The real opening day is one of my favorite days of the year.
Any other AL East teams need their home opener spoiled?
75% sure I saw mattstick on his way to the Blue Jays home opener as I was driving back to my hotel.
Wish I had known that was happening tonight, took me an hr to move 6 km into downtown. :frustrated:
Probably would have bought tickets too.
Jays home opener is for n00bs, I'm going later in the week when they don't have a 30-minute pregame ceremony and there are 30,000 fewer people.
Finally caught my first game of the season today.. Astro's vs A's. While I'm not a major fan of either (Go Rangers) my dad is a huge A's fan and I live in Houston now so it was still a lot of fun. Weather was perfect and there were $1 hotdogs all game! Baseball is here!!
I was treated by one of my vendors to great tickets behind the visitor's dugout at Fenway tonight. We were treated to a thrilling walkoff victory by the Sox. It was so rejuvenating to be back in the stadium after this winter.
God I love baseball.
I'll get my comment in while I can, Mets look damn good so far.
with Harvey, de Grom and Colon as a great top 3 and Niese and Gee can be at least .500 pitchers or better. this team can make some noise this year.
9 straight!

Jays Take Out The Trash 13-6: Game Fourteen Thoughts
QuoteDid someone say something about trash birds?
The shitheel Baltimore Orioles, a living, breathing, 25-man avatar for the pile of human garbage posing as their manager, Buck Showalter, got their shit-brains knocked out, metaphorically, by the Toronto Blue Jays tonight, and so like so many petty losers before them, decided to try and actually get physical with the Jays.
In another slice of baseball's ongoing real-funny-until-someone-gets-his-brain-scrambled-or-worse stupidity with players whipping balls dangerously close to one another, Rule 5 pitcher Jason Garcia, playing the part of overzealous goon trying to impress the coaches at a hockey training camp, did what he surely thought Showalter would have wanted and threw behind Jose Bautista's back after allowing a Josh Donaldson double to start the bottom of the seventh of a game that was, at that point, 11-4.
Dumb.
And dumber still because Jose is fucking awesome. A couple pitches later and he homered — just like he did when shitbag Oriole Darren O'Day threw behind him last week — and pimped the home run like a man who had just almost been intentionally maimed while playing a damn game of baseball should. He admired his shot, flipped his bat, shouted at second baseman Ryan Flaherty, glared at the dung piles in the Orioles dugout, then celebrated with his teammates like the ball he knocked out of the yard (again) had been hit directly into the souls of the cheapjack little shits who threw at him for no good goddamned reason.
Then, when Jose took the field for the eighth, Showalter, dipshit Adam Jones, and others didn't seem to think he had been respectful enough by not sombrely circling the bases and declining to brush off the fact that the fuckhead Orioles were back in the business of throwing at players who were getting the best of them, like a bunch of little shithead Machado-inspired children. Wahhh, fuckfaces.
Then, because he is a fucking boss and not intimidated by the horseshitting Baltimores or their manager's sad old man thuggery, when Delmon Young stung one to right field, Jose charged it, trying to throw Young out at first — and nearly did so, much to the chagrin of the idiot Orioles and their idiot announcers, who apparently felt he was hot dogging out there, and were more concerned about this than pointing out the crass and ugly stupidity of their team in trying to maim this guy yet again.
Dumb as fuck.
Don't throw at people intentionally. Ever. But here's a pro tip, Orioles: maybe especially don't throw at Jose.

I totally agree with this post. Fuck Buck and his band of tools. At the game I went to last Friday, Jimenez threw at Sandoval's head because he slid hard (and totally legally) into 2nd base earlier in the game. No excuse for ever throwing at a guy's head.
I don't know if I agree with the line not to throw at anyone intentionally ever. I agree with not throwing at anyone's head.
Baseball has always had the unwritten rule to settle the score on the field.
Harvey threw at Utley a week or two ago and hit him in the back. This was after Philly hit 2 Mets, knocking their cleanup hitter out of the game. Utley took it like a man and went to 1st base and his post game comments were that he'd been hit before. it was no big deal. there was no carryover the next game.
I don't think it should carry over as much as some of these divas do nowadays but some games it is handled like professionals and is part of baseball.

Beaning someone is not covered by those unwritten rules, and that is what I was referring to. If you're going to throw at a guy, there is a lot of area to hit that does not involve potentially creating permanent brain impairment. Anything chest or above is egregious.
Since Buck is so fucking keen on having his guys throw at opponents, at least have the fucking decency to instruct them to do it the right way. He's a fucking douche.

