Sounded like the new tune was solid, with a nice segue to piper. piper was maybe a little short, but a jam that seemed to vary some from the standard 3.0 jam > ambient piece. Segue to Lizards sounded pretty smooth via the sharts.  Sally had a nice jam, with smooth segues to and from hood and back again. Zero was probably the best & most unique of 3.0. Def didn't seem standard for 3.0, at least after Possum (which even had some fun variation to it).

When it came on, I was initially very "wtf, come on...", but after hearing what they did with it over a shitty stream, I was pretty excited. Sounded really cool, and can't wait to give the whole show an honest listen.

It sounds like Trey was starting to tease Manteca in Sally.  On the LP, it's starts around 0:22 in "Blossom Jam".  Am I crazy, or does anyone else hear this?

Steam was a cool new song. I like it.

Piper was pretty good.

Lizards was nice.

The Sally was the sickness.

Harry -> Have Mercy -> Harry is great as well. I love the Mercy and Lizards quotes in the closing segment.

I like Steam...I think the vocally delivery is a little rough.
Could just be that it's new and he's still learning the words or he just slaps together lyrics and sings them awkwardly like most of the other new stuff.
Fun song complete with gimmicky steam effect by Page is sure to please the crowd.

then Guyute has some slop, but still enjoyable. Into a nice relaxed FYF right now, with some hot metal-esque soloing by Trey.

I love hearing the crowd singing the lyrics to Fuck Your Face! Definitely was not the case at Charlotte last summer.

Steam = meh.
Seriously?  You guys like the cheese dick rock?

The rest of the show is pretty meh to me.  Slave is solid.  I like the Hood sammy.  I don't care for LF at all, so that does nothing for me.  I do think it's cool that they've already played several cuts from Waiting For Columbus.  Despite Possum going in a new "direction," it is still kind of sloppy.  This confirms to me that Detroit, like Albany and Camden, were one time deals just to appease the no-jam haters.  I'm not sold that they've turned the corner.

Seriously?  You guys like the cheese dick rock?

axilla, down with disease and julius say yes.
those are not nearly as cheese dick.

You're just saying that because you liked them when you were younger.  Were they to debut today, you'd be saying the same thing.  Especially about Julius.

Regardless of that hypothetical, I'd say I'm at least encouraged that it doesn't sound like a Trey solo song.  It actually sounds like a Phish song.

It has nothing to do with when I first heard those tunes, it has to do with the quality of the tunes.  DWD has far more structure, harmony, and style built into it than Steam.  Axilla is the same way.  I'd say Julius is huge cheese dick rock instrumentally, but it has the best lyrics of the four.  Steam has a vamp and loud sounding guitar solo with an effect by page to create the sound of steam.  That's cheese dick.

I actually like some of the new tunes, for example, I think Show of Life is awesome.  It's well written, it's catchy, and I think Trey did an excellent job with it.

IMO, Steam is probably the best new song I've heard them pull out in 3.0. I'm not counting anything that's on Joy or played a ton, I'm referring to songs like Show Of Life, Pigtail, Halfway To The Moon, etc. I guess I can just see the potential in the song, and have some hopes.
As for Detroit, Albany, and Camden. First off, no Bethel love at all? I think there was some cool moments of those shows for damn sure. Maybe night 3 was pretty meh, but 6/27, and 6/28 both do some cool stuff. While I agree with you that they may not have turned the corner, right now what I'm very much hoping is that PNC was actually the "off" here, and they are working on building. I'm definitely not sold on this, but it seems logical thus far.

That's true, and there are good cops out there. I just get pissed because the majority seem to be out to get anyone they can. I just assumed that because it happened in front of his kid, this was the case. Also, you can hear a guy say, "he was just picking up the beer" or something in the background.

Having no first hand knowledge about the guy's alleged offense, I can't comment on it.

But when the cop says, "If you don't give two shits about your kid then I don't either" I feel obligated to point out that the kid is the officer's primary responsibility as soon as the suspect is in custody. That officer immediately fails the good cop test right there and his superiors should review his actions and reprimand and retrain him.

He makes all cops look bad and, despite the good or bad influences of the child's father, that cop has just gone out of his way to leave a terrible impression of "peace officers" on that kid.

The deeper issue is what fucking business of the cops is it what you are doing unless you're endangering someone else or being reckless.

This is definitely true.  Sadly, it seems as though it is common practice for officers to partake in hyperbole such as this when dealing with suspects that they think are "hostile".

Additionally, I'd say that any time an officer uses foul language when wearing the uniform of an officer it is at the very least disrespectful to the position and the laws they serve.

Petty sad right there.   Feel horrible for the kid, hard to tell how old he is but a situation like that will not be lost easily.   No idea what the dad was up to but he must have done something other than reach for some beer on the ground.   Hopefully the video circulates merely for the verbal abuse of the officer, but as far as discrimination or misconduct that is impossible to tell really.   I would be devastated if my son was put through that...

I agree 100% with this statement, but it really has me wondering what exactly went down, really does sound like he was probably selling beers on the lot at most, because there is nothing mentioned in all that dialogue about anything to do with drugs...

Pretty harsh to do that to the kid if he was only selling beers on the lot, and if he was just drinking, then it's absolutely despicable, but either way, it should very much be the police officers responsibility to find out if that kid was going to be all alone after his father was arrested, and if the kid was going to be all alone, he should be taken into child protected services.

