Got back home in the middle of Seven Below and was -ing for most of the rest of the time. Look forward to hearing the first set, it looks like a fun one if not totally jamtacular.
I'm just hoping that with what everyone is saying happened and based on what I've heard from the previous shows that they keep this momentum going for the last 5 shows of the tour and bring it all home for NYE.
Man, I'm gonna have to stay up to give a listen to the second set.
first show i stayed tuned for more than a song or two this tour. hope it delivers on official listen.
take care ya'll g-nite. gotta get up at six for work.

You know, that is EXACTLY what should have (and I think DID) happened. I think it's pretty obvious that the crowd must have been rowdy from the truly great jams, as the band was DEFINITELY feeding off the crowd. 3.0 has reached another level.

It was bangin...
show of the year.
7 > ghost was at least half an hour.... without a doubt. peaked.... 3 or 4 times. pure improv. Shine jam in ghost, slay'd and face'd.
not joking.
everything.... peak. i can't believe that all happened. You could see their elation as they collectively realized how to turn the faucet knob again. it was control. EVERYTHING. dood, think about the kind of playing it would take to make JULIUS an appropriate SET TWO closer. fucking right.
called the YEM encore. no doubt.
I'm actually injured. Twice I fell over the chairs jumping up and down and screaming, probably both during Ghost. my legs are all cut up from it. and i'm most certainly not drunk. so... don't bother.
i'm almost debating whether I should A) never shower again, so that I can keep the physical manifestation of that hose-age on my physical body forever, or B) grabbing a knife or something and like, scraping the chum off of myself and then sell it on ebay as hard-earned sweat and gunk from the 2nd Albany show. not sure. yet.
wheres the petition to get the sound man to turn the fuckinG TREBLE FUCKING DOWN??!???
i swore they were gonna take a bow after Ghost...... cuz that place was screaming so hardd for like 2 minutes straight.....
Phish woke up. They get it now. Back to Fall/Dec '99 fellas....... mmmmmmmmmmmMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
its on now. They're not fucking kidding.

show of the year. without a doubt. even Let Me Lie is USELESS against this show. Perfect. everything was perfect. They figured it out again. Pending re-listen, these top Camden Sand/Tweezer........
man, i don't want to be a downer, but I seriously feel horrible about those who didn't get to be there. i know how much Phish means to all of you, and like.... man, fucking christ. I hate that all of us weren't able to be there and witness.... that. like, its actually depressing me lol.
This will be talked about. For a while.........
Listen for the Shine jam, and the TWO legit 2001 teases.... Mike wanted it, so badly. they fooled us all, twice. But Trey's all like "know what, shut the fuck up and drink this hose damnit"

The -7 is ser and the Ghost is playing out well so far
the seven below was great upon relisten and this ghost is shaping up nicely
just one thing....that's all I want. I love ghost, it's a great song. To hear them playing it like this again is really nice
but for once, let's nail that build up huh? Not that it was flubbed, but they used to just thunder into each other from there and explode....sorry

around 16 mins there is some distinctive birds jamming, so smooth throughout this pairing :rockout:
This Seven Below is impressive on all fronts!! The few whale calls Trey spots out are overridden by some serious work from Mike.
Best 3.0 Jams!!!
so, so, seven below...
i gotta give it to them (trey) for goin for it. to my ears, i still hear some hesitation to start, maybe a few times i think trey sounds like he doesnt know exactly what to play, but wants to play something. he has had his go-to tricks and licks for these moments throughout 3.0. (really, trey always has had tricks and licks up his sleeve for these moments, they just seem more prevalent as of late and theyre all fairly distinctive [the tricks / effects especially]).
i hear pretty much the entire tool box through the first half or so of this jam, but more often than other times of late, they actually get us somewhere. a few may fizzle but (mostly) mike quickly leads the charge to new ground. it does have its high points, and even when trey sounds a little lost, mike just blows minds. the soaring moments definitely soar; nothing here to make you clinch your teeth, its the kinda stuff that makes you lift your head and smile at the sky. the meandering at the beginning pays off in the end.
if we havent truly had an a+ this year, this is a solid b+/a-. im not ready to invoke dec. 99 or anything, but i would have been very happy to have been there tonight to at least see the chances being taken.
i think fish definitey wanted to play 2001 and wonder if the set wasnt written or planned to have 2001 follow seven below.
ghost.... however...
well, first let me say that i still think that the ghosts are way sloppy in 2009. but lets get past the song, because the jam is what we're all here for tonight. the jam out of ghost starts strong, right back into a seven below section. but, it seems to have a mission. trey plays rhythmicly through most of the first 10 minutes (most of my favorite jams have come out of trey playing rhythm to get into the groove). no real shred here, but none of the "im lost, let me hit these 8 pedals and send this to space and do some whale calls and then we'll try that pong loop from hartford with the wammy / wahs..."
he does kind of sends us to space for a couple minutes (12ish) but mike starts in with the funk sounds and leads the jam out of trey's space. trey goes back to rhythm and then noodles a little for the funky bit. they dip a little mellow and noodly at 15:30ish and as this disintegrates, fish decides its time for a little rage and leads the jam into a more scorching pace (16:30ish) where trey finally finds a little room to solo, leading to a nice full band rage-a-thon. trey keeps going, dares mike to follow him and mike steps right up to the challenge for a strong, nearly tense, finish before we're let down pretty smoothly and the crowd erupts.
if we havent truly had an a+ this year, maybe we just did.
:phish:
Couldn't have said it better Allen. +K
Hopefully a harbinger of things to come.....and not an anomaly. :phish:

Yeah this -7>ghost is easily some of the best improv i've heard from this band since their return. Very nice!

