished by. I had a discussion with our manager today, who recently met with Goose's manger.... and it seems they are aiming higher and higher. They just played two sold out-door shows in Denver this week... are headlining the Mission Ballroom here in Denver this fall (which Trey Band played) and apparently are in discussion with First Bank Center for their next return??!?! They'e been in touch with Mohegian (yeah.... where Phish played) for more CT gigs?!?!  Not saying FirstBank or Mohegian are actually happenning but the fact that venues those size are even in touch with them is crazy to me.

I like em. They have decent song, good stage presence and are quite talented. I'm not obsessed with them like I was with the GD and Phish but that's probably due to my age and where I'm at in musical taste at this stage in life.

Hope your management is taking notes. I don't want to take anything away from them but I can think of a band or two that I enjoy more that I think are worthy of rising towards this level.

I've heard of Goose much more than I've actually heard Goose. But happy to offer an under-informed take, obviously. What I heard sounded like generic jamband music to me, like it was the turn of the century again. Good for them for their success though.

I first heard of them because of the drummer, who kills it.
I saw a vid of their Peach Fest set from 2019 and thought they were good, better than most newer bands. Some songs are good, some are kinda sappy. Some jams I really like, some, not so much. I think I would be tired of them for 90 minutes or more, but if they were in my neighborhood I just might go.

Over the years, I've seen some musicians I thought were really talented but never broke out to anything, and some who I just wonder how they got there. I think there is an element to right place - right time to a lot of this. These guys are good and were in the right place at the right time.

I also jumped to Goose last night for shiggles. All prior comments still apply. The bongo player was hilariously inactive during the hour or so I watched. Prooobably wouldn't be in the band if they were to reform it today.

I love Goose.  I'm not sure what's holding you back from these guys, but man... they kill.  They are absurdly talented, and professional.  These kids mean business, and I like that.  They have it all, the chops, the infrastructure, the fun attitude, etc.  It's a whole thing.  They have the package.

I was introduced to them via Matt from Formula 5.  I didn't really get it at first, but the more i peaked in and out, the more I got interested.

In the middle of finishing their show from yesterday.  I love it.  What I like is that they kind of take the best of Phish, the Dead, and Bisco and put it all together into a fresh thing.  I like that they go realllllllly low and slow with the ballads like the Dead, they have the manic tension peaks of Phish, and then the synth dance of Bisco.  What I also love is the heavy reverb and ambience in their sound, appealing to the post-rock and shoegaze side of me.

The thing that makes them winners is the video and marketing.  Bands are more than music, and they understand this more than anybody.  They are ahead of the curve in every facet of their business, and that's why they're excelling over every other band.  When the music is all equal, it's the accessories that put you ahead.  Merch, iconography, marketing, etc etc.

Multi-cam pro-shot SBD's up after every show. They're hungrier than every other band, and that's also why they're winning.  They don't stop, and they are a force.  They are not fucking around, and that's a catchy energy.  Lots of other bands stop at the music and make half-assed attempts at marketing, merch, etc etc.  These guys are steamrolling the business aspect of being a band.  It's fun to watch.

They are the pattern for how to be successful right now.  It's all there.

This is one of my favorite jams, and is probably my favorite song of theirs.

https://goosetheband.bandcamp.com/track/creatures-29

Criticisms of Goose:

1) they need more songs
2) they need to get scary and take a bit more risks.   (Caveat:  they are still new, so lets put them at about 1990 in development compared to Phish.  The big jams and Type 2 wizardry is coming.  Not every band starts at Fall '97)

However, they are so good that I don't really care that they aren't Type 2 masters yet.  Their music is thrilling, and I love listening to them.  As long as they keep going, things are going to get REAL interesting for them.

I've checked them out here and there, random streams etc.  Certainly not my cup of tea however it is interesting to see peeps go gaga over them I mean their shows look fun etc.  It reminds of the time I saw moe opening for the Allman Bros.  A few hardcores were dancing around, singing every lyric.  I'm sitting there watching in total amusement.   :samurai:

I've watched almost two hours of their webcasts from the last two nights posted here. They are not bad, honestly. Totally inoffensive. I say that from the perspective of this... a lot of bad jamband music literally offends me. tDB, PPPP, even moe. to some extent - these bands offend me. Goose is ok.

That said, in 2 hours I have yet to see that super-dorky guy play the guitar that's slung over his shoulder. Is it just part of his outfit? Cuz, his stylist sucks... which brings me to the part that starts to offend me about them. I think they have stylists... that's fucking weird. I mean, Phish does, too, these days. But a young band like these kids shouldn't.

The keyboardist was playing guitar periodically as I watched last night. He's pretty talented but his pants did offend me. The main guitarist is talented, too. My friend called him "fast Jerry" and that sounds about right.

Peter plays guitar on certain songs but it seems he is playing much more keyboard lately, which i think is okay.

This is perhaps my favorite Goose song, and he starts it on guitar.  This one comes in from a jam so it's not a clean start the way it normally would be, but it's great.  the jam is much more wild and chaotic than normal, I get shades of 93-95 Phish with the tension in this one.  I like it a lot.

https://goosetheband.bandcamp.com/track/creatures-29

The other thing is that Goose took me a bit to really latch onto.  I kept peaking in and out, and I always enjoyed it, but I feel like they've matched the jump to big venues and really brought their A-game.  They're meeting the expectations.