Have you all lost your minds?

It's pretty much completely irresponsible to do flagrantly illegal actions with a child under your supervision.

If he was selling beers while watching his child, that is COMPLETELY REPREHENSIBLE.

If he was drinking in public (and presumably drunk chaperoning his child) that too is UNACCEPTABLE.

Perhaps the cop could have worded what he was saying better, but he is kind of right.  It is pretty hard for the dad to claim at that point that he wanted to take responsibility for his child, because if he cared about his son, he wouldn't have been in that position to begin with.

Yeah, back to the music. I'm definitely not a "fluffer", at least I don't think I am. Many shows of 3.0 leave me really upset. Certainly nearly every 3.0 Possum makes me want to pull my hair (what's left of it) out. The Possum from Cuyahoga was pretty awesome in my book. It might not be as crazy as some 1.0 stuff, but IMO the slowing it down, messing with it shows a willingness to try, and it sounded WAY cool. I really dug it. I also really dig "Steam", I think that song can go places. On the re-listen I think it's crazy to assume this isn't some of the best writing hands-down from 3.0.

I WISH THEY WOULD SLOW DOWN THAT PIPER INTRO, and take it out. If that would have happened, this shit would be straight up fire. Instead, it totally lags for the Piper, and then starts to come back.

I agree with just about everything you said here.  There are other 3.0 songs that I may rank up there with Steam, especially if they never jam on it more though.

For the most part, you are correct.

Wow.  That Piper is awesome.  It's so much better than most 3.0 pipers.  Kudos for them not making this one a rocker.  The length is very deceiving.

It's tough to figure out if you're being sarcastic or not. I for one (as I've said a lot) miss the days of the slow, building Piper intros. This actually does not suck towards the end, but had it been slower I would have loved it.

I'm not being sarcastic.  Piper hasn't had a good building up in years.  I agree the opening i not as good as it could be, but this piper is unique and awesome.  The space they find in the jam was enjoyable for me to listen to.  I'm sure I would have enjoyed it at the show.

Just got back home from Blossom.  This was a rare one and done for me...no Detroit, no Cincy.  It was a decent amount of effort and money for 1 show, and I have to admit that it was 100% worth it.  The first set was good.  Very 3.0-ish.  FYF, Rocket, and Guyute were fun based purely on song selection that I wanted to hear.  Antelope is always welcomed.

This second set was hot.  I really enjoyed it.  The end of Possum set the tone for dark/odd/unpredictable jams.  It wasn't super tight, but we were digging the unpredictablilty, and that's what made the set one of the best I've seen in awhile.  I thought Hood was going to end it, again the curve ball into Have Mercy was sweet.  I had chills when they dropped back into Hood.

It could be because I was there, but Blossom set 2 gets my vote for the best set of summer so far...by a long shot.  It appears the band is (very) slowly gaining steam (no pun intended.)  Last night was a big step in the right direction, which makes me super excited for my little SE run coming up.

First set was mostly meh for this listener until the Antelope, smoking version w/ some nice modulations.  Steam is a nice surprise w/ great jam potential, my brief review:
Quote
Steam - slight Medeski vibe esp. Page, subway steam, loop/siren nostalgia, lets hope they take this one out.  Ghost of 3.0?  nice Page effect underneath Trey, back into Scofield/MMW esque groove, subterranean Phish/trippy jam into >

Piper - more of Page's trippy effect before he jumps onto the ivories, jam lifts off early,
nice jam into ambient waters, beautiful improv, very colorful, Trey teasing something? can't place it, he sounds so much better this tour, virtually no whale w/ a creative, dynamic feel, short but beautiful jam into

Lizards - break.

Sally - nice funk groove coming out of the vocal scat, Mike sounds like he's popping balloons w/ his bass tone/effect, jam goes into a heavier vamp, heavy metal love supreme, Tower esque free jam, Page sounding trippy w/ his Leslie, switching back to his now classic 3.0 "the Aliens are coming!" keyboard style, Trey w/ a muddy, industrial loop underneath, into

Hood/rest of set was executed well but didn't feature any music that caught my attention.  overall props goes to Antelope, Steam > Piper and Sally.

Let me add my voice of approval for this Piper. Yes, a nice long intro would have been welcome. Some rage following the lyrics before it wound down, sure, would not have been a bad thing.

But not five minutes into the song they had already developed a rather unique and melodic jam (nice work from Page especially), and the nice slide into Lizards doesn't sound abrupt or like an abortion at all. The jam isn't a 20-minute excursion, but it's interesting nonetheless and after a short while they simply decided to play a new song. One can't really complain, unless it's strictly about the duration. Also, Trey and Mike managed to weave some playful Reba teases in there during minute six (I believe it was, on the LP SBD).

Re-listened to set II tonight. I dig the odd Possum; Steam is a good new song, Trey seems a little unsure of the vocals at times and I bet they'll get better as it get's more play; Piper is a little bit better than most other 3.0 pipers; Lizards is a 3.0 lizards; Sally is very fun and enjoyable Hood is sweet and the Have Mercy sandwich is great; even Zero is decent.

I like Steam - it has the potential to go places.

