man, you know...  i don't know.  I almost think they did it on purpose, because of the fact that they had to do it the last time they played the song at that venue.

cuz after the intro, EVERYONE is off...  very blatantly.  but then on the re-try, its all fine...

if it wasn't on purpose, I think that they all must have been thinking about it, and then laughing...  or that Trey remembered it, and started laughing so hard that it threw everyone off.

i'm not sure.

Gordo gives it away.

i just listened to it again loudly, and he's all like plink, plunk, plunk, clank, plunk, plunk.
maybe the most off i've ever heard him.

and then they all kinda just fade out. to me the fade sounds like they were expecting to stop.
do you think Gordo woulda forgot how to play YEM at a show with that much importance?

they prolly practiced that tune just as much if not more than any others.

yeah thats what i'm sayin....  you hear Mike play a note after everyone else has stopped after the "first" intro.  and then when they start up the next part, Fish doesn't even start, Page is way off, and Trey is just all sorts of fucked up.

i listened to it like 20 times mad loudly to try and figure out what Trey was saying after he says "were starting this song again"

without seeing the look on theire faces, my guess when I first hear that was it was too much of a coincidence given Jan 03.

of course, I 've been wrong before.
Title: Re: 3/6/09 YEM's
Post by: McGrupp on March 20, 2009, 01:40:13 PM
Why would they intentionally do this? My guess is that Trey just had a flashback of 03 and couldnt shake the thought/feeling of when it happened that time. It just got to him and he 'had' to start it over. I just don't really see any good that would come out of them intentionally messing it up...

Why would they intentionally do this?

to make me feel the way it made me feel at the show when it happened.

confused.

"wait, did they really just do that?
did i hear that right?
did they do that on purpose cuz of the last time it happened here?
am i having these thoughts cuz i took WAY to much acid for their first show back?"

knowing phish as i've known them i wouldn't put it past them.
they also know things like that will promote discussions among fans like this.

that all being said, maybe it WASN'T intentional.

I think the reason the band was so off was because trey was clearly a half step off...the rest of the band was probably effing confused as to how he was going to mitigate that, and if they should stop.  I think that if you think it was "intentional", you're reaching...

I saw a show in 1995 (11/22 crap centre) where they fucked up rift and just abandoned it midstream.  Then trey blamed it on Fish!

I agree that the restart sounds worse than the original start on that YEM.

Sugarbush 95 Trey gets blamed for the Lizards abortion by Fish who gets in a teleprompter jab. something like that anyway, it's funny stuff.

I though the restart was much better but I'll have to go back and check since so many think otherwise. That is the set I've listened to the least by far.

yeah, its really not all that bad; the main blantancies are Gordo's late note at the end of the intro, Fish comes in late after the intro, and Trey is just not together.

i think maybe that they all just couldnt hear Fish's ride bell hit that starts the post-intro?

that's sort of my point....

I just find it funny that Trey has no problem pointing out fishman's mistake, or say, Mike's playing @ Raleigh 03 .... but I can't recall anytime in 2004 where any of the members publicly say anything to Trey when he was obviously screwing up more than any of them

and trey himself said that he doesn't get "in trouble" cuz he's the boss.

well at least he kinda said that when he was talking about none of the band members or crew telling him to slow down or that he had a problem cuz they needed him to keep going so they'd all still have jobs.

same thing, right?

well at least he kinda said that when he was talking about none of the band members or crew telling him to slow down or that he had a problem cuz they needed him to keep going so they'd all still have jobs.

That's not true and you know it.

Imagine if fishman gave Trey shit for every time he screwed up in PH  :|

Fish screwing up one song in one of the greatest tours in recorded history is a little different than trey fucking up every riff in all of 2004.

that's sort of my point....

I just find it funny that Trey has no problem pointing out fishman's mistake, or say, Mike's playing @ Raleigh 03 .... but I can't recall anytime in 2004 where any of the members publicly say anything to Trey when he was obviously screwing up more than any of them

In my humble opinion, they knew he was fucking it all up but either didn't have the heart to bust his balls on stage or were trying to help him privately and he just blew them off.

have to agree with you, Rich.
There's a reason why they took a break in 2000, and it's probably related.

and, in that RS article, Fish said what got him angry was that Trey broke the band up cause if he kept up touring, he would die - then he kept on touring.

we'll never know, but I would be surprised if someone didn't try to help.