You know why, right?
12/12/97 = birth of BOAF. haha say that out-loud... lol "birth of boaf...." hahaha
anyway.... -7 could have peaked even harder around 19:45 or so....when Trey starts speed-picking this one note, but then stops.... the rest of the band wasn't picking up behind him tho so i guess its okay.
I wonder if they decided to burn before the 2nd set... -7 is a bit rusty, but da jamzzzing is THERE. Trey discovered his trill again. This may be the earliest peaking Ghost... as Trey starts a trill around 9:40 or so. not really a peak, but clear indication of "Okay, watch this...."
WHO ELSE HEARS THE SHINE JAM IN 7 BELOW?!??
OHHHHHHHHHH PAAAAAAGE!!!!!!!! your ORGANNNN!!!!!!!!!!!
d0oDzzZZZ!!!! PAy-jorgan shiftz at 11:08!!!!!!! and 11:3))!!!!!!!! oh man...... 11:30-12:XX--->> is fucking PAGEEEHEEET.
they had a really cool key shift right there too at 12 mins but Trey lost the beat or something.... cuz it gets weird for a sec... I DISTINCTLY remember this, if its the part i'm remember, because it was all way weird for a sec, and then like, I turned to my friend Bob or soemthing, and then when I turned back to the stage, I got slapped in the face with a hose.
Relistening to this today, can't wait. Listened to the whole show last night before I finally let myself sleep. Wow, -7 was hot hot hot, but that Ghost...   :samurai:
:phish:
best show since 04, so far in my opinion, everything flows very well.
obviously the -7 > ghost , is really nice stuff.
i think backstage the boys just came together and said, "We are on fall tour, we are back, let's do this....let's do what we know how to do!" -
Haha nice gumbo.
Pay-jorgan.
Nice.
could Mike possibly kill Wolfman's jams any harder than he does? they've been just about my favorite thing to hear in 2009 even though they're only a few minutes at a time.
eta: and I don't even like Wolfman's Brother!
They had one more peak going at 20:30 in Ghost, but Trey dropped off.... he was climbing.... but then stopped.
You know, its so weird..... because listening back, despite how fucking absolutely retarded these jams were, there is CLEAR evidence, to me at least, where they could have hit it even HARDER and peaked even higher, numerous times.
This jamming is weird though, because its like the crazy deep exploration of Fall/Dec '99 mixed with the "we're gonna go wherever this bouncy ball decides to take us"-ness of like, 94/95 Tweez-age.
I dig your reviews and thoughts Gumbo... you say the shit that alot of us might be thinking but are too lazy to type. Props yo.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that they just made tonight's show probably the most important show in Phishtory........
simply because of the fact that it now all rests on tonight; whether they prove that they, indeed, have located their faucet and have grasped the concept of its use in conjunction with a lengthy, flexible liquid conduit........
so, it all rests on tonight. Live or die. The choice is yours...

I still don't think they will lay out lengthy jams at every show... I believe the long jams will be something to be viewed as special from show to show... but solid 12 - 15 minute songs are nothing to squak at... I just hope they jam out some more of their old jam songs like Tube, and Halley's...
AMAZING
this is obviously what we've been waiting for.
not to be a buzzkill, I think it's worth noting that Uncle Pen, and, to a lesser degree Foam, were kinda like this
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/55/The_Beatles_-_Butcher_Cover.jpg)
I'll take this jamming with those issues, any day. Just sayin' - bluegrass is all about precision

Yeah, there are a lot of rough moments in the first set. Foam is pretty much a write off, Trey can't hit anything, skips around hoping to catch up. And I'm not sure what happened in number line but Trey essentially forgot the chords/key, resulting in an ever so slight train wreck if there is such a thing as a slight train wreck. SOAM suffers from the same 3.0 problems that have plagued it since its return. But as Steve said, I will take some flubage in exchange for jamzzzzz.
I havnt listened yet to foam, Sbd that is

relisten to it. it is completely disjointed and Trey keeps falling behind the others, misses notes in the solos, although Page does come in for redemption though. Again another glaring example of just how much more practiced and honed Page is in comparison to Trey.
somebody already mentioned it (and it doesn't really matter) but man the "song" part of Ghost is such a mess..
Bdtnl was far from a train wreck, I did notice the part where Trey basically forgot what to play, and that was bad
But as a whole I thought the jam was pretty rockin

Will do. I don't know the songs in detail musically well enough. My ear doesn't hear missed notes because I subconsciously fill in what's missing I guess. Ya know how when you can't actually here the lyrics but you know them you can fill it in yourself?

slight train wreck. I found a lot of composed parts of songs were poorly executed last night. But last night was all about the jamzzzz. I like the jamzzzz.