At this point, it's the only 3.0 song that belongs anywhere after midway through the 1st set (including Light - way overplayed, imo).

need to listen more to the rest of the set, but some good stuff. Hopefully they will expand on this.

I haven't really been too much of a fan of Possum these days.  It's not that I don't like the song though.  It's because i've seen it played 19 times.  That being said I really enjoyed the Possum at this show.  I also really liked the way Trey played Hood.  It seemed different to me, and better than the way it's usually played.  Also, ... was I just hearing things or did they tease the shit out of Manteca during Sally?

While the lyrics qualify, musically, the song does not qualify.  A dirge is mournful, slow and epic sounding, like a chant.  This song doesn't qualify imo.

I don't know what's humorous about it. But I don't think it's a dirge either. Count me in on the "like" side for this one. I dig it, esp mike's bassline. I think someone mentioned it earlier that it could develop into their 3.0 ghost...if fish didn't play it so straight, and added some syncopation into his high hat, it could get funky as hell...in any case, I'm really looking forward to seeing this one develop.

also liked Lizards, and Sally > Hood > Have Mercy >Hood

Wow, well I'll be damned.  We have a band called Phish back.

I'm listening to set 2 right now, and so far I've only gotten through the end of Possum, about to trail into the new song....  but my word, we have some developments.

Birds of a Feather - pretty lame that they cut this so short, but the main thing that is important about this song is Trey's note choice and melodic sensibility.  He was pulling stuff out and melodicising in a way I haven't heard since the last time I listened to a pH show.  He had licks in there, modulationalary thought executions, and melodic interplay that warrants a legitimate acknowledgement.  Page, especially, was going great on his piano, but I mean, do we even need to acknowledge that?

Possum - Okay, kinda bummed at the song choice, but it keeps the energy going, and boy oh boy did this demonstrate some fucking incredible band fun-having.  The jam in this was absolutely wonderful in its unexpected what-the-fuck-ness.  First off, Page and Trey were hooking up on some truly enjoyable melodic and rythmic themes, totally cool and different for a Possum jam.  I have to go back and relisten, because this first half of the jam was great, but became overshadowed in my view by the structured madness of the 2nd half, when Trey (TREY!) instigated a dissolution of the jam structure's normal boundary limits, and took the band and myself on a crazed thumb-on-a-tape-reel wind-down thing that was just a pleasure to hear.  And then it even informed the rest of the song, with Mike carrying on the pitch-bending shit with his voice!  Totally awesome, really inspiring to hear them do that.

Steam - WOW!!!!!!!!!  This rules!!!!  It sounds so familiar, I don't know why, but it fucking rules.  I love this.  The whammy loops, Page's steam effect, the laid back jam groove, Page playing single note organ licks.  This song's ending has the potential to be the perfect pairing for Bowie.  The Piper segue was great, and could work well too, if Trey would just CHILL the fuck on the intro a little bit.

Piper - PAGE!!!!!!! during the intro!!!!  Page is all over this with a couple cool things, first a warbly noise and then some neat piano licks as Fish brings the song's ascent to a start.  I miss the vocal fade in, but thankfully Trey's intro wasn't bone-jarringly mis-placed.  Kinda strange how Page has turned the middle jam break into the intro again, with his intro piano lick.  Its also a little annoying that the vocal refrain repeats have become absolutely predictable and regular, same with Trey's jam-start.  Although, actually this one had a surprisingly different and interesting beginning to the jam, courtesy of a Trey lick.  I'm actually enjoying Trey's playing in this one.  Fish seems to be having somewhat of a difficult time with it; I'm not sure why, thats just the feeling I'm getting from his playing.  I like Trey's aborting of the R@WKKK part early on, that bodes well, and the start of this segment is actually fucking AWESOME, thanks to Page.  HOly shit this is great!!!!  Please dont fuck it up Trey, please don't.  I beg you.  And he actually isn't.......  This is actually really fucking good!  If Trey would knock off with the bridge pickup and go to his neck pickup, this would be PURE butter.  Around 5:40, the jam has serious potential to go into a really cool place, but its not to be; Trey inserts tension notes, which....ehhh, i guess it could work if they were going to go into Frankie Says, but....mmm, I'm not sure.  They all hook up pretty well past the 6 minute mark though, and get back to a sort of group structure similar to what happened in Possum.  At 7 minutes the jam hits a modulation into a truly great space, but of course its about to jump into Lizards.  Thankfully Trey lets it slide for a fewww seconds before gluttoning into his horce.  And the segue is actually pretty smooth, too....hmmm.

Lizards - This is cool, first Lizards in a long time, I think?  Page is ruling this intro.  This one is surprisingly together.  Trey is choosing not to play in a bunch of places, which is working in the grand scheme of things, but I'd rather him do that than fumble through the crowd of chords with a giant boner and poke everyone of them in the ass because he can't keep it together.  They seem to have adjusted the arrangement a little bit, with the backing vocal stuff, and Fish is playing into the ebb and flow of the song more, with his drum beat, letting it come and go a bit.  This is actually pretty together; I gotta give it to them.  I'm not to the coda jam yet, but....  the Page jam is pretty good, Trey sounds weird under Page at the end of it....  its a strange sound, he's struggling with the Bowie-ending-esque lines a bit, and he seems like he's laughing when they come in for the final ohh-woah's.  And now here we are....... NO BUM NOTES YET.  Onto the 2nd repeat of the phrase, and still no bum notes yet.......   wow.  HE PRACTICED.  HOLY SHIT!!!!  He's taking his time, and he's getting it RIGHT.  Wow.  This is remarkable.  This version seems really well-done; its kind of like they were relaxed with it, and just had fun and went with it.  Nothing outrageous or transcendental, but a well-played version of a tougher song.  That was good, I liked it.  A little cringe was always there throughout, wondering if Trey was going to get it, and I think the other guys were sensing it too, but it never fell apart whatsoever.

