NBC sucks... But directv is making it better. I can pick out all tht swimming segments and record. Same for any sport.

Also, watching volleyball now.

Enjoyed the opening ceremony -- it really is a spectacle the likes of which you only see but once every four years. Matt and Merideth were pissing me off, though. Only a fraction of what they had to say was actually interesting or helpful; the rest of the time it sounded like they were calling the damn Thanksgiving Day parade.

Enjoyed the parade of nations too... Bob Costas can be a sarcastic little fucker sometimes, which is funny.

NBC's coverage can only be described as "piss-poor."

Even if it were live, the coverage teams are just idiots.

The one bright spot is the DirecTV app that has allowed me to record all the swimming pre-lims and every USA water-polo game without having to record the entire day.

If you've never watched water polo, you should. It's the roughest sport out there... at least on-par with rugby and hockey for brutality between players... the crazy thing is the women are even rougher than the men...

I saw a few minutes of a preview for this and was really surprised actually at how intense it was...Still, I don't really have any interest in any of the Olympics asides from the opening and closing ceremonies. Actually, I didn't even bother with the opening ceremonies, so yeah, I have little to no interest in this. As you were.

That was awesome. I was going to post about that last night.  :music:  :smoke:

Interestingly enough, when NBC upped it to their website the music selection was changed.

http://sports.gunaxin.com/michael-phelps-highlights-set-tweezer-phish/125982

QuoteMichael Phelps is now the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time, after winning his 18th and 19th medal today. NBC led into an interview with Phelps this evening by playing video of all 19 of those medals, set to some familiar music. They chose Tweezer Reprise by Phish for the Beijing segment, a choice that seems oddly appropriate for an athlete who has been linked to marijuana usage previously. Phelps seemed laid back in the interview despite Bob Costas poking him about his disappointing performance at the games.

Amazingly, when the non-embeddable version of this video montage made it's way onto the NBC Olympics site, it was with different music in the background. Apparently NBC execs weren't too proud of their connection to Phish.

Sure you just won an Olympic medal and brought your country glory and honor, but hey, Uncle Sam's gotta get his!

Who, What, Why: Why are US athletes taxed on Olympic medal wins?
US medal-winning athletes at the Olympics have to pay tax on their prize money - something which is proving controversial in the US. But why are athletes from the US taxed when others are not?

The US is right up there in the medals table, and has produced some of the finest displays in the Olympics so far.

Michael Phelps has broken the record for most Olympic medals ever, and 16-year-old rising star Gabby Douglas has won the all-round gold in the gymnastics - the first African-American woman to do so.

So the US is feeling pretty proud of its athletes right now. But not everyone is happy to hear that their Olympic medal-winning athletes are being taxed on their medal prize money.

Athletes are effectively being punished for their success, argues Florida Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican, who introduced a bill earlier this week that would eliminate tax on Olympic medals and prize money.

"Athletes representing our nation overseas in the Olympics shouldn't have to worry about an extra tax bill waiting for them back home," said Rubio.

This, he said, is an example of the "madness" of the US tax system, which he called a "complicated and burdensome mess".

The US Olympic Committee awards prize money to its medal winners - $25,000 (£16,000) for gold, $15,000 (£10,000) for silver, and $10,000 (£6,000) for bronze.

This money is considered taxable income by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

According to the advocacy group Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), an athlete on the highest rate of tax (35%), could face a tax bill of $8,750 (£5,600).

The value of the medals themselves could be subject to tax too, according to the ATR - adding a further $236 (£150), $135 (£85), and $2 (£1.20) respectively for gold, silver and bronze.

The Olympic example highlights what they regard as the underlying problem of the US' so-called "worldwide" tax model.

Under this system, earnings made by a US citizen abroad are liable for both local tax and US tax.

I respect that, but it bugs me when my news feeds blow up twice in the same day about the same exact event as if the race happened twice. Mostly dumb girls I know, which easily quadruples the annoying factor (unless I can see their boobs, in which case they can say whatever they want)

...

Taxing prize money is one thing (I can't object too much with it being considered "income"), but taxing you on the "value" (according to who, anyway?) of your medal or trophy or some other trinket is absurd. This means that, the only way to avoid actually being worse off financially would be to sell the medal and pay the taxes out of that, and who the hell would want to sell an Olympic medal just to pay its tax?

[side rant]

For that matter, the very notion of taxing someone once they come into possession of any physical object is unreasonable, in my opinion. (E.g. Oprah giving away cars to everyone in her audience.) What this says is, if you keep the object, you wind up worse off financially because you had to pay a tax. Taxes should never cost you money -- they should only apply when you are amassing more money. So, if/when you do decide to sell that car or heirloom or what have you, fine, go ahead and tax that transaction.

When someone is awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, does the government turn around and stick that person with a tax bill because they believe that the shiny object has some inherent value?

[/side rant]

Nice placement of that rings tat...

Soni looks a lot like this girl from my old neighborhood growing up... we did swim team together, in fact.

Worst part about swimming is that the girls intentionally pull their suits so tight and squash down their boobies (I assume to make them more streamlined or some nonesense like that). At least Soni always seems to be nipping...

I see your point, but that's not something I would do. I simply meant that showing a monkey in an ad shouldn't be seen as offensive, especially coming from someone like NBC that's in the public eye on such a massive scale and has so much to lose from being painted as racist.

odd to see that comercial at that point in time. obviously no one looked at the big picture when they planned out the show.

if that spot was shown just about any other time last night, I bet no one would have noticed.

Yes, because people only are offended when something is legitimately offensive (see Janet Jackson's boob). Give me a break.

Like sls said, if that commercial had aired at any other point in the broadcast (or, BTW, if a Russian bitch had won the gold medal), nobody would have given a shit. That tells me this is more faux outrage from an increasingly hypersensitive public. YMMV

So things are only legitimately offensive when you, Week4paug, or NBC says it is and not when someone is actually offended???  Interesting...  Using your logic, being racist isn't actually an issue, its that black people take offense to racism that's the issue???  Or in this case, its not offensive b/c a collection of white people say it isn't???

I agree with the hypersenstivity, and that there is lots of faux outrage about this...  As you said, moving said commercial to any other point in the 4hour broadcast would have made it a non-issue...  But come on now...  NBC had many hours to preview their broadcast, its not like it was "live" like Janet Jackson.

Terry

No, my point was that the level of outrage is not directly proportional to the seriousness of the offense, which is what your statement implied (or at least how I read it).

OK, but I don't think its up to anyone except the offended to determine the "proportionality" of offense...

LOL!  Quit trying to claim your burning cross is just there to provide warmth for your pointy-hat friends...   :-P

Yeah, that logic will really fly when you call the next black guy you see a "porch monkey"...  Let us know how it all turns out!

it's ok, they're taking it back...

US women's soccer pulled off a huge win over our neighbors to the north over the weekend and we've got an All-US women's beach volleyball final!

Our women rock... The women's water polo team advanced to the final in overtime today, too. Tough match against rival Australia today. Fuck yeah!

Speaking of desperate........was this your country's only chance at a medal this time around?  Is that why you're so upset?

Sorta?

Our Men's soccer team hasn't qualified for the World Cup since '88.

Canada hasn't won a medal in ANY traditional team sport at the Olympics.  Ever.