15 minute mark of Ghost.....Trey finally starts conversing with IT.....
THIS is what I've been waiting for.
Welcome back boys, welcome back
:phish:
this section then moves around 17min or so into a serious :samurai: fest that goes till about the 20:30 mark before (as gumbo pointed out) Trey pulls it back a bit and takes it to the dreamy end... NASTY jamming.
this show and jams like the Gorge Gin, Sally, R&R and the Camden Sand all have me hopeful for what's to come... can't wait for MIAMI!

But as a whole I thought the jam was pretty rockin
I hereby endorse this post.

Straight up, it's why I like Phish and own over 2 terabytes of their music. And it is also why I have been feeling  lately, with what seemed like an abandonment of experimentation by a band that once prided itself on the creativity, innovation and mystery in their playing.......and this emptiness is not appeased by simply throwing out a bone in the form of bust out.

I really hope they don't throw up a brick tonight. In fact, I am praying for the first time in my life.......screw solving world hunger or bringing about global peace and ending poverty......we just want to have daily face meltage

Ha! I actually think I used the word "apeshit" to describe it
I'm listening to Set II right now. (Went right there. No easing in necessary.) I'm 15 minutes into Seven Below.
Crazy stream-induced hysteria can be a dangerous thing but I can confirm this jam is as interesting as anything offered in 3.0. I just pray to Icculus this wakes the band up and they remember they can jam like this whenever they want to -- which had better be every time from now on!
It's not as if there haven't been moments of brilliance so far this year -- it's just that the band has seemed to lack either the will or the patience to let them develop on a reliable, frequent basis.

Party Time......ok...
Stealin Time....Downer, but played well....
Uncle Pen.....painful.....very painful Trey...thank god for Page and Mike...
Sanity....ok....
Foam....Fishman.....is too low in the mix.....Trey stumbles a bit, not that badly, but that second solo is a discombobulated mess...arpeggios Trey, practice em cuz that's all that solo is that you wrote......Page is killin it.....
Walk Away.....rockin.....standard fare...
NICU...always a fun groove....
Alaska.....This is their Tenessee Jed....no, really it is....play em back to back.....try it
Melt.....ummmm.....A for effort......very very stiff.....ummm...Trey.....uhhh......yeah
Joy...oh boy....
Vultures....Punchier, yet softer.....whoops Trey.....Fishman is all over it......if developed this could be interesting....Trey amazingly opens communication with IT....guitar's tone is SPOT on....rushed the ending....nice though....
BDTNL.....so toss away stuff you won't need in the end, keep what's important......'nuff said.
Seven......Song segment is strong (never enjoyed the song)....9 minutes in they're waiting for a reply.....Page speaks first.....Trey replies after a minute.....noize at 11.....Fish holds it together.....Page changes the subject....everyone thinks about it.....Nice theme at 12:30......13:40 Trey decides he's got something to say.....Mike changes the subject before it can take flight.....Page sinks down with Mike......Trey's looking for the ledge.....he finds it a few feet away.....cautiously walks up to it around the 16 min mark.....off in the distance a UFO is sighted......they watch it hover overhead......17:40 a beam of light shines down from the craft......the 1999-2000 riff rears its head at 19:16.......IT begins speaking thru them....The craft then floats off into the distance and leaves behind......
Ghost.....awkward tempo.....would kill if it was super tight.....HYHU tease at 2:30......Tempo settles at 3:30....nice theme at 4:30.....Trey decides to speak on this subject.....Page decides to add his input.....Mike steps up and makes a statement.....Trey decides to change the subject at 8:15...the other agree....IT begins speaking with them around 8:50........Trey changes the subject again.......this time IT feels more urgent.....IT slinks to the backbeat......IT becomes fragmented, dissonent....Mike plops down underwater for a minute.....chaos....14:31 surfing the cosmic wind now........IT is in control.......the groove is NASTY 16:00 in......tension.....ENERGY.....sense of urgency.....falling......tumbling......opening eyes to.....
Cool It Down.....Fun. Good way to gain your composure after that insanity.....
Jiboo.....ummm....weird tempo....there it goes.....nice conversation between Page and Trey....IT has a firm grasp on the 2 of them.....
Let Me Lie.....piss break....maybe a pretzel....
Wolfman's.....charged.....short and to the point.....Gordo holdin it DOWN.
Julius.....nice!.....for a Julius at least.....lol...glad to hear he learned from Syracuse!
YEM.....nothing special, quite solid.....Great Encore......
This show is weird....it's Bi-Polar. Set 1 gets a 6/6.5. Vultures is the highlight musically......Set 2 gets a 8/8.5. This is really this first time they surrendered to the flow.....they let IT happen.....it didn't sound forced once they locked in on IT, which is good.....there is still a lot of room for improvement; the themes at times sound forced......the explosions are very weaksauce at times....you can feel it ALMOST there, but they haven't consistently reached them or landed on them as a group yet.....Time will help with all that.....
Overall....this show is a 7.5/8

wow i'm completely surprised by the hate on Foam and Uncle Pen........ i'm very surprised actually. Not that my ears are perfect, but I was DIRECTLY behind the tapers, and thought Pen was wicked tight; well, i mean as tight as something like that can be in this situation, as opposed to if they're playing it 10 times a day...
and Foam i thought was spot-on also... only weirdness was that it never got quiet, which kinda disappointed me but it was chill tho.
Yeah and I thought I noticed a little gizzzannnkkkk in # Line there... like Trey forgot the chords or something.