Sally - Okay, so Trey saves the flub for the Sally intro?  LOL.  Okay.  Sure, I guess.... I mean its kind of funny, almost as if they did like a flawless Dinner a Movie>Bowie->Foam>Fluffhead->Bowie bit and then Trey absolutely trainwrecks on the intro to Jibboo.  The song is okay, kinda cool how it goes to the vocal jam early; seemed planned though because they all jumped on it.  Fish seems to be enjoying himself on this one, once the jam starts around 5:20.  I like Page's playing on the clav, because he's chilling and doing some shorter theme-based patterns, which he usually doesn't do.  This is getting deep!  I wish Page kept what he was doing instead of moving up into a higher register.  I like what Trey is doing too, short staccato-y notes way up the neck.  Something is seriously popping and reverberating against the arena though, it sounds weird.

Blossom Jam - thankfully they pulled Trey out of his weird backwards delay abortion thing he started doing.  Manteca teases are neat, the jam is kinda aimless though at 1:10.  Trey seems too stuck in his stupid effect thingy he's doing, and the others can't figure out what to do.  The weird reverb thingy is back.  Oh god damnit Trey, can you fucking NOT do that for ONE show???  His shit at 2:00.... that stupid out-of-sync pong bullshit.  It gets really annoying, thats his new cop-out I guess.  Okay maybe he's coming back.....  interesting.  Hmmm, not sure how I feel about this; its kinda strange.  Could be cool.... we'll see I guess?  Yeah nah....  pretty weak.  I don't get why he does this, when he'd been pulling great melodic stuff out of his guitar up to that point.  Page's effects at 4:10 are kinda neat, but.... this is just kinda lame.  Sounds like Trey really wants to play 2001 now.  Page with some weird sizzly thing and then a neener-neener nitrous thing.  This wouldve been a great place to drop Whats The Use? or cruise into a My Left Toe.

Hood - weird start, Trey plays some stuff over the changes thats a bit interesting.  Mike diddlying about with some neat bass boingee-doings.  Woahh wtf is this!!  Gnarly Mike envelope madness.  Okay hmmm Trey sounds kinda cool now.  Wow this is a strangely unsettling Hood intro!  Oh DAMNIT Trey!!!!!!!!!!  Fucking horce the Harry shit.  Fucking dipshit.  You were getting to set up an epic Hood intro part.  Mike must be playing in a different position, because his notes are really sticking out throughout post "Go" throughout the rest of the song.  Wow Trey didn't fuck the Mr. Minor riff!  Jam start is great....  cool melody interplay, and great work from Fish.  Trey is playing interesting things, and Mike is fucking cool.  They're leaving spaces for each other, and filling them wisely.  The part at 7:17 is really fucking cool, thanks to Mike's bass chords!!!!!!  It was a neat ride on into....

Have Mercy - THANK GOD TREY DIDN'T LEAD THAT!!!  I don't know if it was planned cuz you can hear Trey lead into the chords, trying to find a way into it, and then him and Mike seem to kind of hook up as Fish smears the beat.  It wasn't super smooth, but it wasn't jarring or akward.  Imo, they should have smeared the beat a little more longer before jumping in, but Mike and Trey hooked up on it pretty well.  Cool Pay Jorgan!!!  Fish adding nice hi-hat flourishes, almost doing some Frankie Says-type patterns.  Hmmm....

Hood Reprise - wasn't super smooth, lead by Trey, but he didn't horce it totally.  It sure could have been more fluid and patient, but it wasn't horrible.  Some cool playing though by Page and Trey here.  WOAH!!!!  TREY LINES!!!!!!!  :57!!!!!!  TREY!!!!  YOU DON'T SUCK!!!   Omg these lines are awesome, up until like 1:10, fucking melodic up the ass!!!  Wow, I can't remember the last time Trey made me do that with my keyboard.  Lizards tease????  1:38 and onward is definitely Lizards teases.   Okay yeah, Lizards tease.  Climb up to the closing seems to be a little....mmmm, I'm not sure.  Trey comes in with Bowie-ending licks though, this is pretty cool!!!  Wow!!!  OH fuck you Trey.  God damnit.  WHY DO YOU DO THAT?!?!?!??!?!!
DURRRRRHURRRR DURRRPPPP GOOD ABOUT HOOOOD  DURRRP DURRRRP GOOD AH-BOWT H000D DURRRRRRRRRR.  Wow, fail.  Okay, it wasn't totally horrible, but damn that wasn't the right time to do that.  At all.  Not even close.

