Eagles fans petition for the Pope to 'rub Sam Bradford's knees'
Pope Francis has a pretty full itinerary during his scheduled visit to Philadelphia in late September, but fans of the Philadelphia Eagles hope he can make a quick stop to the team's complex to bless the team's new quarterback, Sam Bradford.
Bradford is coming off two ACL tears, so fans created a lighthearted petition on Change.org titled, "Have Pope Francis Rub Sam Bradford's Knees."
Here's the petition's description:
QuoteThe Pope is coming to Philly! Our city! With this Eagles season coming up, a lot of our Super Bowl hopes rely on Sam Bradford's knees staying healthy. So, with one of the most religious representatives in the world visiting our wonderful place we call home, how about we get him to bless Bradford's knees during his visit to Philly! This town deserves a Super Bowl, and a healthy Bradford is the only way we will have a parade down Broad Street! Please sign this petition and Go Eagles and Welcome to Philly, Pope Francis!!!!
As of Tuesday evening, the petition has more than 3,600 signatures and is inching closer to its goal of 5,000.
As for Bradford, reviews of his performance thus far in training camp have been positive as the Eagles prepare for their first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
The team actually has a road game against the New York Jets the weekend the Pope is scheduled to be in town (Sept. 26-27), so maybe he can make a short pit stop after his Saturday morning Mass and bring some divine intervention to Bradford and the Birds before they head to New York.

BREAKING: Tom Brady beats NFL in 'Deflategate' court case, judge nullifies league's 4-game suspension.

Judge lets Brady play, ruling against NFL in 'Deflategate'
NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge deflated "Deflategate" Thursday, erasing New England quarterback Tom Brady's four-game suspension for a controversy that the NFL claimed threatened football's integrity.
U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell went too far in affirming punishment of the Super Bowl winning quarterback. Brady has insisted he played no role in a conspiracy to deflate footballs below the allowable limit at last season's AFC championship game.
The written decision frees Brady to prepare for the Sept. 10 season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The ruling was a surprise to some legal experts who believed Berman was merely pressuring the league to settle when he criticized its handling of the investigation and discipline over the last eight months.
The league brought the scandal to Berman's Manhattan courtroom immediately once Goodell upheld Brady's four-game suspension, blasting the quarterback for arranging the destruction of his cellphone and its nearly 10,000 messages just before he was interviewed for the NFL probe. The union countersued, said Brady did nothing wrong and asked the judge to nullify the suspension.
While the league investigation found it was "more probable than not" that two Patriots ball handling employees deliberately released air from Patriots game balls at January's 45-7 New England victory over the Indianapolis Colts, it cited no direct evidence that Brady knew about or authorized it.
Goodell, though, went beyond the initial investigation report, finding in late July as a result of testimony from Brady and others that the quarterback conspired with the ball handlers and tried to obstruct the league's probe, including by destroying his cellphone.
The commissioner said he concluded Brady "knew about, approved of, consented to, and provided inducements and rewards" to ensure balls were deflated.
Berman attacked the league while questioning one of its lawyers at two hearings, citing a lack of proof against Brady and asking how Goodell settled on a four-game suspension instead of other discipline.
He warned the league that he had the authority to overturn its punishment of Brady if he found the NFL acted unfairly by refusing to deliver NFL Executive Vice President Jeff Pash as a witness even though he worked on the NFL investigation.
Berman's ruling does not necessarily end the dispute. The league can appeal.
Berman had repeatedly urged both sides to settle and tone down their rhetoric. At a hearing Monday attended by Brady and Goodell, the judge announced that both sides had "tried quite hard" to reach a deal in morning talks. But the case was left for him to decide.
As they negotiated, the sides attacked each other in court papers.
In one August court filing, the union said the four-game suspension displayed "a clearly biased agenda — not an effort at fairness and consistency," and it criticized Goodell's ruling upholding the suspension as a "smear campaign," a "propaganda piece written for public consumption."
In its papers, the NFL said there was "ample support" in evidence for the commissioner to conclude Brady was involved in efforts by the Patriots equipment personnel to deflate footballs.

YEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH BOOOYYYYYY.
That was still a horrible game though. We were shooting ourselves in the foot the entire time, along with two horribly unlucky turnovers. New York took advantage of our every mistake. We were beating ourselves for than NY was. That said, I'll take a win any day. Romo came thru in the clutch like he has so many times before. Jack (zimbra) and I were chatting in our usual group text with a few other buddy's most of the game. It was entertaining to go back and read it.