fyp. it is the best. there's no question about it. the Ghost has some serious moments of pure whole band improv. and there is no hesitation, no forcing it, it is flowing through them. it sounds and feels natural as opposed to contrived. it is not all perfect, but the moments are the longest and most sustained we have seen yet from 3.0.

Since this has been an ongoing debate faux, I promise that I will sit down tonight and AGAIN re-listen to that sand and tweezer from 06-07...and then get back to you. I remember it being boring, sloppy, unbelievably poorly played by both Fish and Trey, they couldn't see the forest for the trees.....but as I said, I will re-listen again and get back to you. That being said, this night's jam pwns the living shit out of Camden, regardless of whether I discover an appreciation for the latter.

The Seven Below jam is great.
I suggest those that like the ending part of this jam, listen to the Ghost from Asheville, they are esentially the same jam, but the Asheville Ghost is quicker, imo.
Also, the Ghost is amazing and the YEM is probably my FAVORITE 3.0 YEM. They fucking hit the solo nicely. The Wolfman's is fucking incredible too.
All around everything in this second set (even Let Me Lie) is teh h33t.
This show is the real deal and totally gives Camden a run for it's money.

personally i'm most concerned about the upcoming SPlit open from the comments i've heard. Split is a song that has gotten seriosuly 3.0d even in its best versions this year, and i'm sorta getting PISssed! :samurai:
Split has just been taking different directions this year.
Curious to see which one this version takes...

I'm pretty sure that they have been practicing.
It shows too... just not on every song.
Oh and, excluding the Halloween show, they've played 209 different songs this year.
Including Halloween puts it up to 225 with 82 one-timers.
They HAVE to be practicing... Getting out and playing is part of the equation too and I think the positive results are beginning to show.

And well-said, RJ.
as I listen to 3.0 more and more.....they sound like they have forgot to listen to each other as a whole.....you can tell when they are because the shit is on FIRE.....but when they aren't...SOAM is what you get....
is it just me, or is JOY like the antithesis to BUG?

 right.
not a big Vultuures fan, but i gotta admit they nailed it for the most part. FIshman sounds really good.
this is an ambitious set and really is proof that they have come a long way from Hampton.
one more thing before i take trey's advice and "get outside your room"...i'm gonna go play Modern Warfare in the basement...
overall this set is a winner. besides the ending of SOAM no big letdowns. biggest surprise looking back was the fact that a set with 4 new songs could hold my attention so well, and honestly ROCk.
+K Phish 3.0.
i'll report back later on the 2nd set... we'll see how good of 'nap-time' material it is.

yep. They've been doing a nice job with most of the catalogue. Frankly, I don't mind a few minor things here and there. But there are some songs, for example, Uncle Pen, that rely on the precision to work.
For the most part, they have fluff, stash, and a few others down. It will just take some time.
that said, clearly, the :phish: are moving in the right direction.
Wow. That Melt was not too good.
Back to where I started yesterday... Joy was good. Vultures has a notable flub but that ia more than being made up for with the solo bit here after the verses.
Now that I've put myself back together, I'll go on record--
Best shows I've seen in 3.0. On car listening today, they're not epic the way I thought post-show at the hotel. But they are practicing and they are most definitely having fun.
Rock on, d00ds.
They definitely have been practicing. I think almost all of fall tour so far is a step ahead of the summer shows as a whole.
Now after listening to this -7>ghost a few times now I've noticed a few things...
I will say that between those 2 jams, we def have the best improv of the year. However, I can't really say that either song was played great as a cohesive whole.
Honestly, both of the jams have about 10+ minutes of aimless meandering, it really seems like Trey is lost or run out of ideas at times, there were a couple of times during the -7 jam were it really felt like it was going to take off somewhere, but then never did..... but, the payoff does come, so I'm just so glad that they kept on forging ahead to see what came next because both songs have moments of pure bliss that are few and far between in 3.0
also, anyone notice the "Glory Days" tease by Trey @ the end of 7 below? (might have been unintentional, but def sounded like BRUCE!)
Also this YEM is $. Straight ahead rock your face off, one of the best this year imo.
I adore the solo at the end of Number Line.
Have I mentioned that?

ser some of the best trey i've heard all year.
7Below? Not sucking.
What sets this apart from so much of the 3.0 jamming to date is that it's not all 'rawk-peak-jamming' like the Camden or Philly2 Tweezers.
Not that that 'rawk-peak-jamming' is bad... This stuff is just next level.

prefer waste, any day.
Joy is sometimes placed kinda weird, imo.
like C+P>joy (redrocks).
i don't get it. that's ok, though
Im glad the boys are finally getting their playing in the right direction, ive never lost the faith in the boys and not being able to see the "glory" days, this show makes me feel like there is going to be more glory days! Either way get used to it, there here and they arent going anywhere, but up!