Character Zero - kicked.in.balls.  Fish getting Julius-esque on us, thats kinda cool.  Man I haven't actually listened to this song in forever.  Jam actually features some pretty fast playing by Trey in some licks, as well as some thought-out playing.  A random WOO from Fish?  Whoah.....  4:28 TREY!  Holy crap, he CAN play a guitar!!!!  He actually pushes it to a nice guitar peak, too.  Damn.  That wasn't a complete waste of time.  Woah, more blues shredding from Trey!!!  Holy crap!!  This is actually good!!!!!!  Around 6:00 or so, and then a nice Possum down-tune return.  Haha, thats kinda cool.  haha, that was good.  Wow, a Character Zero thats actually interesting.  I didn't know those existed?  Great Trey licks during the outro refrain, too!  God damn.

Well.... this set was fun!  God damn.  Some good shit all around, very interesting, very playful, great stuff by all.  Definitely a good set.  Very good set, very cohesive playing, and they broke the mold in places.  Thats good.  Some people may not like this, because the utmost 95-ish perfection isn't there in terms of the execution, but this is absolutely the opposite of bland 3.0 playing.  It warrants the Slave encore, for sure.

I'd say this is a solid B+/A- set.  If the Sally wasn't the random drawn-out Trey abortion noodle jam, then this set would be epic, as well as if the Hood>Mercy>Hood transitions were a bit smoother.  But hey.... its good.

I mean, did you actually really listen to it?  There was some actually worthwhile stuff in there.  The Birds solo was good, the Possum was awesome, and the Piper jam had a lot of great moments.  Sally was meh, but even Character Zero was great, and this Slave jam is fucking good, too.

Its definitely above average man.  I mean, like honestly tho, where do you find flaw with it?  I haven't listened to the first set, btw.

In regards to Possum, just because they went off script doesn't mean it was good.

Yes, I actually listened to it.  There's nothing that I want to listen to again, except for maybe the Piper.

Above average compared to what?  3.0?  The average Strange Design show is above average compared to 3.0.

Faux is on point here, and Hicks as well.  This shit was weak sauce.  Detroit has been the only show I want to relisten to and the only show worthy of discussing.  Everything else has been crap this summer.

But the Possum was good...     I mean, are you like seriously angry that the band is even still playing?  I wish I could help you enjoy the music simply because we're getting more new Phish, which is a good thing in and of itself.

I mean, yeah I can point out things that would ruin the stuff but....  theres enough negativity and bullshit in life to where whining about Phish seems to be just sort of worthless.  I mean, my parents got divorced a few months ago, my best friend killed himself a couple months before that, my grandfather died 2 weeks before that happened, and now my dad is already getting married after knowing this woman for like, 5 months.  I'm sure she likes the hundreds of thousands of dollars he pulls in every year, and the tens of thousands of dollars that I'm sure he's blown already on vacations and cruises and plane tickets for the two of them, considering we live in New York and she's in fucking Minnesota and he's moving her out here next month, into my house, and getting rid of our cats because he doesn't want to have to be bothered taking care of them when she gets here, and he didn't even ask me or tell me that he was going to be proposing to her, and just springs it on me like "Oh yeah, you're going to have a new mother.  And new family members.  You'll have a sister now.  They'll be coming into our house."

So I'm sure as hell going to fucking pick out the good parts of mediocre Phish and focus on that.  I don't know why I'm internet-yelling at you, because I'm not, but I wish you could enjoy Phish dude.  I know, it sucks we get bullshit Ghosts with no whammy loops and no jams anymore, but....  there still is worthwhile things to be had.

Yeah I tentatively agree with Hicks on this one. I listened to the Possum for the first time this AM. Big time weird and I'm still not entirely sold either way. I think I need a few more listens to reach my final verdict. Part of me digs the weirdness and part of me finds it disjointed and, well, weird.

it's funny.........so many peepz go back and forth on this band.........after a pretty decent show, don't we all want to believe that they're closer to what they were before?    and when they deliver the 7 minute ghosts and pretty much deliver nearly everything with some kind of meh script, it's the worst.

I'm with everybody..........i agree on nearly every one of the hater's points b/c they are, for the most part, dead-on, and i agree with fluffers b/c the truth is that they're still way too good to be THAT bad.........

I don't get Trey and what his deal is anymore.    I really thought the 3rd tour after the long layoff would be where we began to see him regain confidence and sophist, you even mentioned that you thought he had been practicing........he does sound better in many ways...........but compared to his playing in even something tame like the solo in the 6/30/00 halley's jam (one of my favs for the record), he's still playing like a nervous child most of the time.

i guess i hate how nearly of 2.0 and 3.0 shows have this vibe of - so are we getting a great show or a meh show?     i mean, these weren't generally heavy topics back in september of 2000.......and yet even then, we generally felt a break was needed by the band......at least the phans i hung out with back then thought so.    And nearly ANY 2000 show compared to nearly any post-2000 show isn't really much of a comparison in general.

3.0 has great stuff as did 2003 and 2004.    But take all the great moments of out 03, 04, 09, 10 and 11, and you have maybe a two week run in 2000.

That's right, i have no point..........I'm confused and that's why I never post much anymore.

My report is that it's not good and it's not bad.  It's different and was probably fun to see at the show.  I don't really care about listening to it again tho.  This version should be akin to icing on a cake.  Without the cake, it's just frosting.