Drew Brees runs into law of NFL injury averages, only adds to Saints' 2015 crossroad season: Larry Holder
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees had to suspect the law of NFL injury averages might have caught up with him once the sputtering 26-19 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday ended. Maybe even in the first half.
Brees suffered a hit on his right arm on a sack-fumble by the Bucs' Jacquies Smith early in the second quarter. He got up and tried to shake it off. That didn't happen.
His play noticeably dwindled. Everyone in the building knew Brees was playing hurt. He knew it. He admitted it. And now, we'll have to see how the Saints and Brees deal with the injury.
Brees will miss "some games" and possibly several games after taking the shot to the arm, according to the NFL Network. ESPN is reporting Brees' playing status going forward will depend on how Brees responds to treatment as an MRI revealed Brees avoided a serious shoulder injury.
The Saints didn't want to comment about the reports of the severity of the injury Monday afternoon, but not even injury ninja Sean Payton hid the fact Brees was injured.
Regardless of the condition, Brees is in serious danger of missing time with the Saints for the first time in his 10-year career.
Peyton Manning missed an entire season with a neck injury. Tom Brady tore his ACL in Week 1 and ended his 2008 season after Week 1. Aaron Rodgers missed seven games in 2013 with a shoulder injury.
Brees has been a rare breed. It's been nearly 10 years since Brees missed a game because of an injury.
Brees managed to avoid missing any playing time with a near-miraculous return from a completely torn labrum and partially torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder in the final game of the 2005 season. He played Week 1 in 2006 and the rest is history, until now.
Obviously, the severity of the injury will determine which immediate direction the Saints will turn going forward.
Do the Saints wait out Brees and leave him off short-term injured reserve, much less season-ending IR? Do the Saints turn to Luke McCown or Garrett Grayson? Severity also plays a role in this decision, and McCown seems like the Saints' choice.
Brees also admitted his throwing shoulder bothered him during last season following Sunday's loss. Throw another injury on top of last year's ailment and you can understand Brees' downtrodden demeanor during his postgame press conference.
It also lends the question as to whether Brees can ever fully recover from this set of injuries to his moneymaker to a form that made him a Super Bowl MVP and future Hall of Famer. The answer is probably no.
This adds about seven new, unexpected layers to the crossroad season of 2015 for the Saints.
Depressed yet, Saints fans?

Hardy came out guns-blazing, but the Pats did enough to make it look easy. Cannot wait to see how many TB12 drops on the Colts. Big time F U game coming next week.
Pats pulled off a good win last night, WTF was that weird 4th down play the colts tried to pull in the 3rd-4th quarter?? I dont think he was expecting him to actually snap him the ball and maybe try and draw them offsides but that back fired.
Ravens continue to be disappointing
so did anyone see that crazy call in the endzone during the Lions v Bears game? How was that a TD? Even Golden Tate looked surprised when they ruled it a TD and just kinda went with it.

which is more pathetic?
Phila turning over the ball 3 times in the 3rd quarter
The Giants scoring 0 points off the turnovers
2 Eagles drives ended, but then resumed because of dumb penalties (running into the kicker, too many men), all in the 3rd quater

I do not understand why the nfl forces fox to switch games when a game is close with two minutes left. Second week in a row they've done this to saints fans. This one was unforgivable.
The thing I really don't get is that directv promises every down of every Sunday game, but the games are blacked out if they're on locally. Then when they switch to another game locally, it's still blacked out on the ticket. So much for every down of every game. Wtf?

One way to get around this is switch to the Game Mix channel. It's a much smaller picture, but you should be able to still watch it that way and get the audio, as well. At least I think that's the case. Either that or the Red Zone channel.

The Giants have consistently fucked up end of game clock management. It's their Achilles heal.
Meanwhile, this... Flicking this:

Looks like Fox jumped the gun. Sean Peyton says no staff changes today.
SI captured one of the many missed Denver holds on their cover

damn, that was a crazy game, cant believe denver pulled it off
on another note, that browns/ravens game was just as wild, cant believe that blocked field goal return either
I'll never understand why Garrett let Romo play... Take the horrible season, draft a QB in round 1 and let him ride behind Romo for a few years before he retires. Oh wait, Jerry Jones is the biggest idiot in sports. How could I forget?
One of the craziest finishes to a game I've ever seen.
Nice work Packers.