Not that that has anything to do with the YEM as compared musically to the rest of em, but for this reason I'm quite fond of this one as well. I had a blast at that show despite the rough-ass Bowie.

I'll go back and check it out - but I always get bugged out when Fish plays 8th notes in the Boy, Man section of the tune, instead of 16th notes. It just doesn't groove as hard imo. Feels like it's missing something.
Don't get me wrong, I had a blast at B-town as well - thought it was a great show - I just remember the YEM not having enough "oomph". But I'll go back and listen.

So Saturday night was mellower for my crew, mostly b/c everyone partied themselves stupid Friday, but also b/c we were joined by a friend with his two elementary school age kids. I didn't get introduced, but I'm going to say the boy was 11, the girl 8. Just guessing.
Anyway, by the time we got through 7 Below and Ghost, they were pretty sedate. It was well after their bedtimes, I'm sure, and the sensory overload of all that new, strange input--you could just tell. But
Wolfman's starts, and the little girl was up and boogying from the first notes through Julius, to the encore break.

I agreed up until the aimless noodling part. Seven Below and Ghost are both played horribly until the jam. The jams are butter.
Yes, the YEM is the tits. Best 3.0 YEM (I also like Brahgetsdown).
Ew. Really? Why?
Because it was awesome.

I'm not about picking one or the other. I would like to think of both of them as parts of the whole. I think the Ghost is more experimental, however.
Not a lot from Trey in this 7 Below > Ghost segment, I was kind of hoping he'd stepped up and really ripped it but all I hear is Page & Mike pwning like they've been doing for a while now and Trey sitting back.

Trey has too much treble, imo. Also he digiwhammy's the crap out of the 7 below jam opening. But he is definitely present. Do you have a mix with no Trey?

lol,
however, I do believe that it is the rest of the band that pushed these jams where they went. Had Trey had his way, he would of cut the jam off at several locations. You can hear him want to dial it down and then Page and Mike are like....."not tonight pussy, we don't care if your fingers can't keep up yet, we got a reputation to hold up here"

Trey is fully aware he can't keep up. Being that his bag of tricks is limited, he'd be exposed pretty quickly if he kept returning to the same well night after night, this is why we haven't had consistent big jams. They'd all be the same if they were Trey led. That being the case, I wish he would just sit back and let the others take over. At points during that ghost I was reminded of MMW. If only his rock star ego would let him step aside. I'm really anxious to hear him play in the spring after the winter break. I think then we will know just how seriously he is taking all of this.
I just can't get over how awful his guitar tone is. It's worse now than it was in 2.0. It's almost like he thinks the shriller it is, the more energetic the music is.
No. Please start playing guitar again that sounds musical.

I'm calling you both out on this one....
17:30 of 7 Below...start there....for a 3.0 jam, this is the most effortless he's played yet....14:33 of ghost.........18:40....that build to 19 minutes was all Trey and no one else SLAMMING it down......you listen to those segments and tell me he's not just openly playing his ass off....
that is as close to IT you are going to get for 3.0 so far....
there's still a TON of room for improvement, lets not kid ourselves here.....but for 3.0, that is the first time they've tickled the dragon's tail....

gotcha. I'll pick up on it on my next listen I'm sure

100% agreed, while I enjoyed the Seven Below, the Ghost totally destroyed it and really is a contender for best of 3.0.
Also, my soul died a little bit when Page used the "guitar center" synth in the composed section of Seven Below.
LOL @ "guitar center" synth
Didn't I bite that term from you? :-D
doesn't he use that in every Seven Below?

That sounds like a Clavinet through some digital effects processing.

Why would you go through all that trouble when you could get the exact same sound off of a guitar center floor model keyboard?
Seriously though, I feel like Hicks is right on - sounds like a straight up preset.

Same reason Trey feels the need to make his tone all trebly and high pitched and whinny to rock, when it has an actual undesirable effect. I actually liked that use of the "Clav" during the song, and thought it was a cool effect.
I've done the carbon dating analysis and the origin of the "guitar center synth" label has been pinpointed!

The synth lead, a la Hampton Twist, is kinda cheeseball IMO, it has a stock preset sound to it.
I like the way he's been using his other synth tones, although it does seem like the rest of the band doesn't space out so much the way they used to. . .
You talkin about the same synth tone he uses in Suzy's now?
yerp.
Yeah, I call that the "guitar center keyboard" tone.

not sure which i prefer at this point, though i was much more nit picky on revisiting, and flaws aside the jam of seven Below seemed more... coherent? i dunno.
Just getting thru the 1st set of this show today and the Foam - Ouch :frustrated:
NICU was rocking but this SOAM jam is very strange. :?

