For short, I'll call this the trench project.  The term "Funk Trench" refers to the area between the soundboard and the stage.  I found it to be fitting for this project since:
a) many of the shows will be very funky
b) the bulk of the recordings were made in the Funk Trench
c) I couldn't think of a more creative name

As the title states, this project will consist of 50 shows, which were picked by me.  You will see several themes within the picks.  For example, picks 6-10 all contain shows in which a new jam vehicle erupts, and marks the beginning of a new era for a song.
no themes due to several delays and my attempt to avoid interference with more important projects on etree and LL.  Basically this project is FUBAR, but I'll finish it out because I like to keep my word (most of the time  ).

Notes

------

There are a three places (on the original DAT) that sound like brief 'skips'. There is one at the beginning of Julius (which is barely noticable), and two in Possum (which are very noticable). There is also a fair amount of clipping resulting from the levels being too high on the DAT recording. It is not very noticable, from my repeated listening, except on some vocal parts. All problems noted here were in the source DAT.

PATCH EDIT NOTES:

Dave's master DAT of the AKG source had several spots of digi-noise in the first couple of minutes of the tape.
I used the widely circulated NAK 300 for patches at the following locations in Suzy Greenberg:

START - END
00:10.6 - 00:29.8
00:40.3 - 00:42.6
01:05.1 - 01:10.4
01:20.2 - 01:25.3
01:36.7 - 01:42.2
01:51.0 - 01:56.2
02:10.6 - 02:15.5
05:46.0 - 05:51.2

Please note that the first two sections of digi-noise were in the intro crowd noise, before Suzy really even started.
All of these locations included a few seconds of cross-fade for a smooth and easy transition.
The start time listed above is the moment when it's fully the NAK source, and
the end time is the moment when it's fully back to the AKG source.

Other than the few spots of digi-noise which have been fixed, this AKG source sounds fantastic, in my opinion.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. One last big thanks to Dave for letting me borrow his master DAT.

Red Sea Pedestrian

Props for pick #2. It was the first live Phish I ever heard (through the official release), and is one of my favourite shows. +k for taking on a project like this as well.

Red Sea Pedestrian

Holy shit, just finished listening to Pick #1 the whole way through. I'm fucking speechless, that's some of the best Phish I've ever heard. Extremly energetic jamming, very tight composed sections (I noticed very few mistakes). The Possum, Ghost and YEM were the real highlights for me, as well as Julius and SOAM (the latter is always a highlight for me, one of my favourite Phish tunes). I'm going to burn copies of this show to everyone I know, anybody who enjoys music needs to hear it.

nab

Nice selections so far phan.  Looks like you have another A+ project in the works.

cactusfan

this seems like an awesome project.
i love pick number one, that show is off the hook.

but i have to ask, how does 12/14 qualify as funk? i'm not a big fan of this show-- i know, heresy-- and the reason is that it's just SO rock and roll. even more so than everything else in dec. '95. it's like the anti-funk show of all anti-funk shows.

so anyway. just curious...

sophist

Well its not funky by any means.  I did mention in the 1st post of the thread that many of the shows would be very funky, but not all.

For short, I'll call this the trench project.  The term "Funk Trench" refers to the area between the soundboard and the stage.  I found it to be fitting for this project since:
a) many of the shows will be very funky

I figured the name "Buried in the Funk and Picking Your Melted Face Off The Ground Project" was a bit too long.  so I went with "Funk Trench."

I hope that explains it.   :-)