Probably true.  It wouldn't make much sense to constantly give him shit on stage night after night.

I think this is it:

Phish: The Biography (Hardcover)
by Parke Puterbaugh (Author)

http://www.amazon.com/Phish-Biography-Parke-Puterbaugh/dp/0306814846

Product Description

Phish were one of the most successful touring outfits of all time, with a fan base rivaling that of the Grateful Dead. Their full story has never been told—until now.
In 1995, Parke Puterbaugh was sent by Rolling Stone to write a feature on the band. Spending time with them in their hometown and rehearsal studio, as well as attending some of their most memorable concerts, he became a trusted insider and unofficial in-house writer, producing press releases, interviews, and articles for the band until their breakup in 2004.

Phish is the product of a decade of interviews with all band members, tracing their evolution from prep school to enormous success in the mid-'90s and beyond. Puterbaugh provides unique insight into their music and complicated interpersonal dynamics; examines their controversial later years; and reveals the real role drugs played in their breakup. The result is an intimate and fascinating portrait of one of the most successful live acts in history.

The band hired Parke Peterbaugh to write the bands explanation of their choice for Haloween '96, Remain in Light by _ Talking Heads.  He also wrote the huge 6 page Rolling Stone Article to coincide with Fall Tour '96 and the release of Billy Breathes, if anyone knew the band, their story, or day to day activities, it was that guy.

If I remember correctly, he tailed them for all of Europe '96, and Fall '96.  With mad exclusive intimate time.

I'm sure the friends did make comments and talk to Trey about it.  I'm also pretty signifigantly sure that Trey, ignored the comments and deflected attention away from his problem.  I can not justify any reason to try and place some of the responsibility for Mr. A's personal decisions on those who worked for/with him.  Y'know?

The thing with drug addictions is that there isn't much you can do to push someone along that isn't ready to be pushed. I am sure the friends and band mates had more than one sit-down, informal as it may have been with ole Red. Nobody likes seeing someone you love swallowed into a shell of theirself. Hindsights 20/20 and I am sure there are things they would have done differently. Same thing for gar-gar. I'm sure the gd family has lost countless hours of sleep, thinking of what they could have done. I'm just glad to see Trey looking healthy as ever now, however he got there, and with the help of many no doubt.

echo didn't mean to echo your post fauxpa, f'n quick typers

doing an intervention isn't easy and isn't fun (I've tried one), and they don't always work.
people have to want to get better.

Absolutely. If they know they're in deep and know they can't get out without help an intervention may be their one last chance to live. Otherwise they end up in one of two places...  prison or 6 feet under.

I'm telling you guys it was absolute fate that Trey got pulled over when he did. Had he not... I guarantee we would not be typing about this stuff right now.

of course we wouldn't.

People don't stop drugs unless they want to.  No matter what.  And theres plenty of evidence to show the massive power that drugs have over people...  i mean...   look at Jerry and Trey.  It made them not care about royally fucking up in front of thousands and thousands of people who payed lots and lots of money to see the writers and professional performers of music they love.

if thats not a big "fuck you, i don't care" to the fans, then I'm not sure what is...

When Trey said "we're going to do this over and it's not going to be like the last time we did a song over" I thought about the last song at Coventry--the restart of The Curtain With.  I'm not sure if the screwup was intentional or not but that was a quick retort on Trey's part.  I'm glad they think it won't be like the last time. The 3-6-2009 show sounds pretty hot to me. It got better as it went on.

I'm not sure how true that is. I thought that Trey went into rehab for Coke in 2000 but not positive. When they stop playing together it's probably more about how the music is or how the business is than their drug habits. With the Dead for instance, I don't buy it that the guys wanted to play with other people because they couldn't get along. They toured together for 30 years! Makes much more sense that it was about the music not sounded good or them not selling enough tix.

This thread feels a little like dragging a lake 5 years after we've already gotten the conviction.

I'm guilty as well.

Trey has seemed to have moved on, let's give it a try ourselves.

Trey is clean now and I have complete faith in him that he will remain so.