I can see though how in real time, the ref thought it was a true face mask.
With that being said, learn how to defend the hail mary play.
2 unbelievable finishes this week! Ravens/Browns blocked field goal return and Packers/Lions Hail Mary. Def 2 of the best this year!

My exact thought.
well, there was exactly 1 meaningful game in december here in chicago.
Coughlin is done
going on 4th and 2 in the 4th quarter, up 10 is beyond belief
Is it just me or are the refs extra bad this year?

They are inexcusably bad. However, I would also say that the play on the field has been pretty bad. Exhibit A: tonight's Skins-Cowboys game

Dude, in the Saints/Panthers game the refs missed TWO 12 men in the huddle calls on Carolina. In his post-game presser Payton said "that's a call they don't miss on Friday nights"
Fucking readicculus.

Last night's game was unwatchable if you aren't a fan of either team or a degenerate gambler.
...
so the Pats win the toss before OT and elected to kick??

Not a Chip fan??
Fuck Jerry Reese. It should be his head on a spike, not Coughlin's. Reese has never once taken any responsibility for his terrible signings and draft choices, yet that is exactly why we have missed the playoffs for the past 4 years (injuries too, but the defense was atrocious even before that). To force out a Hall of Fame coach who won you 2 Super Bowls with "ordinary" teams - against the Patriots, nonetheless - is just disgusting behavior. He's a moron and should have resigned 2 years ago, and I really have no idea how ownership doesn't see thru his bullshit press conferences.
/end rant
Reese is the real problem. Cloughlin got us 2 SB championships.
That said, some of the play calling this year was questionable. He should have pulled Beckham (for a few downs, at least) in the Carolina game.
Reese should have been 1st to go, then maybe Coughlin
whatever, thanks to Coughlin for what you achieved.
Specifically, his time management/play call at the end of games this year was mind boggling. I'd say it cost you a few wins and who knows, in this division, possibly a shot at the playoffs.
You can't manage the clock of you can't run
What a fucking joke the bengals are!

Pacman Jones doubling down on the stupid was quintessential Marvin Jones. Bravo NFL.
Best part was I called a Bengals personal foul would make the drive for the Steelers. Then Vontaze had the pick. The only move left for Marvin was to try to run a play and see how bad his boys could fuck it up. And they delivered.
I was entertained. :beers:
Let's go Vikings!
That was ridiculous

Ho hum, another Pats appearance in the Conference Championship game.
But that Cardinals-Packers ending? So glad I set the dvr up to watch the 4th quarter after watching some lame concert stream.

Def rooting for the Broncos here. Probably pulling for Cards next, but I'll be happy either way.
This is probably the hardest I've ever rooted for Denver. I don't hate NE as much as everyone else who doesn't live in Massachusetts (still dislike them quite a bit), but I just get tired of seeing the same teams make it year in and year out. I always welcome a change/new team.
Yup, plus I want Peyton to get one last shot at the title

What a fun game to watch, really thought the Pats would tie it there in the end.
Damn the missed extra point really crippled them in the end

Once again, Denver's defense was friggin awesome.
they would have won if my sister played QB tonight
Liked the outcome but that game was a sloppy snoozer IMO.
Nice capper for Manning's career though.

It's a testament to Denver's D, honestly. Cam has been dominant over so many defenses this year. To shut him down was impressive.
Not to take anything away from Denver, that "imcomplete pass" that held up on challenge made no sense. Then it was followed by the defensive TD.
The league needs to look at that
A brutal take on Cam's night:

