Really just couldn't have made SC happen w/o failing school. Already missed 2 days for Broomfield, so I had to make it back to Boston for classes on Thursday... won't be missing anymore from here on out though!
^^^good man WTU
when I left for college, my sister told me "go to class, no matter what. even if you have to vomit in the garbage can on the way, just go to class". no regrets and all that, but I'd have to work a lot less hard right now if I had followed her advice. :-)
I only listened to set II.
II
Crosseyed and Painless, Dirt, Fluffhead, 2001 > Tweezer > Show of Life, You Enjoy Myself*
C&P - i enjoyed it, thought it had a good energy, fishman obviously high energy, as he has been all tour. the jam does remind me of the Broomfield Ghost, in that I was excited to see such a long jam, but underwhelmed when I actually listened to it.
Dirt - not as a huge an energy suckout as I thought, but then again I love, love, love this song. i pretty much always prefer the album version though.
Fluffhead - not the worst fluffhead, not the best, but again good energy, especially in the vocals! they are screaming like its 80's Phish or something. puts a smile on my face.
2001 - personally I don't think Trey stuck the orgasm parts. i take it personally when Trey takes away my ASZ orgasm. so a little frustrating, but the jammy section is 'aight.
Tweezer - the composed section is pretty poor, IMO. some floundering (http://images.starpulse.com/Photos/Previews/animalhouse6.jpg) Trey action going on. but, I do like the jam on this one. nothing earth shattering but I like it.
Show of Life - I think Trey gets a lot more comfortable here. A good song and well played.
YEM - Good YEM, nothing earth shattering but Trey feels more on his game.
I Been Around - dumb song but its fun.
Quinn - good Quinn
Twiprise - finished my run before this wrapped up, I'm sure it rawked though.
in the final summation, its the classic 3.0 review: some good points, some bad points, but it all works out. i am positive i would have been boogieing my ass off had I been there.
compositionally speaking I hear zero improvements from one show to the next. Mango is a disaster and Trey needs stop even bothering with Uncle Pen. on P&M now and I love this song but they are barely making it through. I'm sure it was a blast to be at though..

Upon first listen I enjoyed the atypical nature of it.. LOTS of pitch bending and unusual note selection from Mike and Trey. I like how they slide it back together around the 8:50ish.
IMO, I am just glad to hear them experiment with their sound. +K for :phish:

