This may be somewhat anecdotal, but my Uncle, who was close with the

band and crew told me that for years the Dead would purposefully sabotage themselves...screw up on purpose when they thought their scene was getting too big. The people who couldn't take disappointment left. After Jerry's near-death experience in 1986 they said Heck With it, and went on to record a good popular album. If they did it, then I don't find it too hard to believe that