I'm just catching up on all of this. Pcr, you're crazy if you think that was intentional. He had a no hitter going. Ubaldo is historically wild. Matt, I'm not even going to address that nonsense. Your blue jays have quickly replaced the Yankees as my most hated team in MLB. As for throwing at someone intentionally, I agree that it has its place. But IMO it's gotten a little out of hand and I don't think you should ever throw at someone's head.
Also, I don't get the hate for Buck at all.
Oy, that blog post was tough to read. It was like a YouTube commenter trying to do his best Matt Taibbi impression.
Shocked that O's fans can't see how pissy their club looks from the outside. It's also from a guy who used to write a blog called "Drunk Jays Fans" and it's supposed to be inflammatory and red meat for the Jays fanbase.
Also, lolz at the idea that the Jays are more hated than the Yankees...
Last time I checked, a no-hitter is still intact when you hit a batter. It was clearly intentional, and, if you can't see that, I don't know what to tell you.

True, but there's always the risk of getting tossed like he was. I just don't see how it was intentional.
I haven't seen any of the games in question Matt, so I can't comment on them.

Quote
Philadelphia Phillies dismiss GM Ruben Amaro Jr.
The Philadelphia Phillies have dismissed general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., effective immediately, president-in-waiting Andy MacPhail announced Thursday.
"It's never an easy decision to make a change," MacPhail said in a statement. "Ruben has had a direct impact on some of the best years in the team's history. He helped to create some great memories for Phillies fans with his accomplishments, but in order to return to a top-contending club, we believe this is the right thing to do as we continue the rebuilding process."
Assistant general manager Scott Proefrock has been given the interim title while the team begins a search for a replacement.
The Phillies (54-86) have the worst record in the majors at 54-86 and will miss the postseason for the fourth straight year after winning five consecutive NL East titles. Amaro replaced Pat Gillick, who retired after the Phillies won the 2008 World Series and took over as team president last year. Amaro previously served 10 years as assistant GM.
Amaro has engineered several trades during Philadelphia's rebuilding process, including dealing ace Cole Hamels to Texas and 2007 NL MVP Jimmy Rollins and six-time All-Star Chase Utley to the Dodgers.
Amaro wasn't afraid of making big moves during his tenure. He acquired Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence in trades. He also traded Lee and signed him a year later in free agency.
Amaro, 50, rose from team batboy in 1980-83 to playing for the Phillies for five seasons in the 1990s. He guided the Phillies to the 2009 National League pennant and division titles and three division titles.
"The Phillies ownership fully supports Andy's decision not to extend Ruben Amaro's contract," co-owner John Middleton said in a statement. "As a group, we have tremendous respect for Ruben, who has been a significant contributor to this organization. This decision is about taking the club in a new direction, and that will be facilitated by new leadership."
Manager Ryne Sandberg resigned in June. MacPhail was hired a week later to replace Gillick as president after the season.

What a performance by Arrieta last night. With all of the Red Sox connections combined with over a century of fan frustration, I think I'm rooting for the Cubs this year.
We'll SEE YA Pittsburgh!
I really hope this is the Cubbies' year.
Oh, and Sean Gonzalez is a douche. Didn't he break his hand by acting like an idiot and punching shit before?

Jays/Mets WS
Mets in 4
Lulz.
Utley clearly made a play on Tejeda's body - he wasn't even close to the bag. To say it was a "late" slide is an understatement.
He should have been called out.
It won't change anything but he should be suspended.
Utley should have been automatically out and it should have been a double play.
Odor was off the bag too.
Replay requires more accountability, not just a shoulder shrug leaving the teams/players/fans/media to interpret which rule they're upholding.
Garbage move.
I wish Game 3 was tonight with Harvey on the mound.
The remainder of this series is gonna get ugly.
Mets are totally fired up.
Don't know how many Cubs fans are here, but tying the series with Arrieta going on Monday in Wrigley. Going to be a great game.
Takeout slides are never an issue as long as someone doesn't get hurt. And that's not exclusively within the runner's control. Frankly I'm kind of surprised they're allowed at all.