But trey brought things to this version that I thought went quite well. I dig this 2001.
I really think this show is pretty decent.....i like it better than the other shows this tour at this point...I started it at Sand and have listened to the LP twice and the schoeps once....I think there is some dope shit.....glad I skipped the mango...
Whew.
What a fucking weekend. I know I briefly covered Friday night in the other thread, but I'll post a more detailed review of that show as well. As for night two, I'm still in shock over it. I got no sleep on Friday night, not due to partying, but only having a floor to sleep on, and no covers to keep warm with, so as a result I was kind of lackadaisical until we got the festivities going for the day. McGrupp met me at my room around 4ish, we had a little knob creek, and enjoyed the warmth of a good bourbon. We headed over to the lot around 4ish, and began pregaming with a bunch of my buddies. George preceded to hand me a little gift from the dirty RVA, a 42 ounce PBR tall boy (see pic below). The alcohol gods love me. Rawsome. Great way to start the night. We pregamed until just before seven, and then our group headed into the venue. ACB, thatfar gone, and his lady joined us shortly before we headed into the venue, and we all snagged seats in section 126.
Saturday night had a bigger turn out than Friday. I'm not sure what tickets were going for on the lot, but I saw extra's around. To me, this had a direct impact, the energy was much higher on Saturday night than on Friday night. The band started off solid enough, KDF > Guelah Papyrus. I could of done without another KDF falls opener, but beggers can't be choosers, and it's one of the few gripes I have with this show. The first set really picks up momentum when they drop into the Curtain (with). Now ACB and Grupp were with me for this. All I can really say is, wow. It just filled my heart with such joy. I was taken aback, and in a lot of ways it felt full circle for me. From memory, it was a solid version. I do remember not liking how Trey started so soft with the jam (I prefer it when he comes in with some voracious lick a la Colorado '88). I know seeing this and being around all my friends is going to create a bias I can't overcome, it simply made my night, and my weekend. I knew from then on, I was in for one of the most unique experiences of my life.
We follow the lines going South....
The set continued to escalate and the energy continued to build. One thing that I would love to note, and it's something I haven't seen a lot in 3.0 is the how the band fed off the crowd energy on 10/16. It really birthed new life into them, and I was loving how you could just feel this collective explosion of power throughout the whole show. Even with horrendous flubs like in Mango Song, it didn't deter from the energy of the band. Yes, Mango was butchered, but none the less I enjoyed it. Sand was a monster. I just remember finally thinking, "you know, Sand's actually not bad." Who would of thought it, a 3.0 sand changed my perception of a song I usually go to no ends to hate on. The peak of the jam had the crowd just in a furry, and again, I really loved seeing this sort of interaction from the band and the crowd. It's something that has been missing from a lot of these 3.0 shows.
Limb was solid. Well placed. I really liked the placement of Sneaking Sally as well, and the vocal jam with it was a nice treat. Uncle Pen was kind of sloppy, but I dug the variety and the choice to slot it where they did. Pebbles and Marbles also had a little slop, but I'll take it. I love seeing this song live, CK5 always has some interesting lights for it. Cavern was well played, and the crowd was loving it, and finally the set closed with a good David Bowie.
The end of set one had a buzz about it, where I think we just knew it was going to get even better for set II. Set II delivered in my opinion. The Cross Eyed Opener was hot, and I really liked the way Trey led this version. It ripped a hole in the crowd, and the energy went through the roof. I turned to George, and asked him, "where the fuck has this band been?" It became my focus of thought for the night. I'm not saying the playing was monumentally better than any other 3.0 show, but the energy was so different. Phish found their ability to finally communicate with the crowd again, and command attention from the crowd. There were no people standing around talking when it got quite, it was complete focus on the band for the entire second set.
I really liked the placement of Dirt in slot II, second set. To me, the lyrics "still waiting" paired with an existential song have very profound meaning, it was as if the band was telling us that we must live in the moment, so that when we finally do reflect on our lives, we have no disappointments. I thought Dirt was very well played. The Fluffhead was well received and well played as well.
While the 2001 was short, it kept the momentum going in my opinion. I enjoyed it despite some flubs from the band. The tweezer was very psychedelic to me. It went to a weird place and then settled into a major key jam before fizzling out to segue into Show of Life.
I like Show of Life a lot, and I liked the placement here a lot. This is a Dead like tune to me. The lyrics while mildly cheesy are also a little profound to me. I also thought that the show would close with this tune, which at the time I considered to be a very ballsy move by the band. Alas I was wrong.
YEM was fantastic. A few flubs in the composition, and a great jam and an outstanding vocal jam. I think I been around is a decent song, and I liked the placement in the encore. Quinn got the place rocking, and Tweezprise was an orgasm as always. We walked out of the show floored and ready to straight rage. A few post show beers at my buddies car, and then that's when the night gets nuts for me.
So I'd like to preface, that I had an epic prank set up for McGrupp but it never materialized. I kept telling him all night that I had a bag of blow for him and he needed to come by and do it. I built it up, and up. In reality it was a bag of powdered coffee cream and sugar. The goal of course was to get Grupp to rail a huge line of sugar. Like I said, it never happened. Grupp ended up going poon hunting I think. We raged the hotel all night. One of the guys that was in my room plays piano, so we spent most of the night in the hotel lobby listening to him play and partying. The security guard was ultra chill about it. At one point we had about 50 people gathered around all drinking, smoking, and singing as loud as possible. It was a straight rage fest.
This went on from maybe 2am-3:30am. I felt Hungry, so my buddy and I trekked it over to the waffle house. So as we walk into the waffle house, I see this dude in this elaborate outfit that looked like psychedelic puke meets Aladdin. He also had glitter all over his face. He asks me about an after party, and in my typical fashion, I tell him I know about a fucking awesome after party, and tell him about our hotel lobby.
The guy straight snaps on me. He starts going off about how he's so sick and tired of people saying they know shit when they don't. My buddy and I get an earful from this dude for like 5 minutes. Finally he realizes that he just made a huge ass of himself, and instead of apologizing, he sits down and starts to proceed to bitch about the Phish show too. Needless to say, it was the last thing I wanted to see or hear at 4:30 in the morning with a head full of acid.
He left, and we straight grubbed down. Walked back to the hotel, and I find everyone else in my room passed out. I stayed up chilling and got to watch the sunrise. I met up with my ride the next morning, and we hit downtown Chuck for food and to do a few tourist things. Raged some Bloody Mary's at the Noisy Oyster. Then we hit the road to get back to Atlanta. We caught horrendous traffic on the way home. I-26 was pretty grid locked for 20 something miles. I finally got some sleep last night.
All in all. Awesome time. I loved the run, and it's my favorite experience so far since they came back. Bring on NYE @ the Garden!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whew.
One thing that I would love to note, and it's something I haven't seen a lot in 3.0 is the how the band fed off the crowd energy on 10/16. It really birthed new life into them, and I was loving how you could just feel this collective explosion of power throughout the whole show
This is what made the Greek shows so good for me. The crowd is just on top of the band in that place and the energy was insane for 3 perfect nights!
Nice review Soph, glad you had a good time and the boys actually impressed ya.

