What a loss.  He certainly leaves behind a huge legacy.

RIP.

I was just listening to CoreaHancock earlier today.  :music:

You haven't lived until you've had a robot shart in your ear and followed along in the live setlist thread while it happens.

I saw Chick at the Toronto jazz festival around 2000. The venue is right downtown next to the City Hall clock tower.

Right as he and his band sat down to play the 9 bells from the clock tower rang out... he made some joke about it and started the show.

At 10pm he anticipated the bells and actually worked them into the music they were playing, almost like a call and response.

At 11pm he took the stage for the encore, anticipated the bells and used them to count off his encore.

He has some other tricks involving the crowd singing which were very cool as well but the clock bells were quite memorable.

I loved ?My Spanish Heart? the first time I heard it, and Now He Sings Now He Sobs is a masterpiece.

I was lucky enough to see him twice

Once with Brian Blade and Christian McBride, the other with Bela Fleck

The guy was amazing

Chick and Herbie are the best of that generation

RIP. And thanks for the amazing music

Shit, that's heartbreaking.
I was late to develop my appreciation for Chick Corea but I also got a chance to see him with Herbie at Massey Hall in 2015.
It was such a legit music experience that I felt I didn't have the instrument knowledge to truly appreciate what I was watching.
I left with my mind severely scrambled at what I just heard.
RIP

RIP, I am not really that familiar with much of his work, but I look forward to listening to more of it in the near future.

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

Well, you would be surprised.  I mean you are certainly familiar with In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew. And Fillmore West recordings.  And Jack Johnson.  And if not familiar with Return to Forever and the Stanley Jordan stuff, you should be.  I was just starting to get into Silent Way and Bitches Brew around 1990 when he came to play at Cornell and I went in pretty blind but it was a mind blower.  The guy's discography is just unreal, fro early Getz stuff to all the later fusion stuff and later 70's collabs with Herbie.  Heard the news and immediately headed to my stacks to grab the Spaces album he did with Larry Coryell and of course, I can't fucking find it.  RIP.

I've caught many Chick Corea incarnations beginning in the early 90's, the most recent being the Hiromi "dueling" piano duet tour a few years ago. Thanks for the all the music Chick!! RIP.

Yeah of course I know the Davis stuff and Return to Forever, I meant I haven?t listened to many of his solo albums, which of course I should.

yep

and don't limit yourself just to the fusion / electric.

the acoustic stuff is great too. I wouldn't call it "straight ahead" - even when he played standard he took them to entirely new places.