Did Jeremy used to live in the triangle/Chapel Hill area of NC? If so, there's a good chance I hooked him up with tapes of 10/26/96 in trade for his tapes of 10/31/96 and also that we went to see "Jazz Mandolin Project" together at the Chi Omega house that winter.
If not, I feel like an idiot.
On the subject, after another listen, this show has quickly become and immediate top show of 2009, tying Camden and Hartford for "first" place. Second place has been ceded to Cincy I. This show is the non stop h33t from the beginning of the second set on. Not only does it have two of the best and most exploratorily raw jams, but it also features my favorite 3.0 Wolfman's (except no "Shirley Temple"ing ala Brahgetsdown), my favorite 3.0 Julius (holy 94-96 style Julius, Batman!) and my favorite 3.0 YEM. This is totally a special show, and the Cool It Down "bustout" totally attests to it. I would feel much shame if I had an opportunity to go to this show, and I pussed out.

Yep, it was written by Trey and Tom back in '03. Check your Companions for the Studio CD Men From Nantucket.

I actually think the Melt is interesting. They failed on the execution, but they are totally tweaking Melt in a neat way. I look forward to future versions.

I question your burgettstown love. Like I said i'm not a big fan of that YEM. Def a good show, but I thought the Tube was by a longshot the best jam of the night. I've heard you reference the Wolfman's a few times as well and could never get into it. 6/7 wolfmans pwns 6/18 in a huge way!
my opinion, of course.
listening to set 2 again
couple other observations
Fish has his mojo back
About the 21 min mark of Ghost, right before the crowd goes wild, as it's slowing down - Mike and Fish get into a very cool groove for a few bars. I was hoping they would take off from there, but instead, the spaceship landed. oh well, it's all good
Jiboo-Trey and Page were doing a great job playing off each other. Trey's playing was pretty hot, imo, from Jibboo on
definitely my favorite set of 09.
agree though with comments about the Gorge - some great stuff there too

Hell yes there is.
Okay...
now that i've found my jaw and collected most of my marbles, ive relisteninged to stuffs from at this the show I seen.
Didn't notice the roughness of Uncle Pen in concert... but listening back, its not THAT bad. I shudder at the thought of what this would have sounded like in '03, let alone '04.... eek.
Foam is weird, it sounds like Trey got behind a beat or something after the first chorus. Still, its not THAT bad, I dig the chill island grooveyness of the jam, and he rips some sweet lines at the end, especially is ascending > descending thing at the VERY end. Stealing Time had some fucking DIRTY leads. Maybe it was that song I was thinking was "dirty". I remember now texting my friend who was there and text-yelling "DIRTY!!! FUCKIN DIRTY###@@@@#@!!" It may have been Julius.
But I have such a newfound respect and admiration for SANITY. WOW!!!!!! Holy POW!!!!! BOOM!!!!! That song is one that must ABSOLUTELY be experienced live to understand its full impact... HOLY SHIT. That floored me. Like, not sick jamming; the song is a fucking POWERHOUSE of evil. Jesus christ. They need to play this more often. I think this may be the one song I am most grateful for getting to experience...because it had such a massive paradigm-shifting impact on me.
One other thing, though that I was reaaaaalllly hoping would happen was when the SOAM jam hits the major key part. It was disappointing that CK5 didn't black out the band for the seaweed, but I guess its better he didn't because the band seemed to stutter on the beat then. The jam starts out really well I think... but I LUV at 5:30 when Trey is all like "YO! Lets make this major key!!!" but Page is all like "Nah fuck that.... DISSSOOONANNNCCCCEeEEEE@@@!!!!!" Unfortunately Trey just wanders, and nothing very material materializes. It all goes to hell when he brings out his tremolo.... he kinda brings it back, and the jam has great promise around 8:43, but nah. Whammy trills kill it. While this jam is most certainly not a trainwreck, it does go absolutely nowhere... which is rather unfortunate.
But live it was neat, it had a little bit of that "falling down stairs" feeling. But Trey's ending is really bad... he totally can't get it together. They should have just like, totally DESTROYED the song and obliterated it into nothingness and chaos. Its ouchy.
Number Line has Trey losing it.... "where you drift in time..." he falls apart. But the jam is where its at. I think this perfectly illustrates what was to come... the band builds it patiently, all working together. Trey has some wicked good theme going from like 4:30 until a high note peack at 5:03 and some wicked imaginative lines going throughout the entire 5-minute section. Its just a shame that his hands aren't waht they used to be.... you totally "see" what he's trying to do, but his hands just won't do it. The jam isn't anywhere near as raging as it was live... its still totally aweosme, but live this was fuckin HUGE. I guess CK5 does matter... lol.
I'm still disappointed at the change in Jibboo's arrangement... I guess its an inconsequential part of the song, but that little diddly lead part i always liked. And I wish Trey would leave the whammy loop on so it was audible... but this jam is fucking sweet. Page is gorgeous. Trey is spacious, and considerate, and thoughtful, and imaginative...and Page dances all over it.
i gotta go to bed now tho

The Seven Below feels more deliberate and cautious, at least the first 12 minutes. I still like the Ghost better because it has so many layers and changes. Everyone seems to be a large part of the jam. For me, it took off because of Mike. He has been a mad man!
Does anyone notice the "Cool It Down" vamping from Trey and Page at the beginning of the Ghost jam? The first time I heard it, I thought the opening of the jam sounded "Back On The Train-Esque". The second time I heard it I thought "Holy s%^*! That's Cool It Down!".
Yes, he loves the Cool It Down riffery in that Ghost.