And that's how to do a two night stand.
Finished listening last night.
Curtain and Cross definitely are my favorite songs from the show.
Didn't like tweezer all that much either, Mango was pretty :samurai: but I really like Mango so I wish they would just shelve it until Trey can execute.
Edit: Wish I could have made it to this show, probably my favorite from this fall tour. Still searching for that 3.0 smokin' 2001, hopefully MSG can deliver :|
well I must say that I was blown away by this show, had been wanting a guelah for a while and got it, absolutely loved curtain (especially with), sooo much better than the miami curtain with
mango was pretty rocky but sand made me forget about that and limb by limb was very solid imo
C&P was nuts, glad to see them at least try to play out 2001 a little bit, tweezer could have been good but definitely fell short
good YEM, and really enjoyed the encore, quinn is a treat and tweeprise is always a fun way to leave a show
overall this is definitely the best 3.0 show I've been to, and no I didn't say that about every show
and now to listen to it again!

welcome to sc. why do you think i go to school here? :-D
oh man!!! This Curtain With!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its not peaking hard, but holy shit, Trey is playing some fucking GORGEOUS lines, and actually getting MELODIC with new thinking... this is glorious to see. The licks he played to start off the jam show it all.... and OH MAN PAGE!!!! HIS PIANO ASCENDING AND DESCENDING LICKS!!!!!!!! at about 11:50. Holy shit.
I dont care, this is the best they've played in a Curtain With yet 3.0. Not peaking hard, but just glorious melodic celebration.

ill relisten, but nothing Ive heard in Curtain With's yet come close to the creativity Trey let loose in there........
or maybe its that I haven't listened to Phish whatsoever since like, August. Seriously. I stopped, except for at work. Otherwise, its been all death metal, since I'm writing for the next Angeldeath record. heh
but that doesn't mean I forget Phish...... i just think i have a clearer perspective on it. I've even been going back to shows from last year, and finding hot and creative shit all over the place, like the RR Disease and Hood, and some other shit. AND THE CAMDEN TWEEZAR!!!
Mango wasn't THAT bad, except for the one part Trey lost the chords. The vocal flubs were actually kind of cool, because it created a really unique Mike/SOTG-esque vibe between him and Page, with the timing of words all slapping back and forth.
Into Sand now.... nice jamming, Page on the piano is way cool. Trey wants it to ascend real bad around 7 mins in...
YES!!!! PEBBLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this shit is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh fuck you Trey you can peak that shit longer. That got berserk REAL quick.
Phish will not really be back until we get a 14+ minute Pebbles and Marbles again and a jammed Waves.
oh man this Crosseyed is juicy delicious at the start of the jam.... oh man. Thank you Phish. I needed this.