THIS show floors me.  The first set, specifically.  Wow.  If you're genuinely curious and have some time, do this first set.  This is the show that cemented it for me where it's like "Okay, yeah.  These kids mean actual business."

The "Arrow" opening and then the Flodown intro jam, and the Arcadia jam are just soaring.  It's incredible stuff.

I have a friend who seems committed to getting into these guys. I was going to see a show with him in January, but then omicron peaked, and the idea of getting covid at a Goose show was not acceptable, so we skipped that.

Been listening to some of their stuff and trying to figure out why I don't like it.

I think the word I keep coming back to is "generic." They're very talented. They've got some good funky rhythms going on, some very nice jam peaks. But everything just sounds so... plain. The songs themselves are absolute junk, just pure jam-band bland, but yeah... they play them... well? I guess?

I can kind of get their rocketing to fame. They do all the jam-band stuff very well. It's just they don't do it with any real sense of personality or originality. It's like they went to school for Jam Bands, studied real hard, and now do all the stuff people want to hear very well.

But where's the weirdness? Where's the depth? I just can't find anything to hold on to. I've managed at most to listen to two songs in a row, and then it's too boring and annoying to continue.

Saying they're young, so of course they're not as good as Phish yet, misses the point. Young Phish were still writing songs like Fluffhead. I don't listen to much '80s Phish, but when I do, they sound like the weirdest bar band of all time. I mean who writes songs like early Phish songs?

To my ears, Goose is polished in all the most boring ways. So what if they eventually figure out how to go "type 2"? Who wants to wait through those dull songs to get there? Imagine if every Phish song was Soul Planet. That's what Goose is to me.

Good for them for figuring out what "jam band fans" want to hear. They're doing it well. But I'll pass. (Though I still may end up seeing them the next time they hit the Bay Area, just so I can bad mouth them to my friend having seen an actual show (or who knows? Maybe I'll be so blown away I'll recant this post)).

So....not hatin' on the music itself..... just a general thing I noticed... why do they have a percussionist if they don't include him in the mix? If I wasn't watching a video, I would think it's one drummer. Even watching the video...He's BARELY audible.... in a few moments, a shaker or tambo pops out but he's nearly inaudible most of the time. And it's not just this particular mix. I don't get it.

Apparently Goose and UM overlapped at 420Fest last weekend. Joel from UM noted on Twitter that their audience thinned considerably for their second set which was when Goose started up on another stage.

I think he was exaggerating to a degree but folks in the replies did notice the increased dancing space.

Happy for any band to succeed though, for sure

Has Twiddle fallen off or is PPPP actually big now? Glad to say I guess it's all escaped my attention.

Dopapod is too weird to be big. Big Something is probably too stuck in between being too jammy and not jammy enough.

I had the same thought about the Goose percussionist after watching some random stream not long ago. Is he simply a friend of theirs, a holdover from when they were playing Local Ale House but now he's not actually good enough to include in the mix?

Yeah they were definitely on their way up before Jeff joined.  I agree about his mix level... you can barely hear him sometimes.  Most times, I guess.  I like it when I can hear him.

He came along in 2020.  Used to do upright bass for acoustic sets with them, and I guess he lives/lived with Rick and Peter.  Something like that.

I first heard Ominous Seapods when I got a moe. show in a B&P transaction from the back pages of Relix back I the 90's. The filler on the last side of the last tape of the show had part of an OS show. The dude threw in an extra tape with the rest of the OS show on it. There's one song that stands out in my head all these years later. Theme For Another Enlightened Rogue. I loved that song!

Huh. I can't quite put my finger on what's happening here, but it's as though with Trey playing guitar this band sounds better than without Trey playing guitar.

Yet trying to sit through that whole 38 min clip, I'm still nodding off. This band is weirdly boring.

I stayed up and watched this show.
It's a thing that happened for sure.
Apparently we'll be talking about it on HFPod today.

These guys are the heir to the throne of Widespread Panic.

Trey genuinly digs Goose music and has for some time.  Makes sense given where treys songwriting and solo stuff has been going.  I don't know if part of it is one of those "I want to see this thing/scene/family/legacy I helped create go on without me" that old people feel or what.  This won't be the last time Trey tries to help these guys.

I will say, I got a good chuckle seeing Trey attempt to play "fast" at this part... and then 15 seconds later the Goose guitarist takes over and plays what Trey was trying to play... but much cleaner.

See, if you're a jamband, and you don't name the band after the drummer, the drummer is going to leave.  That's how life works

Alos, not sure why I follow anything. goose, maybe just because it's in my face all the time and I can't escape it but looked at the tour dates they dropped today and man, they are playing some giant venues.  So weird.  Last time they played out here they played at the paramount which is pretty small and tickets were like $2 on stub hub. It will be interesting to see if they fill them, but seems like they always book these big venues and then they are half empty.

Dude we were supposed to open for them in Albany at Parish (aka Red Square) which is like 375 cap, in 2019.  Eggy got that gig instead because our singer had a sound gig he couldn't get out of.  Now Eggy is huge, and Goose played SPAC.

Wild to see it happen in front of us.