I personally think one of the reason's Trey's playing is not to 1.0 or 2.0 levels is because 3.0 Trey is now a recovering drug addict.

My younger sister is a recovering addict, so for me I equate a lot of Trey to her when it comes to getting clean and being clean. She's been clean for 4 years now, but I can still see how even 1 year of hard drug use has changed even the most fundamental things in her. Simple thought processes, simple reasoning of every day things you and I take for granted are now a struggle for her. I'm not trying to make excuses for Trey, but maybe Trey has done enough drugs to change the wiring in his brain when it comes to playing. The way I see it, Trey is relearning how to play, how to sing, how to perform without the drugs and with the damaged mind and body left behind by prolonged drug use. If that is the case then the vast improvement in him since 2009 to now should give us all hope, haters and fluffer alike, that although it will be a LONG road to recovery, Trey is on that road and we need to hang on, enjoy the ride and encourage him that he can play as well, if not, even better without the drugs and that he doesn't need to be so f'ed up to play a "trippy" 2001 or a 35 minute YEM.

We also have to realize that Trey is not the same person and he may never play the same way again.

I treat Trey and Phish, the way I treat my younger sister, she might be a 30 year old who can no longer do the simple things she could do as a child, but she and Trey are alive and healthy and I wouldn't trade that for the world.

-If I never heard Phish in the 90's, I would think this is pretty damn good. I maintain my  :phish: sanity by just accepting that it won't be what it was, I have the choice of taking it or leaving it.

-Who really knows why Trey, and the band, isn't playing epic jams. Drugs? Age? Also remember, in the 90s, they were probably the most rehearsed rock band in the history of the planet, with the possible exception of Zappa. You know what they say about practice.

-I wish I had a nickel for everyone here who says that Phish totally sucks, then goes to a show and can't stop posting about the outrageous time they had (props to Aug, among others, for being consistent and honest)

-GW curse or no, I wish I was there tonight

I personally think one of the reason's Trey's playing is not to 1.0 or 2.0 levels is because 3.0 Trey is now a recovering drug addict.

I treat Trey and Phish, the way I treat my younger sister, she might be a 30 year old who can no longer do the simple things she could do as a child, but she and Trey are alive and healthy and I wouldn't trade that for the world.

Absolutely 100% on-the-money.  It can be stated no other way.  I'm 25, a recovering opiate addict, and I tell you...... making sure I have gas in my car, getting up early enough to show and shave, having food in the fridge, money in my wallet, and getting to work on time take up ALL of my fucking energy.  I fucking hate it.  It sucks so badly.  I don't get why, and no matter what I do, it never gets any easier.  Its a struggle just to keep myself in presentable condition, let alone manage the courseload of a Bachelors degree, a full-time internship, getting a full-time job, getting to doctors appointments, doing homework, cleaning the litter box, going shopping.........  its fucking, I don't understand how some people do so much shit.

Its fucking a challenge for me to get ANYWHERE on time.  Whenever I'm about to leave for somewhere, I always start getting this fucking panicky feeling like I forgot something, and I have to go back and look through the house to make sure I didn't fucking leave the heat on, or left the catfood box open, or left the bathroom light on.  Its SO fucking annoying.

And it always fucks me up, because I want to be normal, but I can't do it.  I always screw it up.  I just failed college, basically; I'm not graduating.  I'm 5 classes short, but after my grandfather died, my best friend since kindergarten shot himself, then my parents splitting up, then Kyle's dad dying, then having to call the police on my mom, and then having to put my grandmother in a nursing home (which resulted in my mother's side of the family imploding), then having my dad start going out with some woman on the other side of the country, then him spending $27,494.39 in 6 months (i saw his Discover card statement..........) on their vacations and trips and now he's marrying her and moving her out here into our house, the house that my MOM's father built, and have that ALL happening between in less than 6 months is well, ha.  Yeah, my life is in shambles.  I think about killing myself all the time, just because of the result in would achieve in not having to deal with shit anymore.  And losing U-Melt last fall...........  that hurts, a lot.

And yet, we have Phish.  Phish makes me feel good, without drugs.  I pump the 6/23/04 Noblesville jam in my car, and I feel like I just shot up an ounce of meth.  I'm ready, I get the jam-tingle and I fucking FEEL IT.  I have a feeling tomorrow night will be my last show, and I'm hoping the Darien magic rears its head once more, one last time, to continue my great-streak of seeing 3.0 Phish (bustouts galore, kick-downs, epic jams, NO TTE's).

So, I'm not sure what I'm talking about anymore, I'm gonna go try to cool off this apartment while annoying the neighbors with my excessively loud, ghetto-style (open windows with speakers in them) blasting of the 7/4/00 Set II.

it's funny.........so many peepz go back and forth on this band.........after a pretty decent show, don't we all want to believe that they're closer to what they were before?    and when they deliver the 7 minute ghosts and pretty much deliver nearly everything with some kind of meh script, it's the worst.

That's right, i have no point..........I'm confused and that's why I never post much anymore.

peace

Agreed on the health front.