it's not just the start of the jam, it stays hot throughout
Sand! If we had a banana that danced a little more funky, that would be the one I would place here. Mike es en fuego!
I've not gone back and listened to the tapes yet so here are just some recollections.
KDF was a strong opener, nothing epic but it's a fun rocker and got the crowd reasonably excited.
Guelah, Curtain, Mango, Sand... all extremely solid calls that had everyone tickled pink. Sand got pretty filthy there. After all this, Limb felt almost like a breather even though it's a strong enough ditty in its own right. Plus, it's one of the wife's favorites, so I was glad she got to hear one.
Sneaking Sally, always fun, especially with the vocal jam. Uncle Pen, fun I guess though I think this was giving Trey some problems. Nice to hear a P&M.
Cavern. I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this, but outside the venue the PA had this announcement on a loop, you know the standard welcome/fan info stuff ("... have your ticket ready prior to entering... all bags are subject to inspection..." etc.) ... and then the announcement ended with "... and remember, whatever you do, take care of your shoes." So naturally, when this line drew a great roar of a cheer from the crowd, I couldn't help but wonder how many were also reacting to the PA announcement they might've heard earlier. Cavern's ending kind of melted into a brief ambient/3.0-ish soundscape from which emerged what I remember being a solid, if routine, Bowie.
All in all I was extremely pleased with the set. Myself and most of my crew, it seemed, felt this show had already eclipsed Friday night by this point.
Crosseyed to open set II -- another great call by the band, another jolt of pure energy for and from the crowd. I really need to listen to this again to get refreshed on how the jamming was, but it seemed more than suitable at the time. They returned to the "still waiting" refrain a couple times, it seemed, though without signaling the end of the jam as you might have expected.
The way the show had been going, I thought they might follow C&P up with something a little wilder than Dirt. So I was a little puzzled at the placement here at the time. But once I got past that I enjoyed the song, as I usually do.
Fluffhead. This'll never get a complaint out of me. Nor the wife. Built up to a great cathartic peak, everyone was loving it.
Now, 2001, I figured they'd probably pull this out at some point during the weekend. Some of you may know this but 2001 is kind of the "theme song" for the University of South Carolina sports program. I wouldn't know whether this is even on the band's radar or not, but then again check out this official t-shirt design (http://s3.amazonaws.com/twitpic/photos/large/178261832.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=0ZRYP5X5F6FSMBCCSE82&Expires=1287499300&Signature=mgxPOPAQIryfi2P7A%2BBAsSAMUtk%3D). Plus USC had just beat Bama the week before, biggest win in school history, Palmetto State crowd in the house, lotsa Gamecock fans, blah blah. Only problem was, by the time they played 2001, South Carolina had just lost to Kentucky in spectacularly boneheaded fashion, and despite spotty phone service inside the arena, we knew it by this time and I believe lots of other people did too. So I guess my point is, 2001 on Saturday night brought some unfortunate baggage with it. Now, this might have all meant completely nothing, but when you're all  it's the kind of shit you think about. Or at least I do.
We had a hunch about Tweezer and whaddyaknow. Not a transcendent version but it was pretty boogietastic and the jam got to an interesting major-key spot before winding down into Show of Life, a tune I can't quite decide whether I like or not. Given that uncertainty, I could have done with a different selection. But, as with Dirt, I think I decided not to worry about the armchair quarterbacking and just enjoy it. And Trey's guitar crescendo at the end did the job.
While SoL feels like a natural closer, we knew all weekend we'd be in for a YEM. And, not unsurprisingly, they pulled it out here to close the set. Great nirvana sequence, great little jam (did it peak much? I'll have to go listen again) and what sure felt like a much extended bass and drums section where Mike tried to recapture some of the creativity of B&Ds past that seems to have mostly eluded the section since it returned full time around, what, '03? The vocal jam was pretty wild. Not your garden-variety howling and rising/falling moans, this one had some intent behind it. Honestly, I didn't catch the Guy Forget lyrics; I think I was too busy trying to figure out if the voices I was hearing beside and around me were simply from the audience or some kind of freaky surround-sound trick the band and my head were conspiring to play on me. After this concluded the crowd treated the band to a raucous ovation that they were obliged to soak in for a while.
Encore. I regard I Been Around as mostly a throwaway song, which is a bit of a shame, because what little of it they did decide to develop, I like. But I thought it was appropriate after the show they'd just given us. "The town threw down," indeed. Quinn the Eskimo had everyone grooving in mighty high spirits, and Tweeprise gave us one final adrenaline shot to send us into the night.
I agree with those who say Saturday was a much stronger show than Friday, much higher in energy and in terms of how locked-in both the band and audience felt. But I'd also say my gut tells me this could be a classic case of the tapes doing extremely little justice to the in-show experience. Maybe I'm just hedging here; I'll find out soon enough.
After the show we went back to our room at the Embassy Suites (right smack next door, as good a setup as you could ask for) and some in the crew were talking about going to a bar on James Island. This sounded like an extremely daunting and unlikely effort, so we settled on going back downstairs to wander around the lot. Did that, watched some fireworks go off, checked out the bleary-eyed heads wandering around, chuckled at the cops on motorcycles and on foot trying to disperse the crowd. Kinda makes you wonder if they realize how fucked up many people are and if they have any problem with hurrying them into their cars and onto the roads.
All in all a great weekend in Charleston. We even followed it up on Sunday with a visit to see some friends at a beach house on Isle of Palms. Hung out there for several hours drinking beers and playing games on the beach -- interestingly it felt like a bit of a postscript but only because of the magnitude of the preceding two days. Nothing trumps Phish, you know.