Fuck yeah!
Utley was suspended, Torre said it should have been called a DP.
Utley appealed, MLB wanted and expedited appeal, but Utley's representatives and MLPA "need time" for preparations, which means he can play.
So the suspension is meaningless
http://m.mlb.com/news/article/154136656/chase-utley-appeal-unlikely-to-be-heard-monday
Definitely shitty that he gets to play tonight.
Hopefully the Mets hurt LA with 2 wins.
We all know Harvey is a hothead, be he just needs to pitch strong tonight and the team will follow.
Maybe Harvey, Wright or Familia bump into Chase at a bar or something after the season is over.
It's gonna hurt him a lot more taking those hits with rings on...;)
Hey, do you guys remember when Matt Holiday was suspended after "tackling" Marco Scutaro in the 2012 NLCS? Nah, neither do I.
(full clip here (http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/39049312/v25415817))
https://youtu.be/eEpgQ5_eLAo
The Giant players were understandably just as furious as the Mets.
https://youtu.be/LCxh1Zp3M8w
that's going to be Utley's major defense.
The difference is, Tejeda was taken off the field in a stretcher, Scutaro finished the game.
good article from the SF chronicle here
http://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/article/Why-wasn-t-baseball-this-indignant-when-6566496.php
unfortunately, it takes MLB years and several injuries before making rule changes - I still have distinct memories of Pete Rose taking out Ray Fosse (and dislocating his shoulder) in the (meaningless) 1970 All Star game years before baseball change the rules to protect catchers.
http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/pete-rose-ray-fosse-and-the-jarring-end-for-the-1970-all-star-game-071215
(I must admit, at the time I thought it was a great play.)
Regardless, I'm sure that the umps will be strict about calls at 2nd base tonight, especially when Utley is on the receiving end.
If the score gets lopsided either way, watch out.
of course, the best retribution is the Mets winning this thing
Umps make a correct call on a run scoring play in the 7th. Toronto fans throw beer cans on the field. First time watching baseball?
You stay classy, Toronto!
As the announcers stated: Embarrassing
ETA: player just ejected from Blue Jays dugout! LOL
Just came here to say the same thing.
Stay classy Toronto.
I'll tell ya, that would be a serious day killer to get hit with a beer chucked from the upper deck.
Looked like a mother holding her baby just bawling.
Sad seeing the disgrace to the game of baseball that is Toronto fans.
Texas definitely shot themselves in the foot (not to take anything away from Toronto's playing)
Go Cubs!
Pretty sure Toronto fans aren't the first sports fans to chuck shit on the field.
A few boneheads out of 50,000 people shouldn't count for the whole lot.
That being said, what a fucking game that was.
Bautista FTW.

I don't agree it would've happened at any stadium, because it hasn't. It could've just as easy though. But I agree that a handful of morons shouldn't represent an entire fanbase. I should have worded my previous post different.
That said, I've always liked the Jays. Congrats Matt. I share your feeling of excitement as I've been a Cubs fan ever since I can remember.
Anyway, it was behind cringeworthy watching Texas shoot themselves in the foot (for the 1,000th time in the last few years). Growing up so close to Arlington, I couldn't help but like Rangers baseball. I think I would rather the Cubs play Toronto than Texas though if it comes to that.

Pretty cool you got to witness that game in the stadium.
Must have been wild.

Texas had the chance, and couldn't do it. Either way, Mets vs Dodger tonight, should be a good one. I enjoy that they are using there aces up Make's it a little easier for the Cubs to not have to face them till maybe the 3rd game in.

Got a lot of shit wearing cubs stuff at the bar yesterday. Got screamed at by a couple Met's fans. So sure enough, grabbing a dirnk to watch the game will not be happening the rest of the series.
Either way Harvey was incredible.
I don't know that I've ever seen someone get to 1st base safely after striking out. I certainly haven't seen a run score on a K.
Too bad Flores' shot didn't a a little less juice behind it so it would have stayed in play

I really do believe that the Cubs are cursed. How does that happen, just buried my head into my hands, and realized this series is over.
Also, 6 straight is Murphy something. He is going to get paid big time by somebody.
hopefully the Mets will be able to keep him.
If I was manager of KC or Toronto, I wouldn't let him swing the bat. Just walk him
Hopefully Cespedes will heal up
  Congrats Mets.
aren't you a Ranger fan?
Rangers and Cubs is an odd combination.

Cubs will be monster next year. They need one more ace and they will be back in post season.

Mets kinda steamrolled right over the Cubs.
4 times.

"I thought it was the ball." Yeah, roid monkey, sure. When in your fucking life have you fielded a ball and thrown it directly at the baserunner coming out of the box?
I fucking hate that man with the fire of infinity suns.

Yeah, it is a weird combo, but was never attracted to NY Baseball, outside of the late 90's Yankee team. Because well at eight years old that was my earliest sports memory. Even living here i am not that into it.

Mets made the Cubs look like they were far from a 97 win team.
But there is a lot to look forward to on that Cubs team that i am very excited for.
What a finish. Sucks that someone's season ends on a terrible call, but come on, everyone knows Revere wasn't gonna get a hit anyway.
The Home Run call was bullshit, the strikes to Revere were bullshit.
But JD was 0 for 5.
The Jays were 0 for 13 with RISP.
Sucks, but we deserved to lose.
Ump wanted to go home...
tough way to lose
(I know, it's always tough)

THAT was a tough way to lose.
Blowing 2 leads in the 9th and 1 in the 8th.
:frustrated:
Congrats to the Royals - they deserved it
Mets played sloppy ball the entire Series.
Royals wanted it more and they capitalized on every Mets mistake.
Royals needed 3 brutal calls by umpires to beat the Jays in 6 games.
Mets position players are nowhere near WS-calibre.
The advanced scouting by the Royals was really impressive, allowing them to really expose the weaknesses of their opponents.
Let the hot stove season begin.

that and they got no production from 3-4-5
Congrats KC!
I just didn't want the Mets to win. KC deserved it though. What a great, deep team.

So salty....Mets got outplayed, that's for sure. Some really bad errors and 3 blown saves. Ugh. The Royals played better, they're a great team, but just seem so cocky. I would have been way happier to see Toronto win.