My brain just exploded.
heh...
I just had a WEIRD thought/revelation, though... I'm listening to Set 2 again, and Ghost just started, and I was still thinking back to the Seven Below jam (the lick at 20:49 is WHAT ITS FUCKING ABOUT!!!) and like, right as I was thinking about the jam, Trey was singing, and I thought about the ironies inherent to what just happened....
Specifically, it was the "ghost I once knew and talked to" and I couldn't help but make the connection that Trey was singing that song as some sort of commentary to the crowd in regards to the mammoth jam that had just happened, sort of like a commentary about like "yeah we used to do this shit with our eyes closed, and now we can again" especially because of the "maybe he's still with me" line.
So maybe the ghost is IT. Because it really NEVER did speak a word. It made vocalizations, like in "Guy Forget" and the Ball Mike's, but it never did speak. It came in action; the jamming was action, and the lights accompanying IT were action.
and then that maybe, towards the end, Trey thought that he could fake it through the shows without needing IT, that people would continue coming to see shows regardless of whether or not the band was an absolute joke and a pathetic shell of what they once were, which WAS true. And because Trey stopped caring, and didn't need that epic jamming anymore to draw people, it stopped showing up.
And that all they had to do was simply GO THERE again, and he would show up. Because aside from the Hampton Disease and the Camden Sand, nothing they'd done yet ever approached that sort of epic hugeness, in terms of time. Everything had been short, to the point, and safe. So, its always been there, but the band just had to get back into form to be able to "look" to see if it is still there.
I donno, it makes sense in my head. So i guess that automatically means none of you will get it, though... haha
Ghost is fucking sick, though. holy shit. Thank Jerry Fishman decided to bust into that double time shit...

7 Below: 8:05 - because NOW you know shits about to hit the fan, because the -7 Reprise gave way to the unknown...
7 Below: 12:20 - because Trey wants to play Shine!!! (in all fairness, Page actually introduced it about a minute earlier...)
7 Below: Trey lick at 20:47 - most important lick EvAR!!
Ghost: 11:30-11:33 courtesy of one Mr. Pay Jorgan Lick.
Not sure which I like best; I keep goin back and forth. I think I may have to go with 7 Below, because of 16 mins -> onward. Its more floaty and happy and joyous and the Ghost jam is more dark funk and then fucking SHRAGE. But the thing about the 7 Below is that it has that shrage power, but it also has a melodic/thematic foundation, like the 7/22/03 Gumbo ending, or the Camden Sand.
But tomorrow I might be in the mood for a shred Ghost like 11/11/98 or 12/31/99, sooo

So i guess that automatically means none of you will get it, though... haha
Amazingly I think I get what your saying, Gumbo :beers:
And I pretty much agree, with a slightly different interpretation.....Phish (as a unit, when they are really cohesively together) seems to tap into some universal power/inspiration when they are really jamming and improvising. I believe its the most powerful sound in the universe (well at least known to man).
Anyway, the ghost/IT/whatever you want to call it is just that...something divine and powerful. Really listening to the words of the song make me think of God (and I'm not religious at all). There are so many references to the spirit, etc, and how Trey thought he didn't need it/him/her anymore, but it's still waiting there for us just the same (in the wind and rain, it you look).
The ghost still lifts us up, even when we don't know it or care. But when we are looking, tapping into the power deep down, it really comes out. Especially in the music of Phish.
The more shows I go to, the more a religious experience or ritual they've become. Even with the playing....it seems that the band must go through this ritualistic journey of each set. On a great night, they will build up into astounding peaks and glide through beatuiful valleys, one song transforming into the next, until finally, IT happens, and they reach complete unity, playing as one., and the notes are carved out of the air, the sound filling the arena and everyone also grooving as one.
I think you all know what I'm taking about. Sorry for the ramble.
At any rate, Ghost = god/IT/spirit/whatever you want to call a universal power of inspiration
IMHO. :-D

Whoa. I'm with you dude... crazy, but I can buy it.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who made that connection....
So, do you guys think the boys make a decision to stretch out some songs beforehand or do you think it is fully in the moment.....Do they say, okay let's stretch this one out a bit tonight or what? I mean they've got to have some sort of set planning/setlist writing and if they are going to play one (camden) or two (albany) 25+ minute songs, wouldn't that sort of figure into that plan ahead of time? I dunno, maybe I am just baked...

i totally know what you're talkin about (even tho i'm baked too.. :-D )
but i've been wondering the same exact thing since the camden sand so everytime they'd start to stretch out when i'm there i've been specifically watching for that. like body language, cues, etc...
@ albany2 we were 4th row floor so during both of those big jamz i was trying to figure it out.
couldn't really tell but if i had to guess, i think it might go both ways.
some are planned & others just happened.. :?
^^^Yeah, you wish Trey would go both ways! :-P (Ba-dum-bump.)
Seriously, though, I've often wondered the very same thing, and I think you're probably right. In the immortal words of Abe Simpson, "A little from column (A), a little from column (B)."