the band probably knows about it; they played it in charlotte this summer the day after the usc baseball team won the national championship. still sick, and always cool to get a s.c. shoutout (despite that infuriating loss to kentucky)

I have a feeling this kind of playing and the energy will continue if not grow throughout this fall tour. The boys are back!
I'm on my second listen here and the 1st set rips with the exception of Mango, Trey should be able to nail that. Guelah may be in a tie w Stash for my favorite Phish tune so I love it when it gets played. Curtain With would have been so beautiful to have witnessed, love it whenever this makes the list for the night.
The Second set continues this trend and even steps it up a notch with C&P, this will definitely get repeat play for me, loved it. Fluffhead was decent but then the monster 2001, once again, will be getting repeat play from me. Everything til Tweezer was great but I found this version semi-painful to listen to. The off notes did not go with what the other 3 were playing. Show of Life actually redeems them a bit I found and YEM, nice treat with the GF lyrics, like the playfulness. Not much of a fan of IBA but not a hater either. Quinn possibly my favorite Dylan tune, always love it and of course, Tweeprise is a rager to finish.
I will say I find Page playing great and may even top Mike for MVP so far this tour from what I've listened to.
page killed charleston. after his pops came out he was just happy. lots of standing page the whole weekend. you know he is on when the stool gets little action.
This show is pretty tame on tape. :tte:
Never really liked Mango until I heard this tonight. Not saying it's a definitive version or anything (I wouldn't know what one was since I usually skipped over it) but this just hit me the right way tonight. Very joyous. Makes me happy. PAGE! :music:
I think this is my favorite show that I attended this fall.
The "Curtain>Mango, Sand, Limb by Limb, Sneakin Sally" sequence was pretty epic for me, as I had been been hoping to hear the first four of those songs for weeks. The Mango, as noted above, had it's problems, which sucks, because it was so cool coming out of the Curtain. Trey just couldn't get that little melodic riff down. Sometimes I think he needs to practice more. Still though, This whole sequence was really fun. I was surprised at the closer too. I thought they would break after Cavern for sure. And then a nice chunky Bowie...
I thought the Crosseyed was a cool. Nice long jam. It seemed like it needed a little direction at points, but it did end up in some really nice places. You gotta take chances, right? I actually liked the Dirt, although I agree it was sort of a strange placement. I can't lie, I am over Fluffhead [ducks]. I just don't really like dancing to it and most of the versions I have seen with 3.0 are botched by Trey at some point. This one was actually pretty clean but alas...I really enjoyed the 2001, the Tweezer, the YEM, and the Quinn encore too. Perhaps standard-ish versions but all well performed and with great energy.
The weather was awesome this weekend. We camped on James Island and I was thrilled to wake up and put on flip flops. Charleston is a really cool town, too. Lot's of history and old, old buildings.
This C&P is legit! I have really enjoyed hearing this show, but definitely this C&P. Around 6:30 it really starts to get revved up! :rockout:

This show came up the other day when I had my iPod on "shuffle albums." Some definite slop, but some serious moments of win going on as well (the C&P is the best example but the Antelope is no slouch either).