It's not denial really it's just that believing that someone you love won't do what you want them to because they have a drug problem or because they don't get along with someone is easier to take than thinking that it's just because they don't want to.  I'm glad that Trey and Phish want to again and are back at it. It makes no difference to me what drugs they are or aren't on as long as they play great music. I'm sure they feel the same way.

"It's just believing something that isn't true but is easier to stomach."

That picture is damn hilarious! I am going miss that guy, at least for the laughs....

I'm not going to even get into the Trey's drug debate going on, but it's laid out right there in that RS article. Personally, I thought he looked great in Richmond in the fall, and I hoped that would be the Trey we got in Hampton. And we did. And now, I just hope that's the Trey we get all summer. That's all I am hoping for. I don't want him being drawn in as the summer wears on and the pressure starts to build, for everyones sake, but as was stated before, mostly for himself and his family.

You think I'm trying to sound like I'm drugs? Just coffee here man. I was thinking that a lot of these drug things don't make sense to me. Why would someone do that to themselves? Pop a bunch of H so they can ramble incoherently and look and play all wasted out?  The only thing I can think of is that it's a way to put some distance between themselves and all the people who would be constantly demanding things of them.  Those guys give a lot.  Members of my family have met and talked with Jerry G numerous times. He liked them because they understood that.  Remember what Trey and Gordon did at Coventry with playing out on the Rocks. It was like "is the music any better if we are closer to you the fans? Not really!"

i haven't read this book, but your post made me think of it:

QuoteWhat is the price of brilliance?

Why are so many creative geniuses also ruinously self-destructive? From Caravaggio to Jackson Pollack, from Arthur Rimbaud to Jack Kerouac, from Charlie Parker to Janis Joplin, to Kurt Cobain, and on and on, authors and artists throughout history have binged, pill-popped, injected, or poisoned themselves for their art. Fully illustrated and addictively readable, Genius and Heroin is the indispensable reference to the untidy lives of our greatest artists and thinkers, entertainingly chronicling how the notoriously creative lived and died—whether their ultimate downfalls were the result of opiates, alcohol, pot, absinthe, or the slow-motion suicide of obsession.

this thread is for debating whether or not Trey was a junkie for most of the 2000s or if it was some elaborate hoax to earn cool points with the fan base.

The addiction discussion and the YEM discussion go hand in hand because the botched YEM might also be an attempt to seem more human or lower expectations. Not sure though.

Oh, jeebus h christmas on a goddam popsicle stick. The botched opening to YEM was either an actual mistake, or it was a lame joke--to intentionally screw up the tune for an effect other than humor would have been insane. Now please f'ing shut up for a day or two, and start posting in another thread.

I chased the dragon tonight, because my friends were like starting to worship me. And then I started a sentence, but stopped, and re-started it in a different pitch of voice, just to show that I am human. I hope that tones down their fanatical tendencies towards me. I'd hate to have to take these tactics any further. Pretty much sums up my take on addiction.

Do you guys remember the reaction of people around you when they botched it? I'm actually curious here. Some people around me were laughing, but most of the people were just kind of awkwardly looking around at each other. I was kinda disappointed at first, but then I decided to be supportive and cheer. Don't know, if it was a joke, they definitely got me...

This may be somewhat anecdotal, but my Uncle, who was close with the  :syf: band and crew told me that for years the Dead would purposefully sabotage themselves...screw up on purpose when they thought their scene was getting too big. The people who couldn't take disappointment left. After Jerry's near-death experience in 1986 they said Heck With it, and went on to record a good popular album. If they did it, then I don't find it too hard to believe that  :phish: would!

yeah, being at the show, did the vocal jam not just make you in the slightest bit think how cult like all this is. Like that we could all stand there in amazement and listen to that, and in any other universe it would be like, what in the hell are you all doing? i think we can be very forgiving as fans in terms of listening to some of the insane stuff they do and be accepting of it....very cult like....

That's beautiful--the pic.  As far as Jerry goes I heard that he did hide his Burger and Fries underneath a salad in his food bag. It was a sorta wink wink kinda thing.
I guess some people might of thought that was cool--"see he's still doing what he wants even though he appears like he's being healthy!"