Cam Newton, a Man of Many Talents, Falls Short on Leadership
by Michael Powell Feb. 8, 2016
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — There was no humiliation to be found in Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton's performance on the field at the Super Bowl. The Denver Broncos defenders charged like banshees and werewolves, coming over and under and hurtling around the Panthers defense.
The young quarterback was sacked six times, fumbled when the man-mountain known as Von Miller tossed him to the turf. Some brilliant javelin throws to the side, Newton had a less than stellar night.
His humiliation came after the game, however, and it was self-imposed.
Newton, 26, an ebullient, intelligent, gifted quarterback, decided to act in his moment of truth like a 13-year-old. He slouched into the interview room late, well after a number of his teammates, rookies and veterans alike, had gamely answered one painful question after another.
He took a seat, a blue sweatshirt hood pulled low over his face. He made eye contact with no one. What did he make of the game? Was he surprised? How could he explain? The reporters' questions arrived one after the other, not a surprise in the batch, some framed as gently as if offered by dimwitted therapists. For more than a minute, he stared at the floor, scratched his chin, curled his lip and sulked.
Newton did not have much to say during his post-game news conference.
Anything he would do differently? "No."
What did his coach tell the team? "He told us a lot of things."
Did the Denver defense take away Carolina's running lanes? "No."
He offered a few more monosyllabic answers and then got up and walked away.
It was as if Newton was intent on taking his magical season, his jumping jacks and dabs and evident leadership, and poking a hole in his side. He let his charisma and leadership drain away, to be replaced by a soup of the sour and the petulant.
Newton did not put up a uniquely poor effort. This was no game for the ages, this penalty-strewn, butterfingered, butter-toed exercise of Denver outlasting its opponent. Peyton Manning, the ancient mariner of a Broncos quarterback, was reduced to gesturing and fakes, and little more. His team moved more or less not at all, the Broncos offense consisting of a mind-numbing set of runs that went nowhere and of Manning passes that went a yard or two, or three.
Manning's throws resembled whiffle balls; one hung so softly in the air that defensive end Kony Ealy simply reached out and intercepted it with a single hand.
The Broncos' defense was brilliant, except when its cornerback Aqib Talib was grabbing at an opponent's face mask and trying to twist his head off like a mad farmer with a chicken. Talib received three flags in the first half and in most other sports would have been sent to the showers by the referees. "B.S. flags," he called his penalties, adding, "One I just did on purpose, and I just had to show him."
Then Talib talked about how special it was that his children watched him that night.
This is what passes for a heartwarming N.F.L. moment.
The mesmerizing figure, however, was Newton, who is so prodigiously talented. As an ESPN writer noted, Newton, at 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, is bigger than any player on the Green Bay Packers championship team in Super Bowl I. He reads offenses with a Jesuitical intensity, and he is that rare pocket passer who can dodge and weave and break off loping runs.
He can be, in other words, an awful lot of fun to watch.
Newton was harassed by Broncos defenders, like Malik Jackson, right, all night.
If, on some plays on Sunday, he resembled a water bug in a jar, jumping this way and that, he was game in taking on that relentless Broncos defense. For long stretches of the second and third quarters, he was the most exciting player on the field. He finished 18 of 41 for 265 yards, and he fumbled twice.
By the final quarter, however, his body English spoke to demons taking slow possession of his house. Denver linebacker DeMarcus Ware went horizontal and laid him out. As Newton bounced off the turf, he gave an annoyed look, a princeling not accustomed to such tough handling.
He wandered to the Panthers sideline. The Panthers trailed just 16-7, very much in this game. Three weeks ago, I had watched Newton rally his team, doing jumping jacks, leaping and exchanging chest bumps with his receivers and runners.
Not now. He wandered down the sideline and stared into space.
Then he put his hands on his knees and stared at the ground for 14 seconds.
Later, slowly, he wandered back toward his bench. He walked to his offensive line — a porous lot this night — and slapped two hands. Then he wandered off again.
It was as if this were the prologue to the denouement.
The Panthers acquitted themselves well after the game. The rookie wide receiver Devin Funchess took question after question. "It was playoff ball, man, they exploded off the ball," he said. "It hurts."
And their big defensive end, Charles Johnson, spoke of not having "the energy we usually have."
"We didn't execute like we usually do," he added.
Over in the corner of the interview room, the top-paid player on the team, the marquee man, was not showing leadership.
This need not be Newton's epitaph. Others have sulked ignominiously, not the least the Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who brings a belligerent, not to mention monosyllabic, irascibility to nearly every encounter with the news media, win or lose.
Newton has fine mentors from which to learn grace, among them the Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon, who endured years of racially tinged self-imposed exile in Canada in the 1980s before an N.F.L. team consented to allow him to take snaps and lead a team.
Newton's talents are many. His challenge is to prove himself equal to leading his fine team.
^ That's brutal :-o
walking down during my lunch break to catch the parade, people already out there with lawn chairs :-o
