I use records for that and don't have to justify it to my friends.

Can we talk about the Dead?  I'd love to talk about the fucking Grateful Dead, for once, can we please discuss the Grateful FUCKING Dead!?!?!?!

We are all and we are all we are
Far flung bits of Sun and bits of Stars
From the  ocean from the land from the
beginning to end
Backwards forwards back toward
we belong

We took the long ride from Nashville to catch this show. Easily one of my fave 94 shows. My first Buffalo Bill, Makisupa, and Bike!
Paug FTMFW!

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

If this is love, I'm never going home..

:frustrated:  I've been needing to add back my 1994 drive for months now.  guess this will be my excuse to actually do it.

First listen (shows noobness)
I

MFMF - Always one of my fav openers.  And especially with fall tour it brings in the extra spookiness.  And this version has more extra than normal as well, really cool version.

Sparkle - a tour when this song shone, not bad at all and very cool >

Simple - right off the bat the song has a very different feel than these days.  Maybe cause they seem to be in a different key, maybe its just me but I like it.  Everyone is absolutely firing on all cylinders. >

Jim - Nothing but more FIRE!!

Foam - Absolutely great.

Lawn Boy - A needed cool down time for the boys before the awesome that's about to ensue.

Split - this show helps me remember why I really love this song.  This gets raw as fuck and just plain dirty the way I like this song.  Anyone else think different go look at Rjs avatar and call it a night. The only thing is I would have liked to hear it finish > buffalo bill

Buffalo Bill - Always a pleasure to hear >

Makisupa - sounds like mercy at first but a different reggae emerges. Time for me to :smoke: cough cough, oh what?  Sick heavy metal in makisupa :rawk:  >

Rift - and out of a great segue comes the best first set closer ive listened to in a while.  Nailed like a prom date from all fronts, and that's saying something.

II

Disease - I dig the spaceship droppin in prior to mikes intro.  I cant say much but the obvious (94 = no lack of energy). Ragin shit right there and a cool extended finish to make the >

TMWSIY - you know what it is, the answer is soothing. >

Avenu - Mazel tov with some heavy mike  >

TMWSIY - More soothing >

Sparks - into a straight rippin version of one of my fav Who tunes.

Uncle Pen - it just wouldn't be fall 94 without some more grassy phish.  Love this.

YEM - Wow page really shining in the composed section. Whether it be the space-ness in the beginning or really hittin those ivories loud as hell. Do I hear Trey during a tramp section? Jam nothing besides top notch.  Talk about hittin strides.  Well Done D&B.  Fun spooky jungle vocal jam.

HYHU>BIKE>HYHU - :packs one more:  Good fun bike, yeah trey on drums.

Antelope>Sleeping Monkey>Antelope - An sweet antelope>one of the most beautiful versions ive heard>the finish of a fuckin sweet antelope.

E

Hood - Cool choice for encore.  Also my favorite type of hood, the type where the crowd doesn't know about hood chants.  Quite the mix of rocker/moving, im getting tingly no joke.

WOW.

Awesome choice, if you don't know how I feel about this show you didn't read my review.

This may be my favorite show.
I won't get into better or worse, but I do prefer it to Halloween.
I'd rather dwell in some dark holler where the sun refuses to shine, where the wild birds of heaven can't hear me when I whine.

Set1:

A twisted op'ner
My Friend My Friend is strong
and cuts to the point

Sparkle played early
and played well is most welcome.
Hot and done quickly

As a standalone
Simple works for me also
this runs right into

a Runaway Jim
Which is all heat all the time.
Then, an old school jump

into tasty Foam
As I'm dancing in my chair
I'll call this a win.

Another Lawn Boy
Not that I am complaining
Michael Gordon: Bass

This Melt rips faces
It goes off the map a bit
woah, chainsaw guitar

peak and drop into
Looking for owls? Awesome
it's Buffalo Bill

This creeps on into
makisupa policeman
with a heavy jam

That was not Irie!
Actually a nice twist
Which then launches Rift

Rift is much hotness
I would have needed the break
after they finished

Set2:

Disease to open
Nice intro. Modulations
make for a jam

The feedback outro
goes into The Man Who Stepped...
Alvenu sandwich

Which is always cool
Drifts into an ambient
sort of space which is

Sparks! It's fucking Sparks!
Sweet. I want to see this song
So good. While you're up...

Uncle Pen is next!
Get your bluegrass boogie on.
Great playing on this.

You Enjoy Myself
suffice to say that this one
is text-book awesome

After Vocal Jam
Fish sings us a song called Bike.
Shout out to Gerald

The Lope slips sweetly
right into Sleeping Monkey
then back to the rawk

Encore:

Harry, oh, Harry.
Where do you go when the lights
go out? Somewhere great.

That's my guess, at least.
Nice ending to a hot show
Hope you enjoyed it.

Hot damn, what a scorching first set.  The boys were so tight at this point, they turn, pivot, shoot and score on a dime.  Which really means they are able to stop and express any musical idea that occurs...  And major EXALT for the sbd.  This sounds amazingly crisp

My Friend- great opener.  They nail this one
Sparkle- standard opening combo, but Trey rips through this one
Simple- very playful.  You can tell they like playing it
RunJim- now we are talking.  Lots of energy throughout.  Trey nails the early solo, and then they all take turns
Foam- This is Foam at its peak.  They know the song inside and out, which allows they to tear it apart and build it back up.  Amazing interpretation of falling into the well and good exploration of life at the bottom
Lawn Boy- Mr Page McConnell (is the theme of round 10)
Split- LEFT LEFT BODY BLOW- Mike Tyson style.  Serious heat.  Hard to pay attention to anyone of them because they are all kick ass.  This is all about the Jedi though, love the way he finds that note with the sustain and then bends it back on top of itself.  They dont quite give you that full release though as they morph into...
Buffalo Bill- those demented fuckers.  Great version with Fish laying down a funky back beat which asks for...
Makisupa- Policeman came to my house.  Love the ending
Rift- Trey gets impatient here and destroys the early section before calming down enough to let Page a have a turn

Top notch playing here.  The band is one unit and they are able to shift tones, tempos, styles, whatevers without even thinking.  The 1-2-3 combo of Jim, Foam, and Split is explosive, and the turn into Bill/Maki is what Phish is about.   This first set is all about building the tension though, and Rift, despite it being well played, does not deliver for me.  Luckily there is a second set!