Dear Phish,
There are too many states nowadays. Please eliminate 3.

i think this is it. There are def times when the music just HAPPENS and takes them to "that place" w/o even trying
But I assume there are also other times where they make a concious effort to stretch things out (I think Big Cypress is the best example of this..... I'm pretty sure they went into this show knowing that they were gonna jam like mad)
use your ears....
LISTENING to Phish is an art form......the language being spoke is music.....
That being said.....I'm sure they make plans that don't hash out on stage, and I'm sure there are things they don't hash out that play themselves out on stage....IMHO, I can hear when it's happening vs. when it's planned....planned things usually sound a lil more forced, and you can follow the setup to the change being made.....
One of the only downfalls from doing so many txfers/editing/mastering of these guys.....makes it kinda hard to sit back and just listen

absolutely. most 3.0 segues (with a few exceptions) sound pretty forced.

exactly. unfortunately this "sticking to the script" is most responsible for some of the jarring gear shifts and awkward segues that have plague 3.0. What I hear with the -7>Ghost, and I have mentioned this previously, is Trey trying to stick to the script, reaching the 12-15 minute mark (can't remember when exactly) and then saying "okay, now segue" only this time the rest of the band said no way (especially Page). I really would have loved to have watched this jam evolve up close as I bet, initialy, there was a little tension on stage as they forced Trey to extend the jam. That obviously fell away as it morphed into magic but at first I imagine there was a look of WTF from Trey.

This is EXACTLY as I would have put it. Trey goes back into the main theme as Page is soloing...Page gets louder and more intense as if to say "f you Trey we're jamming tonight, get in line!!!" You clearly hear Trey struggling to come up with an idea before Mike walks him through it after that. trey REALLY wanted to go back into the theme of -7.
the Red Rocks Drowned->C&P, however, was butta! And definitely planned ahead of time I would assume...

It def. caught me by surprise.
I listened to this again... and frankly I think you're all high or something.
Trey struggles throughout most of this Seven Below > Ghost to find a theme that's actually interesting.
The band bobs and weaves (skillfully) around Trey's lack of interesting playing. I really believe that the reason there are so many different "themes" in this segment is because Trey can't settle onto anything worthy of what the rest of the band is playing.
Backing up a little, the Split Open & Melt is a trainwreck, seems like nobody was listening to Trey towards the end.
I almost wonder if Page & Mike made a point of not letting Trey finish things early because it sounds like they're ignoring him at the end of Split and they boldly ignore his attempt to end Seven Below.
There is no question that Trey was the weak link in the -7>Ghost

I'm with you, Matt. Mike and Page do a great job diverting Trey from uninteresting territories. I think the 7 Below>Ghost is overrated. The true treasures this tour, for me, are still 12 minutes or less. Light has been the biggest surprise for me. Great stuff every time.
Wow! I should have known a lot would be said about 7 Below > Ghost. I won't even touch it with words. Unbelievable...is about all I can think of.
Sanity, put incredibly lame, was insane. Seriously though I knew Chris was going to have fun tonight when they started this. I enjoyed the lights more at Albany II than ever before. Usually they are almost noise to me but not here.
Stealing Time was ridiculously intense. I don't think I'll ever hear this song in the same way again.
I'll skip over some of the obvious Trey flubs. The 2nd set cancelled them all out for me. Although most of which could not be heard (at least not by me) at the show. Damn SBD's! :frustrated: Sometimes I wish I would just stick to the AUD's.
SOAM was very well played. I don't think much has been said about it. It is definitely worth another listen if you haven't really checked it out.
YEM was definitely the best I've seen but I haven't had too many of them I guess. MSG III was probably better but I prefer this one.
Wow. I started listening right after New Years to the past tour starting at Detroit and going through show by show. I haven't been able to stop re-listening to this show to make it through the end of the tour yet. Structured parts of songs were definitely off. When even I can notice how far off they are on Foam and Pen, I know it's bad. Trey at least caught up for the closing of Pen. This -7>Ghost may not be the farthest-reaching jam of PH, but it's by far the best of 2009 (that I've listened to up to this point). I distinctly heard 2001 and boaf teases. This 2nd set has to be the best of the year despite the problems of set I. Awesome.
Those 2oo1 teases made the next version of it pop off like a mofo.

Just sayin this ghost really isn't overrated. 3.0 moving start>dark awesome type II>birds jam.
Shits raw.

Indeed. Just listened to this show again a few days ago. that Ghost put me in a great place. Didn't lose interest at all. I wanted to see if it was as good as I remembered from the last time I listened (maybe a year ago) and it certainly didn't disappoint.

I was just listening to this set II the other day, along with the 08-05-10 RnR.
I had almost forgotten about this show. The -7 -> ghost > cool it down is a really great segment of a show. Some serious hoseage going on.