The thing is that he can play difficult composed sections (a lot of the time) as well as at any point in the band's history.     There are the occasional flubs, but in general, he nails YEM almost everytime;  same with Bowie and same with Reba, among others..........he does certain things as good as he always has that require focus and chops.    I grant you that playing compositions is not the same as leading jams, but one could also argue that sitting back and adding texture while the rest of the band drives the train, ala '97, wouldn't be all that crazy a methodology for a guy still learning how to lead jams again...instead, he ends them early, a lot of the time.

Just sayin' - if he can manage the harder of the two...the thing he couldn't manage in 2003 or 2004, you'd think the lay back and jam side would be loving all of this.

Heavy shit, for sure, but there is good news.  You can "be normal."  The drugs damaged your brain, but the great news is the brain loves to repair itself.  It'll take time, but things will come easier.  There are things that will speed up this healing process too.  I'd recommend researching it...obviously stay away from drugs, and limit booze, cigs, caffeine.  Also there are a ton of things that are great for the brain...water, blueberries, picking up a fine motor skill hobby (like learning guitar.)  It sounds like you've been through a lot, so keep rocking out the Phish and keep moving forward!

First of all Gumbo, I don't know you at all, but you're definitely amongst friends here. Please don't hesitate to shout, even if you just need someone to listen. Stay strong, brotha man.

Secondly, I'm on my 3rd listen here (and I'm probably going to catch some hate for this, but this Antelope is good stuff). Minus the Streets of Cairo tease (which is a little old), I honestly can't see how you don't some goodness here... It's not 1.0, but it's certainly one of my favorite 'Lopes from 3.0.

Ditto on both counts. Gumbo, I don't know you either, but as someone who just recently went through a very rough couple of years myself, I just wanted to say keep your head up, things will get better eventually, as trite as that sounds. Even if your problems seem like the sort of thing you can't do anything to solve, eventually life's inertia will often change things for the better if you just keep your head up and try to maintain perspective, as hard as that may be sometimes. Hopefully that didn't sound too motivational-speaker-ish, but it's been true in my experience.

As for the 'lope, I was just listening to this yesterday and thinking the same thing. I haven't been a fan of 3.0 antelopes, but this one gets it done IMO. Anyone else catch the While My Guitar Gently Weeps tease at around 6 minutes or so?

I think this new song is pretty awesome, definitely among the better new tunes of 3.0... It's lyrical sound IMO, it actually has some depth to it...

Quote
STEAM:
there is the tower
like a solitary flower
standing in the snow
as the wolves all wait below
and you're walking on the ledge
throwing breadcrusts off the edge
as you sing in voice so clear
and my name I think I hear
concealed within the theme
then it disappears as steam

and I'm standing far below
watching wolves you seem to know
as your voice still carries on
in your never-ending song
and my blood begins to boil
and my bones melt into oil
hissing liquid in the snow
as my body sinks below
and a ripple sends a beam
of sunlight dancing through the steam

my now unfettered soul
has direction I control
to your tower I draw near
but do I see a trace of fear?
the approaching sound of hooves
now scatters all the wolves
you briefly watch the horseman ride
then you quickly run inside
the rider's weapons gleam
while the horse's nostrils steam

there's no time to reflect, who
is this man? I must protect you
in the rider's hand I see
he holds your prison's only key
he glances up and glares
and then he starts to climb the stairs
I can tell you're terrified
so I quickly go inside
but then I hear a fateful scream
and your soul joins mine as steam

we escaped the dreadful night
and as lovers soared in flight
blissful weeks turned into seasons
but one day without a reason
or goodbye you flew below
back to the animals you know
now you forever sing your song
with the wolves where you belong
now quite alone I often dream
I hear you singing through the steam

Yeah, I was just coming in here to post, I just started set 2 and this started, and I was like, damn, what's this? Oh yeah the new tune....definitely digging it, and getting better with each listen. Like I said earlier, I'm excited to see this one develop. Such a chill laid back vibe to it....

Definitely, I was going crazy cause I didnt know what it was when I was there. But I wanna see where it goes. But it was weird, people were singing along with it in the crowd... ??? Has TAB or another solo project played this before or something?

But out of the 3 midwest shows (Det>cleveland>cinci) This might be the weakest show musically, but it was defininitely one of the best because of the energy and the experience. But my highlights were FYF, Lope, Steam, Lizards, Hood>have Mercy>Hood and Char 0 and Slave as always.

And Gumbo, I know I'm young and shit, but keep your head up, life seems like it has ways of suprising you and it cycles through the high and low points. Also I'm glad I hooked you up with that ticket! I didn't realize that might have been your last. I hope you had alot of fun the other day :beers:

In some aspects yes. I'm gonna give them both a relisten soon, cause I'm going off being there and the few songs I snagged for when we were on the road to the next show... I could be totally off though. I just liked cinci alot because of all the songs I hadn't gotten hear such as tweezer+prise, c&p, boogie on, yem, free, reba, mound (one of my absolute favorite composed songs), lawn boy and AC/DC Bag.

But there is a good chance I might be totally wrong cause I do remember there weren't as many highlights for cinci jams wise

I think Cinci is a much better show than this one.

Interesting. I'll re listen. Just thinking back to Blossom, I loved the 'lope and possum, which I still have a desire to replay. Nothing from Cinci really stuck out as something I'd be replaying much.

I deleted this show without ever listening to it again.

I think I listened to Cincy twice and still haven't deleted it yet.  That is my basis for comparison.

