What about 'Smokey? That and 'Cerebus' are what he's been referred to as in past seasons. Carlton and Damon have said that they have always called it 'Cerebus'.

Desmond did not attempt to return to the island.
The day of the Ajira Air flight, Ben shot Desmond while attempting to kill Penny. Desmond managed to beat the living hell out of Ben and save Penny's life.

Then he was taken to the hospital where Penny met Eloise Hawking for the first time... Widmore was there too but he didn't go into the hospital.