K so I re listened. I think the reason I liked cinci more was definitely the setlist. The playing is better for Blossom imo. JAMMMZZZZ

my mom starts watching over my shoulder and asks if i'm watching videos from the future... i looked at her puzzled.

she said that my wedding more than likely would go off like that... i'm alright that she thinks that, and that she still has delusions of grandeur about me getting married....

Plinko Sally =
I was just grooving that as I drove around :-D

Also I really dig the birds, some nice tension building near the end. Also I really dig this 15 second section from like 5:50 on. Its this little optimistic sounding riff

2011-06-06 Blossom

2011 was during my hiatus  that stretched from Summer '10 -> Hampton '13. I listened to shows but only selectively and mostly highlights at that.

KDF - strong rock opener. Not special but not bad

Guyute - 1st of 6 in '11. Only 5x since '11. The rust is a bit thick as it gets going. But they pull it together and mostly it comes of well as a strong statement for early in a first set.

FYF - short weird and sweet. But then it drops right >

Foam - not bad. Great paired with FYF

Ocelot - slow down after the relatively frenetic Foam but it picks up and Trey gets good and rockin' before it's done.

Rocket In My Pocket - probably caught a few off guard. Only the second version of this. It's cool but I can feel why it didn't come back.

GBOTT - strong bouncy version rolls almost straight into

Guelah - cool dubby echo breaks from trey in the intro (0:28) then some loops that I'd call a-typical. The schoeps tubes source reveals a stunning degree of echo during The Asse Festival segment (Go Page!) which is followed by a nice long pause before reprising Guelah proper. Solid.

Tube - standard length (sorry fans of epic Tubes. Those are NOT standard).  Trey shout-out, "Page's House" intros the funky clav solo. Page proceeds to tear it up and his sologoes just long enough to make optimists wonder if maybe this would be the one where they stretch it out again but... Nope. Weird delay loop(?) business after Tube and before

Antelope - ripping intro jam. I lost count of gears but Trey shifts up a few before the Marco Equandolas fun. Clearly they are pumped and having a good time. Light solo?

Good set one. Clearly they were feeling ready to get busy with the early Guyute and, after some early missteps in that song, things really got going. When they roll into Guelah, Trey is obviously feeling confident and Page is completely on fire. Trey's shit eating grin is audible on the audience tapes in Antelope. That certainly leaves me looking forward to set two as it no doubt did for the folks at Blossom that night.

We booked it to Cinci right after the show. Great times.

Second set of the show is in next week's podcast. I'll add my notes for that next week.

Set Two

Birds - not long but Trey definitely goes in some interesting directions with a few of his runs in there. Sadly, they tie it up after only seven mins.

Possum - weird placement. Structured like a standard version but Trey starts bending his notes downward and then the band starts following him into tempo breakdowns that could seriously mess with an impaired mind. Very melty. That it continues into the lyrical reprise section is doubly trippy. Love this very unique version. I suspect the oddness is directly connected to what was to follow:

Steam - speaking of melting... Or is that transpiration? Whatever. First Time Played. Fully conceived except for jam potential at its debut, complete with that weird hissing sound effect. I think I was not a big fan of his when I first heard it but I've long since come around. Such solid Trey soloing... I don't know what was wrong with me not liking this. Then is dissolves into

Piper - extended intros are soooo 1.0. But trippy outros sure are nice.  This one covers the core ground and then Trey goes into some head-down noodly space bouncing off of Mike and Page as Fish keeps the ship upright. Only a few minutes of this, though, before woah >

Lizards - page is, of course, flawless here. Trey steps up for his solo and lays an excellent reading as well

Sally - if Lizards was for the spinners, this was for the cow funk dancers. Nice little vocal jam break then back into the groove. Manteca/Cissy Strut/NOLA rhythms for a bit then it takes another turn as Mike gets to pounding out a heavy groove. This is Type II territory. Trey dirties up his tone to go along with. Almost Metal-Phish for a moment there. Some of this is echoed in the Storage Jam, iirc. Then it slide into formless waves of noise loops without rhythm for nearly a minute before Fishman signals the intro to

Hood - lovely. Flows well. Gets into the quieter part of the jam before flowing nicely >

Have Mercy - 13th performance. Last Have Mercy/Hood pairing was the Sculpture Room at Goddard on Halloween '86. Let that shit sink in a moment. This a very charming couple of minutes  it comes off as very sincere. No fooling around here. And then, as quickly as it appeared it's gone and back >

Hood - but while the band plays Hood, Trey plays the Have Mercy melody line for a bit. Then he does a bit of Lizards before going at the Hood closing build. Good build and peak but instead of blowing the roof off with the peak and closing with a final "You Can Feel Good!" they drop into

Zero - guess the curfew wasn't quite nigh. Still time for some rawk. Smoke On The Water tease and then more melty, tempo drag like in Possum.

E:
Slave - standard-awesome version. Not the best peak/finish you'll hear but not bad at all. Apt closer for a fun show.

This show kind of has it all. Rawk jams, interesting type II (though limited) action, funny business (FYF, Possum), cow funk, blissful peak jamming, and a solid bustdown (kickdown/bustout). The band is having a great time and playing well and it's hard as a listener not to pick up on and enjoy that.
